As a kid, I would race home daily to watch Star Blazers and obsessed over it. Now (over 30 years later) I've been watching Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and am finding it is a much better show. Not only have they updated the uniforms and made the necessary changes to update this classic, but they have added a few characters and added some plot lines that make for interesting conflicts within. They may have updated things, but the heart of the original Yamato series is very much intact. I don't mind the subtitles at all, but a faithful dubbing would be nice so I can focus on the gorgeous frames of art without focusing on reading the dialogue. I have to thank my son for getting me into this, Bebop, and Magi!!!!
It was called Argo because the powers that be thought a US audience would never accept the concept of a reborn WW2 Japanese Battleship. Those days are long past. Long live Space Battleship Yamato!

I was worried when I found out that Voyager Entertainment was in charge of developing Yamato 2199 into English. Now it's clear that my concern was justified. I was really hoping I was wrong, too. What a shame. Maybe their continued failure will result in a breach of contract, and the series will go to a studio with the resources necessary to get the job done.
Wyld staar I was hoping Funimation would get the rights to the show. They always do a great job when it comes to translating and their dubs are awesome.

The "Temporary" suspension of sales on their website has been going on since August of last year, and the suspension of sales was the last update to the site they made. They aren't even selling the original Star Blazers DVDs, which would seem to indicate they no longer have the rights to any version of Space Battleship Yamato.
I have the original Star Blazer, the Comet Empire and the Bolian empire Series on CD. I would not mind if they would update the original series to the 2199 version but keeping the original stories line. I would buy it again.
Honestly, no matter how they present it to us in the States, I'm just glad that I can view a slick remake to this 30 years after I fell in love with this as a child. The animation looks incredible and I hope they don't cut too much out of the storylines to keep the integrity of the Star Blazers version of this series.

I don't care about names. In my country, Brazil, Uchuu Senkan Yamato/ StarBlazers was called in portuguese language "Patrulha Estelar", so the overall program quality is what matters to me. In my opinion, the second season of the original series, known as "Comet Empire", was easily the best of the three ... an absolutely epic and unforgettable season! I would love to see a "Comet Empire" remake arise in Yamato 2202...

As their quest for the Cosmo DNA device was similar, it was appropriate that for such a mission of hope, the space battleship should bear the name of Jason's mythical vessel: Argo.

Because that's not the name of the ship. It was always the Yamato. Even the English dub mentioned that the ship was originally called the Yamato. Back in the 70's when anime in the US was almost non-existent, changing the name to something that didn't sound so distinctly Japanese made sense. The target audience was Star Wars fans, after all. Today, anyone under 40 is familiar enough with anime & the Japanese names that are used in them to no longer call for the name Argo to replace Yamato.
Conroy is in the new series, & plays a much larger role than before. None of the classic characters have been omitted from 2199. Even the ones with only one or two lines in the original show are given some character development. The "female with white hair" is an all-new character. The new series features lots of new characters. The episodes themselves remain loyal to the original only until episode 7. It's mostly all-new stories or ones inspired by old ones with new twists.
If you are referring to popularity, then Star Wars would be a good comparison. The series was a nationwide phenomenon in Japan during the 70's and early 80's.
It was already released to the rest of the world as Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Anyone can order the original Japanese BDs which already have english subtitles btw. Like I said the only ones who'll remember it as Star Blazers are those who watched it 30 years ago or have copies of the series. Voyager Entertainment is trying "mainstream" it for the western audience when the series is already mainstream to anime fans.
Argo is the licensed name for the ship in the U.S along with the Star Blazers, always been that way with the U.S release of the show. The cut a lot of reference to Japanese life, like drinking spring water instead of Sake. Most people don't connect to a name unless it has meaning in their language. Simple human logic, one of the reason a lot of Japanese anime characters have food based names and such. Naruto comes to mind.

I imagine from a business standpoint their plan is to cash in mostly on people who remember the old American dub. Either that or there are some weird licensing issues like there are with Robotech/Macross.
8UP1977 What I dislike even more is the whitewashing they gave the fate of some of the crew. In the American version no one got killed. The first time I saw the original version, I was shocked at how many died in the battle with the Comet Empire.
Looks incredibly similar to gundam the origin, the commander even looks like general Revil, even the battleships looks similar. Methinks gundam the origin took some cgi animation from this show.
Calm down everyone, the North American discs are out and the names weren't changed. The Yamato remains the Yamato. Character names remain what they were in Japanese. The subtitle track is directly ported over from the Japanese blu-rays. The only change is to the title.
Voyager Entertainment owns the license to the old series and movies. It's the only license they have, so there's no way they'll be selling it to FUNimation.

A lot of kids who seen the first american release of it didn't know the awesomesauce truth. So in some folks hearts they just want it to be the Argo. That's why they're releasing this series under the Star Blazers banner, to appeal to the nostalgia of the fans of the old American broadcast. I kind of wish that they'd keep the subtitles matched to the original Japanese names and save the American names for when they dub the series. That way fans could decide for themselves. Also, $50.00 for four episodes is ridiculous.
I would have to ask, how would a company manage to rename the ship "Argo" when the name "YAMATO" is written all over the ship in English? It is on the uniforms, the hats, the jackets, the bulkheads, and a lot of other places. Dubbed or subbed that will be a problem.
Well, technically, Wave Motion IS Tachyon energy as is described in Yamato 2199, but for the rest, I agree they shouldn't change the title (and ship). But there are a few things they can't go around such as the characters since Yamato takes place in our own world with known locations such as Japan as opposed to other famous anime.
I am full on, four square for STAR BLAZERS 2199: The Argo, Capt. Avatar, Wildstar, Leader Desslok, Xandor, Orion, IQ9 and all the rest of it. The original will always be the original no matter what but as Ferris Bueller might say "I am not Japanese, I don't plan on being Japanese so who gives a crap if you call it the Argo?" One thing I do want to know though is whether they intend to trim back on all the animated T&A. I mean dude, some of the new characters have more curves than Kim Kardashian

The reason is that there are old people who remember about WW2. There was not such a thing and most of them had respected Yamato, though. I know because I lived in Atlanta about 20 years ago.SPEED RACER is also so.Originally they bought Japanese anime named Mach GoGoGo.Indeed, the problem of rights comes out conveniently to the United States
Yamato that I looked at from the United States will be the target of just the bomber. I think that a star blazers did not have to make the name expressly.
So Yamato 2202's initial run of BD's will NOT have English subtitles. This is a total bummer to those like myself that supported Yamato 2199's Bandai Visual releases. So far there's no word on a US release of Yamato 2202. I'm hoping that it's in capable hands if they eventually find a distributor (i.e. NOT Voyager Entertainment).
series is analogous to story of jason and the argonauts so argo would probably be way more appropriate than yamato. plus fact that premise is bogus since they could not have used original ship to begin with, even if it had sank intact sea water would have eaten away too much of hull. plus fact that ship depicted in series is bigger than the original ship. in english dub it could be mentioned design based loosely on ancient battleship to disguise fact they were building ship

your not the writer, the reasons for the name change were so the WWII vet with their kids or grand kids wouldn't be uncomfortable watching a ship called Yamato saving Earth. but since many WWII vets are passing on or don't care and the second reason so the ships name could be identifyable in the US. but since just about everybody is now familiar with japan there is no need for the name Argo, it should be what it is Yamato. also in the original star blazers their was a jefferson davis.
That's not point. Keeping the names do matter here most especially the ship. If you watched the Japanese BDs the word Yamato is all over the ship and patched on their uniforms. Their Japanese names also pop out on a crew member's profile. Editing it would be a very tedious task. And the reason why the names were changed when Yamato was localized as Star Blazers back in the late 70s & early 80s was sensitivity of some countries with Japan in WW2. Now that is no longer the case.
I've never heard of this show before, ( and i like anime) but it looks awesome.:) Hollywood is making a live action movie, but it probably wont be as awesome. :(
Well they are going to launch 2199 in the rest of the world as "StarBlazers 2199" its been confirmed. But still there is no info if they are going to change all names to the old StarBlazers (Dereck, Avatar, Nova, etc) or if its just going to be a dubbing conservating the original names. I doubt they will "kiddi" this now , we are in the XXI century after all.. tought if they do change names they will have trouble with names and stuff that appear onscreen (Yamato has a nameplate in the aft)
I think if they are calling it Star Blazers 2199, they should use the Star Blazers names (Argo, Desslok, Wildstar, etc.) but I won't cry if they don't. I just hope they get good voices and do not repeat the Bolar Wars mistake.

Thankfully fan dubbing/subbing is here to save the day ^_^ They did 2199 for free, then the sequal, and now 2202 : ) Major props to the community!

It was already released to the rest of the world as Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Anyone can order the original Japanese BDs which already have english subtitles btw. Like I said the only ones who'll remember it as Star Blazers are those who watched it 30 years ago or have copies of the series. Voyager Entertainment is trying "mainstream" it for the western audience when the series is already mainstream to anime fans.
Argo is the licensed name for the ship in the U.S along with the Star Blazers, always been that way with the U.S release of the show.
The cut a lot of reference to Japanese life, like drinking spring water instead of Sake.
Most people don't connect to a name unless it has meaning in their language. Simple human logic, one of the reason a lot of Japanese anime characters have food based names and such. Naruto comes to mind.

I imagine from a business standpoint their plan is to cash in mostly on people who remember the old American dub. Either that or there are some weird licensing issues like there are with Robotech/Macross.
8UP1977 What I dislike even more is the whitewashing they gave the fate of some of the crew. In the American version no one got killed. The first time I saw the original version, I was shocked at how many died in the battle with the Comet Empire.

The Tachyon Wave was the weapon Desslar (Desslok) used in that episode to instantly transport his ships to attack the Yamato.
Looks incredibly similar to gundam the origin, the commander even looks like general Revil, even the battleships looks similar. Methinks gundam the origin took some cgi animation from this show.

Calm down everyone, the North American discs are out and the names weren't changed. The Yamato remains the Yamato. Character names remain what they were in Japanese. The subtitle track is directly ported over from the Japanese blu-rays. The only change is to the title.
Can't wait till this comes out in the States.
Voyager Entertainment owns the license to the old series and movies. It's the only license they have, so there's no way they'll be selling it to FUNimation.
You want just subtitles you can import the Japanese blu-rays, They've already got English subtitles.

I dont get why so many "Puritist" think Star Blazer is a bad name.
They should be happy because of this, the anime makes it way to the west, makes it known by The west when the Internet isnt as good as now, i watched the 1974 original and the Star Blazer dubb, While Star blazer dubbed isnt the best but if you compare it too 1974 Ver of Yamato, they sounds better, they eveb goes as far making the dubb opening toned as close as the Japanese one.

The ship is called space battleship YAMATO, based on the legendary battleship Yamato 大和 of the old Japanese imperial navy. So calling the ship Argo and the crew star blazers is ridiculous and horrifying in some way. (Don`t ask why)

A lot of kids who seen the first american release of it didn't know the awesomesauce truth. So in some folks hearts they just want it to be the Argo. However, those are very wrong hearts with beliefs that should be stomped out to accept the reality that is Yamato. then again.... it's just a show...

Eimei Kashman Star Blazers was the name given to the series when Voyager brought over the original Space Battleship Yamato series to the states. That's why they're releasing this series under the Star Blazers banner, to appeal to the nostalgia of the fans of the old American broadcast. I kind of wish that they'd keep the subtitles matched to the original Japanese names and save the American names for when they dub the series. That way fans could decide for themselves.
Also, $50.00 for four episodes is ridiculous.
I would have to ask, how would a company manage to rename the ship "Argo" when the name "YAMATO" is written all over the ship in English? It is on the uniforms, the hats, the jackets, the bulkheads, and a lot of other places. Dubbed or subbed that will be a problem.
Well, technically, Wave Motion IS Tachyon energy as is described in Yamato 2199, but for the rest, I agree they shouldn't change the title (and ship). But there are a few things they can't go around such as the characters since Yamato takes place in our own world with known locations such as Japan as opposed to other famous anime.
I am full on, four square for STAR BLAZERS 2199: The Argo, Capt. Avatar, Wildstar, Leader Desslok, Xandor, Orion, IQ9 and all the rest of it. The original will always be the original no matter what but as Ferris Bueller might say "I am not Japanese, I don't plan on being Japanese so who gives a crap if you call it the Argo?"
One thing I do want to know though is whether they intend to trim back on all the animated T&A. I mean dude, some of the new characters have more curves than Kim Kardashian

That's why I went Blu-Ray....granted they're a bit pricey, but Japanese Blu-Rays are in the same region as American and so I just watch them with the English subtitles on. Yamato, banzai!

They whitewashed this animation.They changed the name of Yamato to STAR BLAZERS. The reason is that there are old people who remember about WW2. There was not such a thing and most of them had respected Yamato, though. I know because I lived in Atlanta about 20 years ago.SPEED RACER is also so.Originally they bought Japanese anime named Mach GoGoGo.Indeed, the problem of rights comes out conveniently to the United States

Actually I made a mistake hardy was replaced by akira Yamamoto in Japan they have the same name but in the us his name is hardy.
Yamato that I looked at from the United States will be the target of just the bomber.
I think that a star blazers did not have to make the name expressly.
So Yamato 2202's initial run of BD's will NOT have English subtitles. This is a total bummer to those like myself that supported Yamato 2199's Bandai Visual releases.
So far there's no word on a US release of Yamato 2202. I'm hoping that it's in capable hands if they eventually find a distributor (i.e. NOT Voyager Entertainment).
series is analogous to story of jason and the argonauts so argo would probably be way more appropriate than yamato. plus fact that premise is bogus since they could not have used original ship to begin with, even if it had sank intact sea water would have eaten away too much of hull. plus fact that ship depicted in series is bigger than the original ship. in english dub it could be mentioned design based loosely on ancient battleship to disguise fact they were building ship

I also didn't find out what Star Blazers was till 2 years after I started watching Space Battleship Yamato and I prefer the Japanse Version thousands of times more then Star Blazers
your not the writer, the reasons for the name change were so the WWII vet with their kids or grand kids wouldn't be uncomfortable watching a ship called Yamato saving Earth. but since many WWII vets are passing on or don't care and the second reason so the ships name could be identifyable in the US. but since just about everybody is now familiar with japan there is no need for the name Argo, it should be what it is Yamato. also in the original star blazers their was a jefferson davis.

That's not point. Keeping the names do matter here most especially the ship. If you watched the Japanese BDs the word Yamato is all over the ship and patched on their uniforms. Their Japanese names also pop out on a crew member's profile. Editing it would be a very tedious task. And the reason why the names were changed when Yamato was localized as Star Blazers back in the late 70s & early 80s was sensitivity of some countries with Japan in WW2. Now that is no longer the case.
I've never heard of this show before, ( and i like anime) but it looks awesome.:) Hollywood is making a live action movie, but it probably wont be as awesome. :(

Well they are going to launch 2199 in the rest of the world as "StarBlazers 2199" its been confirmed. But still there is no info if they are going to change all names to the old StarBlazers (Dereck, Avatar, Nova, etc) or if its just going to be a dubbing conservating the original names. I doubt they will "kiddi" this now , we are in the XXI century after all.. tought if they do change names they will have trouble with names and stuff that appear onscreen (Yamato has a nameplate in the aft)
I think if they are calling it Star Blazers 2199, they should use the Star Blazers names (Argo, Desslok, Wildstar, etc.) but I won't cry if they don't. I just hope they get good voices and do not repeat the Bolar Wars mistake.
