We are happy to learn that we did most things properly to ensure the longevity of those Cumins engines by using tow and haul, warming the cold engine, idling prior to shutting her down and blasting/burning out particulates after parking the 5th wheel. Back then while climbing we used the EGT readings to choose the proper gear and fuel to protect the Cumins, and on the level considered the power curve to determine our speed.

very odd, you must have different rams up there, in my 2018 1500 MDS still kicks in with tow haul activated, even more interesting is that I have no "current gear" indicator. I have a gear limitation selection where I can select the highest gear it will go into. During gear selection mode MDS will disengage.
@samueldavis5895 it's basically engine brakes. It holds on to gears longer when going up or downhill it keeps you in the hemi PowerBand for a while so you can haul better
The 2012 RAM 3500 combination of "tow and haul" as well as the exhaust braking system and trailer braking system was a God send while towing the 5th wheel and having a string of deer cross the expressway. As I forcefully applied the brakes, I could hear the rapid and repeated down shifts and grumble of the Cumins. When the last deer was avoided, we had very quickly and safely lost 50 mph.

Tow/haul mode was kind of freaky running at 3400 RPMs sometimes going up to 4000 RPMs. After a few minutes, the check engine light came on. Never had this problem with my F150. I guess this will take getting used to. After a while the tow/haul light went out and the truck still operated like it was in TH mode. Now, I have to get the check engine light looked at. Not cool.
I’ve been using the gear limited in my 4th gen 1500 with the 3.6 to get a bit more out of it and I’ve been curious about the tow/haul mode but I never messed with it. Imma combine both 👀
great info, thanks. we tow a 6000lb travel trailer several thousand km every year with our 1500(hemi 8 sp). about half of that towing is at regular highway speeds, ie 100-105 kph. we can tell instantly if we forget to activate the T/H after a stop with engine off! at highway speeds it will go into 7th at 100 kph and even 8th on a long gentle down grade that doesn't require braking. Upshafts are delayed by around 1000 rpm, downshifts are much earlier when braking. it is a pretty smart system, far better than the one on our previous truck(dakota towing 4000lb)
I used the tow/haul button on my 2016 ram 1500 hemi today and after reaching my destination and unloading my trailer and turning the truck back on and started to head home and my transmission started acting funny and shifting terribly and slamming into gear and won't down shift when accelerating.......transmission seems ruined now with tow/haul off. Will never use the button again and need a new transmission......was only towing 6000 lbs 😢
I have the updated gauge cluster on my Ram like yours but for some reason, mine doesn't show what gear I'm in as I'm driving... My truck has the 65RFE 6spd transmission, so I wonder if that makes a difference? Mine only shows the gear selector/limiter but not what gear I'm in. I wish it showed what gear I was in. Maybe it's a feature that got added to newer 4th Gens. I know yours is a 2017 and mine is 2015.
I know it's a lil late but I just found this video, I have a 2014 with a gear selector and dash that does show the gear I'm in but I have an 8 spd, may have something to do with it
Pulled 5000lb trailer and it went to 8th gear, great mph. Then towed 3700 lb. It stayed in 6th. Mph dropped by 25%. How to get 8th? Thnx. Turned tow haul on and off during entire trip. Would only get to 7th downhill as in your demo. BUT would not go to 8th. Which I wanted it to. 2020 1500 ram, 5.7, 3.21 gearing. Again the heavier trailer went to 8th no problem...these are light weights in travel trailers and I obviously want that better mpg.
I'm finding that my transmission on my 2021 ram warlock with a V6 is acting like tow haul mode even when it's off. Ever since getting a slightly bigger trailer at a 780 lb aluminum trailer, it takes forever just to get into 67th gear. It sits forever at 5th or 6th to the point that I just feel like I'm sucking gas. I go into manual and bring it down the 5th. This is on flat ground without headwind. I'm about to reset my computer and maybe drive around with my trailer for a week and see if that helps it calm down. If I went into tall hall mode it probably would never even go into six gear. I can't afford to drive all the way to work and around town at 3200 RPMs for 20 minutes with an unloaded trailer that's insanity. Half my mileage on my trailer is empty cuz I'm moving things around.
I tow my travel trailer with stuff is approximately 4500 lbs. At 100kms in tow mode and cruise control on my hemi is screaming at 2800-2900 rpm. Just to stay at 100kms which is crazy. I find the truck pulls better out of tow mode. Looking into trading it in. Want to switch to 2500 so I get better performance.
I’m not sure I fully understand the need for the HEMI in a 1500. If you’re going for the big engine, it seems to follow that you would want the heavy duty
In my 2024 hemi with 3.92, while towing my 7500lb travel trailer, the engine braking in tow haul is quite aggressive especially while using cruise control. I think they made some software changes because my 2018 would not go above 6th gear but this new one has gone to 8th in tow haul while towing. Not often, mind you, but it does it. Thanks for the great video.
Can I use tow / haul mode while not actually towing and will it hurt my truck ? I like the concept of it holding rpms longer so I want to see if I notice a difference between normal and tow / haul without a trailer so please let me know if it’s ok for me to do so
Nope. Honestly it’s only going to help with your braking. Been towing basically everything for years with 2012 big horn 1500. It can pull anything I’ve put on her but, definitely has trouble stopping over 8,000 lbs or so. That’s when it can be kind of dangerous because you just never know when you need to make an emergency stop.
My 2017 eco diesel 4x4 (3.55 gears) with T/H on turns on trailer brakes at the settings I have set. I think the engine goes into a different tune as well. Please use your T/H when towing because it makes everything so much better.
Was wondering how eTorque affects Tow/Haul mode or how Tow/Haul mode affect eTorque. Silly me thinks I've read or heard something about coolant around rear differential, but that seems far fetched
Great Video, love the ram content. Question do you happen to know what temps your coolant, trans, and oil was when you towed your trailer? I tow a travel trailer loaded at around 8500lbs. My trans temp hardly moves much, oil will touch 120C when towing in the summer. I drive in the prairies though no big hills or mountains for me.
couldn't tell you the exact numbers. but when towing my trailer loaded the trans and oil temp would stay right in the middle of the gauge. only when pulling up mountains did my oil and trans temp sky rocket. my coolant stayed the same place on the gauge no matter what I did lol
All I know is that if your cruising no matter what gear I've noticed the rpms rise 250rpms more when pressing the tow/haul mode. It's also great for drag racing.
