It’s actually stated in very early comics from the Lee and Ditko run that Spidey’s lenses are a mirror like reflective surface. And, while I do prefer him having white eyes, it’s really cool to see the reflective eyes become a little more well known.

Alex Ross is what first comes to mind for chrome spidey lenses, wouldn’t be surprised if his art inspired the Raimi suit having super reflective lenses in posters and key moments especially since he made some concepts for them. It does look a little weird in figure form but in drawings and dedicated photos it can be used really creatively having things reflecting on them!
Alex Ross actually did di a concept for the suit that they didn't ultimately go for so definitely wouldn't surprise me if they were influenced by him still in the final design
@@BrethrenOfDarkness yep, that red and black suit was probably my first ever exposure to his art in the og spiderman movie game were it was included, also both that suit and the normal suit had chrome lenses during gameplay and all the artwork and portraits it was the coolest thing ever
The chrome eyes are from the mini series Marvels, written by Kurt Busiek and painted by Alex Ross, in fact Ross art for Marvel always looks like chrome, like his Bucky Captain America
God, I love Alex Ross. Absolutely one of my favorite artists, just gorgeous work. All of his metallic characters look wild. Surfer and Colossus in particular.
Alex ross draws the shape of the eyes like ditko. He always goes for classic. The eye shape is more like erick larson 90's shaped. But the metalic reflective lenses on it makes me think its more mark bagley ultimate spiderman cover art inspired
The chrome lenses come from Alex Ross and a panel that explains how Peter, despite how artists drew and continued to draw him, is actually using peices of one way glass for his lenses
tbh i think the "squinty" eyes work bc they are similar to art by people like humberto ramos, especially with the more angled front spider logo. yes, ramos didn't make the black of the eyes THAT big, but the black to white ratio is similar enough to look like his art or a style like his
I got the classic suit ps4 Spidey a while ago because I figured that that was going to be the best one for a while for a classic comic book look suit. After seeing your review, I feel justified in that decision. It’s not a bad figure but just inferior imo. It looks cheaper than it should. It looks off in some way. And that side by side comparison really nailed home how superior the classic suit is imo. This just doesn’t look like a hot toys level figure to me.
I love the colors on this suit. I thought the classic suit was perfect but it almost looks color faded next to this one. But super happy we are finally getting comic inspired figures, hopefully we have some villains coming soon.
This is incredible! I'm probably not gonna pick this one up and continue using the classic suit as a comic book figure (I personally prefer the smaller eyes and lighter blue from the silver age). Now if they release a John Romita Sr era inspired Spidey then we can talk! Hope they release more comic inspired figures, especially Batman and the Fantastic Four!
Been waiting for this one! The squinted eyes and the black sections not shrinking are similar to what other Spider-man artists do at the time (Mark Bagley, Humberto Ramos) personally not a fan as they should have gone for that John Romita Sr. look when it came to the eyes, overall still a solid figure and a great review as always
Yeah, I feel like they limited themselves making the eyes key in the way they do, maybe with a different design they could’ve thrown in even more eye shapes
Another greatly comprehensive review Justin. I watched it early this morning and it reinforced my want of it. Fortunately I scored one with SS today and I can't wait to put it with the comic Iron Man.
I got mine in Tuesday. I just couldn't resist it's a limited vintage Spider-Man concept. I think that HotToys could've given us a few more eye piece options as well as wired fabric wings . Overall he is a fantastic piece to add to the collection!
The chrome eyes was a Lee and Ditko idea. The original mask had 2-way lenses but it was drawn as white because it's ridiculous to ask people to draw accurate reflections on a curved surface over and over
I’ve never really been much of a fan of a lot of the “classic” 1/6 Spider-Man figures, but this is just beautiful to me, it just looks perfect, the colours, the style of the suit, the shapes and sizes of the emblems and lenses. It’s a really cool figure
Thanks for the video. This should have been a Hono release for $160 USD like the upcoming Wolverine. I understand the high price point for the limited edition but I do think for that money, Hot Toys should have included an alternate head with smaller eyes (like the box art), as well as a Peter Parker head. While this looks nice, I’ll probably stick with my Classic Videogame Spidey for now with the hope that Hono releases an all spandex comic Spidey down the line. I do like that No Way Home finally suit for a Classic look as well. Decisions, decisions 😀
This could have been such a perfect figure if they chose to include the classic Romita Sr lenses. Those big lenses aren’t my favorites and don’t match the rest of the body, which is classic. They chose to go with the Bagley lenses (it’s not even the McFarlane ones) and as a huge Spider-Man fan they’re not my favorites. Everything else is pretty amazing.
The eye indents make him look more like Deadpool than Spidey. Glad it’s far from perfect. I can save my money if they ever drop Spectacular from Across the Spider-Verse
Justin, glad to see you back on the review horse. The embedded web hand is a very nice touch. We might get 10 more Spiderman related figures in the next 12 months, so if you miss out on this one, there will always be another figure.
I personally kinda how it looks like a guy in a costume rather than someone who’s been vacuumed sealed in it. It feels like this is what a real life Peter Parker could make their costume look like. And like you said those proportions are realistic too.
21:10 While the comic book Spiderman fig here looks classic as it should be- I dont like how it's a mix of every art style of Spidey being drawn by separate artists, would've preferred if they just go straight to Steve Ditko style. So for this comparison, I prefer the Insomniac's take on the classic suit
Wow. It really looks like it was from a comic book. And I love spider man having huge eyes. That’s why I like tasm 2’s too. People hate tasm 1’s suit for no reason. I loved it when I was a kid.
The head is the worst part and I just can’t look past the awkward weblines and cuts when we’ve seen them do a better job on the ps4 comic Spidey. That one just looks better in every category for me.
The chrome eyes are so unique and unusual but I absolutely love them. I bet it’s going to make this figure extremely sought after in a few years, I put money on it…
what a missed opportunity. Wrong colors, really strange eyes, the classic version from the video game is still the best version if you want a Spidey that resembles the comics.
It’s a missed opportunity. They should have modeled this figure after Alex Ross’ art. His spidey fits hot toys perfectly. Basically, a realistic John Romita Sr with you guessed it, chrome eyes.
It’s kinda weird that the box has the amazing fantasy 15 pose despite this figure looking more like the ultimate spider man that was drawn by mark bagley. Doesn’t really matter though, this figure is still peak 👌😮💨
@JustinsCollection No worries. The cool thing about these Spidey poses is I wonder if the hot toys figures can pull off those contortionist spider poses from the comics
What an awesome figure Justin. The chrome lenses reminds me of the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man mask eye lenses. Great figure all around even the packaging is gorgeous. I absolutely Love it. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this amazing figure and have a great day.
I wish I was one of these commenters saying they couldn’t justify the price. I hate that I’d pay double that for this guy 😂 he’s exactly what I’ve been wanting to see in a Spider-Man figure.
I Love Action Figures Based on Comics and Cartoons as well. Alex Ross done a Great Job making Comic Art "Spider-man." Especially Hot Toys. They nailed it and made it Comic Accurate too. So Cool! It also came with many Accessories, an Awesome Diorama Background, and Stand too. You Definitely can't Beat that! Very Entertaining and Informative as always. ❤ the Video. Thanks Justin for Sharing! 🤩🤩👍👍
I love everything about this figure from the color choice to its proportions, the only thing that bothers me is the rubbery suit. It always aggravates me when these expensive companies decide to use clothes materials that can’t stand up to posing, personally I don’t want to buy an articulated figure to use as a statue. At least a statue will be in a dynamic pose permanently.
Spider-Man's eyes are canonically chrome in the comics. His lenses are made of one-way glass, its just a lot easier to leave them white so the books come out on time. Alex Ross usually paints spidey with mirror lenses.
