Eventually it was realized that shield just tended to draw artillery fire. Thus later on decoy shield would be set up to try and bait enemy snipers or machine gunners into giving away their position by firing at the shield.

WHY WOULD A SNIPER NEED A SHIELD.
Wouldn't this make about a billion times more sense being standard issue to all riflemen? Not snipers, the ones who need it the absolute least.

@@anyoneanywhere8212 "Wouldn't this make about a billion times more sense being standard issue to all riflemen?" Except that your standard rifleman isn't skilled enough to take out targets at long range, not to mention that there's no way you can make this standard issue without clogging up the trenches (where are you going to store millions of them? how will you deploy them en masse? they're heavy and cumbersome) and then there is this "small issue" that there's no way you can manufacture 5-6 million shields of high quality steel. Where are you going to get all that steel? How much will it cost? It's obvious this will *never* be standard issue.
You're not thinking very far are you?
"Not snipers, the ones who need it the absolute least." Well, in WWI *they* were the ones firing at people they spotted for a short, fleeing moment in the enemy trench. In order to maximize the chance of a one shot/one kill you need somebody very accurate with their aim. A sniper. There's however some nasty drawback of being a sniper. You have to remain in your position for a long time until you spot something to fire at. This means that *enemy snipers* can spot you or lookouts with periscope binoculars. In WWI there was this nasty drawback that there was rarely any other position than your trench to fire from so you couldn't just move around at will and switch position like regular snipers hiding in buildings in cities, forests or mountains. Snipers need to lay still and wait for a target to expose themselves. That means that they themselves are *unprotected* since they're exposed. In WWI exposing yourself by going over the trench would increase the chance you'd get spotted and shot. *This is why these sniper shields were developed in the first place* .
"Wouldn't this make about a billion times more sense" Word of advice, *leave the thinking to others* it's clearly not your forte. You're either a kid or somebody utterly ignorant to the realities of real life outside your own sheltered reality of games.
Don't think. Let others do that for you. What makes "sense" to you is so bizarre I don't even know if you're for real or just making a stupid joke.
Nothing is more tragic than some cretin trying to come up with a "sensible idea".

It’s amazing that for all the technological advances in the First World War, machine guns, tanks and aircraft, both sides reached back into the past for inspiration. Both the German and British helmets were inspired by medieval designs, medieval maces that would make knights proud made a come back and now sniper shields inspired by medieval archer shields

Absolutely love the features, no disrespect, but I've been retired, for quite a few years know, I had to dig my old Zeus book out, so the 1916-1917 model, thickness was, •42" = 27/64", just under7/16", or 10•7--11•1mm wow. Big jump on the original thickness of, •23"=15/64", just under 1/4", or 5•9--6•3mm. Carrying these shields in the thick mud, then getting them up the muddy, home made, wooden ladders, 3mt--10ft up, to get them to the top of the trench, just to set them up, bullets whizzing past, and during all this, trying to keep the shield and your sniper rifle clean. Then after all of that effort, BE A SNIPER, I cannot even imagine it, on either side. Reversed bullets didn't penetrate at all but simply transmit all of their energy into the shield without penetration, which made flakes of steel chip away on the other side. It would've been rather uncomfortable to get hit by those tiny pieces of steel and it made the marksman leave his position for sure.

Ah, cool to see the explanation and evolution of this piece of kit. A relatively new video game in early access called Beyond The Wire features these shields for the Recon Detachment leader (Recon Detachment being a two man sniper team). Fortunately, one doesn't feel that big weight on the back, and it ends up being a nice little piece of mobile cover for certain situations.
Not as needed in the Argonne Forest, but certainly a nice item to have while setting up a firing position at the edge of a shell crater in no man's land.

I think the name is a bit misleading, these were not used by snipers they were used by infantry soldiers mostly in trench warfare. They were not easy to transport but saved countless soldiers lives until weaponry was adapted to defeat it. Every defensive tool used in war is eventually defeated by advancing offensive weapons, that is why war technology gets more advanced in every war fought.

Good info. One slight clarification though; backwards facing bullets don't have more penetration capability than forward facing bullets. Pointed bullets will have better penetration and the back of a bullet is flat so the flat part will never penetrate further than the pointy side. Cap And Ball RUclips channel has a video on Mannlicher M95 rifles and backwards bullets.

Robert Graves mentions in his book having trouble with the earlier shields until an officer brings back his Elephant gun after being on leave.
They put one sniper out of action and are surprised when someone carries on using the shield so put them down as well.
He also mentions looking through a small periscope (approx 25mm square) over the parapet when a German sniper puts a bullet through the centre from about 100yrds

They don't necessarily need that much height, so you could take the 18" tall model and set it on a 60 degree slope. Many more bullets would be deflected with very little penetration, even with armor piercing rounds. Light weight but still effective.

because, unlike in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, nobody understood how warfare should be conducted on a tactical level. ever-improving machine guns and artillery rendered dense line formations and cavalry charges ineffective at best and suicidal at worst, forcing everyone to come up with new concepts and ideas regarding both tactics and equipment.

On paper, a soldier could remove their body armor and use the plates to form a modern shield at little additional weight (just something to act as a frame).
In practice, I don't actually know the armor practices of snipers and I also imagine their would be some resistance to stopping so you can remove your armor and use it to build a fort.
