  • How to install WordPress in a subdirectory
    This quick video will show you how to install WordPress in a subdirectory using a standard cPanel web hosting interface.
    You can use this method to start building a new website while keeping your old site live. There are many other reasons why you might want to install WordPress in a subdirectory, such as to have a secondary WordPress site to use for an event or with a theme like OptimizePress to manage your squeeze and sales pages.

    Use this tutorial. Terri knows what she is talking about and gives step by step, easy to follow instructions. While my hosting company happens to have a WordPress installer built into their service which works fine, Terri's alternative works just as well and gives you a bit more control over things too.

      Thanks, Christian Platt. I do prefer manual installation over the one-click install - usually less surprises that way. And less default themes to delete.

    • @beyondtheoffice

      Krisztian Kincses In my experience, yes, this is the best way to rebuild a site without taking the current site down. For the new site, I would consider using a plugin that keeps the site "under wraps" while its in development so other's can't peek - beyondtheoffice.com/blog/hide-wordpress-site-development/

    Hi Terri, thanks for your great tutorial. Now I have two wordpress installs, one in main domain and another in sub-directory. But can you tell me one thing? Will google see both wordpress sites as two different sites? How can I submit a sitemap again to tell google that we are same sites and traffic coming in both are same so I can GET boost in alexa ranking of both wordpress traffics? I am tensed because we have two different wordpress installs now, two different htaccess, two different robotext files....then how will google find both installations (first in main domain, second in sub-directory) as a single website?

But when I am hiding the subdirectory slug from the post URL by modifying the .htaccess file, the sub directory name got hidden as per the requirement but the posts of my main domain is inaccessible and getting 404 error. I think it depends on what you goal is. If they need to be separate sites, for different audiences, then yes, subdirectories might be the way to go. But if they're all aimed at a similar audience, then you might be able to keep them in one site and just use categories and tags to create separate archives.

    HI Terri! thanks for the video : )
    I am a little confused about whether i need to buy another subdomain to use optimizePress or if i can do it the way you are showing. Im wanting to create online courses and use Optimizepress as a membership.
    I was told that i should create a subdomain and download a fresh wordpress site and then upload OP theme. Then someone else said upload a fresh Wordpress to a sub directory and then upload the OP theme to that. thanks so much!

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  9 лет назад +1

      Tribal Junkie you don't buy subdomains - that would be something you set up on the server/host after you have set up your domain.
      Either of the solutions that you were told would work. It really just depends on if how you want the URL to be. If you want something like courses.yourdomain.com then make a subdomian. If you want yourdomain.com/courses, install WP in a subdirectory.

      Terri Orlowski After watching some vids from others I found out that it is rather easy but it can come with some issues down the track. Easy for a developer to handle but complex for a novice like me. In the end I decided I'm going to go with addon domains and subdomains when mixing installations. And keep the subdirectory installs to the same script. In other words, I chickened out. ;) But thanks for getting back to me so quickly on my inquiry. Much appreciated.

    Great video. Thanks. I'm rebuilding a site for a client. He wants the new website to be built on his current domain...just like your tutorial. After the new website is built, what do you do to get rid of the old website, move the new website out of the sub directory, and then set up and 301 redirects (the new website will have different page names)?

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  9 лет назад

      I have another video on my channel about moving a site with BackupBuddy - that's my go-to method of moving sites. As far as the URLs/page names, I'd use something like the Redirection plugin to 301 the old pages to the new ones. Make sure you're connected with Google Webmaster Tools so you can track if the old URLs are being used.

    Hi Terri, your video was very good. I am wondering if this is what I have been looking for to simply add a blog to my existing html website. If I download WP in a sub-directory called "/blog", will it leave the rest of the domain alone? Will I be able to create a link from my actual site to /blog so that readers will be able to get to the blog portion of the site, and back again to the main content if I create a link back to the plain domain.com? Thanks for any clarification! -Tamara

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  9 лет назад +1

      yes, if you install WordPress in a subdirectory called "blog", then it should leave the rest of the site alone. And then you could create a link from your website to it and back again. :)

    Hi, great tutorial. One question.
    If the site involves having user registration, would this structure still work? What I mean is, is a user needs to login to the site, with this wordpress structure, they would need to register on both wordpress installations. Is this right?

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  9 лет назад

      Richard c Yes, each WordPress installation uses it's own database, at least if you set it up the way I showed in the video. I know there are ways to have two installs share a database, but they would still have separate tables, so logging in to each site would be separate, too.

  • @johnnyclingham2803

    Please confirm using the automatic install from Cpanel is no difference to a manual install, once i have have created the sub folder or i could get word press to create sub folder for me as part of the install do you see any issues with this in my case i want to create a forum using BB press etc but i want to keep it separate to my main domain and also keep the users separate as well

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  8 лет назад

      +Johnny Clingham I prefer manual install. Automatic install tends to install a bunch of unwanted and unnecessary themes and such in the installation that I then just have to uninstall. Also, some hosting company use a different sort of service to automatically install that I've seen connected to hacked sites, so I don't necessarily trust the security of those setups.
      If you have BBPress setup with a different WordPress installation, the users will not be shared. If this is your desire, then I don't see any issues with that setup.

    Terri - really appreciate the info on your video.
    Unfortunately, I've managed to mess up something on my install. I have one subfolder that is functioning like a champ. I installed a second subfolder, didn't like the name so I deleted it with all file and restarted - I used initial capitals for the name and changed it. Now I can do the complete install following your instruction, and everything seems to go right, however when I attempt to log into the subfolder I get a "page not found" message and am redirected to the main page.
    Any ideas on what I have managed to do to myself and how I might fix it? Thank you!!

I want and planning to create a subdirectory and install wordpress in it; However, I still want to use the same theme and keep the same posts I already have on my current worpress website (I want to keep the same content because I will make some very few changes and I am planning to add a specific geographic location to the subdirectory site created via google search console).

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  7 лет назад

      you can copy your current website to the subdomain using a tool like BackupBuddy so it will have the same theme and posts and such. However, keep in mind that having the exact same content on two different sites is not great for search ranking. Check out this video for using BackupBuddy - ruclips.net/video/SUA0Q-UdR_U/видео.html

    Why did you not just use the Wordpress installation script in your cPanel? Is there a reason?

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  7 лет назад

      I prefer not to use the one click install functions as they often add extra plugins and themes that aren't always necessary and can be a security vulnerability, especially when not updated. Doing a manual install doesn't take that much more time and gives you a cleaner site to start with.

    Great video! I noticed you already had wordpress installed in your main site but I am looking to add wordpress as a subdomain so that while I design the wordpress site I can still have my current html site active. Does it matter than my main site is not currently a wordpress site? Thanks for any help you can provide!

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  10 лет назад

      Nope, it really shouldn't matter what's in the root directory if you're installing WordPress in a subfolder.

      Terri Orlowski Thanks for your reply. I followed all your steps and successfully installed wordpress in a sub directory. I installed a theme as well but now I cannot figure out how to view the wordpress pages. I keep getting an error message. Do you have any experience with this?

      Generally I use SELECT, INSERT, ALTER, CREATE, UPDATE, DELETE, DROP. I haven't had an issue with not being able to do something with a WordPress site using these database permissions.

    but the permanent links don't works whit that :/ any advice? I use nginx.

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  10 лет назад

      Michael, I'm not sure why that's not working for you. It might be because of nginx, but I've never used that, so I'm not sure. On a LAMP server with cPanel, I know the permalinks work fine. Maybe check .htaccess? (or equivalent)

    Can I do this to add a WordPress blog to my static website? :)

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  7 лет назад

      Yes, you can. You would just make a folder to house your blog and install WordPress there. If you need help installing it, I offer that as a service. Let me know if you're interested. :)

    i have website with 2 other subdirectories, but when i try to view the one I created new web (in wordpress), it redirects to the main website, but there is another subdirectory website that does not redirects, it opens up easily, sample websites name only not the actual-> (www.mywebsite.com/en = is the main, www.mywebsite.com/test = it opens up without any redirection to the main, www.mywebsite.com/eng = it redirects to the main, i tried to make another one, with another name it still redirects to the main!) I checked the redirects in the cpanel, there is only one redirects- which is the main website, can you or someone help me on this? thanks a lot!! (note: i am not the original web designer of that page, i only maintain it, another person made it which i do not have any contact anymore, thanks again!)

      @beyondtheoffice  6 лет назад

      I'm sorry you're having trouble with that. Have you tried a different folder name instead of eng? Sometimes WordPress will think it was a typo and try to redirect you to what it thinks is the right page. If changing the folder name doesn't help, try asking your hosting tech support for help.

    Here is a trick question for you (And I'm hoping you can really answer this one). To get to that subdomain, you have to type in www.website.com/subdomain, correct? How do we make it so it goes to an entirely different domain all together? So that same exact site you created will display instead at www.myotherwebsite.com? In other words, no association whatsoever with www.website.com.

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  7 лет назад

      www.example.com/subdomain is actually a subdirectoy. subdomain.example.com would be a subdomain. And if you want it to be a separate domain altogether, you need to add the other domain as an add-on domain on your hosting account. This process will create a subdomain as well as the addon domain, and the rest of the process (setting up WP in the folder) is basically the same as in the video.

      Thanks so much. Yes, sorry- I meant to say subdirectory.

    Dear Terri,
    I am having hard time because of alot of old information .
    I have installed Wp on my subfolder.
    I intend to have many subfolder with many Wordpress.
    Each folder will have its own URL ofcourse.
    1. Do you have a video tutorial of how i cna have a Seperate Url Linked to that sub folder ( eg for some company)
    2. My URL takes me to My Public HTML Folder space :/
    I have my own Wordpress in a subfolder. My Url to My wp Looks Like Mydomain.com/folder
    I want it to look like Mydomain.com Only.
    How do i achieve this?
    Do i have to buy another Domain Name Now because Public Html has a different domain and each folder Must have different domain?

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  9 лет назад +1

      So, if you have it set up as a subdomain in your cPanel, then the url for that specific install should be subdomain.yourdomain.com. For example, if my subdomain name was foo, then the URL would be foo.domain.com.
      If you have it as a subdirectory (just installed in a folder, but no subdomain created) then the URL would be yourdomain.com/subdirectory/. Again, if the subdirectory (folder) was named foo, then the URL would be yourdomain.com/foo/.
      You shouldn't need to have a separate domain for each folder, but if your host allows, you can *can* use a new domain as an addon domain for your account and when you set that up in cPanel, it basically makes a subdomain setup as well. But separate domains are not required.
      Note - some hosting companies may have limits to the number of subdomains and/or addon domains you can create on one account.
      Does that help?

      Terri Orlowski OMg Ty Terri, It does makes sense, I did add a domain name to one folder and have a site in that folder, which has its own .com domain.
      I wanted my own blog with the domain name i purchased, and all other folders have their own seperate domains that i could try renting or giving to friends to experiment and learn website creation.
      My package is a business package with unlimited site creation. However it seems their unlimited data storage is actually * limited. Meh
      i been trying to crack my head to get my /Folder website that i subdomained from www.folder.domain.com To just www.domain.com
      and now after reading your comment it seems this is impossible?
      i did read on wp forums and been experimenting on that, Something that shows how to transfer your website from main to inside a folder yet still have it called domain.com
      there is a file they keep referring to, htacces, It used to be there, under root folder, and i deleted it cause it got messed up with some edits as i was experimenting.
      Now its not getting created when i create wordpress inside a folder. no matter i update the permalink.
      it seems you are quite busy, and i thank you for your response. I am no business man.
      My site as experiment was purchased for 5 or 3 year contract on jan 2014. I keep trying to do stuffs, then i get lost on one or the other problem and then i just leave it.
      i even had some one from freelancer.com take a project for me, who got me half of what i wanted. but he didnt explain to me how he did it. and then as i was working more and experimenting more, my root folder kept getting bloated more and more, i eventually decided to clean it up. my experience with freelancer was, he kept asking more and more for tiny updates and didnt bother to tell me how to do them. In the end all his work is now lost.
      would you be free to do this task? Maybe for a nominal charge. I am more interested in learning. There isnt a single video there that teaches how to create a site from inside a folder yet have it linked to the main domain. But there are 2 written tutorials on wp.org where i keep getting referred to.
      Originally my domain started to show all my folders in my server the moment i created my site in a sub folder. I want it to redirect to my folder. Can only be achieved if i buy another domain? Dont want to buy a domain and pay yearly just for a root and no use :/

    Hi Terri!
    Thanks for the tutorial! I'm stuck on one step. I've installed wordpress in the new folder but when I type in the URL with the subdirectory it doesn't bring me to a file configuration page. It's just a 404 error page. Any ideas?
    Here is the URL it takes me to...
    velvetviewfarmstead.com/newsite/wp-admin/setup-config.php
    Thanks!
    D

      Diane Gress Hm - not sure what's going on there. It could be where you have the WordPress files. Did you do the manual upload/unzip like in the video, or use a one-click installer from your hosting company?

    • @dianegress7572
      @dianegress7572 9 лет назад

      Terri Orlowski I did the manual upload/unzip like in the video. I think I uploaded wordpress to the right place...I created the new subdirectory in the web root folder with all the other files for the current site and then uploaded wordpress to the new folder. Then I created the database. But when I go to configure it it shows the error page. I'm using GoDaddy, so if you know of any glaring differences between the two please let me know :)

    What would you do if you are trying to switch your site over from joomla to wordpress?

    • @beyondtheoffice
      @beyondtheoffice  10 лет назад

      Kaylee, I would recommend that you set up WordPress in a subdirectory (or subdomain) as I show in this video and get it all ready to go there. Then you could use a tool like the Backup Buddy plugin (bynd.me/backup) to help you move your site to the root directory for your site.
