@@jamieschmidlin1841 if you do the audible the footnotes are some of the best parts. They are read by different cast members from the show. I agree when reading they could interrupt the flow.
I've never seen a "sitcom" go to so far and so deep! Every season is a reinvention or two or 826. The last few episodes alone could be subject to a whole essay. Chidi's monologue to Eleanor is sublime! To end the show about questioning morality on a budist, poetic tone about the ephemerous nature of life... That seemingly nihilistic, yet profoundly touching view of our place in the Universe is very, very hard to be done again in any TV show.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it sure deserves a place between the fictional shows that tackle complicated, large, real life issues intelligently, like Andor and Severance (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
That "forking" twist was everywhere! I couldn't escape it no matter where I was online. Even when they didn't spoil it, Kristen Bell's expressions from the same scene were on countless thumbnails! It was like the new "Sixth Sense" or "Oldboy"! But at least it got me to watch the show which is even better than people hyped it up to be!
I didn't know a thing about the show and it's twists. By the time it came I was so involved in the comfortable plot and characters that it took me weeks to like and eventually love and admire what it did. Usually I'm turned on by a sudden change in genre or plot, but they built such a great show that I was, for the first time, annoyed at it being clever on me.
Fortunately, nothing about knowing the twist ahead of time makes the show any less good, so nothing is lost. Turns out, when a story is good, then it's a good story, and it doesn't matter whether or not you know ahead of time what's going to happen.
Thanks for covering this show. I definitely wasn't expecting that twist at the end of Season 1, and it changed everything about how I perceived the show before.
I had actually stopped watching the show in the middle of season 1, thinking it was a little boring, and then I had the season 1 twist spoiled for me a few months later, and it was so intriguing that it got me to start watching again! Now I consider the show one of my favourites of all time and have rewatched all the seasons multiple times. I can't believe what I almost missed out on!
I only recently learned that the show put out a podcast while the last couple of seasons were airing, so I’ve been listening to that while on walks with my dog and it’s a blast! I have asked this exact question!!! I mean, what was the pitch? “Ok, so it’s a comedy show about moral philosophy. These losers end up in fake heaven that’s actually hell, and we watch them learn to become better people. One of them is a philosophy professor who nags them all the time. Another is a criminal from Florida, another a jealous rich shit, and the main character is a trashy chick.” Without having actually seen the masterful result, it doesn’t sound like a promising premise!
I will freely admit that I gave The Good Place a shot because of its two main cast members. I quickly found it to be funny, smart, a bit insane, and after the end of season 1 - unpredictable. It is good at making you think one moment and making you laugh a few moments later and all the while, making you like the cast. And I can also say it gave me a very fun character for a D&D game - a monk based of Jason. GM's pitch was 'a touch comedy but you work to collect debts from people who made a contract with hell.' Most of the others were fairly serious meanwhile I'm going 'so I was teaching the demons how to do the Thriller dance.....' and ended up being the comedy relief the game needed. The other upside of The Good Place is it got me to give Brooklyn 99 a shot and I enjoyed that greatly too.
This was a really great show, and my favorite part was how the moral and the moral matched up. It was so cool that the philosophical concepts the show introduces, become part of the plot so the audience sees it in action. It was so unique and cleverly written.

This is a really great evaluation and I loved this show for all the reasons that you outlined. There are so many moments that still stick with me. It was beautifully executed.
I'm rewatching the show on blu-ray, which has extended versions of the episodes, and the additions, especially from season two onwards, really improve the philosophical explorations. I recommend it over the broadcast cuts.
One show that did approach moral philosophy in a similar structure is the Catalán show, Merlí. Set in a public high school in Barcelona, the main character was an iconoclastic philosophy teacher. The show followed a similar format where each episode was structured around a particular philosopher, is taught in the class on screen, and all of the show's drama is consistent with that episode's lesson, while following the overall character arcs in the show. It isn't executed as deftly as The Good Place, but it's still very compelling television that's very well done.
They would have taken one look at things, set all their notes on fire, and thrown themselves over a cliff. Some days, I think that’s the example I want to follow. 😅
I don't think they'd have been very impressed with us 🙀 probably would've thought they went backwards instead of forwards in time. Cuz how could we have possibly gotten so dumb and so abundant 😹 ~🧡🦇
Reading through the comments here, much love to all, I found that I very much appreciate that I watched the first season of the good place with no spoilers what so ever and that is what was good for me. My mom, a very devoted religious person dropped the series after learning the characters were infact not where they thought they were . I thought maybe I could connect with mom over this show but it's ok that we did not. I love this show no reason, I just do.
I can accept this it goes along with my theory that Janet is God. Which Janet? All of them! Which God? All of them! But who created Janet? Jeremy Bearimy!
I would say you're cooperative until you have a sense of belonging and that's the reward, because that's a basic need. If your group fails you, you might stop being cooperative, but it won't make you lose your principles. Unless too many have failed you, then you question your views in general. What the show painfully lacked was mental issues that have a profound effect on behaviour yet it was completely ignored. The gossipy guy for example might've been an oversharer who didnt get enough attantion in childhood. We also know that narcissism is caused by trauma/neglect and it's not a choice (and it's also a spectrum with everyone on it). (It would also be fun to put Chidi into a room with a soldier with ptsd to discuss the connection between character and losing sht and see if he comes out alive.) And don't forget about wrong perception when we simply misunderstand someone and try to force them into boxes and distort everything to prove our initial theory. People can't even see the most obvious things. So I find the idea troubling that the whole show approched human behaviour from philosophical point of view and labelled every action and reaction as a morally good or bad "choice". Although it admitted that their personalities and choices were determined by their childhood, what's more they didn't even changed a bit until they died, it still judged them as if they were aware of these impacts or how they were percieved by others. (As if there was any kind of system in their head that recieves inputs like feedbacks and has an equation, formula of the "perfect self" you can put them into. There's only two systems similar to that and those are honest, straight communication and therapy. Formula is still unknown, that's why philosophy exists. And majority of people has no access to any of these. So they live their lives based on their own perceptions and conclusions.) In the second round however there was no background at all, we knew nothing about the deliquents' past, what were their motives, thinking patterns, beliefs etc. The main four (six) characters weren't even experts of human behaviour yet they felt authorized to "diagnose" and try to change the deliquents without any kind of knowledge, simply based on their impressions and concepts about what a person should be like. And that lead to their constant failures. (For example the idea to find an authority figure to deliver their narrative instead of making the effort to understand the person who might've easily been repeatedly failed by authority figures and lacking trust in them is painfully dumb.) The moral of the show should've been that you shouldn't label people as bad or good based on how much you like them or how much you can connect to them, because it makes the whole scenario look like a shallow, suburban soap opera. There were no real conflicts or sins, it was all just gossipping, thinking in stereotypes and not liking people who trigger our insecurities. Actually the only sin was the whole conspiracy against these people. Which might be okay from a demon, but when humans started to play god, it became the devil's temptation they couldn't resist. When Eleanor tortured her unsuspecting ex was painful to watch and was even a wrong conclusion since she's improved because she found someone she could connect to, not because she was tortured. Not hardships make you improve but connections. It blows my mind how the writers could think it's okay to manipulate anyone's life and avoid straight and honest communication which could reveal the misconeptions and misunderstandings on both sides. The whole story was based on the assumptions that they have both perfect perception and the perfect formula, which is insane. In my eyes they all failed playing god, putting themselves above other people and making decisions above their heads. They all should've ended up at the bad place.
Ah, you might think so, but ‘moral desert’ only has the one. This ‘desert’ is an archaic word, derived from the same root as ‘deserve’, and so is pronounced like ‘dessert’ (food) while spelled like ‘desert’ (sandy cactus place). How’s that for pedantic!
What do you mean that this won’t spoil the experience? Literally the first thing you say is that they come back to life at one point. It spoils the entire Judge plot from that season.
Haha, there are even philoophe jokes that are clevr , like annoyed by chido calling him aristotle, or jokes as aristotle as unrealistic purist . An i wish , like i love jason, but also i wish he was more explored there. And we get more to see what tahani sees, unconventional wisdom that isnt overthinking and being truely now. If underused. Like the reason why michael and jason are so diferent, becaus michael is overthinking and jason, is not. Also i love chidis chilli scene.
Fun fact : the etymology of the word "moral" came from latin through french, and then the two senses of the word works also in french, that facilitate the comprehension of the video ^^
I had to take moral ethics for my degree. I hated the class because he was showing how you could justify the worst acts behind a moral theory. I argued with the professor in pretty much every class. I was shocked when I got an A. I enjoyed ethics in this show way more. Not aggravating at all.
@@VagueAcquaintance Could be guts. I liked debate in High school but sometimes, I wish it was easier for me to just walk away from people that say stupid things. I do have a talent for making people laugh while I'm disagreeing with them. Honestly, I think its the only reason people don't get mad at me.
From Wikipedia: 'Desert (/dɪˈzɜːrt/) in philosophy is the condition of being deserving of something, whether good or bad. It is sometimes called moral desert to clarify the intended usage and distinguish it from the dry desert biome. It is a concept often associated with justice: that good deeds should be rewarded and evil deeds punished.'
REally nice video, although I disagree on the part with 'working throgh' and TV: TV facilitated the transition of moral humans to a-moralic beings by disconnecting the agent completly from the outcome while still being able to 'feel' like a moral being. If one can not understand (or has complete misconceptions) about their environemnt, they can not estimate the outcome of their action, and therefor waive every poosibility of morality.
The overarching moral claim of the show was that we all have an imperative to help everybody else become their best selfs. No matter how long it takes, no matter how many times they fail.
@Pillar of Garbage you should! I don't know if it's your thing but it's this musical comedy and one of best depictions of mental illness out there. Especially for such a stigmatised diagnosis. It full of heart and really funny and every character is great.
I liked the video but everytime the Moral + Moral appeared on screen I got confused, I think it would have been better to find synonyms for them that were different.
@@VagueAcquaintance TL;DR - It's liberal from a leftist POV as it rejects revolution. Reform is a common goal in Michael Schur shows, so it probably limited the sorts of discussions The Good Place could have. It could also be liberal from a conservative perspective because it advocates for things they don't agree with. --- Full argument below --- It is liberal in a more interesting way than it being "woke" or vaguely progressive. Leftists can see the show as liberal as it rejects an overthrow of the universe's moral system despite recognizing its inherently broken nature. See, Chidi and the gang slap a band-aid on the old system via a waiting room instead of changing how points are calculated or calling that system into question. This could be compared to the leftist-liberal dichotomy of revolution versus reform. Leftists often want to overthrow the current system when they recognize its inherent rot, while liberals wish to reform it. Think of the Russian Revolution versus Bernie Sanders wanting to change tax law while still keeping capitalism. So, The Good Place's rejection of revolution to solve the universal moral system can be seen as liberal from a leftist point of view. This reform/revolution struggle also occurs in other Michael Schur shows. Parks and Rec is firmly reformist and Brooklyn 99 took a reformist approach to addressing corruption and BLM within its fictional police department. The Good Place is where the struggle between reform and revolution is most obvious, though, and it probably did limit the philosophical discussions the show could have. Imagine a scene where everyone argues what the new moral system should look like, and there's a firm divide between starting from scratch and tweaking what exists now. That could be an interesting discussion, but because Schur is firmly reformist, it couldn't happen. It could also be seen as "liberal" from a conservative point of view, but that is much less interesting. Basically, because the show likes diversity, gay people, talks about climate change, etc. (things conservatives don't care for and see as liberal causes), it is liberal to a conservative.
@@renatocorvaro6924 I love how the comment you replied to is clearly a far-leftist that despises liberals, and your first response is to have a dig at conservatives.
@@hoominbeeingI don't really see anything in the show that a far-leftist wouldn't agree with? One of the main problems of the afterlife in the show is that it doesn't account for there being no ethical consumption under capitalism, which is definitively not a moderate left standpoint. There are plenty of things in this show a conservative would disagree with, though. So I also would assume OP is a conservative 😭😭

Thank you for covering the show, and Take it Sleazy.
I love this show. It’s one of my favorites of all time
One show that did approach moral philosophy in a similar structure is the Catalán show, Merlí.

I kept rewatching this show. Stargate and The Good Place is my comfort shows.
The Good Place is an amazing show, we can learn a lot from it! We can all try to be better people every day.
Great video :)
I would have loved to hear what these ancient philosophers would have to say about the way we all handled Covid…
They would have taken one look at things, set all their notes on fire, and thrown themselves over a cliff. Some days, I think that’s the example I want to follow. 😅
I don't think they'd have been very impressed with us 🙀 probably would've thought they went backwards instead of forwards in time. Cuz how could we have possibly gotten so dumb and so abundant 😹

The Good Place is, indeed, The Shirt. It is one of the few shows I can go back to re-watch and enjoy as much as I did the first time I saw it.
This is one of the best shows that I have ever seem. It’s clever and funny light and philosophical at the same time
Glad this was suggested :)
The Good Place is SOOOO good! If you haven't watched it, you need to start!!
🤣
Great video
I just finished it and I love this show
Loved this!!
TGP is one of my favorite shows. It's absolutely brilliant.
Oh and thanks to this show now I see a lot of people in my life as demons, the resemblance is striking.

Dessert has two 's'es. I like to think "Strawberry Shortcake" as a mnemonic
Awesome vid despite my pedantry.
I just go with “desserts” is just “stressed” spelled backward. 🙂
What do you mean that this won’t spoil the experience?
Literally the first thing you say is that they come back to life at one point. It spoils the entire Judge plot from that season.
I love that show so so much
Haha, there are even philoophe jokes that are clevr , like annoyed by chido calling him aristotle, or jokes as aristotle as unrealistic purist .

Vraiment un fait amusant!

I had to take moral ethics for my degree. I hated the class because he was showing how you could justify the worst acts behind a moral theory. I argued with the professor in pretty much every class. I was shocked when I got an A. I enjoyed ethics in this show way more. Not aggravating at all.
I love that you argued your opinions and beliefs, that takes a lot of guts
@@VagueAcquaintance Could be guts. I liked debate in High school but sometimes, I wish it was easier for me to just walk away from people that say stupid things. I do have a talent for making people laugh while I'm disagreeing with them. Honestly, I think its the only reason people don't get mad at me.
dessert, as in "yum-yum," has two s's. Your wrote desert, as in tumbleweeds and cacti.
I'm actually re-watching the good place.
Was the headline “moral desert” rather than “moral dessert” accidental or ironic?
There I was thinking it was a comedy show .
OH MY GOD DOUG FORCETT IS CHUCK
Could have watched at least another 90 minutes of this video
Good news - more on the good place coming shortly!
YASSSSS THE GOOD PLACE #1 🫡🚨🫵
The morals in this show are overly simplistic. They come down to "everything in moderation" which has obvious reductios.
That's an extremely reductive view of it.
Yep, esp with regard to vegoonism. I see you're a fellow Earthling Ed and Avi enjoyer. Are you part of the AY community?
Have you watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend?
I have not!
@Pillar of Garbage you should! I don't know if it's your thing but it's this musical comedy and one of best depictions of mental illness out there. Especially for such a stigmatised diagnosis. It full of heart and really funny and every character is great.
Too bad it's on Netflix....a not so Good Place a lot of us left after the BS they kicked off with the "anti-sharing" stuff happened.
I liked the video but everytime the Moral + Moral appeared on screen I got confused, I think it would have been better to find synonyms for them that were different.
Engagement comment
Hi
Hi!
Hopefully this comment helps your video
Thank you!
the politics and sociology of the series is dodgey tho, and super limited by the liberal-ness (pejorative) of the showrunner imo
Turns out, "be good to other people" rubs American conservatives the wrong way for some reason.
How is it liberal, genuinely asking to ur opinion
@@VagueAcquaintance TL;DR - It's liberal from a leftist POV as it rejects revolution. Reform is a common goal in Michael Schur shows, so it probably limited the sorts of discussions The Good Place could have. It could also be liberal from a conservative perspective because it advocates for things they don't agree with.
--- Full argument below ---
It is liberal in a more interesting way than it being "woke" or vaguely progressive.
