That's OK. It has Biblical allusions, but it's really not a religious song. Lots of people take it at face value and assume it is, but... (whispers) it's kinda about sex if you read between the lines.

They take away the meaning of it and make it something bad. Something that fits whatever they want it to. I think that's wrong. It was made for people in a certain religious. Sameee! One time after midnight I listened to this song and totally had a moment of worship.. "it's not a cry that you hear at night, it's not somebody who's seen the light, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah" it was totally beautiful, I've just gone through a season where I'm totally lost and broken, and there were times that I was just crying to Him not as someone close to Him and just desiring to get closer to Him but just simply, "Lord I don't know what's happening but still I acknowledge You and still will worship you, and you alone could help me out of this misery" (like the people in this song who sinned and wants to get back to God though they've done miserable things) don't know exactly how it means but to me it means like you can't seem to have faith, or like you don't really know how to approach God or you've sinned and not that bold to go to Him, still trusting and hoping that the Lord would come to you, and acknowledging His supremacy, being God and still worshipping Him 💖

I’m an agnostic, so usually the religious Christmas songs kinda wig me out cause there’s only so much “Love Jesus” you can take, but I have a unique love for this song. This song means so much more to me, and the lyrics are ambiguous enough that they reference religion but it doesn’t HAVE to be religious.
This song has gotten me through panic attacks, through times my family were screaming at each other in the next room, through so much pain and loss that even now it’s my go-to. There’s something so powerful and emotional about this song that really connected to me

I fail to see how these magnificent, poignant lyrics promote Christian dogma. If you disagree, please explain the verse that starts by questioning the existence of a deity.
I mean it wasn't a Christian song to begin with. There's a missing Stanza that is so poignantly Jewish, in line with Leonard's upbringing, that's been removed to make it more appealing to Christians.
It's also NOT supposed to be a happy song.
It wasn’t written as a religious song. It’s about dualism in life and “Hallelujah” is kind of like the times when you are able to just accept it at it is. It’s a beautiful song.

I think that it's not okay that people are correcting your for the 'god has a capital g'. Because what Mitch says is "maybe there's A god above" meaning that it's possible, but still questioned. He doesn't say "maybe God's above" or something along those lines, he says a God which is left for anyone to assume what god or what kind of god. All in all you literally make the best lyric videos I've ever seen - this is so aesthetically pleasing and beautiful to watch!

It's just what it is, a cold and broken Hallelujah that comes from someone who recognizes our human weakness and brokenness, who doesn't know his Lord, yet but knows that there's something much more superior, higher and powerful. In my opinion, the best written, most beautiful arrangement of hallelujah there is.
Whether it is our best or worst time, this song brings us all to that same nostalgic place we once knew. Some listen in memory of others, some listen to this is times of great joy. I am currently on my band bus on the way home from my high school winning the state championship for the first time since 1933. It is one of the best times. However, I also listen in the worst times. Those long, dreary, and sad nights where nostalgia and longing sets in. And so I ask, when do you listen to this song?
I listen when I need something to be for a while. This song makes me whole, and I listen to it when I'm tired of being broken.
I don't have money to burn, but if I did I would take singing lessons just to learn how to sing this song. It is just one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to.

This song wreaks me every time. It reminds me not of the hurts of my past, the disappointments, the failure, the broken hearts, the frailty of mind, body and will. Like David, Sampson, the lyricist, I’ve had hard times. But God has seen me through it all. He has been there through the victories and defeats, the mountains and the valleys, prosperity and poor, love and loneliness. In the midst of all that, His Presence has enveloped me and I’ve sung and prayed in the heavenly language as I encountered my Creator, Father, Saviour and Friend. If you listen carefully the second verse is the woman talking about is the man's faith until he "saw her bathing on her roof in the moonlight" (also the part where it says "she ties to the kitchen chair and from your lips she drew the hallejah") and the fourth is about the girlfriend/wife killing him "how to shoot someone who outdrew ya". So yes this song is defintely not a Christian song.

What a sad but beautiful comment. I'm sorry you haven't met Jesus yet. But if you are willing to see if you are missing something, Just talk to God as you would someone sitting next to you. Tell Him how and why you believe what you do or don't. Then tell Him that if you are wrong, you give Him permission to show you his love and reality of His existence. When He does, get to know Jesus and ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit. God will not ignore this because He loves all of us and is waiting on us to believe and be saved. He forgives the worst of the worst. He doesn't want anyone to perish. The Holy Spirit starts to teach us things and our hearts and minds begin to change. It's amazing. The peace is like a new life. When I got saved, my breast cancer was healed, arthritis was healed, addiction was gone with no dt's and not a desire again for meth. I pray you will do this and ask Him to save you and cleanse you. Its why Jesus came in the flesh
