It’s actually stated in very early comics from the Lee and Ditko run that Spidey’s lenses are a mirror like reflective surface. And, while I do prefer him having white eyes, it’s really cool to see the reflective eyes become a little more well known.
Nice!
Note:the web wings are also drawn with a tint of purple in the Romita Sr. run of the character.

Я удивлен, что визорам пучка никто не придает должного внимания. Ведь он стремился сделать виденье как у насекомого и охватывать больше окружения. Вначале это были зеркала, а потом соты. Сейчас же это просто маска
Good point
The chrome eyes are from the mini series Marvels, written by Kurt Busiek and painted by Alex Ross, in fact Ross art for Marvel always looks like chrome, like his Bucky Captain America
God, I love Alex Ross. Absolutely one of my favorite artists, just gorgeous work. All of his metallic characters look wild. Surfer and Colossus in particular.
The original comics also said that Peter’s lenses were like a one-way mirror
Nice thanks for the info!
Took the words out of my mouth soon as I saw the chrome eyes I knew Alex Ross
Alex ross draws the shape of the eyes like ditko. He always goes for classic. The eye shape is more like erick larson 90's shaped. But the metalic reflective lenses on it makes me think its more mark bagley ultimate spiderman cover art inspired
Alex Ross is what first comes to mind for chrome spidey lenses, wouldn’t be surprised if his art inspired the Raimi suit having super reflective lenses in posters and key moments especially since he made some concepts for them. It does look a little weird in figure form but in drawings and dedicated photos it can be used really creatively having things reflecting on them!
Alex Ross actually did di a concept for the suit that they didn't ultimately go for so definitely wouldn't surprise me if they were influenced by him still in the final design
@@BrethrenOfDarkness yep, that red and black suit was probably my first ever exposure to his art in the og spiderman movie game were it was included, also both that suit and the normal suit had chrome lenses during gameplay and all the artwork and portraits it was the coolest thing ever
This ❤
Oh nice
tbh i think the "squinty" eyes work bc they are similar to art by people like humberto ramos, especially with the more angled front spider logo. yes, ramos didn't make the black of the eyes THAT big, but the black to white ratio is similar enough to look like his art or a style like his
Yeah for sure
I personally kinda how it looks like a guy in a costume rather than someone who’s been vacuumed sealed in it. It feels like this is what a real life Peter Parker could make their costume look like. And like you said those proportions are realistic too.
Agreed!
I got the classic suit ps4 Spidey a while ago because I figured that that was going to be the best one for a while for a classic comic book look suit.
After seeing your review, I feel justified in that decision. It’s not a bad figure but just inferior imo. It looks cheaper than it should. It looks off in some way. And that side by side comparison really nailed home how superior the classic suit is imo. This just doesn’t look like a hot toys level figure to me.
I feel you!
I got mine in Tuesday. I just couldn't resist it's a limited vintage Spider-Man concept. I think that HotToys could've given us a few more eye piece options as well as wired fabric wings . Overall he is a fantastic piece to add to the collection!
Love the way he turned out!
The chrome lenses come from Alex Ross and a panel that explains how Peter, despite how artists drew and continued to draw him, is actually using peices of one way glass for his lenses
Nice
Been waiting for this one! The squinted eyes and the black sections not shrinking are similar to what other Spider-man artists do at the time (Mark Bagley, Humberto Ramos) personally not a fan as they should have gone for that John Romita Sr. look when it came to the eyes, overall still a solid figure and a great review as always
Yeah, I feel like they limited themselves making the eyes key in the way they do, maybe with a different design they could’ve thrown in even more eye shapes
Awesome!
This could have been such a perfect figure if they chose to include the classic Romita Sr lenses. Those big lenses aren’t my favorites and don’t match the rest of the body, which is classic. They chose to go with the Bagley lenses (it’s not even the McFarlane ones) and as a huge Spider-Man fan they’re not my favorites. Everything else is pretty amazing.
Oh yeah for sure, maybe next time!
THAT BOX ART IS BEAUTIFUL
Agreed!
The chrome eyes was a Lee and Ditko idea. The original mask had 2-way lenses but it was drawn as white because it's ridiculous to ask people to draw accurate reflections on a curved surface over and over
Oh intersting!
The head is the worst part and I just can’t look past the awkward weblines and cuts when we’ve seen them do a better job on the ps4 comic Spidey. That one just looks better in every category for me.
Yeah its not ideal
This is incredible! I'm probably not gonna pick this one up and continue using the classic suit as a comic book figure (I personally prefer the smaller eyes and lighter blue from the silver age). Now if they release a John Romita Sr era inspired Spidey then we can talk! Hope they release more comic inspired figures, especially Batman and the Fantastic Four!
Fair enough!
By the time I can afford this in a little over a month, no way there's any left, but man I LOVE this figure
Damn!
what a missed opportunity. Wrong colors, really strange eyes, the classic version from the video game is still the best version if you want a Spidey that resembles the comics.
Fair enough
Thanks for the video.
This should have been a Hono release for $160 USD like the upcoming Wolverine. I understand the high price point for the limited edition but I do think for that money, Hot Toys should have included an alternate head with smaller eyes (like the box art), as well as a Peter Parker head. While this looks nice, I’ll probably stick with my Classic Videogame Spidey for now with the hope that Hono releases an all spandex comic Spidey down the line. I do like that No Way Home finally suit for a Classic look as well. Decisions, decisions 😀
No probs! I agree actually
amazing figure, just bought this a few days ago , probably my favorite spidey in my collection. Great review btw.
Thank you!
14:48 That's the look of a grumpy wet cat.
Lol
I love the colors on this suit. I thought the classic suit was perfect but it almost looks color faded next to this one. But super happy we are finally getting comic inspired figures, hopefully we have some villains coming soon.
Agreed!
this figure looks awesome!
I gotta say, this Spidey suit is what I imagine him if Spider-Man was in the Sony-Verse.
Nice
It’s kinda weird that the box has the amazing fantasy 15 pose despite this figure looking more like the ultimate spider man that was drawn by mark bagley. Doesn’t really matter though, this figure is still peak 👌😮💨
Legit
Justin, glad to see you back on the review horse. The embedded web hand is a very nice touch.
We might get 10 more Spiderman related figures in the next 12 months, so if you miss out on this one, there will always be another figure.
Back to stay!
What an awesome figure Justin. The chrome lenses reminds me of the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man mask eye lenses. Great figure all around even the packaging is gorgeous. I absolutely Love it. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this amazing figure and have a great day.
Nice! My pleasure!
In MY opinion (which means all of nothing, realistically) this looks like a Hot Toy of a Spider-Man cosplayer, or the actor who plays the Universal Theme-park Spider-Man, rather than being the real McCoy. There's just something about it that screams "I am not real"
Oh ok!
@@JustinsCollection And that isn't to say that all Hot Toys feel that way, for me. I've seen some incredibly realistic ones. There's just something off about this one, I can't really put my finger on it.
I seem to be one of the few who LOVE this. I always loved the massive eyes, I love the visible seams, body looks great, chrome eyes, it’s amazing.
Even as a kid, I hated how they always made the suit look perfect with no seams or wrinkles, this is how I imagine a real life suit, seams and wrinkles gives that realistic feel and how I always envisioned the comic style in real life.
I love it too!
I hate seams and ugly wrinkles with a passion! 😅 i keep them in nice poses that have no wrinkles
I’m still waiting for my Spider-Man 2 Peter and Miles from Pop Collectables. They don’t do DHL shipping but we only have DHL. I hope to get them before Christmas.
Hope you get him soon!
hey man hope you get a chance to read this but with that arm articulation would it be possible to get him into a two hand swing pose?
I think so!
I think they were going for the Spiderverse reflective lenses effect with the chrome but it just does not hit the same without the exaggerated chromatic aberration that Miles have.
Could be!
I could hear Christopher Daniel Barnes' voice from this Spider-Man in a way. Even though he wasn't the VA who was in the Capcom crossover games (Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel vs Street Fighter, and Marvel vs Capcom 1 & 2)
Sick!
This is like the 90's spider-man of the comics
Kinda!
love that the joints are hidden i always find them ugly and spoil the illusion
i think what would make this better is a muscle suit underneath the fabric as he looks a little scrawny and tighter spandex material that does not fold up so much
Fair!
The chrome eyes look vaguely creepy to me despite the inspiration. The colors really pop but I think I’ll stick with my classic suit Spidey. Thanks for the look see!
Oh damn!
Another greatly comprehensive review Justin. I watched it early this morning and it reinforced my want of it. Fortunately I scored one with SS today and I can't wait to put it with the comic Iron Man.
Hope you enjoy it!
I thought I was getting a review on the retro 90's spider-man game figure because how bad my quality was etheir way he still looked fire
Damn
Chrome eye are the made for tv movie spider-man as well as the exposed web shooters
Nice
21:10 While the comic book Spiderman fig here looks classic as it should be- I dont like how it's a mix of every art style of Spidey being drawn by separate artists, would've preferred if they just go straight to Steve Ditko style. So for this comparison, I prefer the Insomniac's take on the classic suit
Fair!
Thx HT for bringing us back to old day
Yes!
0:18 the box is firee love your video keet it up 🔥🔥
Thanks
Awesome review! What a nice looking figure. The material look kind of fragile though - I'd be tempted to wear static free gloves when handling.
Yeah it is a bit
the fully squinted ones look like Deadpool on him lol
True
Hey Justin, I'm really interested to see your thoughts and opinions on the new BvS Batman, will a figure preview be coming up?
Yep!
The eye indents make him look more like Deadpool than Spidey. Glad it’s far from perfect. I can save my money if they ever drop Spectacular from Across the Spider-Verse
Agreed
Gah no chance for any input (they do listen *sometimes*!!) - I agree if only they could have given us Ditko and/or Romita classic eyes, whether as separate elements or multiple heads. Rather than the McFarlane eye look. And maybe instead of the onomatopoeia. Oh well, not "definitive" comic booky to me even as a comic Spidey fan...
Swap out heads would have been the ideal way of doing that imo
Personally, I’m not to worried about the creases. If a 15 year old were to make a Spider-Man suit with minimal resources there would be tons of creases
Same with seem lines
Fair enough!
I would love for a movie to have a suit that looks like this
Me too!
Didn’t know that this figure is gonna come out
Yeah!
Still prefer the classic one better
I agree the classic suit is my go to Ditko style figure.
Fair enough
This looks so damn good. Hot toys needs to stop with these limited releases. We want this.
Agreed!
Amazing review as always! Does the suit material stress or pull in any areas?
The blue parts will I think
I wish we would get a spectacular spider-man figure or a kraven from the new game
Me too
The shape is very 90s Mark Bagley.
Yeah!
as much as i appreciate the accuracy of the chrome eyes, in my opinion, they stick out like a sore thumb, they would have completely ruined this figure for me, if there was no, non-chrome option, but thats just me
Yeah they don’t work here
It reminds me of a third party offering where they tried hard, but fell short in lots of differing places.
Oh damn
This is the only hot toys I want
Hopefully I can get it
I hope you can!
Am I the only one that thinks this looks like the spider man from the ride at universal studios orlando
Yeah he kinda does!
@@JustinsCollection have you ever been on that ride cause I am going on it in about two weeks and if you have what was your experience with the ride and if you ever do can you do a clog in islands of adventure I know you don’t blog but it whould be awsome to see you go onto superhero rides
I love everything about this figure from the color choice to its proportions, the only thing that bothers me is the rubbery suit. It always aggravates me when these expensive companies decide to use clothes materials that can’t stand up to posing, personally I don’t want to buy an articulated figure to use as a statue. At least a statue will be in a dynamic pose permanently.
Yeah that was such an odd decision
The buildings design reminds me A TON of the broadway show “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark from around 2010. It’s crazy.
Oh nice!
I don't own any of them, but I think the classic video game one looks better.
Fair enough
The chrome eyes are a reference to alex ross, who drew spidey with very reflective eyes that looked chrome
Nice!
It’s a missed opportunity. They should have modeled this figure after Alex Ross’ art. His spidey fits hot toys perfectly. Basically, a realistic John Romita Sr with you guessed it, chrome eyes.
Agreed!
Your review is very good
Thanks!
It's beautiful
He is!
the squinty eyes remind me of early humberto ramos artwork, where he looks like he's squinting but the black areas of the eyes are big. Not sure if its intentional though
Oh cool!
Ultimate spiderman
Maybe!
This is the figure I’ve been waiting for
Nice!
I think if Hono studios was made before this Spidey, we could've gotten a better figure. All fabric suit, more classy look, no weird chrome eyes, and I honestly feel like he could've been cooler (and cheaper)
Edit: Same thoughts and feelings with the Iron Man comix suits (classic, stealth, and War Machine), I do like the flat look, but man their too expensive for how they look. Thanks for reading my dumb thoughts
Maybe!
Great review! The lenses don't really speak to me but the colors on the suit and the body proportions are spot on
Nice
The McFarlanesque eyes are absolutely dope
They are!
This figure bothers me so very much. Called it classic, but they are not sticking to any one design. It’s this weird blend of modern and classic and random Erik Larsen style lenses. Just….no. I’m well aware the lenses are supposed to be reflective technically, but they’re drawn white unless it’s done by Alex Ross or it’s a hyper realistic and zoomed shot of the mask. The white just looks better on figures. And why are we referencing the animated series but nothing about the figure is of that style outside of it being the red and blue suit. Just weird and super exclusive too, who did they make this for? Resellers who buy it all anyways? Because this ain’t for fans of the classic look, cuz it’s fucking it up lol
Fair enough
Justin do you know if this is the same body as the advanced suit 2.0? I’m wondering if this will look good next to the black suit that just released. Great review man!
I don't think it is
I have the opportunity to pick this up but I’m worried about the material degrading over time unless I just keep him museum posed. Anyone’s thoughts, advice or opinions are welcome!
Yeah you would need to keep it in a museum pose
That Spider-Man looks like the Spider-Man game Spider-Man ultimate.
True!
Saw this up for order and i was like, this spidey is neither this nor that version, it’s just a cluster fuck of “nah the buyers wun notice, it’s spiderman, everybody buys spiderman”
Easy pass for me as soon i noticed it resemebled NOTHING like TASM animated series. The name plate almost had me though but NAH NAH
Yeah its a mix I guess
Would've loved if this favored more is an "artistic" flare.... Say, thinner frame, narrower hips and waist etc..
Fair
Waiting for sideshow to announce the PO so I can try to get it. 😬
Hope you get him!
The most beautiful spiderman I've ever seen.
Nice!
Love it so good
I'm glad you like it!
Those eyes are definitely giving me Marvel Vs Capcom vibes.
Nice
I kinda wish they would have just simplified it down. Got rid of the flimsy backdrops and just released this widely as a Hono studio figure.
Fair
Looks really cool and unique. Im excited for these comic book looking figures.
Me too!
Is it still releasing on the sideshow website too?
No idea!
still laughing at 12:48 " the lenses do reming me of mcfarlane, bagley, and ultimate spidey." if youre confused at my comment google mark bagley then re-read my comment lol
I don't get it, they do remind of me of those artists styles
@justin's. Today jan 1 , 2024, spiderman tobey no way home has just release. Cant wait to see your review later
Can't wait to get him!
That spider on his chest is really BUGGING me lol it looks like an ant spider hybrid spiders only have 2 body segments not 3 … what ever is on his chest is not a spider at all … no one noticed this?
Oh ok!
I’d be asking for my money back this is terrible….you can see the cotton threads the spider man suit doesn’t have cotton threads
Oh
aint a fan of that little thing that comes up on his forehead due to sewing stuff, i think a sculpted head woulda worked better, just like with ps4 spidey
Yeah weird they didn't do sculpted
I wish I was one of these commenters saying they couldn’t justify the price. I hate that I’d pay double that for this guy 😂 he’s exactly what I’ve been wanting to see in a Spider-Man figure.
Haha damn!
I don't see nothing great in this new Hot Toys Spidey figure, it's just a generic Spidey look! It's not Ditko, it's not Romita sr (my favourite, cause it's perfect) It's not Mcfarlane, it's not Alex Ross, even 90's animated series (except that piece of diorama, why? I don't know) it's just a generic Spidey than you cand find in cheap merchan. I love the mirror lens because of Alex Ross (but no the form than they choose for the figure, it's ugly) the rest sucks. Big hug Justin!
Each to their own!
It probably sounds so generic to say this but I love spider man suits that are like that with red, blue, and the giant eyes
Haha nah me too
They made Spidey skip leg day.
Built upper body and slim legs looks so wrong.
:/
Fair enough
The maximum squinted eyes make him look like the Humberto Ramos spiderman.
Kinda!
“With great power, comes great responsibility”
-old guy who died
Damn
This seems rushed but full of neat things and ideas, those web lines on the head, that's a shame
Agreed
The reflective eyes seems more Ultimate Spider-Man rather than Amazing
Fair
This thing is sweet but I don’t think I could pay what people are selling them for
Damn
Guess I’ll have to make a DC and MARVEL classics collection 🫡
Nice!
I hoped we get a Gwen Stacy and Mary jane Watson 1/6 scale figures soon to go with Spidey.
Agreed
Its kinda strange that it looks like they used insomniac Spider-Man for the box art 🤔
Kinda
He looks like Deadpool with full squint lenses
Kinda
