- Hi! I'm Rebecca from Yarn + Chai, and in this video, I'll walk you step-by-step through my crochet pattern for the Herringbone Square Basket.
This is an easy-level pattern, written in American Standard Terms. As with all Yarn + Chai videos, you can follow along with the written pattern on the left side of your screen! For this pattern I did things a little different, and instead of giving you the pattern for a specific size, I made the tutorial video so that you can follow along to make any size of basket you choose.

A BIG thank you! I am on a fixed income and this is perfect for giving aChristmas present. I put in soaps and little candles washcloths (I also made) and for another I put a smudge stick kit type of thing with crystals and incense. I was skeptical about this (not because of your great pattern , )but my ability to pull it off. And I DID. Very polished and elegant I did enclose on the little card your website . I am going to stick to you like glue! I am so thrilled.
This is my first year of not buying gifts because we are also on a fixed income now. I am making wash cloth, face scrubbies, spa headband, soap holder to wash with and pretty soap from a craft show and then a basket to put it in.

Hello Rebecca, I love your tutorials. I fell in love with the Nautical Basket but also love the square basket, so I just mixed the two together. I tried this herringbone stitch with another yarn which likes to split easy. First I tried doing it like you did but the hook was always splitting the yarn. Then I took a knitting needle to pull the middle one over which works but's a little laborious. Now I pull it up and just hold the left with my thumb while I pull the hook through the middle part. That makes sense and is much easier now. I do have plain white porcelan vases which I can cover with the square basket. Also a cheap plastic box will do to put inside. Well, in this case you should measure it exactly, but it works, and you can put a little heavier things inside. I am looking forward for your next projects.
I've made at least 8 of these baskets in various sizes for friends and family...they are wonderful

The layer folded fabric is a very clever clever genius
Idea . I am trying to plan a slim and tall laundry basket. Because the store bought hampers are Awkwardly sized and bulky which makes difficult to store. But this basket pttrn is a very practical and thought-out. It is sturdy aswell as soft/flexible enough to store/hide in tight corners E.G: behind a door, behind a dresser or headboard under a sink cabinet. and seems easy… THANK YOU SO MUCH you are a genius and you deserve more than a like, subscribe and bell-notification. In the UK our milk cartons are plastic so as an eco-friendly, (recycled option) you could probably use a milk carton cut to size. Depending how big yoyr basket is. I have an issue with plastic. Re-using is less of a problem!

Could you make this basket taller and wider or do you think it would lose it’s shape? And if you think it would work would you use the same yarn or something stiffer to hold the shape? I have been searching for a crochet pattern for a basket for my laundry room and I love this pattern so that’s why I had to ask...tfs!
Sure! You'll just need to reinforce it with as much plastic canvas as you need to make it as sturdy as you want. :)

If you want to put it in the washer, you should remove the plastic canvas and wash according to the instructions on the yarn.

Just depends on how wide and long you want it. You'll just have to play with it until you have a rectangle the size you want :)

I would like to know what type of yarn you used or I should use? Because when I made mine it doesn't stay up but I did everything else like you did. And turned out well
I used Bernat Maker Home Dec, which is hard to find these days. But that’s not what makes the basket stay up; it’s the plastic canvas that does that.

Hi....great basket....but I do have one simple question. I have some T-shirt yarn that I want to use and it's pretty colorful and I'm not sure if the herringbone stitch would even show up. Could I use the HDC or SC stitch and get the same effect.... thank you very much
Hi Deborah! Yes, those stitches would work fine. :)
Suggestion: in order not to waste the plastic canvas...measure the circumference of your basket and decide it by 2 to get 2 pieces that should fit without any guesswork or waste.

Thank you for sharing this. Just a general crochet question, when crocheting and any pattern and says join with a slip stitch and chain one, can you just do a seamless join instead? Its only I prefer crocheting this way x
I certainly wish! :) There would be a few reasons a designer would tell you to join. If the pattern only looks a certain way when done in turned rows, you'll have to join in order to turn. When patterns have stripes or lots of color work or stitch changes, sometimes joins are necessary to avoid a jagged color change or bunching fabric. If you see a pattern that you believe could be made seamless, it may just be that the designer didn't know how to do that technique.

On the video when you are starting to work the 3rd loop round, you said, and did, chain one before starting this round. In the directions, you didn't mention chaining one before the 3rd loop stitches. Which way is correct? Thank you so stinkin' much for your amazing website and work. You are brilliant!
Thank you for your kind words! The CH1 is written on the video version of the pattern (on screen), but I went and checked the blog post and you're right, the CH1 is missing. I added it. However, either way would have ended up fine; some people choose not to CH1 at the beginning of an SC round.

There is something called a tape measure. You could use that to measure the bottom and the sides to cut your plastic canvas instead of keep trying and cutting again and again. It'd save time.
