We've got Sick Seconds 2.0, the world's quickest street car, at the PRO Superstar Shootout Presented By SCAG Power Equipment at Bradenton Motorsports Park. We were going to match race Brett LaSala but unfortunately that didn't pan out so we were on our own...but somehow we found a way to lose our own match race! The motor dropped a valve mid-track and it was carnage inside. After Sick Week didn't go to plan and now this it sucks...just when we were getting somewhere...
Having been the cylinder head guy on a nitro car I can tell you the only thing that prevents the type of failure you experienced is constant service. If the valves had been removed and checked regularly they would have told you prior to this happening. The easiest way is to check over all height. If the valve is getting longer the head is being stretched. A visual of the backside of the valve may give you an indication but an increase in length tells you the head of the valve is going to come off. It is up to you to determine the amount of growth you will accept prior to replacement. I once threw away four brand new inconel exhaust valves that had one pass on them. The boss wanted to try a little more seat pressure and the swirl on the backside of the valve was visually straighter. If my memory serves me, those valves had stretched 0.100 to 0.125", and that was from one pass. Don't get me started on head droop on the exhaust valves that remained open when the engine stopped turning.
Now we know where Steve's missing valve went. 😅
Lol!
@@justincase9471 lol too early bro too early 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂🤪🤪🤪
amd steve mentioned that Tom's needed some new valves cause they have been in there a while.
Almost too early, good one
The funny part is that in Steve's newest video, he talks about how he probably needs to freshen up your valve train lol
Yeah cause Steve knows the valve train he used is crap. Typical smx issues.
This . .

Tom Bailey, so sorry you broke. You are a class act win, lose, or draw. Thank you for all you do for Drag & Drive.
Why are you sorry he broke? He was the we Todd that did not replace the valves since 2022.

Love the Pace car paint job !😊
It’s stickers… 🙃
We see the disappointment in your face Tom. Sorry for your bad luck. This event is obviously very important to you for many reasons. Hope you have better luck in the future. We are all behind you.
Well, you won the trophy for "most carnage from a dropped valve", in the contest between you and Steve ! Kinda weird that, after all the runs on both engines, they'd both have the same failure just a few days apart ! I would guess the valve ate up the hot side of the turbo too ? But "that's racin'", right ?!!
The failures were completely different.
A broken retainer takes spring pressure away allowing piston to valve contact. Can be lucky with amount of damage.
A broken valve stem is going to eat a piston and combustion chamber at a minimum every time
@jdoe9518 I understand that. But it was still a valve issue that Steve had just talked about a day ago.

That sucks Tom. As I read some of the comments from people trying to blame Steve I keep thinking that those people have probably never built anything with real power. Sure people have done little things that might make a fun street car but big power is on another level. Street able big power is another level after that. You’re going to get it man and love the dedication of you and the crew.
@@bobbyborba6460 It is Steves fault for manufacturing a ProMod engine that clearly requires more maintenance and under performs.
@ so I’m curious if you believe that a race engine doesn’t require extra maintenance and a higher than expected amount of parts. Prime example is before pac valve springs we use to change valve springs and retainers every couple of races in circle track cars. One thing about you tube videos is we all only see what the content provider wants us to.
@@bobbyborba6460 Steves Pro Mod engines break more than a Proline Hemi.
It requires more msintenance to keep it running.
@ well that the great thing you don’t have to spend your money on a Steve Morris engine. Proline will definitely take your money too. Proline must not have a parts department because nothing of there breaks. Maintenance is a must interesting thing. Does Steve need to change up his maintenance schedule? Possibly.

I really like the new livery.
Tough luck , I guess it is time for a refresh. Thanks for a great video.
New wrap makes the car look pretty darn good ..
It seems to me the Steve Morris engines are rought with problems. Almost every team that have run the SMX at one time or another have gone to the ProLine Hemi.
The SMX is basically a water jacketed 481x. The proline hemi is a pure race engine that can't do a drag and drive. No-one is switching from one to the other in the same car that I'm aware of.
@sickthemag Tom I hate that happened, but like you said it's part of the game.
Those nitro cars are insane!!
Much respect for you Tom.
The contrast is with the big timers around u zip zip after every pass with a fine tip comb looking at everything but stuff still happens with even that level of care and part replacement
I do like Steve, but I'm starting to wonder about the SMX platform...
I'm wondering why some people who buy them seem to be averse to maintenance and run them like they are a street engine.
I just realized I haven’t seen Bob in a long time. Did he leave the shop? I know doesn’t travel much… but I don’t recall seeing him in the prep videos.
Hey STEVE!! You gots some splainin to dooo!!
SM just bragged about you having "Zero" valve train issues... LOL there's a reason the big power guys TF FC change parts almost every race...
Just he a ProLine motor and all the issues are sorted.
Same issues if the maintenance is not done and which water jacketed proline puts out this sort of power?
I'm amazed how long these engines last on a marginal parts replacement program. Hats off to Steve Morris for producing 4000+ street engines.
Yeah, but I guarantee the SM haters are going to post their rants here about he and his engines.
I’m not a “SM hater” but I don’t really see the SMX as a reliable platform. I realize they are making incredible power and what they are but they seem to have more bad days than good.
@@PennyTrayshun-u8u My observation as a couch potato is that there is a bit of a difference in maintenance schedules between the guys running SMX on these drag and drives and guys running similar HP engines. At a certain level teams seem to start considering much of the valvetrain as consumables. I think Steve would be doing himself a big favor if he pushed similar maintenance schedules for these SMX engines. Valves, springs, retainers after every drag week event seems like cheap insurance and would almost certainly prevent a lot of the failures we've seen.
@@bradley3549 Wouldn't have prevented all the problems Cleetus had with it.
@@PennyTrayshun-u8u a proline hemi needs the rods changed after 26 passes. If you put it on the chip, you change all the valves, springs, retainers, and rods. It's not the fault of the SMX that Tom put it on the chip multiple times and kept sending it. If everyone running the SMX maintained them like a proline, you wouldn't be having these issues. Even the prolines can grenade for no reason. If you take the amount of miles these go on the street and still make that hp and how many of them live for the entire week, it's pretty damn amazing. Look how many of them don't get refreshed for years.
It's seems to always be something with these cars. I was thinking we were going to see a 5 second pass too 😑
Brett for rhe win
just curious, what makes you choose an engine platform to run in your racecar? Why an smx over a proline or even an MMR coyote? they all make good power, they all seem to have some sort of issues to overcome. So why one over the others?
I could be wrong but I don’t believe Proline do a drag and drive motor?
@@neilvenners3309they can, lary Larson was very successful with the proline bbc package
Well, in this case, pretty sure Tom Bailey is a bit of a business partner with Steve Morris, for starters.
As much as it pains me to say it (I'm a Ford guy), all other things being equal, an SMX will eat Coyote based stuff for breakfast.
Proline builds maximum effort race engines, they need to be loved on nearly as much as a Top Fuel engine, wouldn't last two miles in a drag & drive..
Cause drag and drive. Need something water jacketed and designed to live on the streets, cruise at 65 and idle in traffic.
Putting a ford in your Chevy is gay mate

This is completly normal 3 year valve on big valve on solid roller. All the time you over rev missing tune up you reduce life on parts.
Well that train wreck will need to come all apart and get all the crunchy bits out of everywhere inside the motor.
And inside the entire oil system; pan, pump, feed lines, dry sump tank.
I'm kind of surprised that you don't keep a spare set of heads on hand.
they are not cheap, maybe it doesnt make sense for them but who knows...have a good day
Pretty sure those heads cost more than my daily driver . Yeah the pro mod guys Have like six or sick sets of them every race.
Too much money to haul around. this is a rare event to drop valves in the se motors,
Cost for those heads is probably 75k loaded up.
And the SMX doesn’t have too many head problems.
Steve has done a great job designing reliability into a 4500 horsepower engine.
The hard part is controlling the quality of parts he doesn’t make himself.
That’s not to say that the valve was defective….. but it did explode……so that’s a consideration.
@THEVROD64 too much for repairs to the $100,000 proprietary engine design, that would be for a street legal ProMod, stored in a stacker trailer?

The irony of big boy talks& big boy toys is quite perfect this last week.
You have just convinced me I never want a race car.
The faster they go the more the money pit they are.but I've seen worse on stock car engines.
Should put in them cross bolts to catch that kind of stuff to save you some money on repairs to turbos
Darrell Gwynn LMAO 🤣 Man after my own heart.

Hey Tom....quick question: since the Radial guys and Big tire slick guys need 2 different track preps, why don't the Sick events have 1 side of the track prepped for Radial tire and tge other side prepped for the big tire slick cars? I ask because the construction of the tires is so different and the slick guys can't build their needed tire speed to get down the track...it makes sense. Even if the idea is just visited during testing. It may be a good idea.
80% of the cars are radials. It wouldn't work out from a logistics point of view.
The scary thing is Steve was just saying the other day that your retainers might be due for a change and how much damage will happen if the valves broke free and unfortunately for you, you have just shown what can happen.
@@mack1541 I was thinking the same thing, but Tom clearly states that there’s nothing wrong with this valve train. That’s not what caused the valve to drop
At 9:47 you can clearly see retainers are intact, keys and valves (or whats left of them) are ok. So technically it didn't drop a valve, it broke a valve.
@ I know i'm just pointing out how spooky it was that Steve was talking about it and 24 or so hours later Tom breaks a valve
@ I know i'm just pointing out how spooky it was that Steve was talking about it and 24 or so hours later Tom breaks a valve

Steve will be even more busier. Things happen when you make power
Everyone saying time for a proline hemi 😂. Those are non water jacketed blocks. Hence why they get pushed to the starting line
It's because they are all Cleetus fanboys and he has a proline engine. Most of them wouldn't know who proline was before that. Same with fabricators. They all think CJRC are the only people who can build drag cars now.
Tough start to 2025, car looks awesome you guys will get it right!
These smx motors need to have the valve train revised. That's really seems to be the weak spot in an otherwise incredible power plant
It’s the weak spot in any high hp motor
When you get in the 4-5,000 HP range everything is a weak link, even with being spot on with the tune.
I think the maintenance schedule needs to be revised first. Nobody out there running Pro Mod is running the same valvetrain for three seasons straight. And that's without street driving.
@@bradley3549 yeah that's valid
Looks like a maintenance issue, yes? This is a new design so the weakest links are not clearly defined, until now. Keep that valvetrain minty fresh going forward.
Proline, Coyote, Billet LS programs all had to learn through testbeds, just like the OG early Hemi based stuff.
I don't really think you can call the SMX a "new design" any more. That valve just timed out after all those hard passes and road trips..
That coyote you’re referring to is a stock block while the rest are all billet platforms. I agree the SMX is not a new design, it came out in 2018.

So if you don't have a spoon, just sit your coffee on or near the engine and it self stirs. That's a good idea!☮
Or don't put anything in your coffee and drink it up.
Hopefully Steve will find out what caused yours and his valve train failure ! Sorry it happened but Steve will figure it out !
It’s time to start tip welding the retainers together around the valve. Not too the valve. Just tac them on both sides making it impossible to float and loosing retention. Take it apart with the tip as well😮
The valve spring, retainer and cap seemed to be in place still, just dropped the valve head??
How to say "I've never disassembled valvetrain before" you don't even know the difference between a retainer and keepers, or the fact there's grooves in the top of the valve stem that the keepers lock into, if you weld the keepers, you ain't taking the valve out.
