    I started out with Winsor green many years ago and was 'romanced' into eight different greens which I rarely ever use. Glad I bought small tubes. Daniel Smith has amazonite green which mixes really well with many sedimentary colours and looks fantastic on rough paper. It will be my only holdout in the long run. This is an excellent video.

      Wow - eight greens? Romance can do that to you😀 Glad that you have reduced it to one. Thanks for watching my video and the comment. Happy painting.

    It’s funny but everything you’ve said in this video, became true for me (through trial and error). I thought I was crazy because other RUclipsrs have very different ideas about greens and swatches.
    I started painting in April this year - bought all the different greens then eventually deciding I didn’t need most of them, did all the swatches then realised I didn’t need to refer to those charts. Now I mix my greens directly on the palette and paper (without trying too hard to duplicate any particular shade). I’ve also found out how to get the dark colour (viridian + red) and I do it frequently when I need a dark colour. I have come to enjoy mixing colours to get other colours. Now the only ready-made greens I use are Viridian and Sap green.
    Thanks for your video. It’s a validation for me in my effort to learn to paint with watercolours. I’m looking forward to your other videos.

      That's great! I am glad you found my video and that it has validated your thoughts about mixing greens and colour swatches. Good luck with your watercolour and let me know anytime if there is a video topic about watercolour painting you would like to see.
      Cheers

    Best video yet Charles! Oil and Texture painter myself but same applies. I just put every colour on the pallet and mix them on Canvas until I'm satisfied. Usually with a knitting needle. Cheeeeeers!

    No green on my palette. A few tubes in my stash from workshop requirements, on rare occasions I might get a dab from one. Never travel with a green. One of the best lessons I ever had, in an early workshop: mix 50 greens without using green. What a revelation! And as I know now, colors are all relative...on its own it may not look like green, but near other colors it appears green. Great video Charles! Looking forward to one on colorful blacks. (If I missed it, let me know!)

      Thanks Sandra. Yes green isn't necessary to have in the palette, but I do find it useful. As you know there are many many ways to get greens. No, I haven't done the video on blacks yet. One day 😉

    I always select at least two of the greens below for my palette as they are all great mixing greens: Phthalo Green (blue shade) PG7, Phthalo Green (yellow shade)PG36, Green Gold PY129, or Perylene Green PBk31. The latter two are, technically, a yellow and a black pigment, but they are very green. I agree that Phthalo Green (blue shade) is the one that can mix just about any other green hue.

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  4 года назад +1

      Good choice. I actually have two greens in my palette too: pthalo green (or something similar) and turquoise green light. At the end of the day, as you know, no matter what you chose,as long as they work for you and you don't waste all the space in your palette with 10 different greens😆. Thanks for watching Jael.

    I've got good ol faithful, phthalo green (blue shade) by Daniel Smith on my palette, but I do not find it gives me the best black. I always have to add a tinge of yellow. I still mix most of my greens with blues and yellows. However, I have olive green by Mission Gold and I love it. It is just so pretty I don't want to waste it. Lol.
    I have cobalt teal by M.Graham, I believe and it is another favorite. Just the most perfect turquoisy hue.
    I LOVE color charts. I love making them, and I love using them for reference. I have a kids art class and that is the first thing we will be doing our first day of class. I would have shared this video with them, but can't because of the movie clips.
    I just found your channel and love it. I love the humor and short movie clips. :)

      Thanks DeliriArt - it is fantastic that you teach kids art. I am a great believer in the importance of making art pat of kids life. The world needs more artists and appreciators of art and this is where it starts. I have used some M Graham paints, but haven't tried the Cobalt Teal - I may check it out as I do love a good teal :) Thanks again for watching

    Hi Charles -Thank you for a great video...
    I don’t use a green in my palette. I do have in my palette Daniel Smith Cobalt Turquoise which is a dull green blue that granulates heavily. It mixes beautiful greens. But I’ve found that I mix most greens with yellows and blues. That way there’s a more natural look and I can vary the mixes to create lots of variety in my green washes.

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching rtmca - Yes, blue and yellow mixtures can also give beautiful and obviously varied greens as you point out. Something I haven't even touched on yet in my videos and something you have brought up, is how us watercolours choose our colours and what we look for. I am a great fan of granulation, so understand using your Daniel Smith Cobalt Turquoise.

  • @tmikeporter
    @tmikeporter 2 года назад +1

    Have you ever tried Pthalo Turquoise? That can make some powerful colors when you need them. I use Viridian and Pthalo G in my palette as standards. I've also tried Cobalt Turquoise, but not the light version. I did the color charts when I was first starting out as a learning exercise for mixing, but no longer need to do it for the reasons you state. Cheers

      @charles-sluga  2 года назад

      Yes Pthalo Turquoise is another beautiful colour... so many:)

    Watched this again, and I noticed the pencil drawings in your example paintings. My drawing skills to represent people could use a lot of improvement, I can draw buildings OK and can deal with perspective but people, animals...they need to be improved, Perhaps a future video on this subject?

    Viridian is my only green , but oddly enough not for mixing greens - I use it for greys :) and I do have a tube of AS Australian leaf green which I sometimes use in mixes...

      @@charles-sluga haha sometimes , yes, but mixed with cobalt or cad red. Was it Pthalo green you use or Pthalo Green BS? It looks like a much stronger colour than viridian...?

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  5 лет назад

      It is Pthalo Green Blue shade....the advantage too is that it is cheaper than Viridian, but does the same job mixing wise.

    Love your videos Charles appreciate the time, you go to a lot of trouble to make them uniquely you. Makes me laugh. Thanks for sharing your miles on the brush. I did those squares once waste of time like you say, it was only to help procrastinate in doing a watercolour painting which I do a lot, procrastinate that is. Perelyne is my dark. Maybe you could talk about that procrastination, resistance or is it fear that keeps you from painting sometimes??

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks Craig. I appreciate your comments and support of my channel. I am also glad you agree with me on the squares😄. Yes, the procrastination,fear etc regarding painting is a big one and a battle that I continue to have. I do intend on making a video about that, but it will be down the track as it is a big topic and I have yet to come up with a filming idea for it... but I will. Cheers.

    Great video Charlie! I usually use viridian, mainly because it's the only green I have besides Sap. Do you have a preference for Yellows?

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Nakiya, thanks for watching. I use Cadmium yellow pale (Winsor and Newton), but it has the warmth of most cadmium yellows in other brands, and I use a bucket of Raw Sienna. I also use Indian Yellow every now and again. That's just what I use though and I would suggest that you have a warm and a cool yellow in your palette for more versatily.

    Great advice, I've felt guilty not doing those little squares thinking it was some right of passage to becoming an artist. I have 4 greens in my palette, phathlo green blue and red shade, plus sap and deep sea green. Sap green, my lazy option, probably needs to go but which phathlo?
    Thanks for refreshing green

      Just love that film... I enjoy films which is obvious from the number of movie clips I use in my videos, but that one is in my top ten.
      Vincent Vega, my man from Amsterdam. I off to Amsterdam later in the year and I just have to use that line while there😂
