It is ABSOLUTELY FALSE that the French showed massive cowardice during WW2 against the Germans. French soldiers in the field fought valiantly and courageously against the attacking German forces. France lost because the idiotic (and that is putting it mildly) French generals were using WW1 strategy & tactics in WW2. We should never forget that the French Army suffered HUGE casualties protecting the retreating Allied forces at Dunkirk.

Another great reason to bury the tank is to remove the range advantage of another tank. For example the tiger could kill a t34 from 2km compared to the 1km the t34 could kill a tiger but by burying the tank you reduce your hitbox for a lack of better word. By doing so the enemy has to move closer to get the same accuracy as before.
Or just dial your ranging in from the same distance
@@lordbluebaron2270 the ranging would not change by burying the lower half of the tank as both tanks are at the same distances, what it does is reduce the size of the target to less than 50% of what it was. Think of it like a person using the corner of a building as cover, the distance between shooters did not change, nor did the weapon stats, nor the magnification on the weapons. The only thing changing there is tbe person behind cover exposes less area than if the person was in the open. The tank is putting its lower half behind cover which makes the target harder to hit, needing a more accurate shot and thus forcing the other tank to move towards the buryied one.
@@stevencolor3389 Well the difficulty with hiding a tank half way into the ground or a person talking cover where only their head is showing is ranging is more difficult. Some scopes and I believe the tiger tanks sight both have ways of finding out range by just looking at their target. Sights against humans use their chest, I assume the tiger's sight uses the hull of the tank, now that neither of these are not visible they will just have to guess the range of objects around the target. Then after taking ranging shots you'll eventually hit the target. I'm not saying cover is ineffective I'm just saying with time or luck or skill you could still kill a t34 or human in cover.
@@lordbluebaron2270none of which makes the tigers gun any more accurate.
So the buried turret is a lot harder to hit than a full tankm
Since when a regular T-34 could penetrate a Tiger frontal armor unless it's a T-34/85(which could only penetrate it up to 900-1,000m if Tiger hull is not angled and if it's a perfect 90 degree shot)?
Discontinued tanks from WOII were digged jn during the cold war too. An example is the IJsellinie in the Netherlands. There are a few dozen remaining between Deventer (where thr classic a bridge too far was shot) and Zwolle. Im sure other countries also continued to dig in discontinued tanks.
Switzerland had a whole bunch of centurion bunkers as well.
Cause the cent stopped being an adequate tank in the 60s while the gun was adequate till the 80s

I always thought that they remove the turrets turn them into defense emplacements.
Thanks to this i now know that they literally buried entire tanks into the ground.
Except the panther turrets.
@@rickmoreno6858 Yeah, considerably the Panther emplacements were just Extra turrets that didn't have a hull to go on unlike the french defensive turrets which buried the whole tank with hull and all of course engines and so on removed.
I always assumed it was a camping spot, with the tank still being able to get out and move.
Suppose it means that they become basically small bunkers that a few people can be in, either hiding from airraids and artillery or make moving rounds about easier, or even have one on the gun and one sleeping arrangement
@@unseenufo Every side would sometimes dig pits for the tanks to roll into and they could also roll out, the effect was similar but obviously not permanent.
You know your tank design is so complicated that the turret production is greater than the chassis production.
Don’t forget that hundreds of subcontractors were involved in producing parts, all while Allied bombers hit factories and transport links and production facilities were being lost to Allied advances on the ground. Not surprising that production didn’t always go entirely to plan.
