    I have two A. Wright knives that came unsharpened. (Annoying for I am not good at sharpening). Once sharpened, they are both workhorse knives but the F&F is ok, not great. No half-stops, proud liners, etc. BUT, they were only in the $30-$40 range shipped to the U.S. On the other hand my T.E.W. knives came much nicer out of the box, but a bit pricier too. Keep at it Martin, Illegitimi non carborundum!

      I was talking to a guy recently who was slating an opinel for its FF. It was a knife under £10. And I was trying to explain... very poorly. The cost of something should be factor on which you judge it. He also mainly has Bokers and Victorinox in his collection, so his bar is set very high.
      The sharpened edge seems to be an issue they have then. Always good hearing from you, Ed! I use that phrase at work all the time, my friend! 👊

    It’s a beautiful looking knife, definitely my preferred style of Barlow.
    I think for me the biggest no-no is the sharpness. The scuffs and scratches if light are ok, I can let that go if easily polished out. But for the price I’d expect no obvious gapping and I’d expect sharp out the box.
    Shame as it looks a beaut!
    Thanks for sharing buddy 😁

    Real shame about those issues. Wonder if it slipped through the QC ?
    Love the pattern though, looks fantastic.
    I’d contact Joseph Roger’s (Egginton) and see what they say. For the price I don’t think it’s acceptable.
    Gutted for you and hope you’re able to get this sorted out.

    So called "Hip Companies" are good at selling cheap goods for exorbitant prices!!!
    The people, if they are even real, who gave this a five star rating either got very good examples or they know nothing about knives.
    I have a couple of knives made by Egginton Group and they are Just about acceptable at a pinch but certainly nowhere near the quality of Arthur Wright or TEW.

    I got one of these with oak covers a couple of years ago,just checked it over and I'm happy to report it does not have any of the issues that your one has apart from the blade is off centre but not rubbing!
    The IXL gunstock from eggintonknives has seriously got my attention btw!

      @SteelCityKnives  Год назад +2

      😮😮😮😮
      I'm struggling to find the gunstock mate. Where can I find this??? You guys are schooling me well.
      I know they can do brilliant knives. Just might be the consistency. I'm definitely going to get more in the collection. I love the shape of this, Barlow. TBH, once it's got a decent edge on it I can live with the rest. It's that initial impression. It may sound silly, but I believe they have a duty to represent the knife makers in the past and in the future by turning out brilliant knives. I always think if this was someone's first take of a Sheffield knife.....what would they think of it? They represent a brilliant historic past. May be a lot to put on a knife maker 😂😅

  • @TheKnifeRaven
    @TheKnifeRaven Год назад +4

    While utterly beautiful, that level of quality is unacceptable for upwards of 90 quid. I *do* still love the slender Barlow shape. My Böker's offer that same style, but at a lower cost and sporting better finish...which is extremely unfortunate, since as you know, I really want to support Sheffield knifemakers. (As I'm sure you do, too) I can somewhat justify gapping or uneven grinds on a 20 GBP A. Wright. I may not like it, but I can't throw a fit over something that inexpensive. This, however, is not so easy to pass off as "just a working man's knife". While sure, you could most definitely get some use in on this piece, it's still an SFO. Which not only increases the expectations of quality, but makes it a more appealing choice for a collector/enthusiast. The price is a major issue, too. I'd pay it...provided the knife was well made. As you stated in the video, one could afford a Michael May WITH filework, a nice, polished 'Wright, or for a little jump in cost, a TEW Premier for the price on this Barlow. If extending out of the range of UK knives, you could buy an Otter, a Böker, a GEC (if you can find one) and many many others. I'd be interested in seeing other copies of the knife, as it is very possible you just got the bad one in the batch. I have had mixed experiences with Rodgers, as can sadly be said for most of the Sheffield makers, so I can't condemn them for this, as I don't have a copy to compare. Either way, I love the background on "TLC", and I'm still slightly tempted to get one of these sometime in the future. As after all, it's still a gorgeous knife with a vast degree of style and class. Cheers, as always!

    • @SteelCityKnives
      @SteelCityKnives  Год назад +3

      Always appreciate your comments, mate!
      You're right. I should have stated you could get an M. MAY with filework with that money. I will definitely not rule Joseph Rodgers out and will definitely get more in the collection. But I will call and ask them to look over the knife. Similar to Case.
      I'm confused at the moment and unsure what to buy next for the collection?! My problem is that I have a lot of choices atm. Which is sometimes a rarity for me.
      Are you finding that it has become easier to get a lot of knives recently? They have definitely become more popular the last few years.
      I was speaking to a Canadian on a discord recently. I definitely think you guys have it the hardest for being in to knives. The cost, delivery times, laws, etc.
      Hope you are well, my friend? Look forward to hearing from you. 👊

      @@SteelCityKnivesHi again! When it comes to these 'roadblocks', I tend to have an issue with picking a knife, less of finding one. There has never been a time since my collection began that I haven't wanted a bunch of knives. So yes, I understand the difficulty in making a decision. Although...
      I'd personally recommend a TEW Slim Barlow if you're having trouble making a pick. It'll be refreshing, as they showcase what Sheffield is TRULY capable of when it comes to Barlows.
      As for availability and such, we actually have fairly quick restocks. Our laws may be strict, but not nearly as bad as the UK. Blade-length laws and locking laws are thankfully not an issue, here. Although our borders tend to be a lot pickier about knives and often hold them for longer periods of time.
      I'll hopefully be uploading something in the next couple days...stay tuned! Cheers!

      I'm going to try and call them. See what they say? I know this sounds a bit mad.....
      But I always think if this was someone's first impressions of a Sheffield knife what would they think.
      Whether they like it or not, I think Sheffield cutlers have a massive responsibility. They owe it to the past and future cutlers to put out a good knife. It's an industry that is endangered and has so many things going against it. So, for the sake of just putting a decent edge on it....its disappointing. Bit of a rant mate. I apologise. I would be very disappointed at the fit and finish for the money I got a GEC knife for around £80:00 superb quality posted from USA as well, I agree about the Joseph Rogers real lambs foot I think the best looking out there but seen some bad reviews and they aren't cheap, it seems the company needs to sort out quality control, I have to say that is a good looking Barlow though shame so poorly turned out.

      I know I think this knife had serious potential to be great. Just maybe the finishing off was rushed. Hope you are well, mate? What GEC did you get? Good price for a GEC! I still struggle paying a lot for knives, but when they are done well, I can justify it....if that makes sense. 🫡 👊

      @@SteelCityKnives Hi Martin, I have a limited budget so don't usually buy what to me are expensive knives, the two exceptions are a Case Copperhead not worth the money because of poor fit and finish, the other is the GEC Texas Toothpick 4 inch so legal to carry as blade just under 3 inches, I wanted the Aqua Camel Bone but they went so quickly so I got the cheapest one being the Rosewood, beautiful knife and don't begrudge the money spent, so well made. Cheers. 😁

      Yes, I could. But unsure who takes the hit on the the company that ordered the SFO or Joseph Rodgers. But they definitely need to up their game. If this was someone's first sample of a Sheffield made knife, it would definitely disappoint. And then it may put them off for good. So, although this seems a trivial case of a poor FF knife. It's more than that....its representing a historic and respected craft. They should be trying to do it the justice it deserves. And be an ambassador for the people before and after them.

  • @davids9549
    @davids9549 10 дней назад

    100% correct. The build quality isn't good enough - that gapping alone would have me sending it straight back. And you didn't even mention the appallingly executed sharpening choil. Sadly, this QC issue is the sole reason I don't buy more Sheffield knives, and now insist on seeing any Sheffield knife before I buy it (the same applies to US-made Case knives, sadly). There are those who argue that as these are 'artisan' knives a different standard applies, but I just don't agree - on the contrary, if it's been made by hand by one maker, it means that maker decided the quality of what he/she'd made was good enough for a customer paying top dollar. Of course one dearly wants to support the 'home side', and a well made Sheffield knife is a thing to treasure, but things are unlikely to improve unless there is more 'honest and constructive' feedback like yours, so hats off to you mate.

      Sorry for the late reply, mate! I always miss comments on older videos.
      Hope you are doing well?
      I've come to love this thing. The initial opinion was very underwhelming, to say the least. But having carried it a bit. I love it. It really has grown on me. The FF is not brilliant, but if it was, I probably wouldn't carry it as much. It always gets a lot of comments when I take it out and use it.
      I kinda did a follow-up to it on one of my videos somewhere. I want perfection who doesn't, but I'm starting to take the way it was made into consideration now. At the end of the day, I could easily have returned it. But something stopped me, and I'm glad I've still got it. I'm unsure if they are still making this SFO now? So one reason to keep it...a unique piece for the collection.
      Cheers, David
