    sweat the onion first with the spices, then add the meat to brown, then the beans and tomato and let it stew until the beans are cooked. it will really lift the flavour profile. i'd probably use a brown onion instead of a white one too. way more flavour.

    Would recommend adding some lime juice or pickeld jalapenos for some tanginess.
