      The bigger engine the better reliability of course... But you know who is the best engine maker of all times... And really they say about Yamaha that it's the weakest from the 4 major japanese companies when it comes to reliability. They say Honda goes first (witch is of course true) then Suzuki then Kawasaki than Yamaha. To me it's also logical about Yamaha because all the other manufacturers except Yamaha we're into making some type of engines. Yamaha was into making fine tuning sticks, then pianos.

      I have no partisan choice when it comes to bike brands. I like any of them that serve me well. I do have to say that my old 14 year old Harley 883 has never had even one mechanical issue, and it is so easy to work on when it comes to maintenance. Sure it is not the smoothest, or fastest, but it amazingly fun to ride. My Suzi has had just a few minor problems. A fuel rail leak, and clutch chudder. For maintenance you better plan all day for even minor work like cleaning the air-filter. Honda GL 1800, 15 years old and still runs, and looks like new. Have had some wiring issues. The have broken from being put in a place where they are folded every time the trunk lid is opened, and closed. Maintenance is both easy, and hard. Rear tire is easy. Air-filter requires removing an unbelievable amount of the bike just to get to it.

    Japanese bikes are great, so no surprises here. I ride a 30 year old Honda 600. 145mph is till within her capacity and since the guys in Japan buttoned up the engine in 1988 the only mechanical addition has been a manual cam-chain tensioner which was fitted as a precaution. Oh and the fuel pump died a few years ago, which meant that the bottom gallon was not available. Neither item cost much especially as I do all my own maintenance. I replaced the steering head bearings with taper rollers, and changed all the hydraulic lines (30 years is too old for them!) but the seals are all original and have not been removed.
    I did up-rate the lights with HID headlight, but that's not because the old one did n't work, it did.
    Nothing failed, and just a few things replaced because of age or wear.
    Honda build quality,,, they always had it and still do.
    Oh, I've also owned Suzukis and Yamahas and all were as reliable as a rock, but I do do my maintenance. Never owned a Kawasaki although I have ridden a few... must try to remedy that before I fall off my twig (76 now!).
    We all ride in the same wind...... keep safe y'all... :-)

    • @returnedtotheearth1326
      @returnedtotheearth1326 5 лет назад +10

      It wouldn't matter if they were number 1. It depends on whether they make a bike that appeals to you. Who cares about reliability? I only care if it looks good, rides good, has good build quality. After that you hope it don't break down but if it does it does. No big deal. I'd rather have 20,000 miles on a great bike than 20,000 on a reliable bike.

    • @coreyschmidt1647
      @coreyschmidt1647 5 лет назад +17

      Only problem is HD isn't more reliable, I know for a fact most HD owners will not take their bike to the dealer for repair if it is out of warranty. Owning a HD is a stupid wannabe show of being a manly man to most HD owners, and taking your ride to the dealer for repair is "showing that you're a pussy that can't fix your own hog" in the eyes of those insecure little boys. And hence all the repairs they do themselves would not be tabulated in the data used to compile this list.

    • @sleggett243
      @sleggett243 5 лет назад +28

      Corey Schmidt that same logic can be applied to any bike. Dealer prices are outrageous, and Harley’s are easy to work on because they are so simple. Don’t hate, if I can afford one anyone can.

    • @Texarmageddon
      @Texarmageddon 5 лет назад

      Doesn’t amount to much when their bikes still come with optional ABS only and nothing else.... their bikes are tech deprived which isn’t a horrible thing, but if I were a betting man and said take the tech away from all brands.... HD would be dead last

    • @coreyschmidt1647
      @coreyschmidt1647 5 лет назад +4

      Sam Leggett I'm stating it as a point of typical owner mentality with HD, along with the obnoxiously loud exhaust that makes everyone hope they wreck so we don't have to listen to that loud pos anymore. And just to clarify, I ride a triumph so I know all about reliability problems. Also price of HD was never mentioned, so now you're just bragging that you own one. I just can't make myself part with that kind of money for a bike that is %80 technology from the 1930's.

    I am the third owner of a 2011 Yamaha FZ16 (150 CC) and whenever I ride it, I bow down to Yamaha for building such a fantastic bike. The first rider who bought it in 2011, rode it till 2015, the second one rode it till 2017, which was the year when I bought it for real cheap.
    And since then, I've been riding it on all kinds of terrains, as hard as I wish but the bike doesn't seem to show any sign of non-cooperation.

    I'm genuinely surprised Harley made it on this list: I brought a brand spankin new Dyna Fat Bob, and in the two years I've owned it, I've blown both front fork seals, had the front brakes rebuilt (which was misdiagnosed as a faulty tail light switch that was replaced twice), and my rockerbox seal replaced. Granted these are minor issues, and they do stand by their warranty, it is genuinely concerning that (on avg), I'm at my dealership at least once every 6 months for warranty work on top of routine maintenance.

    The advantage of Harleys, especially the carburetor equipped, is simplicity. Even the most modest of amateur mechanics can repair them when given the handful of tools needed, a jack stand, and a manual. The key to keeping ownership costs down is to go with aftermarket fluids, parts, and accessories.

I had to replace the starter on the Honda. The petcock on the yamaha had to be replaced because it kept leaking and the fork seals needed to be replaced twice. Great channel. Did some research, the average sports bike most of the top 4 in the list averaged 3000 miles per year 12000 for the period in the report. Where as the touring bike and cruiser “BMW and Harley “ averaged 5000 to 6000 miles per year or 10000 to 12000 for the period in the report. That’s twice the average as the top 4. So looks like not much validity to consumers report.

    Back in 2002 I bought a new Midnight Venture.. rode it to California and back to New Jersey. I did change the oil in Arizona. In 2003 I put a Dyna ignition and set the limiter to 7,500 and K&N air cleaners. That took it from uh, OK power to Wow, I had no idea. At 40,000 miles it was getting hard to start so I put new plugs, sync'd the carbs, and put new brake pads on the rear. In 2017 the clutch was slipping a little so I added another diaphragm spring on top of the original (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know) $52.00 for the spring, $10.00 for the gasket and 1/2 hours work. I have NEVER had to add oil in between oil changes. It has about 63,000 miles on it and still no major problems. Just a rock solid bike. I'm slowing down but the Yamaha isn't. I'm a Vietnam Vet so that gives away my age.

    I’ve been a long haul truck driver for the past 27 years and the main reason I work is to ride motorcycles when not working. I used to start each new trip with a clean slate and count how many bikes broken down on the side of the road and try to make out their brand. Most of the time it’s easy to see who is who but of course it’s very easy to spot the Harley’s. My census was always consistent that Harley’s were the number one winner. In the summer time when more bikes were on the road I could drive 3000 to 4000 miles and usually see at least half a dozen Harley’s with dudes standing over them with their cell phones to their ears. This eventually became a boring thing to do because there were never any new surprises. I would love to buy American but not if they are going to leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere

      Most owner operators use Michelin for their steer tires and Bridgestone’s are very decent drive tires. I also use Michelin tires for the lowboy commercial boat trailers that I use. More expensive up front but much cheaper in the long run.

Their electrics seem solid nowadays, but look up the amount of people who have flywheel runout problems on the big twins once they get over 20k.
