- Space Dandy is a dandy guy in space. Here, I dive into what made this eccentric series the best anthology in anime from the wealth of talented creators--both big-names and young, breakout stars--to the enormous variety of styles, aesthetics, and stories in each of its 26 episodes. But as acclaimed as it is, why wasn't it more of a commercial success--especially compared to its spiritual predecessor, Cowboy Bebop? Please don't forget about that dandy guy in space. Enjoy!

Personally my favorite anime of the decade. And a classic with some of the best. People just didnt get it. They wanted straight hard story. But dandy was concerned with bringing an experience. Its sad because-this anime has so much personality. Its a really special body of work
Kosse moore this guy gets it
i feel this way about a lot of anime,i think people should give a chance to this kind of anime
I get it, its just the characters are boring as hell and the animation isnt that good to carry the groundhog day events
Yeah. Tbh I kinda wanted to dislike this anime but eventually the clever writing and god-teir animation won me over.
Kosse moore I personally loved how Meow became my favorite character through his vulnerability
The greatest strength of Space Dandy’s anthology-esque extravaganza for me lies in how it is framed within an attitude of optimistic nihilism. Dandy is one of my favorite characters because of his nonchalant embracement of his own existential insignificance. Confronted with life’s meaninglessness at the edges of the universe, all he cares about is to live each day as the carefree and decadent dandy he is - just like the show itself abandons any form of narrative or stylistic cohesion in favor of unrestrained, endlessly fun spectacle. If Cowboy Bebop is about searching for answers in a culturally/stylistically/referentially diverse yet turbulent space, Space Dandy accepts that there are no answers, and that it is in the questions that the true wonders lie.
Well said. Like really well said. Thank you.
Yeah I was going to comment my opinion but this basically sums it up more than enough for me
"optimistic nihilism" is my new favorite phrase thank you
Or you could just say dandy likes boobies
Exactly
Space Dandy has some of the most hilarious comedy I have seen out of a show that is both funny with and without context.
In the words of Dandy himself,
“Who Cares, Baby!!!”
Sometimes the best shows only get popular long after they aired, but that's just how it is, baby.
Yeah I watched it the year it came out and loved how they used different directors on each episode and how weird it was just started rewatching it last week
slow and steady wins the race, baby!
I used to think all anime was basically the same, so I'd never really watch any. Then a British guy recommended Space Dandy to me and changed my life. There's an episode for everyone. That's the best part of the episodes not following a single through-line. You can show someone the episode that's best for them to get them into the rest of the show.
Watch Cowboy Bebop
I love Honey, she’s hands down my favourite space waitress.
So, there’s a scene at the end of episode 6. For context, at the beginning of the episode Dandy mentions that he wants to ride the biggest wave. At the end of the episode, QT throws him his surfboard as he and Meow escape an exploding planet on a geyser. Then, something happens.
A song starts playing in the background as the audio stops. His pompadour deforms and becomes flowing hair. Meow grabs onto the end of his surfboard and is jostled along during the ride. it pans to QT just...staring at Dandy as he drives the ship which is just 1 frame, although it feels like 100. They just sort of...fly away as the music comes to an end. There is something so simple in this scene, but I can’t help but say it is one of the best scenes in all of anime. Just to clarify, I’ve watched alot of anime, both mainstream and niche, modern and old, seasonal and movies, and yet I have seen very few scenes that on their own capture the same feeling as this scene. You’ll understand when you watch it.
Space Dandy is one of my most favourite anime of all time. I think I've rewatched it at least 5 times this year alone. It's such a good anime to put on in the background. Luckily for the UK, we have it on Netflix, but I'm not sure where else someone might be able to watch it, especially the dub. The dub is absolute perfection.
I like both versions but this is one of the few cases I like the dub better.
Adult Swim has it on their website.
Man how I missed episodic shows like this. 1 episode, 1 idea, multiple eye-opening artstyles to savior over the full-course of the show. Starting every episode feels like opening a present box, anticipating the surprise it beholds.
Space Dandy, more like Space Daddy that nurtured multiple talents under his care.
This is the best and most thoroughly researched Space Dandy video in the anime community that I've seen. "The boyz" at the top of the anicommunity (Gigguk, Joey, et al) should really being doing quality like this but aren't. They're too busy dicking around chasing the algorithm.
Which kind of touches on why Dandy never achieved the huge success it was looking for. On the surface it looks like a shonnen anime, but at it's heart it's seinen. Dandy is old enough to own his own space ship. He goes on (faux?) dates with professional women (Scarlet). He has a ex from long ago (Catherine). In other words, he's all grown up....
... which brings us to the problem. Anime and anime fans regressed in the 2010's. Moe happened. Japanese fans became more hikikomori and child like. (Hideaki Anno: "Japan is a nation of children") It became normal for western anime fans to act like overgrown children. "Trash taste" as we know it now was born. Our heroes and protagonists became children and anime fans stopped dreaming about the future and were stuck avoiding facing adulthood.
This is honestly my favourite thing Watanabe has ever produced. Yes I love it more than Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo
Space dandy hit me so hard its the best anime ive seen to date and i just love how vast and open the universe feels
Dandy forever, baby! Seriously, thank you so much for bringing more attention to it, good old pal Dandy needs more love! However, even tho I feel so sad it didn't hit globally like OPM did, but I also feel it might benefit from it simply because it stayed a unique experience not to everyone's taste.
Under the scope and super eyepatch wolf in the same day, my two favourite anime youtubers
zteevy dood same bro we have been blessed
Honestly it feels like it didn't catch fire here in the US because everyone was trying to "figure it out."
We didn't realize that the showrunners were trying to deliver on experiences back then, and even I'm guilty for that lmao.
Great video. Dandy is criminally underwatched. Ironically I think having it on Adult Swim hurt it’s reach more than it helped.
It’s shown at 2:30 a.m now, its so sad
there is so much creativity in this show. It really surprised me when I first watched it. Also although it varies in style and setting, the mood or more specific the attitude stays the same. It's the way of Dandy, baby.
I am a slave to the dandy baby.
Ooh yeah baby, let’s get going!
This was your best video yet. Also, thank you so much for covering Dandy. Criminally underrated.
Space Dandy is my favorite anime of all time. Its a masterpiece.
I love Space Dandy, probably my second favorite anime behind Cowboy Bebop. It is so unique, so funny, so entertaining. I love how it rejects so many norms, and every episode is a separate adventure. Some episodes are serious, but some are ridiculously hilarious. It also has an amazing dub. Dandy is so underrated, and so under appreciated. Hopefully its reputation changes for the better.
I remember watching the first episode... "Space Dandy... he's a dandy in space"... the theme tune played... and within that time I said to myself "I'm going to love this show!"
Very rarely does a show work so well from the very first shots. :D
One of my favorite anime of all time. I honestly like it more than Bebop
This is such a great show, the "Planet Trendy" opening by the Narrator practically slayed me, and the ending broke my heart. I wish more people would talk about this.
I love how dandy is a literal God.
Well, this re-convinced me to push this series up on my to-watch list. I was interested in the series initially, but when I looked up a review, they said it was good, but also said it had a bunch of average boob-joke humour and flat characters (at least that's what I remember taking from it), so I kind of moved it down the list. But if it's really as good as you make it out to be, I'll have to give it a go, so thanks for renewing my interest in the show :)
I've learned to ignore journalists. Especially when they act like above it all twats. "Oh boob jokes how undignified and immature, Why can't it be more like Life is Strange." Bunch of knobs
its a masterpiece.. Im sure you have seen it already but these reviews saying the series has flat humor and is all about ecchi scenes is utter bullshit
cowboy bebop is my favorite anime. samurai champloo is another fave. space dandy is another fave. basically shinichiro watanabe makes the best stuff around and i adore him and all the wonderful staff on his projects
Same
Please, don’t forget Shingo Natsume :’)
The Dandy nostalgia, baby. I wasn't expecting to randomly tear up in a video essay. For me, there is no anime that can compare to Space Dandy. It is truly unique, and tapped every style and emotion. It is easily the most creative animation I have ever seen. I was always stunned every episode, wondering how they came up with all of it. We miss you, Dandy. Maybe there's some alternate universe out there where you got the success you deserve.
I absolutely love how you started this video like Space Dandy’s first episode and finished it like the last episode.
This was really fun. Loved the intro/outro parody, loved the ships, loved the floof. Can't wait for anituber anthology 4!!
Thank you for making this video. I wish this anime did better, but I guess it wasn't for everyone. The amount of soul and personality is unrivaled in this show in so many aspects, especially in a meta context.
It was a ride not like many other.
I definitely got more emotional from a single Space Dandy episode than the entirety of Code Geass or Steins Gate
This became one of my favourites as soon as I saw the Surfing scene. That alone makes it one of the best ever in my book.
Thank you thank you thank you. Space dandy is my favorite anime and i learned alot from this video. I knew it was a collaborative effort but the names and projects they did were awesome to learn about. This was simply dandy baby
I get caught in loops of rewatching this show.
The underworld episode was crazy.
Thank you for this awesome video. Space Dandy is my absolute favorite show.
So much I didn't know about my favorite show! Thanks for the deep dive.
I have watched 100+ anime and this is in my top 5. It’s a mix of everything I enjoy and I loved it all. As soon as I heard the opening I knew I would love it. I know this may sound weird but I am genuinely sad that there won’t be anymore of dandy but I’m glad I found a masterpiece!
God damn I love that opening. Also the Game Theory reference was cute, glad you weren't using it to take potshots at him.
Fantastic video, the floof bit had me grinning from ear to ear
Great to see you talk about one of my all-time favs😭👊💯
Nies, you have momentarily returned to RUclips for a video! Awesome!
Ahh good times still sits as one of my Favourites and great video. I feel like I'm liking it more with all this information.
Keeping it Dandy Baby. Well done friend!
Space Dandy is one of the most fun shows I've ever watched. It's the show I watch again when I need a breather from watching a lot of dramatic stuff.
At 1:11 and subscribed, both a great start to a dandy video and I'll follow anyone that spreads the word of floof.
finished it, no regrets, simply a beautiful video for a beautiful series
DUDE SPACE DANDY IS MY DAMN FAVORITE ANIME OF ALL TIME HOLY SHIT
Gotta give props for trying to parody the Space Dandy intro lmao
Space Dandy getting the respect it deserves
Human creativity is just as just as infinite and beautiful as the universe
Been waiting for someone to do this series some justice.
Space Dandy, he's a dandy guy... In space. He combs the galaxy likes his pompadour on the hunt for aliens. Planet after planet, he searches for bizzare new creatures both friendly and not. These are the adventures of space dandy and his brave space crew... In space.
The video I've been waiting for all my life.
Me too. Never clicked on a video so fast.
Space Dandy is one of the best comedies of any national medium ever made. Period.
One of the best comedy animes ever made honestly, the 1st episode alone were he kills himself is hilarious.
Also at the time Cowboy Bebop was not really that popular, only to become one of the ultimate cult classics many years later.
I mean hell gundam the original show got cancelled but pretty much gunpla saved the series and has been hand to hand with the gundam series ever since then giving birth to that gundam base and that lovely 1:1 scale Gundam Unicorn.
Gimme some Dandy, gimme some floof, and I'm set.
Yeah I loved this series...with the different art styles and direction it was really different and every episode was a treat as you weren't sure what you were getting...also that death planet episode was some of the deepest stuff I've seen in anime in a long time...
To be honest dandy was a pretty fun thing to watch. Enjoyed it very much.
“No deep emotional wells” ima fight you
WHY DID THE OUTRO MUSIC MAKE ME CRYYYYY
Space Dandy is the best! Complete classic, 100%. going to just keep growing, I would love to buy me some Space Dandy stock right now 😁👏
Honestly... I enjoyed it more than Cowboy Bebop. It's unfair to compare the two tbf. But I just liked this more. It did for me so damn well.
One of the best shows imo, best comedy, best romance, etc. There's an episode for everybody and the final episode makes them ALL cannon somehow
Never shifted back to this universe. All UTS videos from here on are canonically from the antifloof jack.
I rewatch this series twice a year it's the greatest series ever made animated or not
This show holds a special place in my heart. I consider it as one of Shinichiro Watanabe’s best works. Really wish we got that movie the Prez of Bones was interested in doing, if sales were good.
Honestly, Space Dandy is still one of my most enjoyed anime series. Easily top 3. No regrets watching it as it released.
I think star wars vision got inspired by Dandy too. It works so well, you dont need one straight storyline, all of the episodes are unique.
Love this video man
I loved the references and allusions!!!
This was awesome and important, baby!
thank you for talking about my favorite anime
Can you melt obsidian and cast a sword????????????????!?!?!?
What is up with that video anyway???? It won’t leave my recommended. Is it an ad and I just didn’t notice?
Right, good philosophy of life right there.
Space Dandy is one of the most underrated masterpieces
I dropped Cowboy Bebop once, but Space Dandy has it beat, because i've dropped it trice, and counting!
Agreed. I've been saying it for years. Thank you for the vid
I just want a 3rd season.
Talentless THIS
I dropped 4 hits of acid and found this and fell in love
The dog episode like gouged my heart out
WOA...What is the anime from 3:58 from Bahi JD? That fight scene looked awesome!
The second season is one of the best seasons of anime I've ever seen. I might actually like it more than Cowboy Bebop and I haven't even finished it yet.
4:40 It should be noted in an interview back in 2013, at Otakcon 2013, the writer "Ink" interviewed Watanabe about Dandy and mentioned Space Adventure Cobra as an inspiration. This should of been a point in the video, or at least hinted at. The comparison is rather direct in a way, more so than Spike. A lot of people may overlook this, so I hope that some of you can be made aware of this fact.
anigamers.com/posts/shinichiro-watanabe-space-dandy-otakon-2013-press-conference
This show is like the love child of JJBA and Gurren Lagann
"First anime to have its english dub premiere before its broadcast version in Japan."
Look up, "Mighty Orbots" please.
This.
Another strike for uts.
He's a Dandy Guy..... In Space
Space dandy > cowboy bebop
eh no
Christian Harris yes
justgoaheadnow eh yes
Oyy very let's start a war!
In terms of pure enjoyment, I'd agree. But Cowboy Bebop is a more serious story. They're trying to do different things.
So we’re just not gonna mention samurai champloo once in this video. Not even once.
Tbh of the 3 series this director has made that being cowboy bebop, samurai champloo and space dandy I like space dandy the best. I know I am objectively wrong but I don't care, baby!
love that intro
nice to see a fellow floof connoisseur.
Space dandy...he’s a dandy guy
Episode 5 was the most emotional episode for me
I don't even like anime, and I love Space Dandy.
Saying there isn't cohesion or connections or continuity just... there is a classic character arc here where character starting a jerk and improves as a person through character interaction. It's an interesting example of that classic arc because it focuses on zen Buddhist values rather than the western ones stories with that arc usually do. Thematic threads run through the entire show. It can also be read as getting over a break-up and becoming better for it when you consider his 4th-dimensional girlfriend is likely what made him aware of his inter-dimensional selves which were central to the finale of the show. That angle accounts for all of the different styles of the show and his multiple deaths. It's a really wild show and jumps all over the place, but the only reason it is good is because they were thoughtful about carefully weaving it all together.
Spikes special brother
What are some of Yall’s fav episodes? (Apart from all of them) mine is probably S1 13. The ending is so Wholesome and emotional I love it, the music is amazing
I'm not sure of the numbers, but the dog episode, the episode with the little girl who puts Dandy in her penguin toy, and the Scarlet date episode (Losing You is one of my favourite anime songs ever)
For me it is episode 18. The aesthetic of that planet and the plot were amazing.
The Groundhog Day episode. Hilarious but at the end one of the most heart felt EPs ever.
season 2 episode 8.. the vibe did everything for me.. also the wholesome and sad ending
Now that was an intro!
Honestly I just watched this cause I thought it was called space daddy
Sucks that Dandy isn't bigger in Japan.. Such a great Anime..
