I love the love that Josh displays on these things, does not matter who made it, sometimes it does not matter if it is good, the fact that it exists (and has a box) is more important to Josh.
this one sounds awesome
I love how although your income is derived from the manufacture and sale of your brand of pedals, you consistently show and talk up the pedals of other manufacturers. Major respect, dude!
He made a pedal with Boss.
They know what they are doing.
Boss are the King.
Agreed, mad respect.
Still business 😉
Together they are strong.
Makes me want to buy at least one of his tbh
Love it when Josh gets really excited about gear! Thanks for the showing us the DM-101. Happy birthday!
Thanks for this DM-101 demo. Love the fact as a pedal designer yourself you seems to be really excited about this!
Josh has been around long enough to be a treasure now, long live josh and his boss tears.
I completely agree with your thumbnail comment!! The second i saw what it was and what it can do i became overwhelmed with joy. Its the perfect delay for my tastes. Im definitely going to buy one when i can afford it. Boss did a phenomenal job on this pedal
Love my new BOSS space echo. They live up to their name…
This seems to have the same sturdy housing as the space echo. They’ve really been killing it lately.
hey would you say space echo and this unit are different ? I have the re -202
@@gc583 Absolutely. The 202 is a great tape delay emulation. This 101 is a CPU controlled bucket brigade playground. Digital delay functionality with true analog BBD sound/artifacts.
@@EricBeam1313 ha .i ordered the dm- 101 .I m gunna call it my dum pedal.anolog delay. good luck finding the moog delay.
Demo all the delays! I know they're dropping at an insane pace, but it'd be cool to see demos of all of their new delay units. I really enjoy your playing, insights, explanations, and history lessons. More is always welcome!
I love your channel, man. I only own one of your pedals - my v4 Morning Glory that's always on - but watching your love of pedals and seeing you deservedly praise other makers makes me want to buy more of your stuff. That's good business. Also, this pedal is absolutely gorgeous.
Amazing pedal and review. Thank you for reviewing this pedal. I am going to save up fro this lovely machine!
The part where he’s gushing about how great the DM-2 is and then realizes he wasn’t even on the DM-2 mode is a great illustration of how much of this is all in our heads.
Well, maybe partly, but not really. Analog delay sounds fundamentally different than anything digital out there including the so-called ^analog sounding^ digital delays. They have depth, dimension and just a kind of integrity with the guitar signal that is just second to none, period. Just listen to the way the repeats sits on the guitar signal like actual real extensions of the guitar sound, not like most digital delays that simply sit on top of the sound and cannot be as integrated and solid sounding as good analog delays. This particular Boss delay pedal really remind me of my beloved Echo Fix real tape echo unit that I'm using for the past couple of years and love it so much. Mark my words, this delay is going to be out of stock everywhere lol forever.
🤯😭
I did the same. Just made me love this insanity more.
That's where our ears are.
It happens 🎉
I love that you have Travis hanging up back there!
I thought the Space Echoes were perfect, but this seems to be the holy grail of analog delay. With this one you can open the door to the cthulhu universe.
My rationalization for "needing" both is, the Space Echo can be for my Moog DFAM and this new one can be for guitar. See? I "need" both.
@@sabrosapurr Could you say somthing about the biggest differenses betwin this and the RE-202 please? I got that, but are intriged over everyones entusiasme over this one.
@@LeifPalmin I believe the main difference is that the RE-202 is just a replication of the Space Echo. But I believe this new one, the DM-101 emulates a collection of different delays, and adds new functionality that the originals didn't have. But that's the extent of my understanding so far.
@@sabrosapurrclose! The RE-202 is an all digital emulation of the classic space echo, meaning it's essentially code producing the sound - really really well done code that gets seriously excellent results, but still code (unless you want to go for actual tape, there's not really much choice when it comes to emulation though). The DM-101 is all analog signal path, but has crazy digital control to get each of those awesome sounds - there's absolutely no emulation happening here, it's the real thing, with all of the wonderful imperfections that come along with it.
@@achanonymous Ohhhhhh, heck yeah!
Perfect opportunity for the “It’s Korn!” stinger!!
What a heck...Boss strikes again. How can they have produced a so clear and defined delay with some BBDs inside? OMG...😱. By the way, Josh nailed with 7 strings as well. Kudos
BOSS always have been, still are and will always be the BOSS of effects in my opinion.
This is Deeeeelay Perfection, Genius, Brilliance, Again!
Just what I want, need and will eventually have!!
It all just gets better & better, when you think it’s all been pretty much done and there’s not much more you can do to improve & create new effect parameters etc, they simply take things to another whole new level! Their sound production quality, effect quality and manufacturing quality is excellent and has always totally impressed me whether it’s their effects pedals, Roland synths, rack effects units, drums, sound modules, mixers, recorders, the products categories goes on and on, what ever gear I’ve used over the last 35yrs of be a musician, producer, sound engineer has always amazed me with what you can do and achieve with whatever piece of gear I’ve used, I can’t think of a time anything of theirs I’ve ever used has ever let me down, disappointed or failed in anyway, everything has left me basically stunned with what it can do and the possibilities it brings into my creative world making the unthinkable achievable. A world of music, sound & production would be a very different place if Boss & Roland had never existed, they have given a monumental platform to the industry that I think we would all be buggered and up shit streak if they weren’t around. The engineers creating and developing these products are geniuses and every piece of gear has brought a huge smile to my face and get so excitable when using it.
So thank you BOSS & ROLAND CORP.
Josh saying he doesn’t ever want to come out of his basement is so relatable for me, lock me away in my cellar with Boss & Roland gear, throw away the key and never let me out and I’d be happy forever! Even if it was Joseph Fritzel who locked me away.
nahh... mono input.
Oh good grief it sounds so buttery
nice to see Boss bringing much needed tears of joy into the world♡
Such a great video, great great tones and jams start to finish.
Another video of Josh gushing over BOSS? Sure, I’m always up for that ❤
gooooooood
Nice Pedal.
Incredible Musician.
Josh always catches me with a technical heads up. Only to find out that I love his music. Thanks Josh!
Seeing Josh with Aaron Marshall’s sig was a huge surprise and I hope we see more of it
These sounds bring me straight to age 7 and listening to my brother play. The raw, real depths and clarity. Mind blow ing.
Someone ought to do a vid on the impact of affordable electronic instruments around 1979. A top end musician such as Brian Eno could afford super expensive gear throughout the Seventies, but by 1979 even pub bands could afford stuff as the prices came down. Music changed as a result.
There is a documentary called "Synth Brittania" which talks about how a bunch of people in the UK were building their own synthesisers and how the whole DIY electronic movement happened very much like how punk rock had a couple of years earlier. It's a great subject.
You ought to do it.
@@theseaward4613 - I wish I had the background knowledge to do so. If you look, the tech led the development of entirely new music.
I like the look of these, had a dm100 for years, and recently sold it regrettably. Great demo
Got it today and it is KILLER! My very impression hooking it up to a Tele and Princeton. There is ZERO tone/volume change between the dry signal and engaging the delay. NO OTHER delay I ever owned - digital or analog - was able to do this. I owned several Memory Men TT 1100 and the changes to the dry signal always were annoying. Also I never liked how the first echo return is always emphazised.
Anyway, even when sticking to the factory presets for now I was blown away, it's just RIGHT. Somebody thought the lack of tone and hipass controls are a problem....no I'm happy that it's so streamlined because it is just GREAT. The classic bucket brigade delays of the past didn't have tone controls because there is no need for it.
After trying pretty much everything out there in the search of a flexible analog delay with tap tempo and user presets, well this is IT
Cool!
I love the DM-2 and bought the Delay Machine for my birthday as well! Thank you Boss!
thank you boss!!
The design of this pedal is fantastic: Perfect retro look and homage to the original, access to all the options from a VERY clearly laid out panel. Does an awful lot without looking cluttered or being complicated to use. Getting all this right looks easy when someone does it as well as this.
You can't praise Boss enough. Their BR-1600 digital multi track recorder is what took me from being totally lost on guitar to the clouds parting. By writing my own songs with that incredible machine I learned more than years of just jamming cover songs. It had a built in GT-6 Multi-fx unit and a drum machine to boot.
I had a Boss BR532 that I used extensively. That came out prior to the 1600 but had a lot of the same stuff going on. Drum programming, guitar/bass tones, and even a bass simulator for guitar, which was pretty good. Boss makes great gear. This delay is just another in a long list of kick ass stuff.
greatest ever
I really like that they copied the form factor of the DM-1. I actually recognized that when they put out the RE-202. Boss has really been on a roll with their delay pedals.
Yes! Please shoot out all 3 Modern Boss Delays! Anxiously awaiting that video!
Such a great sounding delay, great feature set too! Way to go Boss!
Josh, I’m a huge fan of Adam levy as well. Have you heard the album Neighbors, he did with Anthony Da Costa
I just pre-ordered with Anderson’s :) before I even knew about this pedal I use to imagine a deluxe type DM-2 pedal! Maybe more like the 200 series! Something that could bring modulation, different delay options etc. tap tempo… so when they announced this, I was like off my chair! Nooo waayyyy! They actually created it!! With more!!! Stereo analog delay!!! Plus you get your tape options :) I have never been more excited for a delay than this
How I miss those Friday videos, I mean you still do a great job guys I love the show but naaaaa it was much better those Fridays waiting for the video and love it's ok, but the edition you used to make guys it was soooo cool I wish you did everything just like in the past or maybe I'm just an old dinosaur and I can get the new schedule.
Anyway thanks a lot guys cheers from Mexico, not texting an American haha but a Mexican.
Great job as always. You rock!
The king has spoken! Sire,
Your subjects rejoice that the king is a happy king. Heads across the land look to the heavens, as glorious musical sounds reverberate from shore to shore & South to North, and, to ALL compass 🧭 points. Thank you Josh.
Thank you Boss
This is a magical box and that 7 string sounding awesome on it Josh
I love how a pedal company raves so hard for a competitive product! Says so much about their company. Bravo.
This video just opened up bada$$!! Nice work!
This has gone down to £359 in the UK for January sale! Just ordered from Amazon, free next day delivery at £359 I felt it was a no brainer! I’ve been using a TC flashback 4 since 2014. It’s been a great unit for me but now I feel it’s time to move forward. I pretty much only used the analog & tube settings on the TC and also the 2290! I’m going to grab a 2nd hand Strymon Dig for my digital needs. But yeah this pedal is exciting!!
One of my favorite parts of the boss dd-20 is the headphone jack and hearing things in stereo , especially when you run the two paths with different effects. I actually hit my dd20 third to last in my chain and then I re-circulate back into it after the remaining pedals and it's pretty cool getting its effects to impart on the first path and yet again on the stereo path. Makes for nice Reverby loops in a sort of wet dry setup.
Love you Josh
The DD20 is great and deserved a mention in the intro.
I am 1000000% behind josh using a 7 string more often. This was so rad!!! Love what all you dudes “and dudets” do
I agree, for Josh's, "shoegaze grunge" style, a 7-string really suits. Josh, more 7-string please.
I love the history too…. God they are nice looking units ….all 3 of the new delays are nice x
YES! Please demo the other Boss delays.
Josh, you're just a crazy geek, more than me! I love that. Thanks for being.
I love that boss is putting out analog delays. Why won’t they ie Roland put out any analog synths!
Yes please! I dont think a «juno»would be that expensive/hard to make, because they are based on mass produced chips.. imagine a juno60 with portamento , Aftertouch and analog FX !
Imagine if they had actually done the JDXA right. The analog section of that synth actually sounds amazing.
JHS crocs AND SOCKS are inevitable at this juncture.
Really creative into track man .l bet they do a mini version let's hope lol kind of lost my way with delay hardly use it now but that unit is pretty awesome 😍
Boss delay pedals are just great. I've had several delays from cheap chinese to DOD, Moog or EHX but currently i use the DD-200 on my board because it does the sounds i want the way i want them to be.
i use the dd-200 as well and love it. i also have a boss gt3 that runs with my pedalboard and i use the delay on it with my dd-200 if i want that double delay goin on. sounds insane when you do that with it on tera echo on the dd200
It ain’t cheap but it’s worth the money. Imagine trying to assemble this functionality out of other pedals. It’s really impressive.
Yes please demo demo.
It saves me so much time and money!
Josh needed an "Existential Crisis" stinger for this one.
I’m so glad that Boss have created this. They are and always will be my favorite manufacturer. Boss always push the envelope for creativity while also ensuring that their products are user friendly and diverse. I use my ce-2w more than any other pedal in my collection, because it’s painfully simple and there’s not a bad sound in it. I am happy that this was created as I’ve never seen such a feature rich analog delay. As a lover of analog delay, the genre had become a bit sterile, as nearly every analog delay had either been based on the deluxe memory man or boss dm-2 with minor tweaking. Now we have the capacity to use analog delay in other contexts.
I always come here to get the real scoop on the new stuff. This does look awesome Josh it’s weird to see you with this type of guitar. Don’t know why.😅
Awesome review of an awesome pedal. Would also love to see a demo of the SDE3000.
Wow i can wait to get my hands on that. Absolutely killer
Josh, your Boss demos are best!
Wow the meltdown part is really inspirational. Gonna get me that dm 101 to have some of that feeling
You’ll never guess how the first 20 seconds of this video will go 😂. That crazy beat AND a 7 string on the JHS channel
That is one magnificent machine ! :)
I like that Rob Scallon sent you Aaron Marshal’s guitar instead of his own sig. Now we just need Aaron to send you John Browne’s and then he can send you Keith Merrow’s and so on and so forth.
Loving those yellow crocs....cool Daddio
What a great Pedal. Thanks for this vid.
For $500, it wouldn’t have killed em to have stereo in. I’m baffled why they didn’t do that. They did it for the re-202 in the exact same case format, why not this? In a studio environment you want a string of stereo effects, and delay would never start that stereo chain for me, and probably wouldn’t for most people.
Josh, I’m glad you’re finally excited about stereo effects! It took a long time, but glad we’re here 😃. Lucky cat dual delay with stereo please.
OK, you would practically need to double the number of components. It would have been a lot more complicated to design and more expensive to manufacture.
Something to remember is nearly all "stereo" digital delays and reverbs aren't true stereo at all. They take the stereo dry and pass it through, but they internally sum to mono before creating two instances of the effected signal for a stereo effect on the output side. This is doing the same thing without the stereo dry pass-through. You could just run it full wet in a separate insert channel for the same effect as literally every "stereo" delay pedal. And most stereo pedal boards I've seen, myself included tend to use a delay to split into stereo. I'm increasingly of the opinion you should avoid sending such a signal into another stereo reverb or delay that sums your heavily effected signal to mono before processing it. You get all kinds of issues with phasing and weird frequency buildups.
So Boss clearly did this for a reason.
It would have killed them.
I agree but you’d need to double the number of BBD chips. They should have done it. As a predominantly synth guy this is a huge fail. The synth market is huge. We can hope and wish. The new space ecco 201 thingy seems more popular even though digital.
Hold on a minute, have Roland just bought JHS pedals or something?
Weird seeing Josh playing a 7 string over a trap beat. But awespme
He's trying to be hip with the kids
I thought you were joking when I read this comment while the add played. I’m glad you were not.
April fools? I have a PRS so can’t say sh*t tho.
Hahaha
@@SonOfNiallI don’t think kids listen to trap that much anymore
Josh, you should spend some time with the ROCKMAN STEREO ECHO. I don't know what it is about that delay but it sounds fantastic.
@26:15 Sounds exactly like "Blue Flame Ford" by the band Truly from the 90's. One of my all-time favorite bands.
Absolute Strymon Killer ☠️
Protect this man at all costs
Thanks Josh I ordered it thanks to you I have a life now!
That delay trail lasted longer than Josh's existential crisis.
Exciting pedal release - didn't the DOD Rubberneck also have 1.2ms analog and tap/time divisions (mono)? 😎
Dude the JHS preamp is a must for my next purchase
Josh, is that an avocado on your shoulder or are you just happy to see us! That opening sounded like Linkin Park, U2, and The Cure all rolled into one…very cool!!
Reminded me of P.O.D lol
Love the fact that Josh as a builder and designer gives appreciation to any and all piece of gear. great explanation of the parameters but might have been best to stay 6 string tone wise. Also at times the mod was too sea sick and just washing everything out too much as he was demonstrating modes but his respect and excitement gave integrity to his opinion. Good basement noodler demo, but would have been good to perhaps do that second after a getting lost stoner shoegaze time warp. Appreciate everything Josh offers.
Hi Josh, fantastic pedal! BTW I noticed your DM-2 has an extra output jack. Is that for a remote on/off switch? I used to own one like that.
Sounds awesome! Nice to see someone doing something different with more strings demoing a delay lol. Sub’d
Its almost as cool as YOU, Josh .... what can i say !? Oh - I had both the Chorus Chorus Ensemble AND the DM1 Delay - pre Spoof - and it actually DID cross my mind , how they play on a theme .... Sherlock me ! 😂
The opening jam reminds me of something that Justin Broadrick of Godflesh would write…
I don't buy a lot of pedals upon announcement, But this was an instant purchase.
Boss is just so fucking legendary 🙌
N.B. 28:00 for example, your PiP of the delay pedal could be 4 times the size, twice as wide, and twice as tall, and we might have useful information on the screen, and still be able to see your sick chops.
June 7th was also Prince's birthday! 🎶🎵
Realy sweet, but I got an old DD-20 Giga Delay on Josh's recommendation and still really in love with it, so I think this time I'll save my money 😅
the intro part where the echos sounded like howling dogs had me feeling some kinda way
Fantastic video as always Josh. Do you think the Multi-head mode makes the RE-202 obsolete? I was looking at getting both, so wanted your perspective.
Side note, I love to hear the DM-101 gave you that breath of fresh air feeling. All the best gear does that. :)
Really cool that you tell me about other ppl’s stuff!
I love my JHS stuff, too!
FB-2 educational video, plz?
And, YOUR GUITAR (the white one with all the switches), plz?
Thx!
I have a feeling im going to keep coming back to the DM-101 demos for a while until i finally can buy one. Lol.
Enjoy your nap, thanks for the music
Would love to see a full in depth timeline of the Boss Delay pedals!! Where they split from analog to digital and how they’ve evolved up until now!
Mee too!
I run a 3d rig, no club PA has a stereo board. So, I run mostly dry signal out of preamp to house sound, then the amp, stage sound has the delays and verb. You run your drives into a preamp, di out of that to house, then put the timing effects on the loop of your amp. That gives you a fake "stereo" sound. I designed a mixer pedal "stereo orgy" which would take the left stereo outputs from stereo pedals and mix them into the preamp signal. It was just a small pedal board mixer. I never produced it.
I would love to see that mixer! i have a 3D rig as well, and it's kind of a 3 way setup IN a 3D rig. i. sure you get it... but I would LOVE to try your mixer!
Wow, I'm shook .Not even a moment of silence or an honorable mention for his beloved Flashback x 4
which was on the short list for my last build .For size and form function I went with the Wampler Metaverse .
Delays on my other boards include .
1: Unnecessarily big pedals (Vintage Board) EHX DMM
2: Bootyquie (Boutique Board) Keeley Echos
3: Pedal Cupboard TM (the original of my custom boards ) Boss DD-7 now DD-8
4: Food Pedal Cutting board TM (Chef Bass Board ) JHS Milkman
I love that it's all knobs. I'm starting to realize that screens and menu diving are not for me. I need tactile turny and pushy stuff.
I hate menu diving too but a small LED screen to show the bpm, like the dd20, would’ve been slick
@@G.GordonMidi I could go for that.
Likewise. This is why I didn't run out and buy the EVH SDE 3000 immediately.
was hoping the classic DM-100 would get a shoutout. Not exactly a pedal but it's a Boss Delay Machine. and it rules.
I want this, but I do not need this... Thank you for stepping through the pedal for us so I could live vicariously through you for a bit. It's so good. It even looks good... (sigh)
Hanging out with some 120 film and analog delay, I think I have some 400H in my freezer.
Cool history lesson. Which one of the space echo, the new EVH, or this one is the most versatile.
Josh is one of the best content creators on the web.
greatest ever
Yes please demo the other Boss delays.
It has the Echorec mode. Boom - done. They set the bar.
