What might an Australian icon look like
My grandfather ❤
Dear Peter, this is excellent! I learned from it and I love watching it as it's so peaceful! so just for understanding: rabbit skin glue is the glue that goes first and when I add white powder(gesso?) to that same rabbit skin glue its what people call primer? what exactly is that white powder? should I just ask I need Gesso in the form of powder or can I just get liquid Gesso? thank you!
The white power is called whiting or gilder's whiting in the art supply shops in Australia and UK. The chemical composition is mainly calcium carbonate.
@@PeterBlackwood thank you for fast reply! can I ask you one more?. I want to paint with oil paint on linen which is glued to wood as you show here or in other videos. so do you have experience what should I pay attention to? I would roughly guess I might not need so many layers of gesso? but I have almost no clue. thank you in advance!
I mean instead of egg tempera to use oil colours. I am not ready to jump up to tempera yet.
@@davitchaganava9622 I have so little experience with oil paint I think you should consult an oil artist.
@@PeterBlackwood thank you anyway! I still follow your method before I figure the rest out. one thing I would add is, I think one should use rabbit skin glue from both sides if a wooden panel is larger, 50*60 cm for example. I did the way you showed and in the morning wood was bent pretty strongly. so next day I flipped the whole board and did the other side but this time used some weight, I hope ill find a middle ground so it stays flat. wood is spruce I believe its called in English. anyway. I guess doing things is the only way to learn. thus thank you so much! you helped me a lot!
I know this is an old video, I hope I get a reply. I’m new to painting icons, so varnishing the whole finished icon, including gold leaf halo , not real gold is ok with liquitex varnish???
Jesus loves you 🙏❤️
So beautiful❤
From mexico...I love your classes , I learn a lot ...thanks ,God bless you!
Hello Mr. Blackwood, would a varnish used for acrylic paintings be good for an egg tempera icon? I usually use spray varnish, but the last time I did so (kamar varnish) the smell was so strong! I'm afraid to light a candle in front of this icon!
Maria, many of my students still use spray varnish. We always apply it outside and give a couple of thin layers in order to avoid drips. We have never had any trouble with candles and spray varnish once it is quite dry. I now use an acrylic gloss varnish. It is easy to apply and dries quickly and does not have a toxic smell. Two coats usually suffices. The brand is Atelier. Liquitex would also be suitable.
Hello Mr Blackwood, what is the best kind of wood to select when making icon boards? Or at least a couple of good suggestions. I bought a wood board at a craft store but find it’s too soft and warps easily.
I have used pine at least 19mm thick. 25mm (1") would be better. This can warp a little so having the heart of the wood as the face of the icon is important so that any bending is outward and not inward. I am favoring 18mm marine ply. It is stable and reliable. Hope this helps.
Thank you 🙏
Mr. Blackwood, lately my gesso has been a bit 'bubbly' and this creates tiny bubbles on the panel, which turn into pinpricks or tiny holes. What can I do to prevent bubbles in the gesso?
Those pin holes are so annoying. The first coat of gesso is important. Tiny air pockets can get caught in the fabric so it is vital that we rub the gesso into the linen with our fingers (see 2:30 on the video). No guarantees but it should help. Good luck.
I will travel to Russia to see my history, Putin sends the best regards to the nation
I love your videos here in mexico we dont have teachers of iconography ...😢
Science & common sense project a great truth. No desert region is the origin of any White skinned tribe or peoples. The sun baked brown skin is to protect you from the sun. Getting sun burn & skin cancer is a deadly giveaway that a people are not indigenous. The East European North Kingdom of Arabs & Jews project a staunch reality of who is not of the area originally. As they have the world highest skin cancer rate of Melanoma.
Thanks for the advice! Your candle is so beautifully and lovingly painted. Fabulous! ❤
Thank you so much 🙏
Mr. Blackwood, if there is left over glue, how should one keep it so that it doesn't lose its adhesiveness?
Keep it in the fridge or, for a longer time, in the freezer. It is an animal product so it will go off and smell terrible. Then it is time to throw it out.
Show everything but not black Jesus simply because I need to sleep better tonight feeling good about myself. I must feel special at all cost.
Oh your special boo! The Lord is Black❤ Hallelujah Yahushua 😅
Being special comes great responsibility.
You keep praying to your God and we'll be fine with our God
I don’t think so not today it is what it is.
More lies. The devil is a liar. They cannot tell the truth. Jesus said You are like your father, liar, a father of lies.
Do you have online courses
I have been thinking of providing an online course for artists unable to attend an icon class in person. This would consist of step by step demonstrations and opportunity for personalized coaching. It would be helpful to get some feedback on this idea. My email address is pdbalckwood47@gmail.com Please not that there are online icon teachers working at present. One I know of is at www.sacredmurals.com
Thank you for these useful informations
Fake pictures u know they were moors be truthful Peter
Thank you for your demonstration. It is easy to follow and understand. How many ply must the board have? I have seen proper plywood locally with 7 layers. Is that good enough? I had heard I need a plywood with 13 layers. Is that necessary?
Use whatever works for you. If it doesn't warp when gesso is applied is should be good. Larger icons, say, about A3 rather than A4 could be more risky. For most reliable stability I prefer marine ply which is 19mm.
16:45 he said something about the dark paint but I couldn't understand him.
Icons were covered in a varnish of linseed oil that turned very dark over time. It was wrongly thought that these old icons were originally painted with dark paint. Until modern restoration methods were used to reveal the original bright colours, many icons were painted with dark paint assuming that was the correct tradition of icon painting.
It's been known since that most of the history is hidden and being translated on favour of those who benefit from it but the truth shall always remain in plain sight for those who believe.....
@@PeterBlackwoodThank you so much for this explanation as it’s a little hard to understand the speaker with the echo.

Years ago, my partner used to work with Juan Denysenko in the USA. He carved the iconostasis to Mr Denysenko's design while Mr Denysenko painted the icons. They created works for a number of US Ukrainian Orthodox churches.
I did not know this was a practice, but I am not surprised to hear of it. If someone takes a copy of an ancient icon, and the customer is aware of the shortcut, that is one thing, but taking an image of an icon that was done contemporaneously and passing it off is a copyright violation in every country I know of. In other words, the actual THEFT of a living artist's work.
Good point.
I had no idea how easy it could be. Many thanks.
Call me silly if you want to --- I would love to try my hand at icon painting, but I am a vegetarian. I do not mind using unfertilized eggs for the tempera, but balk at rabbit skin glue. Is there a viable alternative that would work as well? Thank you all.
Sorry, I can't help you. An art supplier might know.
😊woaw beautiful explanation...thanks for sharing your knowledge
Black history.. Yes indeed
Excuse me, is acrylic paint used for painting candles?
Yes, acrylic paint works well. I have recently discovered that better than apply the gesso I used last year is a product by Jo Sonja called All Purpose Sealer. Much easier and more stable.
Thanks a lot from Mexico
Thank you!
Praise be to God! The Easter Triduum awaits us sooner
My second board turned out much much better. I followed the instructions more precisely. The use of the spatula, takes some practice. Thank you!
Ok! I'm on my third board now and each one is better. Thank you again for this video.

Thank you! My first board turn out very good. And the process was not as messy as I thought it would be. When I mixed the glue I used the same measurements but added boiling water, mixed gently and then let it rest for 3 hours. For the very last sanding I used a fine grade (600). The whole process took me 2 days, but I admit I took my time. Perseverance, Patience and Prayer always works!
So pleased you found the video helpful. I was interested that you used boiling water. I have seen rabbit skin glue fail when it has been over heated (above 50 degrees) as it loses its adhesive quality.
I poured the boiling water in a glass cup and from there scooped it into the jar with the glue... maybe it had time to cool off? So far it's holding up. I will be more attentive to the temperature on my next board.
It's good to show whats true to c n grow mentally n spiritual
