  • We are finally starting a new trail! Im beyond excited to begin this one because YOU get to choose how this one goes down! Thats right! As we work our way down the trail each week Ill end the video by presenting you (the viewers) with two or three options for moving forward. Then a card will pop up on the video and you guys can vote how I move forward with the build. Whatever has the highest vote by wednesday night will be what I build for that week! I think this will be pretty fun, and you guys will get to name it too! But this week I began the trail by clearing out a dense section of woods and shaping some nice flowy rollers!

Watching you (and the other Seth) has been educational. I just finished a one mile loop on my property, a combination of open pasture and dense woods, and I have two key suggestions for anyone building a backyard trail. 1) Make it wider than you think you need. At least 2 feet wide. Otherwise your bars will hit stuff or there's not enough room to adjust lines one the fly. This leads to number, 2) Features need more room than you think. To make a flowing course you need room to turn. I've had to rework multiple sections because tight turns ruined the flow. Some of them I'm stuck with, but now I know. Keep up the good work and we'll all build together! 👊

On my trail, I realized in order for me to build it and maintain it, I needed it "tractor width", about 5'. That's wider than needed of course for a bike but it sure is nice to be able to get my ATV in there for hauling wood chips or whatever, plus my tractor.

I bought a small Kubota mini excavator, and between it and my Kubota tractor and a chain saw put in a trail through a quaking aspen grove on my Idaho property. It was an insane amount of work, (lot's of big rocks)as I had nothing but slopes to work with, 147' of fall in 1/4 mile, and also thick brush, but once I started I realized I couldn't stop! I have a wood chipper for the tractor, and used all the cleared trees once they were chipped, to cover the path, it makes an excellent riding or walking surface. I have a fantasy of IF I ever sold my 40 acres, the last thing I would do is say to a prospective buyer, "let's take a walk." Totally private, and mid way down I built a small deck that bridges over the stream, just big enough for a few lawn chairs, it is so cool and private, I almost feel guilty when I see how people live in town!

Hey Seth, i just have one recommendation for the rollers, I personally have built rollers on my pump track and I noticed that your first roller fights against the ground a little bit. To increase speed and flow to fix that, either put more dirt to blend the backside of the roller with the ground, or you can dig into the ground, and blend it, also getting rid of that loamy dead spot. When you can ride over it with no chunky transition, you will double your speed and generally have a more “flow” to your trail! As for your options, I like option 2, just because to get all of your speed first at the beginning of your trail, and not being to hasty to put in jumps, don’t get me wrong I love jumps but I recommend placing them further down the trail for faster and more flowy jumps. I love option 1 but I think that jump is too soon and might interrupt the flow you are going for. Sorry for the long comment, 😂 I’m a very passionate trail builder, and I want your trails to be as fun and flowy as possible! Thanks for the uploads, it’s nice to see that you don’t need to be pro to have fun in this sport. Love your vids man! Freeride dude

I see lots of videos of trail building and the time that it takes. I have built approx 5 miles of trail on my private land. The goal to make it smooth and flowing as soon as possible. The process. 1. Mark the trail with flags or tape. 2. Walk the trail and pick up any large debris, rocks logs etc. 3. Walk the trail with a chain saw, axe, machete and clear logs, sticks, trees that need to be removed. 4. Get out the old push mower set on the highest height and mow it. Yes mow it just plow through the small brush, grass, weeds. This removes and chops up all the debris, old leaves etc. 5. Do a light raking with a leaf rake to clean up debris leftover. 6. What most people will think is crazy. Oh no it may cause erosion, make the trail muddy etc. I use a large rear tine tiller and run it on the trail. Set the depth so it is just barely tilling the top layer of soil. I go 1 way and back the opposite direction only making it as wide as the tiller. 7. Go back with a garden rake and lightly clean up the tilling. 8. You now have a well defined trail with all the small roots and weeds out of your way. 9 get a few buddies rounded up and ride it. It will pack very quickly into a trail that looks like it was there for years. 10. Add whatever features you want now. Lastly after a. Purple of good rains the trail will be amazing.

Backyard Trail Builder has been such an inspiration to me. So much so that they have inspired me to create a channel of my own. I will be dropping my first video this Friday 10am Pacific Daylight Time! Any support would be much appreciated. And thanks again Backyard Trail Builder

as cool as a berm to gap is I think you are going to want that straight at the beginning for some speed then you can think about berms and even bigger gaps :O I vote option 2!
