  • When repairing your Hypalon®, PVC or urethane inflatable, or your plastic or composite kayak, it's vital that you choose the right adhesive and solvent for the job. Using the wrong materials will result in a poor repair and wasted effort. In this video, Josh from NRS Repairs shares an inflatable repair adhesives guide to help you understand when to use such glues as Clifton Hypalon, Shore, Stabond, Clifton Urethane, Vynabond and G/flex Epoxy. Solvents for repair prep are important too; you'll also learn when you can use toluene, MEK, acetone and alcohol.

    Thanks you for the comment/question. It appears that Zodiac may have used a few different fabrics over the years, so you'd have to get a hold of the manufacturer if you wanted to know the exact type of material your boat is made of. That said, we suggest using Stabond Adhesive for any air holding patches on Zodiacs. Stabond works on many different fabric types, and for this reason we list it as the preferred adhesive for Zodiac boats.

    Thank you for the comment. Sounds like G/flex Epoxy or Stabond Adhesive (or other) should work great. If it's more of a fabric to fabric type of a repair, then I'd suggest Stabond or the appropriate glue for the fabric your boat is made of (check out our "How To: Inflatable Repair Adhesives Guide" video and "Inflatable Boat Material & Valve Reference Chart").

    If it will be a fabric to solid surface repair that wont flex a lot, then G/flex Epoxy would be the better option. See the next comment down for additional details.

    Great videos! Thanks! I have a larger area of scrim shot from a hack job of removing a handle from a PVC dinghy. The area is the exact area where I need to attach a Weaver Davit pad. Would Aquaseal be ok in this instance? Strong enough to attach the pad on top? Also, is it correct that I'd need two different adhesives to attach the pads to a PVC boat. Any help is very much appreciated. Again, thanks for the great vids. Very helpful!

    If it's the interface between the transom and the boat fabric i.e. the fabric and the transom board are separating from each other, then we would suggest using G-flex epoxy. G-flex works for a myriad of fabric and materials, so it should work great with whatever your transom is made of. Stabond could work as well but you'll probably get a better bond with G-flex. The following videos on our website/RUclips page can help with the repair process:

    Thank you for your comment. Zodiac used a variety of fabrics over the years. For this reason we suggest using Stabond Adhesive (sold at nrsweb.com) for air holding patches. Stabond works on a variety of fabric types, so it should work no matter what fabric your boat is made out of. Note, properly preparing the fabric and boat material for glue is key. If the boat and/or patch are not cleaned and prepared properly, then the patch will not stay on the boat very long.
    Thank you for your comment.

    Stan's Tubless Tire Sealant works great. Its sold at most bicycle shops. Its a liquid latex. You just pour it in each chamber. Fill it up with air. rotate the boat every 10 min for an hour then let sit for 24 hours. Done. Seals all those small leaks you can't find and the ones you can find. And it's cheaper than buying the same product at westmarine

    Always store all paints and canned adhesives upside down if not being used for a long time. The material will self seal in any microscopic leaks in the lid creating a air tight seal. Be aware of any initial leaks that may come out of the lid. I've kept paints good over 10 years doing this. PS lose the music!

    I'm about to try and repair an inflatable Sevylor kayak I bought. I have some G-Flex laying around and have been impressed with it so I'm planning on trying to patch it with that as the adhesive.The tear is on the very bottom of the yak and the PVC material down there looks to be no thicker than what you might find on a cheap pool float. I'm concerned that the material is way too thin for even light sanding, would you agree? Also, I see y'all have your boat inflated during the repair, I would have thought that having it inflated during what should be the adhesive clamping stage would weaken the bond. Is there some benefit to having it inflated during the repair or did y'all just do it that way because it was easier to film? Great video, super informative and thorough, you don't see that often on RUclips tutorials.! And yes, know I should just throw this cheap inflatable yak away but giving up's not really my style.

    • @zzz7zzz9
      @zzz7zzz9 7 лет назад

      pretty sure they were using a perfectly fine boat just to demonstrate the procedures. he should have pointed that out though. one also doesn't want to inflate their boat too soon after applying any patches/repairs. wait at least the recommended full cure time, or more if possible. i was packed for a trip, and scraped my boat while loading and the scrape made a small hole. had to unload, and do a rushed patch-job in the dark. wasn't cancelling my fishing trip. left in the morning, and inflated boat at the lake. got only half a day's fishing in when i noticed a bubble slowly forming under the patch, and over time, it slowly grew larger, working it's way closer to the edge of the patch. had to cut the trip short and book it back to camp before it let loose, and it did.

    Could be Polyurethane, PVC or another type of fabric. I'm unfamiliar with Probond, so I can't really give an educated suggestion with regards to that glue. It could work great, or it might stick for a while and then peel off. If you know for sure what type of fabric your boat is made of, then we would suggest using a glue for that specific type of fabric over Stabond. However, if you are unsure of the fabric type, then Stabond is the way to go as it bonds well to nearly all types of boat fabric.

    Most likely you'll still be able to repair the boat, it will be a bit of work, but you should still be able to patch it. Hello Wade, The best glue for a repair like this is G-Flex epoxy. It's great for gluing boat fabric to wood. If the tubes are leaking any air you will want to make sure these leaks are fixed before gluing the transom back into place.

    One a final note, the most important step of any patch or repair job is preparation. Be sure to take the time to prepare the patch and repair area thoroughly. If these areas are not prepped and cleaned properly your patch won't last very long. It may stick for a short time, but will probably peeling off at an inopportune time down the line.

  • @NRSWEB

    Great question, MEK does affect the material more than acetone, it softens the material so that it will more readily accept the adhesive. Acetone on the other hand mostly just cleans the fabric's surface. You don't have to use MEK, but if you do, you'll get a stronger bond when using the appropriate glue. Thank you for the question/comment.

    • @NRSWEB

      An internal sealant is an option but should be considered a last resort. We sell Flexseal (www.nrs.com/product/1989/raft-sealant-kit) at NRS that can be used on both Hypalon and PVC boats. Your best option is to do more investigating and find the leaks. Make sure to check around the valves. Valves are the cause of leaks more often than not. Most paddle boards are PVC so any of the inflatable PVC adhesives should work. Getting glue in Puerto Rico can be challenging. Shipping flammable adhesives is cost prohibitive. Your best option is to contact local marine supply shops. Many sail boats have PVC dinghies and these places often carry repair materials. Good luck with the repair!

    Today I had to cut open Patina’s tummy to remove her squeaker, as it fell inside of her when someone pushed her too hard. I just cut a little slit in her belly and managed to get the squeaker back in its proper spot, but now she won’t squeak properly, as the slit (I’m guessing?) needs to be sealed somehow.

    Question...I've got a pretty large hole in our inflatable 3 ringed pool that is our only hope for cooling down summer time, and I can't afford to buy another one, I know they're like 40$ but I don't have 40$. The hole is in the corner of pool and is on a seem that is connected to the other ring below it, causing second ring only a slow leak...there is a second flap of vinyl on the inside of the main hole ring that I've struggled with figuring out how to position it for repairing the hole under that flap. So this us the part that makes what I'm doing sort of interesting, I had same pool but that got too many holed in it and got a replacement, turned old one into a giant slip and slide which is awesome, so I have tons of the exact same pool vinyl I can use for this hole repair on corner seem. Unfortunately, I threw away the corners of other one cus it didn't lay flat for the slip and slide, other wise ide be trying to figure out how to basically replace the whole corner of the pool and seal the seams with some sort of plastic welding hot iron or heat sealer for vinyl which ive done before and its sort of fun to make your own inflatables. But I don't have a corner rounded piece... what sort of vinyl glue adhesive works best for this sort of repair,

    • @NRSWEB

      Hi +Maurice Dun, the solvent you use will depend on the material of your boat. If the boat is made of Hypalon/Pennel Orca we recomend using Toluol-toluene (www.nrs.com/product/1920/toluol-toluene) for glue removal. If your boat is PVC based than MEK (www.nrs.com/product/1912/mek-pvc-solvent) should do the trick. Please give us a call at 877-677-4327 or email us service@nrs.com if you have any more questions.

    What is the ratio of glue to accelerate? Is the same glue used for the thinner seam fabric?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  3 года назад

      Hello Anne, The ratio is different depending on the specific adhesive. If you purchased the glue from NRS we provide that information on our website. To answer your other question yes, the same adhesive is used on seam fabric.

    Is there a product available that would allow me to just paint it on the bottom of the pool instead of patching pin holes one by one? I feel like if I could just cover/ paint the bottom with something I could repair the whole thing at once. Thank you for any advice

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  4 года назад +1

      Sounds like you patching an above ground pool. There might be a few differences between what you have and an inflatable boat. But your first step is going to be determining the material. Most likely its some kind of vinyl. There are some paint on options out there but they can get a little expensive and NRS doesn't stock any. If Aquaseal will stick to your fabric and you can see the holes that might be your most cost effective option.

      @@NRSWEB thank you for answering! I somewhat have patched the holes but it's still leaking and yes it is an above ground vinyl pool.

    • @NRSWEB

      Hi Starwin, Stabond works on PVC and should work on the Intex material but you should contact Intex to make sure. You'll probably want to source your patching material direct from Intex if possible.

    Can i use pvc pipe glue and primer on a pvc raft

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  5 лет назад

      Hi Snark, PVC pipe cement will not work for repairing a raft. You might get a patch to stick but it will mostly leak as soon as you add air. If you want some help picking out the materials for your repair feel free to give us a call at 877-677-4327 and we can help you out.

    what about a right glue for a Plastic or a Poly none inflatable kiddie / wading pool?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the question +Lady_Lone_ Wolf. If you're not sure what material the pool is made of, a versatile adhesive like Aquaseal or Stabond for the application is recommended. Both these adhesives will bond to a number of different materials (i.e. hypalon, nylon, vinyl (PVC), and many plastics). If you have any other questions about choosing the right adhesive please reply to this comment, give us a call (877-677-4327), or send us an email (service@nrs.com). Thanks again!

    Hi, is it possible to fix a two inch hole that goes completely through the kayak. A mouse got in the basement, ate a hole in the corner of my inflatable kayak right through to the other side. He got the worse possible spot. Right in the corner so he basically created a hole and connected the air supply that was separated from the sides of the boat to the floor. Is this a lost project?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  8 лет назад

      Thanks for reaching out to us Rick. Sorry to hear about the trouble with that mouse. In order to give you an accurate assessment of your repair options please email us at service@nrs.com with a description of the problem and a few pictures or a video of the hole. Our repair experts will be happy to help you out. Thanks and have a great day!

      find that mouse, skin the little bugger, stretch that hide out to it's max, lather in proper adhesive, and cover hole with it. this will also serve as a warning to future rodent problems.

    why we need more than 1 layer for the glue ( vinyl cement for inflatable boat

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  3 года назад +1

      Good question. When you use glue on wood, paper, and other porous materials the glue flows into tiny openings and after it dries the glue has formed into and irregular shape that locks the two pieces together. When gluing PVC or Hypalon the solvents in the glue are slightly melting the material to allow the chemical bond to form. The solvents only do their job while they're wet. You apply several coats to insure the solvents have been able to thoroughly do their job.
