  • In the spirit of cross country high speed record setting, think Canonball run, KBB's sister site Ride.Tech (watch their e-Tron cross-country video here • NYC to LA in an Audi E... ) thought it would be a "wise" idea to drive an Audi e-Tron coast-to-coast, testing both vehicle as well as the high-speed charging network from Electrify America. KBB's Micah Muzio was dragged by his luxurious hair into the effort. Watch it now. You know you want to.

    • @Dave2four
      @Dave2four 4 года назад +1

      The answer would be nearly meaningless if comparing to an ICE. EVs aren't hit with road taxes. Meanwhile, an ICE that weighs the same pays its entire share of road taxes.

    • @MarkBraggs
      @MarkBraggs 4 года назад +1

      @TCD most states are now taxing EVs annually to recoup the road tax. It’s built into annual registration costs.

    • @Dave2four
      @Dave2four 4 года назад

      @@MarkBraggs The taxes they collect aren't nearly enough. These are 5k and 6k pound vehicles. A similar weight ICE would be taxed at about $700 a year or more in many places. In the few states where they actually slap road taxes on EVs, it's a small fraction of that. Mind you, it's not just "road" taxes that set the price of gas, there also cap and trade, and there's also emission taxes on top of that to support subsidizes of "clean" transportation. It's not even close to a level playing field. We'd all all be paying $1.xx/gallon if not for government's hand.

    • @MarkBraggs
      @MarkBraggs 4 года назад

      TCD So if we are going by weight, semi trucks should pay massive taxes correct?

    • @Dave2four
      @Dave2four 4 года назад

      @@MarkBraggs They do, per gallon. We call them "gas taxes" or "fuel taxes", but these are really just road taxes that pay for our roads. A semi truck would pay thousands in taxes each year, and that's how it should be. SInce there's somewhat of link between weight, road wear and consumption, we tax ICE cars based on fuel consumption.
      Well, since EVs are so much heavier than normal ICE, they should not only be taxed more than they are now, they should be taxed even more than the ICE cars simply due to their weight. Seriously, a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and a Tesla Model S P100D weigh more than an base level F150! Is it fair that an F150 pays more in taxes? Of course not.

    @mjhowson2389 4 года назад +7

    When you got to the end and started to mention a better way to do it, I fully expected you to say "In a Tesla Model 3 LR" or something similar. 170 real-world mile range must make a cross country trip painful. The Model 3 LR would easily get another 100 miles per charge. 50% longer range makes a big difference in a long trip like that. I also feel the current Supercharger network is superior to the Electrify America one. But I give total credit to VW for rolling out the EA network, and to Audi for taking the plunge with the e-Tron.

    • @NasaRacer
      @NasaRacer 4 года назад +1

      MJ Howson, my friend with a Model 3 LR made a cross country trip early in the summer and between going the normal pace of fast lane interstate 75-80mph and using the percentage of battery that can actually charge quickly around 80%. The effective continuous range of his Model 3 was about 220miles. He felt he stopped about twice as often and twice as long on each charging stop as he felt necessary for food, bathroom and stretches. I think EVs need at least 300 miles of “effective” range to be well suited for long distance travel. Around town city driving they are amazingly efficient.

    • @mjhowson2389
      @mjhowson2389 4 года назад +1

      @@NasaRacer So, going over the speed limit and "filling the tank" to only 80% decreases range? Yup. Same with an ICE car. I have a model 3 LR and disagree with your statement that it only has an effective continuous range of 220 miles.

    • @NasaRacer
      @NasaRacer 4 года назад

      Well we used to have a 55mph national speed limit for just that reason because it saves a lot of energy. But you try driving that speed on the freeways where you live and let me know how that works out for you. Second the rate of adding range to a liquid fuel vehicle is linear where with an EV battery charging the rate slows drastically over about 80% charge. So my friend on his trip found at a Tesla Supercharger it took nearly the same amount of time to charge from 10% to 80% as it does from 80% to 100% that combined with the fact that Superchargers aren't nearly as prevalent as gas station meant he was normally anywhere between 10%-20% each time he stopped to charge at a Supercharger during continuous long distance travel. He would then charge to about 85% and get back on the road. So that effectively means he was only using as little as 65% of the total battery capacity. But it was still the best way to cover the most miles in the shortest amount of time. Don't even get me started on how your range falls drastically if you want to run the heater as they talked about in this video. At least in a gas/diesel vehicle all the heat you want has very little if no effect on your range. Like I said EVs are amazing in certain use cases. (My mother has one for all city driving) but long distance high speed travel the technology still needs improvement.

    • @mjhowson2389
      @mjhowson2389 4 года назад

      @@NasaRacer We used to have a different speed limit? Batteries charge slower the closer they get to being full? WOW! Thanks, Captain Obvious!

    • @NasaRacer
      @NasaRacer 4 года назад

      @MJ Howson - Being generous towards a Tesla, official EPA highway range for a Model 3 LR is 318miles and assuming you hit supercharger spacing just right and pull in at 10% and charge until 85% when the speed of charging really slows. That gives you 75% usable battery capacity with reasonable charging times. That gives you 239miles of usable highway range. Then factor in that my friend traveled with the flow of fast lane traffic which was around 75-80mph opposed to EPA Highway testing which tops out at 60mph and that is how my friend consistently on a cross country trip from California to New York and back, would only get 220miles of "REAL WORLD" highway range between charging stops. So your estimate of 270 miles of real-world highway range for a Model 3 LR compared to the 170 miles for the Audi seems overly optimistic.

In an ICE, it takes 2 minutes to refuel a 20 gallon tank with a standard 10 GPM fuel pump. If you get 28 MPG, you would see a range of 560 miles. If you go 2,627.5 miles (Google estimate), you'll take less than 10 minutes of your time to refuel. That vs 21 hours charging an EV. Everyone else would probably make good use of a good chunk of the time spent charging. The reviewers mentioned charging up to 100% - not actually what you want to do to minimize time, as the last bit of charging is slower. They should have used an app to plan to trip and to advise them how much charging is needed between stops. However, given that this is such an expensive car, Audi really needs to work on closing the range gap with Tesla. But what is HORRIBLE is the reliability of these EE fast chargers is sub-par and it seems they don’t care about making their charging stations working and reliable. The “optics” may look good, but in reality they are nowhere near where Tesla is with their super chargers.

  • @USNEM
    @USNEM 4 года назад

    Electrify America is a fucking rip off lmao. Seriously, the Tesla supercharger network is LIGHT-YEARS away when it comes to reliability and efficient traveling. The etron range is a meme in itself, a model 3 with 325 miles of range it eats the etron for lunch....by the way you NEVER charge over 80% that's why you spent 21 hours charging lmao.

  • @Porsche996driver
    @Porsche996driver 4 года назад

    Look at the cost @ 3:15 because Micah can’t do math. Heard of Electrify America, cool they have fast DC charger network - but sounds like they need to update their equipment? Jiggle the connector like a running toilet whaaaat?! Plus according to charging screen they’re charging .26c per KWH which 20% more than the highest state cost (Mass.) of .22. A few states are even only .08c. What gives Electrify America?!

  • @MrSpuzzz
    @MrSpuzzz 4 года назад

    60 hour trip, 20 of which was spent charging. Not good. As comfortable as that car looks...not made for long road trips. Looks great for local driving or day trips. 175 miles real world range forces you to charge to full every stop (meaning long stops - charging from 75% to 100% takes longer than 0-75). A tesla is much more practical if road tripping is important.

    I understand the desire to make this a story, but how many people are driving their ICE cars across the country regularly? I would guess that most "long distance driving" for people to go visit family etc on a holiday weekend would call for maybe one or two charge cycles at most each way? I don't feel that range or recharge time is the be all end all way to evaluate a vehicle like an EV.

    • @Dave2four
      @Dave2four 4 года назад

      It doesn't matter. I don't want to own a second, third or fourth car just so I can travel the distance. Besides, this is all theory. In reality, you can't even charge an EV from 0-100% on a regular basis, even if it allows you to. It would degrade the battery much faster. I would never own an EV if I drive a couples hours one way on a regular basis or even on an infrequent basis, never mind across country.
