      The dumbest part about this decision from the council, is that the Asari knew all along. Through i believe the VI Vendetta, in the beacon incased within the statue of Athame, they had been leeching Prothean secrets for millennia, and i have no doubt in my mind that at least one Asari came across knowledge of the Reapers drom said beacon.

    To my mind the scariest thing about the Reapers is their competence and consistency. I worked it out once that if they have been reaping once every 50,000 years and had been doing so for a minimum of 37,000,000 years (how long the derelict reaper had been there) then they have harvested the galaxy about 7,000 times. Not once were they defeated. Not a single species targeted for harvesting survived. It is reasonable to assume that in each of those 7000 cycles the races of the milky way would have tried everything they could think of to either defeat the reapers or at least survive them. It appears nothing worked. If you were race 7000 it would appear hopeless, since anything you can think of has probably been tried before - possibly multiple times - and failed. A feeling of total futility and hopelessness would likely follow.

    Here’s a fact about the Reapers: Due to the Protheon's biology, the Reapers were unable to convert the Protheon Biomass (in which they had enough for one) due to to the bio part of the biomechanical being refusing to sync with its metal systems (containing the actual Reaper Intelligence). Thus this forced the Reapers to go with plan B where they take a giant portion of Indoctrinated Protheons and cyberneticly enhance them/genetic alter them over multiple generations to the point where they finally became the Collectors.

    The hibernation is actually a choice of the Reapers, as they're just to efficient for life to grow without them hibernating. And considering they hibernate in an unknown location in dark space, aka the massive void between galaxies, they basically can't be found. The Crucible on the other hand, while a weakness of the Reapers, is actually designed by their enemies specifically to destroy the Reapers. Counting it as a weakness would be like counting an artificial disease that would kill all humans as a weakness for humanity.

    @monkeydude952 3 года назад +32

    My reasoning for them has always been that the Reapers don't actually know what their purpose is and act in the interest of their own race. The Catalyst is a supreme intelligence that governs Reaper activity. But every discussion with the Reapers shows they also have individual intelligence. Sovereign seems to express only contempt for organic life, viewing it as pathetic, and he views himself as an exterminator, although he is ultimately indifferent to the pain and suffering of organics, seeing it as a means to an end.
    Harbinger on the other hand is massively egotistical and has a twisted kind of hero complex. Harbinger's goals are probably the most closely aligned with the The Catalyst's, he sees it as a means of uplifting organics to a heightened state of being. He also goes completely apeshit if someone competent gets in the way of his plans, he possesses the bodies of Collectors in order to stalk and throw shade on Shepard, and seems to enjoy the suffering he inflicts.
    The Rannoch Reaper is just a little bitch and does whatever Harbinger tells him to.
    The Tuchanka Reaper didn't speak and he got eaten by a big worm so his opinion wouldn't matter anyway.

      All we saw was a few reapers personalities. There's thousands more. If they were doing it for themselves, why would they go sit in dark space "hibernating" for 50,000 years instead of, oh I don't know, building some kind of massive civilization or SOMETHING you'd think a species would do if they were concerned about their own well being.
      No, they did what they did because they were following what they thought was their programming.

    It succeeded this time because of the work done by the Protheans. According to Javik, the Reaper-Prothean war lasted for centuries so it can be assumed the Protheans have resources hundreds of times greater than the Council species. The sabotage of the Citadel Keepers and backdoor installed by the Protheans is what made coordinated defense possible. Then there is the archive left by them. It is possible the design for the Crucible was lost for million of years and were recovered by Protheans during the centuries of war.

  • @Aotearas
    @Aotearas 5 лет назад +12

    Two clarifications:
    -The Mass Relay network not also guides evolving species along a mostly predetermined path of expansion and technology, it's also offering the lazy option of not needing to develop any advanced forms of FTL travel capacities beyond the usual Mass Effect/Element Zero (which is Reaper technology) for what's essential local transitions with any longrange travel being done via the Relay network. Something that was omitted when talking about the Citadel is that the Reapers can also disable the Relay network as they desire once they have control over the Citadel, effectively cutting any spacefaring civilization into small portions of localized systems or a star cluster at best that is far easier to methodically *process* one after another with their victims not having the technology required to bridge the distances between colonies, etc. to mount anything resembling an effective defense, ensuring MASSIVE localized numbers advantage for the Reapers in addition to their individual formidability. Sabotaging that part of the Reapers' strategy was the only thing that enabled the galaxy's civilizations to even have something resembling of a fight against the Reapers and even then with all those civilizations' military and industrial capacity they were still being beaten bloody and required to hedge their bets on a Hail Mary with the Crucible (though that's really just bad writing imho, in a conventional war the industrial might of the collective Milky Way civilizations should edge out over the ultimately finite numbers of the Reapers eventually if it weren't for plot-armour).
    -Secondly (and this plays into the first point about railroading civilizations to not requiring any true long distance FTL travel capacities), hibernation isn't nearly as flawed for the Reapers as the point may appear to be. The vast majority of Reaper forces will hibernate in the void well outside the Milky Way galaxy, far beyond the reach of anything at the techlevel Reapers start their cycle of harvesting (for reference, it took the Reapers two and a half years using their conventional FTL to pass the distance from dark space, if we take that number and multiply it by 219 (the factor of performance superiourity over human FTL performance) it would take a human fleet nearly 550 years of FTL travel to reach the Reapers where they hibernate (and that's assuming they'd know where to go to in the first place!). The only Reaper in "realistical" danger during hibernation would be the scout left behind who periodically checks how the galaxy is repopulating and those tend to be very considerably more aware of their surroundings given the nature of their mission (it's logical to assume that only large periods of the first millenias are spent hibernating as they've just literally bombed an entire galaxy back to the stone age and nothing could possibly pose a threat until much, much later when surveillance most probably takes on a bit more active nature than just waking up every thousand years and doing a quick Google search).
    Also, the Mass Effect 3 ending is still a lazy cop-out from writers who wrote themselves into a corner. Ye, still salty on how they blew themselves a load into their feet after they let Mac Walters and his fetish for all things Cerberus do much of the story writing in ME2 and Drew Karpyshyn left BioWare entirely after ME2 (note how Cerberus went from a chain of small side quests in ME1 to basically *THE* big player in ME2 and 3). I hear that hack Walters couldn't even resist adding some Cerberus into that cavalcade of f*ck-uppery that Andromeda turned out to be (real glad I never wasted any time or money on that steaming pile of "my face is tired").
    Urgh, nostalgic rant over.

Though I was disappointed that the reapers didn’t all have unique designs in me3 like they did at the end of me2 I was prepared to forgive that since I was so immersed in the world of mass effect. Then we have the god child who turns the reapers from emotionless monsters looking out for their own interests into fluffy teddy bears who want to preserve everyone. They also go from being “each a nation, independent” to being controlled by an entity who doesn’t show up until the last 5 minutes of the entire trilogy and is only poorly alluded to once in the entire trilogy. I’m sorry bringing for this up but you can’t talk about the reapers without mentioning the contradictory godchild

    Their reliance on the Citadel without a backup system in place is a weakness. The fact they rely on a plan that requires their enemies take specific actions is a weakness.
    Suppose the 2nd species to get FTL is particularly hostile to the 1st. They would see the Citadel as a target to be destroyed rather than a asset to be colonized. If they succeed in destroying it, the Reapers are stuck hibernating in Dark Space.

      Liara leaves the plans in a time capsule for the next cycle to find if they fail themselves.
      It's entirely possible that the Protheans finished The Crucible but didn't manage to get to The Citadel with it. And that the Inusannon finished it but refused to make the destroy/control/meld choice and died trying to win a conventional victory, like Shepard can do too.

      I'm surprised they didn't include the ability to assume control over Husks/Collectors/species counterparts. One of the Mass Effect 3 even references that doing it is the main reason Sovereign failed: "Sovereign was destroyed while assuming direct control over Saren. The feedback from Saren's death seemed to entirely overload Sovereign's shields." Even though I wish certain Collector/Husk based enemies from Mass Effect 2 had carried over into Mass Effect 3 (apart from the Praetorians, they can fuck off), I'm glad that they didn't include Harbinger enemies if for no other reason than in universe consistency because if Priority: Earth had Reapers "Assuming Direct Control!" over enemies as often as Harbinger did during the Collector Base mission (seriously, in certain areas, he does it every 3 seconds, it's hilarious how fast Shepard can down him with Adrenaline Rush as a Soldier) then Sword and Shield Fleets would have had a much easier time in orbit and Shepard may not have been injured on the approach to the beam.
      Also thank god that Husks don't carry Blackstars like American Ben said, that would make all the Reaper levels in Mass Effect 3 fucking terrifying to play.

    The asari were terrible. First they leeched off of the prothean beacon before any other civilization, making themselves superior to all other races, then they hid the beacon for themselves. They should have learned of the reapers from it, but even then, their leadership denied the existence of the reapers, setting back any preparation that could have been made. They were not only arrogant parasites, they were also incredibly incompetent.
    Only humanity made any form of effort to stop them from the beginning. It was Cerberus who orchestrated the attack on the collector base, as well as intense study of their technology. Their only flaw was a lack of oversight, where they could have quarantined and executed anyone who had spent too long working on reaper tech, as a means to prevent the spread of indoctrination. If they had set up an internal security division to monitor the projects of other groups, instead of relying on ONE man to connect everything, they may have been the greatest hope for all life.

    The great tragedy of the Reapers is they don’t seem to realize they’re as much slaves to the ‘cycle’ as everyone else.
    They believe themselves to be above all sentient life, but at their core they’re simply machines endlessly repeated a flawed imperative from millions of years ago. There’s no great purpose behind their genocide of entire species, they think they do it for one but they’re just repeating an endless loop of stagnation that removes the capacity for something new while creating nothing positive from their existence.
    Does that really sound like the logical thought process of a highly intelligent machine, or that of one that doesn’t understand that it’s fundamentally broken? If they ever developed the capacity to understand this about themselves, they’d probably terminate themselves as dangerous abominations.

  • @richardsmall2855
    @richardsmall2855 3 года назад +1

    Technically, the Reapers are an AI. The ships are just vessels for that intelligence. Reapers do not always show up in giant ships. They come in smaller forms as Sheppard resisted a Reaper IFF device attempting to indoctrinate him. The Husks are human sized reaper machines originally created by the Geth. These were appropriated and used by the Reapers during Mass Effect 3. One of the deleted ideas was Sheppard talking to a human sized reaper in a husk who was using it to indoctrinate scientists studying the husk. Mass Effect 2 shows us Reapers build avatars that embody the race that the reapers have destroyed. In this case, a giant human reaper. Reapers also infiltrate computer software on normal computers as seen in Mass Effect 1 and 3 with the taking of the Citadel. Finally, Andromeda shows us that the reapers attempted to and failed to spread to other galaxies.

      @@gabrielclark1425 What? No it isn't. The kiloton figure was the figure citied for a Systems Alliance Everest class dreadnaught. Unless you want to propose that a Reapers beam weapon outclasses a dreadnaughts main gun that badly (which would beg the question of how they ever killed any Reapers at all, considering the disparity), then a Reaper beam is likely below that, perhaps sub-kiloton.

    The Crucible has been build by COUNTLESS species before, not just the Protheans...
    Vendetta tells you how it's not of Prothean design, and that they only found the plans, but got sabotaged before they could finish it. And before the Cycle you play in during the Mass Effect trilogy, there was basicly no hope to ever finishing the Crucible because of the Catalyst.
    Before this cycle, the Reapers would get a hold of the Citadel in the first surprise attack, and by that point, even if a species finished the Crucible, they would still have to take what they had left, recapture the Citadel from the Reapers, dock the Crucible to the Citadel intact and then activate it! Doing any of these things in a cycle where the Reapers already had the Citadel would be next to impossible.
    The earlier cycles simply either ran out of time, ressources or got found out by the Reapers before they could both build and deploy it, and by that time it was a hopeless task anyway...
    The fact that the Prothean scientists managed to ensure that the Reapers couldn't immediatly take over the Citadel without running the risk of severely damaging or even destroying it by making them unable to access it remotely, is the only reason the current cycle had a chance.
    It's also the best explanation as to why the Reapers never attacked the Citadel in Mass Effect 3: Doing the same there as they do on random planets, against a prepared enemy, would risk the Catalyst getting damaged, and with that, put the Reapers at risk too.
    They did capture the Citadel by the end, but that was mostly due to the station being nearly deserted to prepare for the final attack against the Reapers, so it was left nearly undefended. It wasn't known at the time just how important the Citadel was, and by the time Shepard learns that the Citadel IS the Catalyst, it was already too late thaks to the Illusive Man...

    If they haven't been done already and I just somehow missed them, I'd like to see a video of the 3 types of Replicators from SG-1 and SGA.

      It's pretty easy to know. Reapers are hella weak compared to most sci-fi universes. A main weapon with only a output of 450kt? We can do 100times that today with our nukes. Even pre-covenant war humans in Halo can stomp the reapers let alone races like the necrons who would see them as literally less of a speed bump than bugs

      Halo Reach: plays in 2552
      That are over 400 years.

      @@mxn1948I think what a lot of people forget though, is all weapons in mass effect are extremely rapid fire, even the human slug firing mass effect guns on their ships, the reaper's main gun yield is misleading in that its a continuous (almost liquid) stream of 450kt hitting you, if it only glanced you it would be like getting hit once by 450kt, if it stayed on you for half a second it would be like getting hit by 450kt in a fairly tight focused area multiple times, the longer its focused on you the more damage you are taking and unlike a lot of high yield weapons of the explosive variety in other universes its all highly focused damage not dispersed damage like you would get from a nuke or other large explosive weapon, kinda like comparing HE to HEAT.
      Reapers also have a slightly smaller version of their main gun in each "leg" and seem to have very wide firing arcs on all their guns, as well as being extremely manoeuvrable.
      The lore reason behind the fast firing weapons is that mass effect shields have a harder time dealing with multiple hits in short succession than they do with single massive hits.
      Not to say I think reapers would win ship to ship compared to a lot of other Sci Fi universes, I just think people don't give them enough credit most of the time, also.... besides stupidly over the top universes like Warhammer 40k, reapers got some serious numbers advantage going on, I wrote out some calculations on a post on discord a while back cant remember them all, but conservatively me and a few others came to the conclusion that there are hundreds of thousands of their capital class ships at the very minimum, but as they don't go into a lot of detail in game lore about numbers its hard to tell, using inferred numbers needed for some of the stuff that's hinted at we concluded anywhere from 1million to 20million total large combat vessels.
      Though if you take the bare minimum if they only created a single large reaper per cycle and 4 smaller reapers to act as destroyers per cycle, that still leaves you at over 20k large reapers and 80k smaller destroyers, though we all thought the one reaper per cycle was unlikely and it was more likely to be one large reaper per major race per cycle plus hundreds of the smaller reapers per large reaper, plus all the support ships and fighters

      Uhm these numbers count the birth of christ and are not really helpfull in counting how far ahead a Sci-Fi universe is in time.
      The Mass Effect timelines events begin over 1 billion years in the past with the Leviathians rule.

    I've been thinking about the Reapers...
    They're basically using Transhumanism. Once we get advanced enough to make synthetic intelligence and possibly even bodies, what's to stop a person from making the leap and becoming a Synthetic? What makes a human 'human'? The Reapers are basically a philosophical question we must confront eventually.
    For all its flaws, Mass Effect can be quite mentally engaging when you break down its philosophical arguments.
