Syd Barrett - Have You Got It Yet?

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 12 май 2010
  • My imagined version.
According to Roger Waters, Barrett came into what was to be THE Pink Floyd's last practice session with a new song he had dubbed "Have You Got It Yet?". The song seemed simple enough when he first presented it to his bandmates, but it soon became impossibly difficult to learn and they eventually realized that while they were practising it, Barrett kept changing the arrangement. He would then play it again, with the arbitrary changes, and sing "Have you got it yet?". Eventually they realized they never would and that they were simply bearing the brunt of Barrett's idiosyncratic sense of humour

This song is performed differently everytime by him. It was more of a tease to Waters who wanted to play the song too. He never got it because it was different everytime he played it. It can also be seen as a wink to the soul of what Pink Floyd in the old days stood for.
So not a troll, more a musical poet that has some harmless fun on behalf of his mate.

@@nickfinamori9992 syd barrett is a completely different entity than the other members of “the floyd”. They were totally experimental and unfocussed freak-out 1967 band without syds input, and were completely lost without him. They made some decent songs without him, until they realized they had to find their own identity and grow into their own as musicians working together. Syd had a mystical well of wonders he could draw from whenever he needed to for lyrics chord progression/melodies. What he needed were real friends and supervision.
If your “friends” don’t have your best interest at heart, then those are not your friends. Solitude is a one way ticket to insanity, especially for a male who is high in creativity and openness.

I think a lot of Sid's so-called incidents can possibly be just a big misunderstanding, though they're certainly worth times when he would act out intentionally.

As you know, the song was never recorded. Roger said in an interview that when he figured out Syd was constantly changing it *on purpose*, he put his bass down, left the room, and never played with Syd again.
I had a friend like that. We could write songs together, but if I tried to sing a harmony, he *immediately* changed what he was singing, including the words. He felt this was "artistry", but what it looked like was "assholery".

a brilliant practical joke by Syd telling the rest of the band that he was miles above them and they would never ever get that height he was way above there heads because of his huge LSD consumption he had connected with spirit like a shaman when that happens an endless flow of creativity comes with it as long as you can empty your mind it can be filled from above which is where the magic comes from, after years of mimicing psychedelia i to learnt how to do it with my psyche surreal artwork, i never ever knew what i was going to draw i just used to get this feeling that somets coming through and without putting any concsious thought into it i used to draw these amazing layered detailed mind blowing drawings ( other peoples opinions) unfortunately they were so detailed and complex i hardly ever finished any after a few days of drawing one thing i used to get a feeling that a new one was coming through so i have a massive pile ( a lot of it lost) of unfinished masterpeices similiar to H.R Gieger without the horror then my illnesses gradualy took me over and i just stopped like Syd i was born with mental illness then in my teens and twenties i took copious amounts of psychedelics of every kind penatrated the very fabric of reality, opened up portals, got took to other realms of reality had out of body experiences performed magical deeds once on LSD wile listening to Barrett lp i left my body where Syd joined me and we floated along the ceiling together wile he told me that i understood his work perfectly as it was meant to be heard, much like Syd i have had a life of despair, psychosis, phobias, terror, depression and pure euphoric magic i have reached heights that no one else has maybe even syd but life in the matrix is ying and yang and i payed a heavy price for learning secret knowledge, i dont realy take entheogens any more but my spirit guides are still with me giving me daily downloads of knowledge. so seekers of the esoteric beware, but also remember the quote from Christ " be still and you will know God" i.e learn to empty your head so he can come through. our minds are not our own ( Carlos Casteneda - Active side of infinity)

    I *LoVe* THIS vidya!
Besides the shirt, I heard David Gilmour also took over as Mrs Barrett's son for a couple years in the 70's while Syd was eating chocolates in a London hotel room. Clearly, Dave wanted to *BE* Syd since childhood. If you check his underwear to this day, it has 'RKB' stitched on the label.

Only the most devoted Syd fans would check out this song. Lee Mavers of The La's was too often compared to Syd, a recluse, quit music, reportedly erratic from drugs, to his fans a genius. But was Lee unstable from drugs, just a perfectionist, or acting out from the producers turning his sound into "a snake with a broken back"? Or all three? Note Lee never stayed flipped out nor was that severe. So now studying Syd as a Lee fan. I thought Lee's antics got worse as frustrating recording went on & on, '87 through '90. But I found this '87 video of Way Out, first single. Already he was weird, on & off. So was he sort of flipped out in this or was he just acting out the anger of the song topic about a "way out" of economic depression, lack of jobs in Liverpool. Who knows. Prob on youtube if in UK:. www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4309947?ref=search_key_video&ss_pos=1&ss_id=98b3cf1d-52f5-484d-8abf-a2a476e37b9c

Lee had an early punk influence, how much of this behavior on the Way Out video is just being punkish. But typically he liked order and being precise. He was right to be angry. The label's hired help couldn't even get this video in sync with the vocals. If anything the anger "flipped him out" - for a while.

I have heard and read that many people consider Syd's music with the early Floyd to be one of the first examples of the "New wave punk" music that became popular in the late 70's. Listen to Lucifer Sam off their first album and see if you disagree with me

It sounds a bit like Velvet Underground to me, which fits in with what you're saying as the Velvets and Lou Reed are often called the godfather's of punk and new wave.

@@kevanbrown7620 I have read that The Stooges debut album from 1968 is considered to be the first punk album because there was a negative record review from some magazine that said that "These guys are a bunch of punks"

@@barrygreenstein8383 I think both Lou Reed and Iggy Pop have had a big influence on punk and new wave. Actually the Sex Pistols recorded the Stooges track No Fun for their b-side to Pretty Vacant so you're right about the Stooges influence.
