I did not know this was a practice, but I am not surprised to hear of it. If someone takes a copy of an ancient icon, and the customer is aware of the shortcut, that is one thing, but taking an image of an icon that was done contemporaneously and passing it off is a copyright violation in every country I know of. In other words, the actual THEFT of a living artist's work.
