I remember Dedo saying something along the lines of he was stopping submitting patients because it just provides a better blueprint to copy.

I have the The new Godox tubes. I was very impressed when I tested the 2 foot against a 4 foot Titan tube. It's pretty close. Probably the closest there is to matching Titan's performance. The Godox was brighter and more saturated, while the Titans were smother in their transitions. (And that is a 2 foot against a 4 foot!) But not by much. It's amazing how the high tech is trickling down to affordability. Hope to have the video of the comparison up soon. Great conversation as always!

I'd love to see some better durability built into some of the mid range lights. Hell, you could take a hammer to those old 2k zips. Also, I believe that planned obsolescence is a bit of an issue in these new brands popping up. I have a strong suspicion that the Bowens mount will be completely replaced in a few years forcing us to buy new soft boxes, lenses or adapter work arounds etc.

Surely Dedo is the answer for 40w 80w 90w - bi colour or full colour with endless things you can put in front of them. Their optics are just so good. Plus the brand is very strong. Picking up relfector side - Dedo have innovated, they have a much better arm for the mounting, the produce a No 5 which is a slash, their Eflect is awesome. They produce parallel beam adaptors which is really important and going forward they have some new flexible versions where there s more shape control. Their table top kit is very good. Yes put my hand up - am a Dedo fan - for very good reasons

I love the old classic tungsten dedo, was much less impressed with the Neo/prolycht... output not really that great especially with projection optics (dismal really). The parallel beam are great but way too expensive, the one i bought for my dedo 400 HMI (1419) was over $2000K... i'm liking them less and less as they lack control of say ellipsoidal and often i'd just be better choosing a higher wattage light to begin with... i really think the future of CRLS and reflected light may very well be in the newer tech of LED lasers, like sumo has been experimenting with... all of the optics for their full color and prolycht 300/675 are not new designs but re-purposed from point light source designs, more aligned with point source bulbs and not COB emitters, hence the really terrible output - sharp but crap output. I do like the e-flect and own several sets.

@@GaffersSalon I did see a laser style light that was very good from a power point of view but colour was terrible. I take your point on the Neos, I have a couple of the colours ones and they are not designed for the PBs but they are pretty good with the normal imagers. The DLED 7 and 4 semi traditional bi colour LEDs they are very good and work well with their PBs. The PB400 yes its a big piece of glass does work of course with a DLED10 but it does give 5x power to a 575W HMI - I am not keen on a race to the bottom in terms of price. Expensive very good kit is our stock in trade because only gaffers and rental houses will buy it - look what happened with Aputure - that did not happen with Nanlux, Nanlite - Godox are moving into do the same thing. We need strong brands, well made, that keep going that we have confidence in and good back up. Dedo do that, if you need them to, they'll make a specific part just for you.

I agree regarding the CRLS.. I couldn't believe they would blatantly rip Lightbridge off! I think it damages the Godox brand and makes me less likely to spend money with them.

I agree as well about the CRLS. I wont be buying the Godox ones. But I don't think it damages the Godox brand. 90% of the brand was built of the backs of copying others work. A lot of lighting companies do that. Godox did it well and built a brand of budget but good. The people that are going to be buying these godox reflectors would have never bought from lightbridge or dedo because their prices are seen as a bit high for what the reflectors are. So if anything as much as i hate this, it will only make the majority of the godox fans happier.
Also it could potentially make reflectors more main stream. Which COULD be a good thing. We'll see.

Great discussion! Just worth pointing out that Dedolight lightstream have certainly innovated with different types of reflector surfaces that CRLS doesn’t offer - like a ‘variable beam’ version that is warped with a leaver to change the spread of light into a long narrow beam. They also have the very thin lightweight versions for use for tabletop work. So they have definitely added their own innovation to the idea since it’s inception. Certainly not a true statement that they are just ‘copying whats already out there’.
One thing to keep in mind also (something you touched on yourself). Dedo heavily invested in developing an entire range of parallel light sources and adapters with the promise that many of them would be purchased and used with the CRLS system. My understanding is that this never really happened. Perhaps lightstream has helped them recover their R&D costs? Not sure? But certainly there are two sides to the story with Lightstream vs CRLS.
All this considered I feel Dedo does deserve some benefit of the doubt with the huge range of totally unique products they have brought to the market over the decades.
As for the Godox liteflow system - I agree with your points. Perhaps this will encourage the other makers to be more competitive with their pricing - there is often very inflated markups on the accessories for these reflectors that don’t make any practical sense.

Keep in mind in the earlier days of CRLS they had many many more surfaces and sizes, as they moved into larger production they wanted to streamline the initial offerings… so I don’t really feel dedo has innovated relative to the boards… and I would argue they all come out of the earlier work of CRLS -- I give him massive credit on the optics, PBI etc… the early lights similar to the pb70 for awhile were co-branded CRLS… what happened to this wonderful early collaboration, I don’t really know.

That "variable beam" reflector is based off the Lowel Variflector. Not that I ever had one. Very hard to find in Europe.

I agree with pretty much everything you were saying. It can be frustrating seeing a particular gap in my lighting kit that gets skipped over because there is a high priced industry standard, and then a cheap version aimed at content creators.
The world of tube lights is a good example. I know the internal battery patents caused a lot of issues when it came to different manufacturers interpretation of what a 2ft or 4ft light should be. But while I commend Aputure for doing something quite different with the infinibars, they also decided to ignore a home run in simply doing 2ft and 4ft versions of the MT Pro but with a decent IP rating. I'd have bought them in an instant. Or even doing a pro level version of their Amaran tubes. But now, I'll probably look at getting a few of the waterproof godox ones, since I also scuba dive and can get value that way.
The flexi-panel options were a nightmare too. I held off for years, as the budget offerings all had frustrating limitations (and I had friends with ones I could borrow in a pinch) or the pro versions were very very expensive here in Ireland. In the end, I compromised, and got a somewhat budget option because it was coming with a few nice v-lock batteries for free (and they've been used on set more than the flexi panel by now). I would've loved that flexi panel to be something like the amaran f22x with g/m shift, or the Amaran f22c with just a few more pro features (and maybe some extra size options). But I was tired of waiting. And again, now I'll probably look at the godox 600 bi for the size & output and deal with the limitations for the amazing price., because the Litemat Spectrum prices here are nuts.

Around 7 minutes you mention Astera tubes aren't IP rated, I'm under the impression they're IP65 so long as you plug the charging port.
