Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, Bloody Mary and Ouija are scary and entertaining rites of passage for kids and teens to participate in. But do these games actually work? And why do we love to scare each other so much at sleepovers?

No matter what anyone accuses me of, I absolutely did NOT hide the TV remote in my pocket during Bloody Mary in order to scare Emily
And for context, this is what I thought was an unplugged TV. Thanks for the scare Joe-*Dr.Z*
@@pbsstoried next thing someone's gonna accuse me of pushing the Ouija thingie on purpose. Pure slander I tell you
@@besmart - I mean, I wasn't even thinking that--until you mentioned it, so...
Omg this is brilliant I wish I'd thought of it 😂😂
The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks.
Well, someone had to pretentiously elevate the literary tone.🤪
This looks like it was so fun to make! Happy spooky time, everyone ❤
We had a great time!-*Dr.Z*
@@pbsstoriedHalloween scary Month October 31 2023 🎃 😀
I like seeing the PBS Digital presenters have a sleepover, it'd be fun to see it more often (doesnt have to be a sleepover)! but really perfect for this spooky season!
We need them to have a seance and bring PBS Idea Channel back from the dead
@@Antenox that would be epic
Underrated Sleepover Sequence in a movie has to be ‘Addams Family Values’ where Wednesday Addams takes over the relatively PG Ghost Storytelling Session.
Hell yeah, my history, science, English, and reaction teachers are having a good time
"chemistry"
I would think of Doctor Z more like Literature rather than History, but yeah
@Genzafel True 👍
thanks BTW
this my favourite channel on RUclips rn
@@I.____.....__...__ Which one
As someone who grew up in Catholic education, I can say that the notoriety of the Ouija board and ghost stories just made them all the more appealing.
Telling ghost stories at parties was apparently popular during the Edo period in Japan. But it was supposedly started by samurai as a test of bravery. It was called Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, because they would tell 100 ghost stories in a night.
That sounds like a loooooong night.
The ao andon ritual was always an interesting version of storytelling. Doesn't have to be long stories, but 100 scary tales of every length, as long as 100 candles go out
Sounds more like a test of endurance than bravery...
@@barkingmonkee more of a stretch of imagination to hit at least 99 and lie about the 100th. Which the rumor of the blue ghost is one such story in the lineup
I want more crossovers like that!!
Joe bringing the little brother energy to the group is making me CACKLE. God, this was a great video. I love collabs so much
"Light as a feather, stiff as a board"- the Craft, a great classic movie.
The word "Ouija" is composed of the words for "yes" in French and German.
Yes, but is that intentional? Some claim it is, but there's no proof of that, it could just be a coincidence, especially since there's no reason that would be the name, any connection between its function and the word "yes" or those two specific words.
@@I.____.....__...__Your skepticism is warranted. That story is popular but ultimately a common misconception of the origins of the name. The history of how it was named can be found by Googling the Smithsonian Magazine article 'The Strange and Mysterious History of the Ouija Board' published on October 27, 2013.
Muscle memory & blood flow can have a ghostly feeling. Push out in a doorway then walk away from the door & yours arms rise. Hold a person a few inches from the ground suspended by holding their arms. Let them "sink" into the floor & they'll feel the flow of the carpet surround them as if melting into the floor.
This is adorable and I love it.
Can’t see “light as a feather stiff as a board” wo thinking of childhood and the Craft 💜🧿👻
Dr. Emily you are the best!
What a fun episode! Learning the history of those games felt so personal and eye opening. And a perfect time of year for spooky games! 🎃
There’s just something heart warming ab adults playing spooky games at a sleepover (I say as someone in my 20s)
Luigi wants his board back!
11:00 I got those mints! The actual mints inside are shaped like planchettes and really well flavored.
Can you please do a video about the history of bats bad reputation through cinema, reports of vampire bat rabies outbreaks, and vampires? I think that after the long time of talking about infamous movie monsters, I believe everyone is waiting for a video about the history of dinosaur monster movies and the impact Jurassic Park had on the world. Lastly, I want you to make a video about the alien looking and misunderstood lemur known as the aye-aye and its bad reputation.
This! Bats are actually considered lucky in China because their name sounds like fortune! There's also vampire characters who are intriguing since they can be cured...
I've had plenty of sleepovers growing up, but I haven't ever done any of these spooky activities lol
Just got home from work, with my 'weekend' lining up on Halloween, and here's a wonderfully fun, special new episode of Monstrum. Best day ever.
Loved the collab >.<
It's very nice to see a whole topic broken into parts presented by each one of you. Have a spooky and lovely Halloween and thanks to this great episode!
How do I get invited to one of Dr. Zarka's sleepovers?
I literally asked for more crossovers on the survey! This is perfect :D
i got those ouija board mints in like 2015 and kept the tin. brought it to summer camp with bobby pins and hairties in it because the size was perfect. my assigned roommate was so scared of them she requested to switch rooms. ok.....
Happy Halloween, to Dr. Z. and to all!
This was such a fun cross over episode! Loved seeing everyone and how they all got to contribute something unique to their shows!
This is the PBS crossover we didn’t realize we needed ❤🎉
Very informative. I'd like to have been a fly on the wall at a sleepover with so many doctors. Maybe look into scouting rituals like the dreaded snipe hunt.
I keep coming back to this video because I absolutely LOVE the collaboration! It really feels like a sleep over! 😆😆😆🥰🥰🥰
Perfect video for Halloween!
I'm not scared, I'm sleepy! What!?!?! My eyes are always this wide when I'm sleepy! * shakes with ... uh.. sleepiness *
I did ALL these things. We also would read from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Gah! Now I wanna slumber party!
This was maybe the best episode! I loved the collaboration and it seemed like you all had fun. I didn’t really get to grow up with sleepovers so thank you for teaching me of some of the traditions! 🩷
When your favorite youtubers get together in one video. This is better than an Avengers movie!! 😅
I like the collab with everyone on the channel. It looks it was a lot of fun. 😊
This is such a fun slumber party to have! 👏🏽
10:10 I remember when they tried Ouija in ‘Downton Abbey’. That was interesting.
Oh yes, the fiance left a nice message to the maids.
Fun to see you all together!
Omg, your friends are so well spoken. I love this episode!!
Ultimate crossover of my favourite channels! Amazing! 😄
I would love a Monstrum collab with Jon Solo.
Honestly, you seem like a perfect collab situation.
The best crossover event since Endgame.
If you're ever in Salem, Mass I highly recommend the Salem Witch Board Museum. It's small but worth the visit! The curator knows so much about the history of the Ouija Board and other "talking boards," from their origins in the 19th Century to their popularity during the world wars to the eventual association with the demonic and all the zillions of horror movies that focus on them!
Great fun. Always enjoy your show. Thank you.
Love your takeaways at the end, nice narration!
I’m obsessed with this!!!
We did "light as a feather" in band class when I was in Middle School. It was a type of trust exercise, and even tho we knew the trick, it was still cool to see in action.
Avenger Assemble moment of Storied ❤🔥 Love the concept n at the same time, providing information n knowledge with the same energy n fun
Omg I love Dr. Joe's awesome skelly jam jams. ❤
I'm a practicing witch, but ironically I've never done any of these games or little silly rituals. I remember once when I was a kid that my mom was going to host a Halloween seance for a bit of fun, but my goodness, some of the family members freaked out. You could tell it was just after the Satanic Panic.
I find it ironic both that you never played these games and that I was introduced to them at a sleepover in church. My parents, both very religious, only trusted events sponsored by the church.
@@poonyaTara Strange how life works. haha
Loving the shift Dr Z, very appropriate.
I've had very few sleepovers, and have done none of these games.
1:55 Ooohh I should try burning some driftwood~
2:21 *ah*
What a great team-up!
Great collab
2:46 disappointed to see Monstrum moving to Midjourney images, especially without mentioning/disclosing it in the credits.
I respect the work a lot and I prefer the illustrations from older episodes.
Okay, that was just too much fun.
You can tell we were having a great time!-*Dr.Z*
@@pbsstoried Totally!
I had no idea light as a feather stiff as a board was such an old party game!
Sweet more fate and fable!
This is so cool, I love seeing all of you here
Although, I don’t know the one from Reaction, gonna check it out after this 😊
This was awesome 🤘🏾
🎃 Have a Happy Halloween, Dr. Z and company!
I enjoyed the pbs cinematic universe
Your RUclips channel is absolutely amazing! The content you create is both entertaining and informative,The production quality, creativity, and passion you put into your videos are evident in every frame. keeping me hooked with every video. Keep up the fantastic work, you're doing a fantastic job! 😊👍
3:26 I’m so happy that my friends don’t have to do this to me lol
loved the crossover!
I've seen people play Concentrate but I never heard it had to do with death. My friends were only interested in the color aspect.
This was just about the funniest video on this channel so far
The PBS equivalent of the MCU Avengers all assembling for a fantastic Halloween-themed episode? Count me in!!
Happy Halloween Monstrum!!!
Love the crossover event!
Fun episode!
Love it!
Great video. I’d love it if you covered Sandman Cat Scratch, and thise Halloween feeling games.
Damn, looks awesome!
Ooo, a crossover episode!
So cute!!!
5:07 Dr B won the PJ contest 😍
This is a delight!
Happy Halloween Team Storied!
I'm so jealous of countries that celebrate Halloween. Here, we don't even count it as a holiday (as a country) but many people love to dress up or decorate their house with spooky stuff and so do I.
Happy spooky season 🎃👻💀
ooh crossover episode
no... I don't think I ever did any of this. As a teen we played Axis & Allies and such and once a few years older we drank and played cards.
This was so cute ❤
9:00: Gah! Nobody told me there'd be jump scares in this video.
I played Concentrate at Summer Camp as a kid. I don’t remember anything about it predicting how you would die! In fact, our version ended with a “rope” around your neck that pulled you backwards.
It was through a Ouija board at a sleepover in the late 90s that I found out one of my friends was adopted. Actually, no one present knew. She wasn’t touching the planchette when it spelled out her birth mother’s name, which wasn’t a very common name. To this day, I can’t explain that. (And what a way to tell your friends you’re adopted.) We messed around with the board at a few more sleepovers before my friend who owned the board got too creeped out by it and burned it in her fireplace.
Ha! The Midnight Society used coffee creamer for their magic powder. Slightly less toxic than driftwood. That's really neat though.
Beginning in the 1990s, commentators wrote about perceived new trend of parents endorsing sleepovers for teenagers, with both boys and girls staying overnight together. While some writers decried the trend, others defended it as a safer alternative to teenage dating outside the house.
I loved this special with all the crew! But, honestly, I missed Dr. McT on this one.
Anyone else surprised that there hasn’t been a Monstrum episode on The Boogeyman yet?
I also first played concentrate during catholic school recess. ❤
Spiritual version of 3-2-1 countdowns 😂
Wonderful stuff! 🎃👻☠
Goosebumps never lie
Ngl it looks kinda fun.
Loved this!
Also I can't remember a Ouija board being in Thir13en Ghosts which means it's time for a rewatch! Happy Halloween :)
It's in the 1960 film for sure.
I don't remember it being in the recent version, even though that's what she referenced.
I remember on my first slumber party we tried to play "Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board". It was hilarious. We never did manage to lift anyone up! I think we spent 15 whole minutes, changing the person to be lifted, and one of my friends kept saying "We're doing this wrong! We have to do it like this!" lol
Ah yes, to contact the True Louigi!
Love the phone. Gotta get one.
