How in the world can people see this as a good review!? Honest maybe, but fatally flawed in all other respects. Utter BS really!
Sound test - one sited. Why not make some putts with ProV1 for comparison. It would have been easy to do, true? Then chipping, same story, no comparison. I was not even sure what he was testing. What was good or not so good. And we go on... next up bunker, yes we can see some marks on the PXG ball after ten shots. But hey! You guessed it... no comparison. Over to the seven and six iron joke; the honest reviewer made sure that his message (there is something wrong with this ball) came across loud and clear. And as per usual no comparison. Finally the big stick is out and, lo and behold now we got a comparison. Humpf.. still the honest reviewer approach is strange: Why not interlace the hits (between PV1 and PXG). And why not use unbiased technology (to at least assist with) for spin numbers etc.
If the review is honest then forgive him; for he doesn't know what he is doing.
I'm a Pro V1 guy (I have not tested the PXG XTREME ball).

So, I just played 18 holes with the PXG balls in a 40 degrees north east weather. So I am a senior player with a swing speed of less than 80 mph. I am posting this because my results are great, especially the short game spin. Overall, the driver and hyprid were very similar but the short game spin was noticable better with PXG. I really liked the extreme white color and the extra spin on my short irons.
Again, I am a senior golfer so everyone is different, but for me this is in my bag. I have been playing the Pro V1 for years but for me, this is a better ball because of its short game spin.

It also has the same dimple pattern and same type of cover, but with a different inside. Basically, many believe it's just a Kirkland ball with a firmer core and a better paint job. Also, it's $39.99 in the US, so a good $10-$15 lower than most of the premium balls.

Received my PXG balls yesterday. I took them and a PRO V1x to the practice green and putted it. I cannot agree with your assessment that the PXG ball is clickier/harder feeling or sounding than the pro v1x. They were almost exactly the same feel off a David Edel putter. Admittedly the EDEL putter is extraordinarily soft. Nonetheless, there was no difference in feel between PXG and PRO V1x. Rick, you may be a bit biased. I’ve played Pro V1x since it came out.

What I believe would be good if it was tested how the ProV1 would have spun on the greens in comparison to the PXG ball - I think performance is very dependent on the conditions during day this was filmed.
And also, the photo of the ProV1 was of the new model and Rick tested the old one. This, however, makes sense as I am certain that PXG were comparing themselves to the old model.

Rick, your chart that you displayed for about 2 seconds shows a club head speed of 108 but a ball speed of 87 for the pro v1, and 108 for the pxg ball. Kind of hard to buy in to the accuracy of your test with data like that. Ball speeds should be roughly 1.4 to 1.5 times the clubhead speed depending on quality of the strike. From what I gathered in watching your field test is that the pxg ball is considerably louder like a top flite surlyn ball but other than that your test is very subjective.
The only true way to test the two balls is by using a trackman monitor and an iron byron swing machine. I enjoy your videos a great deal and I especially liked your Stealth 2 evaluation. I’ll withhold judgement on the pxg balls until I have a chance to play one.

  • @Steelman1957

I've played 3 rounds with the PXG ball and it performed just fine. Also didn't have the scuff issues. Greenside with my 60 wedge, got plenty of spin so much so it spun more than a Pro V1x when I tried them side by side. Where I didn't like the PXG ball as well was off the irons. Seemed to spin a bit more and cost a bit of distance, about 1/2 a club. Sound for me wasn't bad off clubs or putter and that may be due to the clubs I use and putter I use. I would say, at this point, the PXG ball is more comparable to a 3 piece mid-price urethane ball and just under where the Tour balls are but it is still a solid performer for the price (I can get them for 35 per dozen) and for most amateur players it will work well.

I just got a dozen for free after doing a PXG fitting, and thought it looked familiar until I pulled out one of my Kirkland balls. I'm convinced they're nearly identical, and wouldn't be surprised if the only differences are the printing on the outside and the color of the core.

While im no PXG fan, I think this ball isnt marketed to those that can hit the ball long. Yes, it says on the box that it is longer than a ProV1, but I think swing speed is a bit of a factor here and most that get this ball, will be hitting it at a lower swing speed which maaaaay take off some of the spin rate meaning it may go a little longer for some folks. Just my two cents. Would love to see @txg take a swing at this!

I also find it odd that the ball was 4mph slower off the driver and spun less with wedges which is opposite of TXGs review which had the PXG ball faster by 1mph from wedge to driver and spun more producing similar numbers to the ProV1X. The harder feel is consistent with its firmer core which is firmer than the ProV1X and more similar to a left dash. The firmer core should be faster and in line with the TXG review. 4mph is to big of a gap so I'm not sure how you fudged this one up Rick. I don't even see 4mph difference between two piece pinnacle range balls and premium balls unless they are flight limiting.

    Hi Rick,
Can I make a suggestion and this stems from the fact that all new golf equipment (and in this case, golf balls) is aimed at 99% of golfers, being your everyday average person.
Golf balls, the only item you really need on a golf course and are the only golfing accessory that are lost in their thousands every week. Buying the most expensive golf ball doesn’t make you a better player, is the same way buying the most expensive football doesn’t make you a better footballer.
But mentally, playing with a nice golf ball just feels good. But which one?
Yes, you can go on RUclips and watched all the videos showing how good golf balls are and how far they go, how high they climb into the sky and how much they spin blah blah blah. But for 99% of all golfers it’s all pie in the sky. In reality, the golf ball is only as good as it’s been hit.
This suggestion has been prompted by the introduction of the PXG ball and all the tests on RUclips. Firstly, I play with PXG clubs. When I buy golf equipment there really isn’t much difference between all the manufacturers for the average golfer. So, I tend to choose equipment from a company that I feel has the closest personality to me. Therefore, I was interested in the PXG golf balls (even though I remember Bob Parsons, during an interview with Bunkered Mag, said he would never go into the golf ball market), just to see what they were like. That interest stopped when I saw the price.
I don’t think there is anyone on RUclips that gives a fair assessment of a golf ball for the average golfer. My world handicap is 15, watching a professional or some robot smashing a golf ball down the centre of the fairway, time after time and telling me, yes that ball went 3 yards further than the other one and spun more. Is about as relevant as telling me that the atoms in this golf ball bounce nicely together.
What would be relevant would be if they did the tests side by side with an average golfer. And not hitting ball after ball but to limit the number of balls to say 3. Perhaps, 3 Pro v’s, 3 PXG, 3TP 5’s and 3 Kirkland golf balls and test them using a 5 iron or 5 wood. No one gets to stand on a tee and hit ball after ball, you only get one go. So, 3 balls maybe a good compromise, also I don’t expect them all to go straight.
At the end of test you can compare what a Pro hits against how an average golfer hits them. Which balls now performed the best and what was the difference in distance, spin and height etc.
You might say, well actually Pro V’s are the best by a factor of X, or you might end up saying, “Don’t kid yourself, you are going to lose 1 out of every 3 and the difference between the most expensive and the cheapest for an average golfer isn’t worth the effort.”
It would be nice if the average golfer finds that PXG balls are the best. At which point I can say “That’s great, but they are still not worth the price.”
And the Pro can tell the average golfer, the best way to improve your golf would be to buy the cheapest ball and use the money you save on lessons to improve your swing.
    John Robinson
PS: really looking forward to your 200th podcast.

Others absolutely swear by them. And good for them! I know it's a top-notch ball but they just don't resonate with me. If we all experienced the same feels and sounds from golf equipment, we'd all play the same stuff, right?
These review are all interesting, but I'd go experience this ball or any golf equipment for yourself before reaching any conclusions. You're very likely to come away with a radically different opinion than you'd expect.

Funny, the other online reviewers like the sound, and have given it good reviews.

As someone who is *very* new to golf, this sounds essentially the same as Intel making a gaming GPU (their first attempt at it) but completely forgetting that GPU’s need drivers to function properly. Not to mention the Intel GPU’s are glued together.
It’s hilariously similar, as the PXG balls fall short with drivers, and aren’t exactly the most durable balls out there.
At least Intel isn’t flat out lying about the performance of their product. That being said, I hope PXG uses this as a learning experience for future products.

Rick should find a way to get in touch with Bob Parsons of PXG, he seems like a super cool dude who would appreciate Rick's input.

Rick, your opinion of the PXG ball’s durability is pretty accurate. The first full iron shot I hit with it scuffed the cover of the ball. The ball is a bit spinny to me. On two occasions the ball spun back about 15 feet. Lastly, it’s difficult to get used to looking at the PXG logo when you’ve played Titleist for 20+ years.

Callaway Golf is the best golf products on the market. Nothing else compares to them in my opinion. I have all old school Callaway clubs in my bag and even tee up Callaway golf balls too. I can play well with them so I will never change to anything else.

These tests can always come down to how Rick is feeling on that day.
A multi day test, or even week long review would make more sense and be more useful for consumers

Once again you have done a wonderful, comprehensive review. Thanks! I go back and forth between pv1/pv1x and tp5/tp5x You may have already done that comparison between the 4. Do you have a chart of the result or a link to that video? Thanks so much for your time!

Thanks for the review of the PXG golf ball. Don't sound like a golf ball to change to for myself. I guess it is what we all feel comfortable with on a daily basis. Now if I should find one or two of these along the fence lines or someone loses this ball in the high rough, I will give them a whack. But for right now, I will stick with my current golf ball.
    Thanks again and take care.
