I do feel like people miss the point of Bloberta introducing Clay to alcohol, specifically when he says, "You really helped me come out of my shell." And also the one time we see Bloberta's father and her connecting is when he is super drunk and able to almost speak his mind about things. Plus, with Bloberta's previous comment about alcohol bringing out people's true natures.
It just reads as a very misguided and tragic line of thinking where Bloberta thought she was helping this uptight and clean cut man be able to properly socialise and be open to marriage through alcohol.
Yes, Bloberta isn't blameless for being stuck in a toxic and loveless marriage, but it really adds to the tragedy of Bloberta wanting to be needed and to be seen as helping to a man who honestly fell apart the moment he was able to drink. They were destined to ruin each other but they put their selfish desires above their needs in a relationship and now everyday is like choking down poison for both of them.
It was moments like these in season 3 that really makes me wish we at least had a full season and more exploration of these characters. Something about these characters with their imperfections and flaws feels so much more real and scarily true to life the older I get.

Her coming from a family that constantly alienated her and made her feel unwanted might explain why she is not an affectionate mother at all, and instead only deals with the basic needs of the household. Sure, she tends to her children, but she avoids any and all actual conversations. Her answers are always short when she talks to Orel, if she doesn't instead just delegate the task of dealing with Orel's emotional needs/questions to Clay. She only does tasks that are objectively 'helpful'.
It seems to me, that because she didn't have a good mother, her parenting style is based on her father, who cared for her but the abuse had rendered him emotionally unavailable.

I find it hard to summarize and judge the people in this show.
Easy to call clay and or bloberta a monster, but pretty much everyone in the town is broken in some way, and kindness is a rarity.
I like this show, because it's a fever dream that reminds me so much of reality. It certainly doesn't give me many tips on how to cope with abuse, but it does at least make me feel like I'm not alone, and it makes me question if the ways I do cope are abusive.
This show depicts abuse in so many ways. It's like the writers just tossed a bunch of their own experiences into a hat and made a character who would go through that abuse.

If you want to watch something that talks a little more about how we can move beyond our abuse and pain, bojack horseman is also a great show. Also, if you really want to try to figure it out, therapy is great. When you have thoughts like "I feel shitty and I want to stop feeling shitty but I don't know how! Or I want to know why!" Therapy basically exists for that reason.
You are right, some of the ways you cope might be abusive, towards others or towards yourself. But you always have a chance to take that step towards something better, a better version of you, a version that has a different way to cope with the pain. (Sorry unforuntately the pain will always be there, it may lessen with time though)

The fact of the matter is that 100% of people are incompatible in some way and every relationship will have their struggle, and the only way to find out if marriage would work out is to test the waters.

Everyone talks about Bloberta being the push Clay needed into a valley of acoholism, but no one talks about how Clay's behavior while drunk seems to spiral her into her cleanliness obsession + a doubling down on Protestant values.
In one night, they brought out both the worst in each other and made it permanent.

Props for not making bloberta the victim of clay like other shows. She’s just as bad and helped turn clay into the monster Orel saw in the woods. The fact that Orel was such a good kid with parents like them is the biggest miracle in this show.

If you remember Clay's mom, Angela, telling him about the many times she was pregnant with his still born siblings. She mentions a lot about how she missed out on smoking, drinking and other rigorous activities during her pregnancy with Clay. I honestly believe this was intended to reveal to the audience that Clay's addictions to substances was genetically inherited from his mother. Angela being addicted to Cigs, booze, and adrenaline. Leading to her having a frail heart condition from how she's abused her body. Clay was failed, both by nature and nurture.

John Darnielle made a pair of reoccuring characters in the Mountain Goats' songs called The Alpha Couple. They're both fundamentally broken people who fall in love but are horribly incompatible, and just leeches off of each other, and alcohol is what drives the relationship or even makes it slightly functional. They decide they want to fix things, and move together to Tallahassee in a little house where they rot and never see the light of day until the house burns down. They hate each other, but cannot stand being alone so they stay miserable.
Huh! I sure do hope this lovely couple don't match that description.

I just noticed. After Bloberta said alcohol helps people to become better, she mentions her father drinks. When her father is drunk enough, he at least tries to become a better father.

The whole point of the show is that no adult in it is a good person ffs, you don't need to label them with a "scary-sounding" mental illness for that message to carry across. By separating people into monsters using pop psychology labels and normal people instead of accepting that maybe real life people are complex, you're only making it harder for yourself to notice when you, your friends, or your loved ones are exhibiting toxic or abusive behaviors. It's also a dangerous road to convincing yourself into believing that abuse is who you are at your core rather than what you do, meaning "I can't change, so why bother trying" (which is the very mindset criticized with Principal Fakey's character lol)

Dude, literally one of the biggest plot points in the show is that NO adult in moralton is a 'good' person; they're all traumatized in some way, and as a result, use that trauma to hurt others. It's showing the dangers of the intergenerational cycle of abuse- why do you think they have the flashbacks of Bloberta and Clay, two of the shows biggest shitheads? They're not 'evil' at the core- they're two people who never got help. You don't need to misapply terms used to describe legitimate mental illnesses in order to brand characters as unconditionally evil. Btw, narcissism as a illness seems to be a coping mechanism for childhood abuse, much like bpd. It does not brand someone as a malicious monster whose worth absolutely nothing.

If my dad didn't take no for an answer the first time, I think it might explain why I just never felt comfortable around him.
