ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE
From creator Michael Schur (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Master of None”) comes a unique comedy about what makes a good person. The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, “House of Lies,” “Veronica Mars”), an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife, and thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place (which is definitely where she belongs). While hiding in plain sight from Good Place Architect Michael (Ted Danson - “Cheers,” “CSI” - in an Emmy Award-nominated performance), she’s determined to shed her old way of living and earn her spot.

@@gabrielrangel956 whose quotation is this? I really like it :D
@@doraweltschmerz5833 Sartre
@@gabrielrangel956 WE ARE ALL CORPSES! Who haven't yet begun to decay!
This is the perfect type of content to have on the channel! It helps the audience have an even clearer understanding of the different philosophies and ethical questions the show provides.
I would love to see more!
Yep, seconded.
Tangential learning
Apparently there's a book called the good place and philosophy that covers all the philosophy the show touches upon
Ok now, Micheal Schur do a show but for quantum mechanics as the subject matter.
It would really help me out.
Sigh. It wouldn't work. Physics isn't a silly, trivial subject like moral philosophy. 😁
Quantum mechanics certainly broke my brain long ago and it hasn't been the same since.
It's funny. I've used physics to comprehend how free will and destiny can exist at the same time.
@@mouseboyny I believe that's called inertia.
@@michaelcreek3813 Actually, the concept that I was using has to do with electrons and vectors, but inertia might be an interesting metaphor.
Check out PBS SpaceTime. They talk about it a lot and I believe they have a playlist of their episodes on it.
This is why everyone hates moral philosophy professors.
No, this guy is great. He knows how to break things down in terms simple enough for the average 18 year old product of the American educational system to understand. That's quite an accomplishment. Though, I'll have to admit, if I ever met up with such a rigid Kantian as Chidi, I would be very tempted to put him out of the world's misery.
It takes some kind of dumbash to not realize that I understand it's a joke from the show. Two of you so far. In future I'll preface all my posts with disclaimers about what I know and don't know so even dumbashes will understand when I'm stepping outside of the inside jokes to comment on the video itself.
@@blindleader42 you don't get the joke, the joke gets you.
silem arod,
If that's the story you want to tell yourself, be my guest. Your opinion is of no consequence to me. And if you mean for your post itself to be a joke, then you can add it to the list of jokes you imagine I don't get, because it doesn't fly in print with no context.
@@blindleader42 still not getting the joke...
It's better translated as a leap *into* faith
It is so hard to be ur friend
it is so hard to be ur friend
Good one😂
you remembered!
Such a classic quote from Chidi and Micheal
Thanks for confirming Chidi is primarily a Kantian, i've been saying for the whole series is that the source of most of his anguish is how incompatible the Kantian paradigm he follows by default is with the other ideologies he juggles and also just living life pragmatically in general. Kant died a pissed off, antisocial wretch, angry at society slowly drifting into demented madness, plagued by the same stomach pains Chidi often experiences. His philosophy be a good model for a categorical imperative of morality, but definitely not a practical working definition for anyone who wants to stay happy or live a fruitful life.
And I had an ice cream! Your theory is much cooler though.
I’ve had Dr. Todd May as a professor, and he’s fantastic! He’s incredibly entertaining and a genuinely nice dude
I would love to take a class with him. I loved his interviews with Marc Evan Jackson on the Good Place podcast.
@@Echo43 I know sometimes he does summer courses at Clemson. Maybe you could see if you could apply! Additionally, if you’re an older person you can attend Clemson classes for free (though without college credits).
‘I’ll say this to you, my friend, with all the love in my heart and all the wisdom of the universe: Take it sleazy.”
I haven't gone through the comments yet, has anyone made the "This is why everyone hates moral philosophy professors" joke?
EDIT: why yes, they have. I love this fandom.
I have watched and re watched all four good place seasons 8 times. AND I NEVER GET ENOUGH OF IT! ITS THE PERFECT SHOW!!
I have too! I’m about to start my 9th time!
That time everyone was Michael
Don't you mean Janet?
I ment that Michael had existential crisis and also pushed down his feelings. And also many people can relate
All the time. CONSTANTLY! fun fact that is one of Chidis lines
Chidi is a Kantist. This explains a lot actually.
I legit lived the mini philosophy lessons I got because of this show, and now even after it has ended I'm still getting those lessons!
This is forking great. Please continue these! Thanks Dr. Todd!
I've been watching the Crash Course Philosophy series and then this happened. My meaningless life is now complete.
And it is still meaningless. Bravo Sir
@@zapkvr i disagree completley
At age 18, I kind of decided "Does life have a point? I don't know. Does there have to be for life to mean something? Does life have to mean something? No and no. I don't know what's after this, there may be nothing after this and I may never know, so I'm done wasting mental energy on it. Fork it, Imma just live however way makes me and those around me the happiest possible while we're here in our cute little speck of the universe.
Our very own Chidi to explain things to us!! Thank you.
I have existential ocd where these kinds of questions comes, and never goes out of my mind. This helped me calm my anxiety-
Um yass this is what i want! I’ve been looking for a good book on philosophy since this show started (like a philosophy 101) but this is even better cuz it takes the dilemma’s from the show! Awesome!
Try Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. Not as entertaining as the Good Place but still a good place to start
The podcast Philosophize This is amazing as well!
1:53 Having Jean-Paul Sartre say "Look on the one side" made me laugh and I'm not ashamed of it
Thank you for making this video! Existentialism is probably the branch of philosophy I know the least about, most likely because I've been avoiding a Micheal style crisis all these years. I'm not sure I understand Sartre any better now, but at least your video has helped me dip a toe experimentally into his dangerous waters.
Really appreciate this! This is what TV dramas should be like!
Please keep doing these!
We need more of these kinds of videos
I love that this show is popularizing philosophy and putting out these educational resources.
This was great! More, please!
Listen!!! I'm in a philosophy class now because on my 3rd yr in college my political studies professor made us watch the trolley problem clip from this show and i watched the series after that and then i just became interested in philosophy and i'm a nerd now
Oh good god, please make this a new regular series!
I read Todd May's book after watching this episode. It was absolutely incredible. I'm so excited that he's doing these videos!
Nice! Which book was it? He has some great philosophy lectures I’ve seen on RUclips
I like this not too long and complicated but explains the logic behind the philosophie within the show
Heck yeah, more of these please!
Please make more videos like this! Help us learn about the philosophy behind the script!
Perfect playlist.
yesssss please do more of these
oh my god I was just wishing someone would make philosophy lessons using examples from the good place!!! I seem to enjoy learning about philosophy everywhere else rather than in philosophy classes so yeah this is kinda great
Please do more of these!
ooh I love this! Philosophy is my jam.
I love this and I want more!
I LOVE THIS PLEASE CONTINUE
This is actually so helpful!!!! Helped me write an essay about ethics!!!
Beatiful! Please more like this!
Oh I saw this in my suggestions and had to watch it even though I was already watching a different video. Oh well that one can wait. Existential philosophy was my favorite class in college. Also shortest test. 1 question.. 1 word question.. "Why?" And the class panics. Imagine an entire room of Chidis level of panic. It was amazing. I am pretty sure someone threw up. No final can cause crisis like the class on existentialism. Ha! I often miss those days.
I took a class on philosophy in high school. Wasn’t my favorite but it was interesting to discuss different ideas of morals and thoughts on life. This show gave me a good perspective of moral philosophy but on a sitcom.
Hah! nerd

So beautiful

Very fitting. 👌👍
It disturbed me when I began to identify with existentialists when I studied Hispanic literature. Exams were already depressing far less for the authors we studied
How do you tag someone because @Daniel Howell needs to see this asap! Great video!
Best tv show since Pushing daisies. Its a work of art

Now, there's a philosophy of despair. 😋
Hahahahaha

i hope y'all bring him back if the show discusses nihilism in depth :) Nietzsche is my homie
Now I Knw that professor’s class is interesting based on his earing alone
So I'm not depressed, I'm a motherforking philosopher.
I want to discuss philosophy with this dude all day long.
Invisible man good book related to existentialism
Damn Philosophy!
This is like a Cole's Notes version of SciShow (or SciShow Psych, sorta), but in the context of the show. I like it. Not that any of this matters anyway.
There is an issue with not dealing with problems, but the idea that repressed feelings is harmful or a person needs to vent, is contrary to evidence based psychology. Instead the important thing is to reinforce desired responses and behaviors, through practice snd repetition, as well as reflection on goals. This is the basis of the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do
It's a cruel twist worthy of The Bad Place crew how much the moral philosophy guy looks like Florida's Rick Scott.
To question if life has meaning is not a symptom of clinical depression. Things like a loss of joy in previously enjoyed activities, are a symptom of depression.
You gave the Sartre animations his goofy eyes!
his earring completes this video
Does anyone else see that Dr Todd May DOESN'T BLINK?!!!
Throw in a quick book promo while you're at it :D
Hah. Evidently a writer on the show read his book “Death” and said they should consult him. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the show’s writing is influenced by May’s writing
The subtitles is too fast. Please fix it
maybe try watching at a slower speed? takes a little more time, tho.
@@keauxgeigh They specifically mean that the subtitles appear about 1-2 seconds ahead of the speech in the video. They aren't exactly fast, but out-of-sync, so the video can be hard to follow with the subtitles alone. Sorry if this wasn't helpful!
@@vale.c.g ah, I see. in that case, I recommend speeding it up so fast that the timing error isn't noticeable, lol! (just kidding, I apologize if I'm wasting your time)

How can we make up our own purpose if there is no free will?
Watch episode 7 season 3 " The worst possible use of free will" it provides quite a few answers from the writers' point of view and it is pretty good
In short : To be or not be that is that question
Subtitle is faster than the video...😭
Most parts of death and existentialism don't really bother me. Other than the being forgotten thing, that one stings.
Counterpoint: time is non-linear, and choice an illusion.
Counter-Counterpoint: We experience time linearly, and choice doesn't mean we get to make it more than once.
Immanuel Kant was a real piss-ant, who was very rarely stable... Everybody, now.

Now we're getting somewhere. He definitely was a boozy beggar.
Plato, they say, could put it away. Half a crate of whiskey every day.
I still don't understand.
Great! maybe you can traduce into spanish... so more people can understand the video :D
So entering this kind of heaven is based on how altruistic one is?
He's so focused he's not blinking
So... Maybe philosophers are just depressed, but they pretend that they aren't because... reasons?
Or, depression is a logical function of the human brain to make us think of solutions to soul crushing problems.
Except we also create the problems
Grunthos The Flatulent:
Well, people like suffering; so, maybe we are also trying to fulfill people's sexual satisfactions and desire for martyrdom. While on the flip side, allowing sadists to torture in a socially acceptable fashion.
