Being a Bears fan, Minnesota's lack of intensity was quite bewildering to witness in all their Super Bowl failures. They always seemed to be somewhere else, mentally... just going through the motions and playing not to lose. ...clearly a much different team than what they were during the regular season.

If the Vikings could have mustered any offense whatsoever they could have won this game. Their offense got shut out. Only Vikings points were a blocked punt by the D

I watched this game. Vikings first team to block a punt score TD in super bowl. But lost again

No one like John Facenda and the classic melodies and narratives

This was the only game that the Vikings actually could have won, but the halftime coaching by Bud Grant showed how he failed to adjust his game plan which allowed the Steelers to control the ball and win the game.

At the 1:50 mark I notice that in the endzone Vikings is spelled backwards. How did they do that?

1974 the final year the NFL playoffs rotated by division. Had the playoffs been based on record in 1974 Los Angeles would have had home field for the NFC Championship Game

What I couldn’t understand is that this video of Super Bowl IX was shown in syndication a couple of weeks before the start of the 1975 season. John Facenda mentions that Jackie Wallace “played his finest game in his short career.” I always wondered did something happen to him during preseason that he was out of football before the start of the season?

No. It was his last game with the Vikings but he played with the Colts and Rams after, through 1979. I think he meant short as in short to that point.

Cool! This is the original NFL Films documentary version from the 70's. They later recut/re-edited this one. The marching band (Grambling?) at the begining was playing the Barry White Love Unlimited Orchestra song "Can't Get enough of your Love Baby," and NFL Films would owe them royalties. The later version spliced in different opening credits; showing lunitic fans on Bourbon Street on SB eve instead of the band.

I don't know if the Vikings could have taken advantage of the play...but I believe Larry Brown lost the ball right before he hit the ground

    • @wbmstr24

despite the fact that as facenda noted the only ref with the clear front view ruled brown was down, vs two refs who's vision was blocked?

In the 70s 16-6 was considered a blowout in the Super Bowl, This was Minnesota's best chance to win it all but that Steelers defense was brutal.

do you have any more of the old super bowl highlight films?

Minnesota shouldn't have been trying to run at all. Their one good drive was when they passed but Gilliam dropped a pass on what now would be an illegal defensive play.

The one Superbowl they coulda won but let's face it when you have only 19yrds rushing & 120 total yards you don't win many big games..

This is the one Super Bowl that the Vikings could have won being only 3 pts down with 10 minutes to go.

The film in no way proves that the play wasn't a fumble. The officials closest to the play should have prevailed.

    • @daleschmieg9050

A bang-bang kind of play that could be called either way. The ground didn't force the ball to become loose, but Jackie Wallace pulling Larry Brown's arms on the way to the turf did. The ground created clear separation, but is the ball loose before he hits the ground? I am ok with either call, but it's surprising how one official overruled two on such a play as that. The two closest were obscured by the players, and the one with the better view was farther away, not seeing the ball loose, only the clear separation once he hit the ground.

  • @craigwalrath3338

Despite being dominated in yardage the Vikings were only down 9-6 when Pittsburgh fumbled and it wasn't called.

    • @wbmstr24
      @wbmstr24 3 года назад

because it wasnt a fumble as the only ref with the view correctly, as even facenda noted, made the correct call vs the two refs who had their views blocked from being on the wrong side. what part of that didnt you get?
