  • Sky News Investigations Reporter Jonathan Lea says SIM swapping in the world of scams is among the "most sinister" and the "most dangerous”.
Mr Lea said however it is not the case that SIM swapping is “more prevalent”
“With other scams, you might sign away sums of money,” Mr Lea said.
“This you can lose your entire family fortune in effect over the course of a weekend and not actually know that’s it happening to you.”
In this exclusive story, the Sky News Investigations Reporter speaks to a hacker in prison, who reveals how criminals find their targets.
He also meets victims who've lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

We’ve been constantly told 2FA keeps us safe. Apparently, not so.

It's a line of defence; 2FA will keep you protected from, say, a phishing scam if you happen to fall for it.
However it could be a different story if that phishing attack is more targeted (spear phishing attack) and mixed in with some social engineering of your phone company to swap your SIM....

@dexterrity It seems that cybercriminals are too sophisticated and numerous for us to safely use the internet. It may be time to start rethinking our reliance on it.

@@susanc4622 Your last point could apply to many of the large scale fragile systems that society relies on yet takes for granted: reliable sourcing and distribution of power, water, food, medicines, etc.
I guess what I'm saying is these "tech" problems aren't really new or about the tech and have existed probably since societies have. The evolving technology changes the face and scale of these problems, but their nature remains.
To be more specific: internet security is an old problem of "how do we keep our valuables secure from bad people".

@@dexterrity But the bad people weren’t on the other side of the globe and just had to set up a program that could reach 40k people. Times have changed.

Ironic that he suggests biometrics which support other very sinister systems and are not foolproof either. He also suggests using yahoo and gmail; which are probably two of the most insecure mail systems out there and are constantly hacked into. Just kind of strange.

Google? What are you on? The last CVE found on Google Authenticator was 2013 and is patched. Go educate your small sized brain media lover 😂

In regional areas you see sos on a regular basis because the service is so crap.
More technology at this point means more ways to get ripped off.
Wonder why people want to keep cash? I would like to see one of those wormy assed scammers get cash out of me.

It should be easier to hold telcos and banks accountable and get compensated. Things would improve very quickly if this were the case. Processes and procedures that allow this to happen would change overnight.

Keep your crypto on a hard (cold) wallet and only transact on the TOR network. Not even Govt can spy on your crypto if you keep it off the Web and outside the banking system.
