- This visualization shows the sales performance of each PlayStation console starting from the original PlayStation up to August 2020. I sped up the first few years up as not to bore you. Although PSP performed really well and PS Vita was an excellent update it competed directly with smartphones which were becoming faster and more capable every year. The target market for the PS Vita could only afford either a smartphone or handheld console, so the smartphone won every time. PlayStation 2 was a massive hit and set their turf before the launch of Xbox.

Remember that PS2 was a DVD player when the technology was brand new. Millions of japanese households purchased one solely to play DVDs, and many gamers were also won over for that feature. Also beating nintendo and microsoft to the punch, the system launch was phenomenal

I still have the Original PS2 with a repaired disk drive since it broke once when I had it. and its still works
I spent €365 on the ps2 in 2001 after Christmas. It was my first major purchase with euros. I bought it because it was the first affordable DVD player.
The gaming market is much bigger now but PS2 is still on top, thats how popular it was
I mean, it was the cheapest thing on the market with a dvd player for a long time. So that really helped it.
The PS2 didn’t really have much competition either unlike the PS3 and PS4

Thang Nguyen they didn’t sell nearly as well as the PS2 did, it dominated the market, whereas today the PS4, Xbox 1 and Nintendo switch are all popular.

My brother got his PlayStation 2 in 2001 and I still have it and play a couple games on it almost daily to this day. It works amazingly and I’m definitely impressed. Truly a timeless console.

Correction, they did supported it just people didn't buy cause on top of the hand held you had to buy those expensive memory cards, which drove people to not adopt the vita which led sony to not support it, sony doesn't just kill their electronics for no reason, they kill them if people don't support it, so in a way consumers have a bit of fault, games like killzone, persona 4, uncharted golden abbys Resistance and other first part games are a good indication that Sony did support it.

Yes. It had backwards compatibility too and that's what should every console have. Let's say you have Minecraft on PS 3 and you buy PS 4, now you have to buy Minecraft for ps 4 again. I know, with some games the graphics would be lower but that's not huge problem. This is where Xbox wins

Ps2 for me is the greatest gift I ever received even tho it's already used by my cousins, I still remember how happy was I at that moment compared to when I bought a PlayStation 3&4, xbox. It wasn't just as happy as I received the ps2.

I remember when I used to play with my ps2 slim... the old days...
2020 I sold my ps2 slim and bought 2 ps2 fat with hdd adapter, ps3 slim, ps vita slim and playstation classic. Now I have Ps4 pro, original backwards compatibility ps3, ps3 slim, 2 ps2 fat, playstation classic, psp 3000, psvita oled and ps vita slim. Now I need the PS5 pro.

One of the reasons PlayStation 2 sold well is because it had dual joysticks and they are good to use. No other controllers had such good joysticks then (The N64 controller had a joystick, but it’s design is a bit weird).

PlayStation 5 was released on November 12th, 2020. Many children love PlayStation 5 in 2020 late to 2023 (present).
EDITED: I remember I played PlayStation 2 in 2015-2018 and PlayStation 4 in 2018-2019. Today in 2023 I do never play PlayStation games. I know it's still a legend. Thank you for making my childhood. Respect.

The ps vita was an excellent console from a design point of view. it just never had loads of classic games for It. why was classic doom not on it? God!
Because of that it's cheap and easy to hack with lot of homebrews/emulators
