The trick with this pandemic times is we DO shop more cause we have more time on our hands BUT we end up with clothes that we can't wear because we got nowhere to go! Anybody experienced that recently?...
I've been shopping very hopefully due to the pandemic - futuristic Paco Rabanne's, dreamy Cecilie Bahnsen's & contemporary Bottega's. Like seriously, what kind of life do I think I'm living 🙈
I stopped supporting fast fashion. Took all the apps off my phone. Unsubscribing to emails. I only shop at the thrift store after sitting down and identifying exactly what I need and why. I gained weight during quarantine and I just bought an entire wardrobe of classy and well-made clothing for $120. I’m done buying clothes I don’t need/won’t wear and supporting the fast fashion industry.
I also have capsule wardrobe from thrift stores. It took me 2 years to create it. I have quality clothes, now I only look on ebay what I want,. I plan to get myself lv wristlet but I will save money in a jar $30 a month and I won't feel it.
There is also an ethical side to this. The amount of resources needed to create clothing was absolutely shocking. Not to mention Modern Slavery concerns. We really ought to only buy what we need for both people and planet.
Yep I’m with you. I just never want to buy the boring stuff. I almost have to be desperate to do it. So instead I buy the fun pieces and colorful things and as she says, the ones I don’t actually wear but just keep around as aesthetic objects and eventually become a rebuking presence lurking in the back of my closet
I had the opposite problem as a teen/early 20s, but then after the minimalism trend now I kept buying basics, a discontentment or irritation started to develop after a while and I investigated it to see that I was buying too much basics that I need to be in the middle not the extremes.
My rule is that when I find something I really like, I usually wait 2-3 weeks and if I still really want/need it, then I can purchase. Most of the time I realize I didn’t need it. This was prepandemic now, my new rule, no money and no shopping.
Refreshing to hear this. Seems everything today is about buying more. I've taken far too many items to the charity shop in the past, these days I think about what I need, not what takes my fancy x
Thank you! I’m on a mission to stop buying. During the pandemic I made it my mission to lose weight and improve my health. I lost 85 pounds and had to buy clothes. That started the online shopping. Now I’ve got to stop. Thank goodness I bought good basics and things that could be tailored. Today I will unsubscribe and get with the program!!!
What amazing results! Honestly, what helped me to stop impulse buying was coming up with a savings plan - that prevents me for going crazy when there are sales 😊. Or when I am bored. Or when I have a good day 😎.
Luisa Arch, sure: what I do is pretty straight forward and simple as I save based on the principle “pay yourself first”. In other words, I worked out an amount that I want to save on a monthly basis (I normally have a yearly goal in mind) and every time I get my salary, I transfer that amount into the savings account. Then, I pay all my bills and my rent. And I spend what’s left, instead of saving what’s left. I pay myself first by first putting money aside towards my goals. It’s such a simple shift, but it helped me save waaaaay more than I have saved before. A couple of key things that help: 1. Work out a reasonable monthly amount you want to save. In other words, be ambitious, but reasonably ambitious. This is very important as being frustrated will be counter productive, as you might go on a spending spree because you feel frustrated. So finding the amount that’s both ambitious and doable is key here. 2. Have multiple saving accounts. I have 2 only, because my company also gives us a food allowance that I have on a separate card and it also pays for my transportation. If they wouldn’t, i would create a separate free saving account where I would set aside the equivalent amount for transportation + reasonable estimation for food (once I get my salary). I work with two savings accounts currently: big savings and small savings. The big savings one is the one I do deposit a big amount on a monthly basis (and I try to never retrieve money from it, unless an emergency or to fullfill the objective that I am saving for - such as buying a house). The small savings are for irregular things that I want to save for on the short term - like a weekend trip, plane tickets, a new coat, a course that I want to do, etc. 3. Set an yearly saving goal - this really helps to keep me on track and motivated. 4. Become minimalistic. And I mean, right now. Make an inventory of clothes and objects that are in good shape but you never use them. Sell them in Vinted, Facebook market place or other second hand platforms available in your area. Making space in your home is kind of addictive, once you declutter, you won’t want the clutter back in your life - be it in the shape of clothes, objects, etc. And save this money too. Try not to replace it with more clothes. 5. When you lose motivation, watch savings and budgeting youtubers - it helps me always to get my motivation back up. Once you have a saving plan, it becomes addictive to save your way towards freedom (in whatever terms you define it). Having your finances in order, even on a small salary, gives you freedom and peace of mind. Connected to the larger idea of not wasting money on clothes: I try to buy pieces that make me feel wow when wearing them. Something that brings the average value of my wardrobe up, not just a random fast fashion garment that will look bad after 3 washes. I try to take a couple of days to figure out if I still want the item if the purchase is bigger and is more of a “want” than a “need”. Most of the times, I forget about it :-). I try to really buy pieces that make me feel great and that are good quality. I avoid fast fashion, but sometimes if I happen to find a good quality piece at Zara or Mango, made of good materials, that I know I will wear it for years, I allow myself to buy it. I work well with rewards, so sometimes buying a nice garment will be the consequence of achieving a goal. Go for chic and timeless. I wish you best of luck and you can totally do it! If i could, you can too! 😊
I moved house recently and honestly I felt embarrassed and sick to the pit of my stomach re the endless bags and boxes of clothes I had. Many still had the tag as I bought them to cheer myself up but then when you go out you end up wearing what you feel most comfortable in rather than that fancy top or dress which looked great in your mind in that imaginary bar being the life and soul of the party because you’re wearing that fantastic outfit but the reality is I never feel comfortable to go there or the barbecue/party/black tie event never quite materialise. I sometimes think if I bought the clothes because I thought my life would actually change in some way. Kinda stupid looking at it now but I guess when we’re depressed/anxious/addicted we do these illogical things. With a mortgage and bills to pay now I’ve put myself on a £10 pcm budget which I shouldn’t really even need as I have enough clothes to last me through to my old age - assuming my weight doesn’t change and that’s another story right there!
It’s called buying for your fantasy life/self. It’s extremely common so you’re not alone. That’s why you must ask those W questions before buying anything & keep shopping your closet as you most likrly have it already. A “no buy” goal also really helps reframe our intentions around shopping & gets you off the roller coaster using what you already own.
My big take away was knowing your size. I am not slim anymore and need to own up to my real size. I need just wear what fits. I have many clothes that are too small in my closet.
@@lubnan08 there is a resale store near me (Plato’s closet) and they donate the items they don’t buy from you to a women’s shelter. I would try there or ask your local resale shop where they donate leftover items. Best of luck! :)
I am a shop-a holic and an impulse buyer. I've been struggling to stop this bad habit of mine since this pandemic started and affected my income. I am trying so hard. But sometimes temptation just beat me up. I really wanna practice minimalism but honestly, my love of clothings and fashion abd everything that goes with it wont just fade away easily. Thank you for sharing this videos. I think it's very helpful. I made a video about my quitting buying unnecessary things, I thought it's goin' to be a good stopper for me. Thank your helpful tips.
I’ve been in the same boat and found that when I get an itch to shop for something I put it in a Pinterest board and don’t look at it for a while. If I find I don’t even remember the item or I’m not as drawn to it I don’t buy. I do similar with actual online sites. Put it in your cart and wait a few days to see if you absolutely love/need it!
I have all of the basics yet am addicted to a great sale. I have so many clothes with tags still affixed on them. They are beautiful clothes but I go few places since the pandemic. Thank you for these tips because I need to stop shopping online & be happy with what I have.
These are basically my sewing rules. Sew more cake & less frosting (practical vs whimsical) and don’t sew orphans (things that don’t go with anything). Sew with intention to fill gaps in your wardrobe & always know your measurements.
I am quite a minimalist. I have a curated wardrobe and I have been like this for years. I, during this period of lockdown, have explored perfume. I used to have just one and now I have three. I love not buying things ie. fixing, or making due but as a minimalist when I do buy something it really does make me joyful.
All sage advice, so difficult to implement! The thrill of seeking out the "perfect" items and awaiting their arrival in the mail are sometimes more enjoyable than the items themselves 😂. At least through all my mistakes with impulse shopping, I've come to learn what actually works for me and be more selective. I also find the occasion when I'm most likely to buy too many new clothes is when I'm newly single and back out in the dating world.
Great advice! I must admit I’m guilty of almost everything you mentioned. I want the freedom of a minimalist closet so it’s time to go through my closet, purge what I haven’t worn AND unsubscribe to all clothing stores. It’s very tempting to purchase things when there’s great sales even though I don’t NEED them. Thank you!
Im recently into these types of videos.. i recently lose 28lbs and too excited buying small sized clothes... watched how to shop the basics and now i need to stop, hence checking this video out.. and my time is well spent.. thank you! More power on your channel
Excellent thoughtful video. If I could add one “w” question I picked up from Joshua Becker. What if I don’t? What if I don’t buy this item? Sometimes that’s an extra brake, What if I don’t buy this summer dress? Well I can wear one of the ones I already have, that still look good. Or what if I don’t buy those shoes? I can put the money to my next travel goal, or experience or buy a gift for a friend or donate to a charity etc. Often the value of just leaving that money in our bank accounts for a rainy day.
Sometimes it’s nice to add the item in your favourites (online shopping) and then leave it and if you come back to it and still want it 24/48 hrs later then get it- can sometimes help with impulse buy
A very good idea :) I recommend using a platform like Moonsift.com to save items on boards. Its like Pinterest without all the noise, and alerts you to price drops too.
That was helpful! I was about to purchase some clothes from Zara online, and in the last minute I saw your video in another window on my pc, so after having watched it, I deleted the things that were in the Zara's cart. Thank you very much!!! It's better to try them on first! You're right!
I'm so glad you found it useful Sandra. Obviously this was recorded pre-pandemic when trying before you buy was an option. But I still think that it's a good thing to think twice before clicking. It's so easy to buy online, but a ballache to return often.
This was so refreshing, I am openly admitting influencers have influenced me! I have realised that it is unrealistic to buy nearly every recommendation. You see them wearing something and it’s apparently the best thing going and the next day there is something else. Definitely going to take the advice today each point hit a nerve!! I will subscribe. Looking forward to being inspired.
This is soooo true! I used to follow a couple of fashion influencers and I have just stopped because it looks so good, I order it and it looks awful on me or I start to think - will I wear this as a lot of their fashion is so dressy and I have two kids and a dog so getting into a lovely dress is something that just doesn't happen much as it isn't practical! I am at heart a jeans and top/sweater girl with a little dress thrown in for good measure occasionally and what is wrong with that... The one thing I struggle with though is the online shopping - I don't have the time to go round shops a lot or the money to employ someone to do it with me so sometimes I am forced online but find it so hard to get good things as you just can't tell what it will be like so that does force you to certain brands that you trust/that suit you.
It takes time unfortunately, but if you do it with intention and with a list, know your measurements and read the description of the fabric it helps! Good luck :)
Yes!!! Perfect advice. This year I’ve revamped my basics with perfect simple pieces. This way you can pick that crazy piece from the closet and build the outfit around it. With a basic wardrobe you can also go all in with shoes and jackets/coats and accessories.
A absolutely wonderful video-extremely informative and valuable, especially in the face of influencers on RUclips telling us what they are “obsessed” with, can’t live without, and would definitely spend their own money on if necessary! We MUST remember that these “influencers” are not only receiving the products for FREE, but the RUclipsr is often: PAID to “review” an item; receive sponsorships; and very often make a percentage of their viewers/subscribers sales! Many RUclipsrs are transparent when they tell you that the percentage they receive if you purchase the item does not come out of YOUR pocket, but certainly they will not receive that money if you you don’t buy it! I am NOT saying these practices are illegal immoral or evil, BUT we need to understand the benefits they revive for “hawking” a product, and carefully consider if buying the items are in YOUR best interest! This list can be invaluable to all of us who love fashion, but especially for young people who are susceptible to RUclips videos and often Do NOT have the type of income that will allow/support indiscriminate spending! How often are we tempted to buy something we don’t need, will end up not wearing, or we tire of the minute a new trend comes along?! I KNOW I have been guilty of this, and I simply CANNOT afford to do so on my fixed income! (By the way, THRIFTING CAN BE THE BEST ANSWER FOR FASHION-LOVERS LIKE ME WHO HAVE FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS AND/OR SIMPLY DO NOT BELIEVE IN OVERBUYING UNSUSTAINABLE FAST FASHION! 😃). THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! It will be helpful for me personally, and hopefully for others in a world where the ability to buy (or desire to not overload our closet) does not match up with the temptation to have something pretty, trendy and “new”. It can only help us to become more conscious of our buying habits and what influences us to spend money buying things we don’t need/cannot afford! May the coming year, 2021, usher in a safer, healthier, and happier world for ALL of us! And may SANITY AND RESTRAINT MATCH OUR WALLETS AND OUR WILL! INSTEAD OF LIVING FOR WHAT WE CAN GET, LET’S LIVE FOR WHAT WE CAN SHARE AND ENJOY TOGETHER (As soon as it is safe to do so...otherwise...let creativity reign!). I honestly am going to try harder in the New Year myself, and this list WILL be a big help! I don’t mean to sound preachy, or throw a lot of shade at RUclipsrs, but I worry for young people as I have been through it all myself! It is okay to want, but PLEASE, don’t hurt yourselves in the quest to obtain! Happy 2021 everyone! (And please get vaccinated when it is your turn! And until then...protect yourselves and others by wearing a mask and social distancing!).
I'm so glad you found it useful PJ. Thank you. It's so funny as I avoided doing anything 'public' for years as I'm not that into shopping and never get excited about the latest thing. What I see now is that it's ok to just be honest about that and it isn't a contradiction to be a stylist who isn't crazy about 'hauls' and tells people to buy less :)
Loved this video x I’ve realised through lockdown how many clothes I have unworn in my wardrobe when I shop online I’m now asking myself do I need that the only things I’ve bought are loungewear and pjs, it’s frustrating sometimes when I see things I like but don’t need so I’ve satisfied that urge by revamping things in my home ie cushion covers and a throw to match the season in my sitting room bedroom and conservatory decluttering donating and selling saving and making money it’s addictive 😊 cheers Jenny
I’m 19 and I only barely realized that I just buy aimlessly and in the end never feel like I have anything to wear and then I end up giving away a bunch of stuff 😭😭😭 I want to have a style where I feel pretty and not so overwhelmed
I’m just at the point where I’ve realized I don’t like living in clutter so I’m trying to keep from having to do a “purge” in the future. The minute I buy something, I start getting emotionally attached to it so to avoid the heartbreak in the future, I try to buy less stuff now.
Another one I would add to your list is "do I love it" Do I love the style the color the cut and the fit" This has saved me a fortune on clothes that might fit into all those other perimeters but something is slightly off about it. I love wearing red and blue but only some variations of those colors work for my skin tone and yes its is hard to know if something online is the right hue of those of those colors and I try not to buy those items online, but I have a pretty good idea about things that work for me and my life so I do not do fussy sleeves. I hate them. They do not go well under jackets if the weather turns cooler, they begin to bug me after a period of time or do not wash well and never look the same after once or twice wearing them. I also have a preference for collars. Not a huge fan of certain styles of collars. If I have bought something before and found myself not wearing it because it I was constantly adjusting it or having to fix it because it didn't feel right on my body, that is a hard pass. I also add one or two new styles to my wardrobe and keep a box handy to donate those items if I put them on and immediately am like Nope not feeling it and keep putting it back in my wardrobe. My basic wardrobe is in neutrals with a pop of color from one item to keep it from being bland. That may be a scarf a purse or even a belt. And trend items I purchase the lowest cost I can find to see if it is something worthy of investing in instead of buying designer brands of items that are in style right now but next year or the year after won't be. If I wear out something then I replace it but find by sticking to my own guidelines and not buying items that I do not "Love" I have saved a fortune. I have a black skirt I purchased that I found on clearance and have worn it to death, the same for a pair of boots I own. But trend pieces come and go and I find myself wearing them occasionally if at all. And to be honest most people do not even pay attention to what others are wearing. So unless something makes you feel fabulous don't buy it. This also makes life so much easier when going on trips. I pack 1 week of clothing that can be interchanged to create several different options regardless of for how long I will be away. Am going overseas for a month and only taking one week of clothing with me. Which means packing smarter instead of lugging a lot of luggage with me all over another country. I have my "Uniform" that I wear pretty much daily and a few go to pieces for "dress up". Those are items that are flexible enough to dress up or down and fit into my wardrobe with existing pieces. Is hard and you have to be watchful and my rule of thumb is one in one out because I don't like having a bunch of clothes hanging around that I do not wear and have a limited wardrobe space. So if I buy a new pair of shoes I make myself get rid of a pair of shoes when I get home. I also ask others what do you think of this outfit. Find a trusted person who will tell you honestly if something doesn't fit your body style and coloring. Send them an image of you in the item and ask for feedback. Sometimes an impartial opinion can save you a bundle in pieces you are considering but for whatever reason are unsure of.
I loved this video! I wish other youtubers that promote consumerism would watch this like Shea Whitney with her “out of style” and “outdated outfits” videos 😒
Wait... I thought I just clicked on a video of Alexa Chung sharing her tips on how not to waste money on clothes, but you not Alexa?! Ok I will watch anyway.
Some hard truths here 😁 I KNOW the style that suits me and makes me feel comfortable and happy (classic, slightly tailored, simple, neutral colours)...yet my wardrobe contains so much stuff with labels still on from when I've been impetuously following advice to 'get out of that style rut' (usually in Spring I've just realised). I'm having a good clear-out and staying in my rut 😁
Not only i found it useful, I absolutely enjoyed just listening.... concise, on point, practical and delivered with such quiet elegance in gesture and speech. Also very considerate to people with strong sense of fashion and exuberant style as much as to people with classy and personal style attitude. I have subscribed amidiately🙂
I then to just buy things that I think I will wear, but ultimately we don’t end up going out to a place that requires dressing up. Now in my early 60’s its a movie, lunch or casual dinners. I live in Western Australia and we have not be hit with COVID-19 as bad as the rest of the world, so going out has been like “normal” for us. So I look in my closet now and pretty much don’t like most of what I have except for most of my basics.
I am the type of shopper who loves patterns and colours, so I end up having mismatching clothes. My wardrobe stands out like a sore thumb. Coats especially, I'd see a mustard coat and realise it doesn't match anything else I have. I definitely need some basics to make these items work....then quit clothes shopping 👍 thanks for the video.
Love this. Happy you came on my recommendations. Unfollowed influencers, unsubscribed to emails. I’ve sticked to following my list. If I need it, I’ll go hunt for it online. I’m an online shopper. Gives me time to really look at it, double check my wardrobe to make sure it’ll fit and that I’ll keep for a long time. I hate going to stores, so that helps me not spend, especially on clothing. Also loved how in the description you posted a summary. Thank you. Subscribed =]
This video has really made me think....I’m going to try my very best not to purchase any clothes next year...I’ve already got more than I can possibly wear from impulsive buys......I really am determined not to purchase in 2020
if you are not passionate about creating outfits then you should not buy anymore clothes, but there are people who really love to be creative when wearing something :)
Although buying the “boring” clothes is difficult when you are constantly surrounded by eye-catching clothes, these days, I’m telling myself I can buy the eye-catching ones after I buy the basics so I can use the existing eye-catching clothes I have in my wardrobe. That seems to help. Also, I’m trying to buy basics from good brands (not necessarily designer but more like Quince/ everlane etc) that are well made. This way, I am able to appreciate the QUALITY of the basic colors because they somehow look non-basic. Not sure if I was able to explain that well.
I got rid of sooo many clothes over the past 1-2 years. I feel like I have decent amount of clothes now but I’m mainly focusing on making outfits out of them. Quality Staple pieces are necessary. My goal this year is to only buy clothes that I absolutely love and can wear multiple ways. I’ve never really embraced my femininity and this year, I loook forward to wearing heels and dresses.
Really useful tips! Nowadays social media has so much influence on us buying excessive things. Your video is very helpful to restrain our desire! Thank you !
Such great advice. My intention in 2021 is to only shop when necessary, sell what I dont need and not be influenced by influencers. I want to adopt a minimalist style by knowing the supply chain of the product too
Hi Lizzie just found your channel know exactly what you are talking about my fashion is plain but classy too x have been on a no buy for 3 months now survived Black Friday and winning at Christmas 🎄just fed up with the pointless buying and have fallen out of love with shopping how many black jumpers white t shirts do we really need oh and ankle boots 🙈 don’t need to buy for a couple of years x good luck with your channel you look such a classy lady best wishes x
Thank you so much, Jennifer. Great luck with it. I did a No Buy in 2020, but forgot to post the video. It's going up soon, with a review to follow. Hang in there :)
Hi Lizzie! Thank you for the video and your stance on anti-clothing haul culture and overconsumption.. such intuitive and simple tips and it's a great reminder! I would love a video on how to become a personal stylist :) thank you!
First time viewer here. Your video just came up on my feed and I'm glad I clicked. Your list today was right on the money. I am a lover of clothes, any kind. If it is colorful, comfortable or fashionable I will buy it. I have ended up with a huge amount of clothing that I love. I do shop at consignment stores and thrift shops and I do have places I like to shop and basically I just shop because I like it whether I buy anything or not. I lost a lot of weight and had to buy new so I have a lot of new things and would continue to shop and buy if I had lots of space. I retired and moved so my lifestyle has changed. That should be on your list. I ask myself where I would wear it? even if I love it. I pack my great outfits to wear if I am going out of town on a trip. I am wanting to come to England in September of 21 so I do not want to blow my money on clothes. Not one more thing do I want to bring into my house! I think buying with a purpose is such a good way to shop because you know what you need. And knowing size is so important especially with online.
Hi Lizzie! I’ve just found your channel. Love it. Well, I always look at the mirror and never like my outfits, even though I like them all in my wardrobe. At the end, I buy another outfit and have the same feeling. Now, I’m feeling cluttered of course with so many outfits ideas and options that I don’t feel comfortable wearing.
That’s exactly how I feel. I try to put outfits together that others are wearing, but I never feel like I look polished. So frustrating, I want to return everything!
I always buy outfits in pairs because I know I won't wear it if nothing in my wardrobe can match with it. But it makes me sad knowing they will fall apart after 2-3 years and I won't be able to get a replacement since trends come and go. So now I decided to only purchase high quality clothes that will last a long time, and thrift for basics.
Since being made redundant last March, l buy a lot less than I used to. I found that l mainly bought clothes for work, so l wasn't wearing the same things all the time!
Thanks for the tips. I don't have many of those problems.because I am too tall to shop impulsivly. This year I ordered about 15 pieces and just 3 were a fit. With one I wonder if I should have kept it. Usually I have to try 10-15 pairs of trousers or jeans to find a pair that fits. My problem is that I only shop in one store and something that looks good in the store compared to clothes that make me feel old, does not look so good at home.
Get ya colours done first....wise advice from this lady! I will be going through all my clothes start 2021 on line wasted money some don't arrive.....Sizes vary from different brands...
Hollo thank you. Over the years taste is changing and i end up with a garderobe full of beautiful pieces that are not me any more and would not fit me as well ... so you slowly build up your new style and garderobe
I've just watched our and found our very convincing. I do but things online - spontaneously, late in the evening. Always regret it. At 48 I know what works and what doesn't. And still I do it 😂 I'll stick to your advice.
My partner tells me off constantly for buying so many clothes. I do shop a lot, but I also sell a lot of my clothes so I find it balances it out slightly 🤷♀️🥺
Thank you!!! This is one of THE best pieces of advice I've encountered in my quest to be "fashionable"! Appreciate, too, your clear/succinct/approachable teaching style & presence. Will subscribe immediately. More importantly, will share this video with my many "shop-a-holic" friends (their closets overflowing that they're resorted to storage space rental outside their homes.) Bravo! 👍👍👍
agree with everything this girl said 100% And also: I dont know who needs to hear this but here it goes: Buy that outfit girl, it WILL solve all of your problems😂
If this was a court house, I would declare "guilty" in all of them. But learning... Just yesterday, I was browsing new dresses to buy. And there were a couple that I really liked amongst others. Just to open my wardrobe and find a very similar one inside. That tells me that those are my style, what I like, what works for me. I also put everything on a rota now. So I am forced to wear everything.
As someone who is a personal stylist and now a RUclips fashion blogger, how would you recommend that I minimize my unnecessary spending? It is so tempting to keep something that I have bought so showcase in a video. Or when I am shopping for a client, I see things that I want to buy. Please don't say change career :)
You can do content on how to style a certain piece in multiple ways... How to use it, pair it, etc etc... You can focus on colors, styles, body types, etc. So many things to do with a single piece. I prefer to watch something like this than the ultimate buys that are trendy ;)
You just have to be strong and sit on your hands! It's hard sometimes, though when I shop with my clients I find it scratches the itch. If you need items for a video, send them back when it's been recorded. :)
Just discovered your channel and I really love it! Sage, relatable and down-to-earth advice! I love it. Greetings from Australia and, please, keep posting your wonderful videos!!
The problem is I like different styles so one day I’m into classic vintage, then grunge then skimpy and sometimes i just go off a style and it sits there, what to do
Either you do that, hav fund with it but know it takes the effort, time, and money or create a signature style and keep it simple, save money and time :)
don't buy anymore clothes until you either don't fit into your clothes anymore or they become to worn to wear. Or wait until a family member or friend has a sort out and then take what you like. When I say to my hubby, do you like my new top? He asks who had a sort out. I used to buy way to much stuff but realised it was pointless and a waste of money. Far play if you love buying clothes, but you could buy from a charity shop and will get that shopping rush and also helping others.
@@LizzieEdwardsUK thank you, Lizzie! Actually I am planing a low/no buy for the whole summer.Start is on the 1st of June, then July & August. Wish me luck!
@@ivajekova7747 Brilliant! I have been 5 months now - though it's not been so hard as it would have been in normal times. I am going to do a No Buy Update video next month. You can do it :)
Hi thanks for this! Will definitely follow this guide in the coming year, my last online purchase was for a plain black top, and pink joggers, which never arrived, due to the courier not finding my address! He sent the parcel back, and I got a refund, although I was upset at the time, I realised I had already plenty of things to wear similar, and was just buying because I had an email, I think a basic wardrobe is the best option for me, as when I buy the odd in fashion piece because I like it, it normally doesn’t suit me! It is so much easier to get ready with a basic wardrobe too! 👍🏻💕x
Love this so much! I had a depth year a while back as well as a tree change. During this time, I stripped my wardrobe back to basics and it's been so incredibly freeing (and good for the environment, too). Of course, I still stuff up now and then (Insta ads have messed with my head), but an intelligent, thoughtful LIST and a reality check in terms of my post-meno size. ;-) That will save me for sure! Thanks, Lizzie. xo
All good advice, but easier said than done. I’m so sick of wasting money and having a closet full of clothes I don’t touch! I want to focus and get quality basics but don’t know where to begin. It’s so overwhelming.
Make sure that most of the clothes that you purchase contain a significant amount of natural material such as cotton, wool or silk. They tend to hold up better and last longer. Don't assume that something is high quality just because it's expensive. You will end up paying $100 for a 100% polyester shirt.
I experienced it the other way round: polyester, dating back to the early 1970's looks like new whereas cotton developed stains, silk breaks, wool delights moths. Still, I prefer natural fibres over synthethics, too!
Great advice, thank you! Minimalists looking for adventure can still bump it up with quality buys (think silk blouse, cashmere coat...), and can have great fun with jewelry and other accessories. They can even go a little wilder with less public items such as lingerie, pajamas, and loungewear. Nothing like weaing leopard underwear covered by the most conservative outfit!
I always tell my daughter all you need is a good pair of Chanel or Luis Vuitton shoes or boots and a belt and bag and sunglasses then you can wear anything with it and it will look good even a pair of Levi's and a white madewell teeshirt thats what I do and if you don't have money for designer footwear a cute pair white converse throw a men's blazer over a teeshirt vintage is best and cheap
I'm guilty of this as I needed a new wardrobe of clothing, the mistake I made was overspending. Luckily I overcame the addiction by cleaning my wardrobe. I got rid of clothing I either don't wear anymore, worn out or simply didn't need. From personal experience before buying clothing, always spend a couple of days analysing your wardrobe before making any decisions.
I do love shopping online because I have a feeling that I'm saving money but in the end I always end up spending more. Also, how to stop buying things that are similar to my style but slightly different. I also like minimalistic, monochromatic styles, but often times I end up buying same thing in different textures or colors?
The trick with this pandemic times is we DO shop more cause we have more time on our hands BUT we end up with clothes that we can't wear because we got nowhere to go! Anybody experienced that recently?...
Yeah, but I'm thinking that I will use them when the pandemic is over?
@@EmyN
Hopefully, yes!
Isn't that why we bought them in the first place? 😉😁
Yes. I can't wait to open up again so I can wear my new clothes
I've been shopping very hopefully due to the pandemic - futuristic Paco Rabanne's, dreamy Cecilie Bahnsen's & contemporary Bottega's. Like seriously, what kind of life do I think I'm living 🙈
Same bought some skirts. Girl where you going and who you kidding, you’re in sweats al day everyday lol
@@agneslaufer9579 yea!!!!! Think about how much money you saved!! Isn’t it insane what we will do for fashion and beauty
@@agneslaufer9579
Me too on ebay. I also wonder if there is a sort of thrift store equivalent in Italy?...
What’s even more ridiculous is that we tend to wear a lot of the same clothes over and over!
@@danif.9414 I have heard by watching overseas RUclipsrs that they have a hard time thrifting, like in the UK. Is this true in Italy too?
There is also an ethical side to this. The amount of resources needed to create clothing was absolutely shocking. Not to mention Modern Slavery concerns. We really ought to only buy what we need for both people and planet.
Yes! :)
The boring clothes are the hardest to spend money on even though they're so needed.
@E KL me too!😊
Yep I’m with you. I just never want to buy the boring stuff. I almost have to be desperate to do it. So instead I buy the fun pieces and colorful things and as she says, the ones I don’t actually wear but just keep around as aesthetic objects and eventually become a rebuking presence lurking in the back of my closet
Yes, for most people! I love them :)
I wish I could wait like that good for you
I do this but subconsciously so by the time I realize I really do want something, it's already gone or sold out.
@@shutyourfaceup6166 same! I still buy certain things in an impulse knowing they'll be sold out quickly 😢
@@aygulmemet4201 I do the same because I freak out and I don't want "what happened last time" again. And then I usually end up returning it lol.
i use that same rule and by that time it's on sale
I loved that a video like this came up for a change. I regret most of the things I got in 2020, just because I was "influenced".
Same, I see that certain trends look good on other people and I want to recreate their outfit too 😭
Thanks, and hopefully 2021 will be a different story :)
Refreshing to hear this. Seems everything today is about buying more. I've taken far too many items to the charity shop in the past, these days I think about what I need, not what takes my fancy x
Yes, it's hard to resist when we are bombarded. Hope this helps as a reminder for you. Good luck :)
Congrats on your amazing weight loss!
What amazing results! Honestly, what helped me to stop impulse buying was coming up with a savings plan - that prevents me for going crazy when there are sales 😊. Or when I am bored. Or when I have a good day 😎.
Congratulations on your weight loss!
@@roxanacucu3860
Congrats on such a huge accomplishment!!! Roxana do you mind please share your saving plan??? Thanks
I have more going out clothes than normal clothes just because they're always glittery and sparkly and they catch my eye
Same problem here, also much more nice summer dresses and general lightweight clothes while I live in Norway :)))) with not much of summer
Just wear them inside😋 life is your party
@@hakashi09 i think its our subconcious dressing for the life we want not the actual one we lead
@@hakashi09 I'm the opposite. I live in Southern California but I'm drawn to boots and cozy sweaters that I hardly get to wear.
@@esmeedesi9027 agree! i love to wear pretty clothes inside as i do love looking good for myself only and not for the people XD
Moomin Mai I can relate🙈 😉
I'm exactly the same. Boxes and bags of clothes and shoes, most of which I've hardly worn...
Great advice :) A No Buy goal helps loads. I did it last year!
Honestly, let them go. Be kind to yourself. It is very cathartic. You won't miss them and it will be an immense relief. :)
My big take away was knowing your size. I am not slim anymore and need to own up to my real size. I need just wear what fits. I have many clothes that are too small in my closet.

Me too! Thank you!
Same ahaha help
Sameeeee... I need to stop :(
I have all of the basics yet am addicted to a great sale. I have so many clothes with tags still affixed on them. They are beautiful clothes but I go few places since the pandemic. Thank you for these tips because I need to stop shopping online & be happy with what I have.
True @t be happy with what u have..I'm trying to practice that..since I have new clothes folded and not wearing.
Good to hear Reneé! :) It is hard at the moment as we can't even wear what we already have!
Focus on quality over quantity
Look what makes you shine!
Its different for everyone
These are basically my sewing rules. Sew more cake & less frosting (practical vs whimsical) and don’t sew orphans (things that don’t go with anything). Sew with intention to fill gaps in your wardrobe & always know your measurements.
I am quite a minimalist. I have a curated wardrobe and I have been like this for years.
I, during this period of lockdown, have explored perfume. I used to have just one and now
I have three. I love not buying things ie. fixing, or making due but as a minimalist when I do
buy something it really does make me joyful.
So true! It is hard to do, and no one is ever perfect, it's just being more aware that can at least lessen the waste.
I have just found this channel. I really like Lizzie’s professional view and her voice is very calm and comforting.
Thank you for your kind words Andrea Kiss. Much appreciated.
Thank you!
You've got this Renee!
Love this idea. A great W! :)
Sometimes it’s nice to add the item in your favourites (online shopping) and then leave it and if you come back to it and still want it 24/48 hrs later then get it- can sometimes help with impulse buy
I'm trying to stretch my "wanting that piece" to a week, cause 24/48 hours just isn't enough sometimes ;)
A very good idea :) I recommend using a platform like Moonsift.com to save items on boards. Its like Pinterest without all the noise, and alerts you to price drops too.
Yes, they are still there, there is no panic :)
I'm so glad you found it useful Lesley.
Absolutely!! This is it. :)
Thanks, Jenny. Yes, lockdown has changed everyone's wearing and shopping habits.

You are so right you really dont need that many clothes i tend to wear the same clothes over and over i dont have many clothes

Thank you for your kind words Olga. Much appreciated.
I totally agree with the un subscription of the brands.it is a huge temptation and I always purchase the stuff which I don't need.

GREAT. I AM ON MY WAY TO THIS. Absolutely agree, I 'll always try to do it like this. Thank you. Really useful. Every one should see this Video.
Fantastic Isabel Martín
Thanks for your comment Denisa :) Good luck with your savings!
Thanks, Karen. It's worth spending the time on a wardrobe audit and only buying specific items you need. You'll get there!
It is so frustrating and can be time consuming creating a wardrobe that works. But worth the effort if looking and feeling good matters :)
Brilliant Aygül, Thanks for sharing!
This is such an important message in general to spread, thank you 💛
Since being made redundant last March, l buy a lot less than I used to. I found that l mainly bought clothes for work, so l wasn't wearing the same things all the time!
Yes that will have cut your spending down! I hope you find a new job soon. all the best. :)
-WHEN are you going to wear it?
-WHY do you need it?
-WHAT do you need it for?
Brilliant! Much love from NYC 👛 xx
Great video. I have been trying for a long time to be more mindful of my purchases. It is a slow process, but I see massive improvement. Xx
Me too
You can do it!
It gets easier :) Even attempting it is progress.
Get ya colours done first....wise advice from this lady! I will be going through all my clothes start 2021 on line wasted money some don't arrive.....Sizes vary from different brands...
You got this!
Hollo thank you. Over the years taste is changing and i end up with a garderobe full of beautiful pieces that are not me any more and would not fit me as well ...
so you slowly build up your new style and garderobe
Thanks tamar almagor!
I've just watched our and found our very convincing. I do but things online - spontaneously, late in the evening. Always regret it. At 48 I know what works and what doesn't. And still I do it 😂 I'll stick to your advice.
Yes Beata :) You can do it. And thank you for your comments :)
My partner tells me off constantly for buying so many clothes. I do shop a lot, but I also sell a lot of my clothes so I find it balances it out slightly 🤷♀️🥺
Excellent advice and plain speaking, how very refreshing. Thank you
Thank you!!! 👍👍👍
I'm so pleased to hear that J Louie
agree with everything this girl said 100%
And also:
I dont know who needs to hear this but here it goes:
Buy that outfit girl, it WILL solve all of your problems😂
Hihihi :D
Love it. Easier said than done sometimes eh :)
Thanks, Lizzie. Glad to find you here!
Good to hear Kirsten! :)
This is so helpful! this video, from somebody who loves to shop and constantly buy material items thank you ☺️
If this was a court house, I would declare "guilty" in all of them.
Well done Graziela Santos, that's amazing :)
Thank you I keep the three www in mind when I next go shopping I’m more in to my health now then fashion thx 😊
Good to hear Cashmere4500! :)
The problem is I like different styles so one day I’m into classic vintage, then grunge then skimpy and sometimes i just go off a style and it sits there, what to do
I get a little bit of everything and then end up not wearing it, because I've only bought enough to make 1-2 outfits of each aesthetic 😭
Either you do that, hav fund with it but know it takes the effort, time, and money or create a signature style and keep it simple, save money and time :)
Love this! Thanks so much for the practical tips :) Currently building up my basics so that more outfits work together 😋 x
don't buy anymore clothes until you either don't fit into your clothes anymore or they become to worn to wear.
If only I could follow your wise advices...🤔 I agree with all that you said but when Im stressed I end up shopping
It is very hard I know! But at least you have an awareness, and that's the first step :)
Such a helpful and engaging video tysm! This is the first video from you that I’ve seen and I’ll definitely be watching more!
I'm so glad you found it useful Tay.
A great way to start 2021. Thank you, it's a very good list to follow. I've made notes. It's the way forward!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, Lizzie. xo
I'm so glad you found it useful Jen! Thanks :)
All good advice, but easier said than done. I’m so sick of wasting money and having a closet full of clothes I don’t touch! I want to focus and get quality basics but don’t know where to begin. It’s so overwhelming.
Thanks Brenda Ritter! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It takes effort, yes. But it's worth it. Keep at it :)
I’m here for the accent ! Love it!
Great Lu GioF! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm American really. Whatever it takes (JOKE) :))
Yes! :)
You are absolutely right!!! I try to consider most of it in 2021! 👍🏻
Great Kerstin. Good luck with it! :)
I just clicked like button only i saw the background.I love your home deco style ( i hope it is your home) and definitely the content.Thank you 😘
Great advice, thank you!
What is a well made white t shirt??????? Where can I find them???
@@capassoluigi7387 I found them at the German brand windsor. It is very difficult for women!
Loved your practical
advice, looking to tighten up my spending on clothing for 2021 and this will help!
Good for you! Well done Andrea Szott
Hi Lizzie, would love a wardrobe tour. I’m am in my 40s and am too a fan of a minimal wardrobe 😊
Totally! Congratulations and well done :)
I really needed this. Thank you. More please.🙏
Subscribed! Loved your points! The 3 Ws
I do love shopping online because I have a feeling that I'm saving money but in the end I always end up spending more. Also, how to stop buying things that are similar to my style but slightly different. I also like minimalistic, monochromatic styles, but often times I end up buying same thing in different textures or colors?
Great video that really hits home. Thank you!
Such great advice! Thank you. Stumbled upon your channel. Subscribed.
I love the 3Ws!
Great tips! Thank you.
Just found you today and subscribed. Looking forward to more!
I'm so glad you found it useful Donna Andre.
