  • Today we'll look into why these other platform fighters garner a lot of hype and want to compete with Super Smash Bros but then suddenly die off. Why does Smash continue to stay on top? And will there ever be a game that can topple Smash Bros as the #1 platform fighter? Let's take a look.

BRAWL and MELEE had the best story/single player modes HANDS DOWN. Brawl was beautiful.

Definitely agree with you on all these points, I think a PlayStation All Stars 2 could've been great if they got more characters and hyped them up but they just gave up on that series.

I'd say one of the main reason is just the fact that Smash Bros has had two decades to define and refine what works in a platform fighter/crossover, meanwhile, the other games like NASB, PSASBR & MultiVersus just do surface-level things, and while Smash isn’t perfect, it knows how to perform and execute it's formula properly.

I thought about this and even smash 64 was incredible. Going back and playing it, it still holds up and is the reason this franchise took off. Yes the roster got bigger and things got fine tuned as time went on but had it not gotten so many things right in the first instalment those two decades wouldn’t exist. And there was no blueprint for Sakurai when he made smash 64, these other games have Smash to look at for inspiration but still end up falling short.

Please stop calling other platform fighters "Smash Killers". Let them exist on their own merits. They're never gonna kill Smash Brothers. Same that Palworld is never gonna kill off Pokemon. Plus they have been doing SOME things better than what Smash has currently been doing that'll hopefully get addressed in future Smash releases.

I've thought about this a lot before. You connect to your chosen characters more in Smash because you've played as them before, and they usually feel intuitive to use. Sonic's my secondary in Smash because he feels more like Sonic there then he does in his own games often. Harley Quinn is cool, but her moveset can't feel connected to something I've experienced before.

Games like Rivals of Aether (and its upcoming sequel) give me hope for platform fighters. The gameplay is tight and action-packed, the characters are cool and engaging, the sequel is even promising an improved story mode. It doesn't need to replace Smash, but I'll be fine if people can let it exist alongside Smash. One game shouldn't monopolize a whole genre, no matter how good, because there's a lot of things that one game won't or can't do that another one could, in terms of gameplay or tone or theme.
Plus, if something happens and that one game falls off, the entire genre goes with it. Related question: can anyone name any good, currently active hero shooters?

Not having a gaming audience isn't a bad thing it just means you need to put more effort into drawing people in, the problem with Nick and Warner brothers games is a notable lack of effort. Warner brothers takes it a step further by resorting to scummy tactics to squeeze money out of players rather than put in the work to make a satisfying game. Plus Sakurai has always had respect for every fighter he's put in smash, right now it's hard to feel that same respect from Warner Brothers especially when they did'nt remove a charachter like Black Adam from the relaunch, the first smash game focused on honoring Nintendo's legacy and that is what I feel the first game of another game in their style should do.
Nick, Warner Brothers, AND Sony all failed in this regard with their first games. Having charachters that were souly there for marketing that otherwise had no buisness being there. Every Smash charachter has a case for why they were put in even the more obscure charachters that Sakruai likes to pick. But in the first smash game he made the smart decision to make Captain Falcon and Ness unlockable, so it's more like you were being introduced to these new charachters even if you were a big Nintendo fan. And of Course Luigi is Mario's brother and Jigglypuff was really big in the anime at the time. My main point though is that none of the charachters feel like they were tacked on in a desperate attempt to get people to spend money in the way reboot Dante or Black Adam clearly were. Even Fire Emblem get's so much love because Sakurai sincerely thinks it's one of Nintendo's biggest franchise's and all of the charachters are fun to play even if your not a fan.

It’s not gonna happen but it would be hilarious if Multiverses was trying to get Arkham Batman but he showed up in Smash instead

It's not even that Nintendo CAN kill smash, but rather they "WILL".

"The only one that could kill smash is... Nintendo themselves."
They're certainly trying with how they're treating their dedicated fans by shutting down competitions. I swear, Nintendo is the most self-sabotaging company that somehow still survives itself. It's like it's bipolar. It feeds on the nostalgia of its iconic franchises to succeed, and hates the fans of those franchises at the same time.
