Ah, cool to see the explanation and evolution of this piece of kit. A relatively new video game in early access called Beyond The Wire features these shields for the Recon Detachment leader (Recon Detachment being a two man sniper team). Fortunately, one doesn't feel that big weight on the back, and it ends up being a nice little piece of mobile cover for certain situations. Not as needed in the Argonne Forest, but certainly a nice item to have while setting up a firing position at the edge of a shell crater in no man's land.
Can you guys please make a video on the penobscot expedition? It was the second biggest maritime disaster in us navy history. And few know about it, it’s an interesting topic, and it would be great to see a video about it!
I think the name is a bit misleading, these were not used by snipers they were used by infantry soldiers mostly in trench warfare. They were not easy to transport but saved countless soldiers lives until weaponry was adapted to defeat it. Every defensive tool used in war is eventually defeated by advancing offensive weapons, that is why war technology gets more advanced in every war fought.
Good info. One slight clarification though; backwards facing bullets don't have more penetration capability than forward facing bullets. Pointed bullets will have better penetration and the back of a bullet is flat so the flat part will never penetrate further than the pointy side. Cap And Ball RUclips channel has a video on Mannlicher M95 rifles and backwards bullets.
Robert Graves mentions in his book having trouble with the earlier shields until an officer brings back his Elephant gun after being on leave. They put one sniper out of action and are surprised when someone carries on using the shield so put them down as well. He also mentions looking through a small periscope (approx 25mm square) over the parapet when a German sniper puts a bullet through the centre from about 100yrds

On paper, a soldier could remove their body armor and use the plates to form a modern shield at little additional weight (just something to act as a frame). In practice, I don't actually know the armor practices of snipers and I also imagine their would be some resistance to stopping so you can remove your armor and use it to build a fort.
Maybe a way to increase the effectiveness is to simply have it so that the sniper shield deflects the bullet somehow? Maybe have an elongated pyramid? Then again, that wouldn't do much to help the weight situation.
I think, this would be more effective, if they would angle those shield, so they could reduce its mass by not using so much material (but I think, that in WW1, they didn't know about angling).
Steel is not only composed of iron and carbon - you have thousands of diffrent alloys. In this case the alloy contains also a significant amount of magnesium added to affect its properties.
