I have had great success with old broad comb in swarm traps. One way I build new comb for broad chambers is placing deeps as honey supers on a couple of hives. This way I don’t disturb the broad chamber with empty frames and get honey plus fresh comb. The down side is the deeps are very heavy when taking them off. It’s why I only do it on a couple hives for new comb purposes. Great video and keep up the good work.

It’s funny that all beekeepers are thinking the same thing this time of year. “Spring,”
I also have several frames I will be reclaiming before to long. What’s nice about rendering your wax, you can always reuse it again on your plastic foundations after you clean them up. Nice video Kevin!! Happy beekeeping from Vermont...🐝

Another good video my friend. And one things for sure you don't get a whole lot of good usable wax from the really old comb. Thanks for sharing.

Great video. I sure was hoping you were single doing that in the kitchen or this would have been your last video...

i was told those cocoons can be used as swarm bait. Have you tried that before?

bigsmile542 just mentioned the same thing in the comment section. No...hadn't heard of that before today. I have a little concern about attracting more was moths than bees...but since I've only caught hornets and mice in my swarm traps in the past 3 years.....I might have to try it before I can dismiss it.

Dump that waste cocoon / wax mix on sheets of newspapers (and roll it and cut it) or old egg boxes... Beautiful free nice smelling firelighters for your BBQ or fireplace ;-), no waste

Ironic that I was out here in my shop cleaning up 80 frames and some brood boxes when my bell went off notifying me of your new video. Nice to know I’m not the only person in Wisconsin spending this Saturday night getting ready for spring.
    Thanks Carl

Since you were a cave man and did this in your house, was there a nasty odor? On Plastic foundation I suppose you would just scrape it off, disinfect, and/or replace the foundation?

lol..... no bad odor....plastic foundation you warm up a bit and then scrape off (on hot days, it scrapes easy)...no need to use the water technique with that.....just render your wax down per usual in a crockpot or whatever vessel is your wax melter.

no need to replace the plastic foundation...you can disinfect and they will pull the residual wax on the foundation
