A WordPress subdomain install is done in a very similar way to installing WordPress in a domain root. We just install to a different folder.
First thing is to create the subdomain. Inside your cPanel account you should have a link called Subdomain. Click on it.
Then fill in the simple form on the next page. Enter the word or phrase for the subdomain, pick the domain that it will be sub to and then enter the path for the subdomain's document root.
Then click on Create. Your subdomain has been created. It's that easy.
In the create process a new folder was created inside the root folder of the main website. That is where we'll upload fresh WordPress files in a few minutes.
But first, we're going to create the database.
To do this, go back to your cPanel and open the MySQL databases page. Enter a name for a new database and create it. Make note of the database name because we'll need in a minute.
Next, and on that same page, create a new user and give them a unique password or use the password generator.
Make note of the username and the password.
Now scroll to the bottom of the MySQL database page and link to the user to the database and give them all privileges.
The database is now created and ready.
Now we'll upload new WordPress files.
Go to WordPress.org and download the latest WordPress installation package to your computer.
Next, log into the File Manager in hosting account and open the root of your website. Inside that root folder should be a folder with the same name as you chose for you subdomain. Open that folder.
It should be empty.
Now, click on the Upload link in the menu system. It will open a new window or a new tab. Click the button to open the file browser and choose the WordPress files you just downloaded.
It should complete very quickly. Once complete, you can close the upload window/tab.
Now hit Reload in the File Manager. A zip file should appear. Click it to highlight it and then click on Extract in the top menu.
Click on Ok on the dialog box that pops up to begin extraction.
Click on Reload again so you can see all the files.
Click on the wp-config.php file and then click on Code Editor to open that file in the editor.
Find the section where the database credentials go and copy the info from your database in there. Click on Save Changes when you're done.
Now, open your subdomain in a new browser tab or window. You should be presented with the familiar WordPress installation screen.
Install WordPress as normal.
Once installed you can log in and now you have a WordPress site in a subdomain. Pretty sweet!

You make things simple. I think that's the best compliment I can give to an instructor.
THE BEST TURORIALLLL!! You should be teaching in universities! SO easy to follow and understand, thank you!!
+Marissa Elliott Thanks! And you're welcome, I'm glad I could help.
You're a life-saver! Couldn't face my superior and submit a failed project yet all I needed was your tutorial. Thanks for sharing Bjorn. Blessings!
I come back to this tutorial all the time. So clear and easy to follow. Thank you!
Awesome, I'm happy it helps you so much :) Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
This is honestly the best tutorial and solution I have found! Thank you so much for being clear and thorough! I finally have my subdomain set up (:
That's great news Jessi, I'm glad I could help! Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching!
Very good - straightforward method and clearly explained. If anything, the steps that you needed to rectify actually made it even more helpful, because you also conveyed an idea of what people will need to troubleshoot when things go wrong. Thanks!
You are the man!
I am one of your subscribers and I MUST say that you are an AWESOME man!!!
I just love the way you explain things as you explain it so simple and it makes the learning process so fun!
Keep up the good and AWESOME work!
And last but not least... THANK YOU for your hard work and time!
Keep it Up man!

Thanks for responding, it was all over the place for me, way above my head. No idea as to what was going on. No idea as to why I should or needed to add a sub domain. Just wasn’t clear as to the reason for it’s purpose. I did try to grasp your teaching but just couldn’t follow your concepts. I had watched a video you previous made and found that to be a head spin too. I know that you are technically incredible, but relaying that knowledge and know how across to me seems to be a bridge to far. I think I need to watch simpler videos of explanations before I can advance to yours. 🚀👍🏼
I miss Bjorn. His videos were so good and thorough that they were actually relaxing to hear. Been a while since we've heard his expertise. Hope he's doing OK!
I’m coming back soon. Sorry to keep you waiting. We’ve had too much going on the past little while. We got a hyper active puppy (in addition to other dog). On the same day we got the puppy we all caught covid (my wife and I and all three kids). An now we’re into spring time projects and building a big chain linked fence area for the dogs. Anyway, I haven’t been able to focus on great content for a little bit :(. But I’ll be back soon!
@@wplearninglab Soooo glad to hear that! I use the knowledge gained from your tutorials nearly every day. Can't wait to watch some new content when your honey-do list is done =)
Haha @ ‘honey-do list’. I haven’t heard that expression before. Sadly, that list will never be done. Luckily, honey has somewhat flexible schedule for some of the list.
@@wplearninglab Honey-do lists have a funny way of replenishing themselves after each chore you complete, don't they?!? =)
Just set up Wordpress on a subdomain for the first time, and it went great because of this video. Thanks!

Out of all the countless hours I have wasted on youtube this by far has been the best video I have watched in 15 years... i do not know why they'res dislikes on the vid but... something must be wrong with their lives....
Thanks Jamaal! I appreciate your kind feedback :)
You're so awesome. Thank you so much. I had to develop a new website for an existing one and wanted to create something completely new without cloning the existing website. This tutorial was just my perfect search. Thanks once again' took lot of time to figure out everything using a different cPannel' but at the end am successfully in.
I’m happy I could help Jess ;) Great work!
Great tutorial. I think it was good that you missed some of the credentials. It gives a troubleshooting side to the whole thing. I look forward to more of these.
Hi Carmelo,
The feedback on including errors like I did in this video has been mixed. So it's the only video I did that for. Instead I now have videos for all the common errors that could be encountered. If someone says they received a certain error I can direct them to the video that solves that problem :)
@@wplearninglab Thanks for your reply. I have one problem though. When I go to "Manage User Privileges" and hit "make changes", nothing happens. There is no "success message". Thus, when go back to "current databases", the "privileged users" is still blank. I did it couple of times. I even left it for 15 mins. Any thoughts?
THANK YOU!!! I've been looking for something like this for WEEKS!

Wow! Your video makes adding WP t0 a new sub domain seem easy. The "mistakes" you factored in help reinforce understanding. Nicely done!
Hi Bjorn! This was a great tutorial. I would love to try this. I have a couple of question though. What advantages does installing a Wordpress in a Wordpress give you? Does it increase your ability to add more plugins and easing the plugin load on the original site? Or does the original site need to work harder? Curious about the 'Pros' and 'Cons'.
Did you get an answer?

@@Lunar.cipher You do it when you have a need to hold a separate website but on the same domain. For example, sometimes bi-lingual websites are better of built separately for few reasons. but you still want to pay for only one domain. another reason is to hold a staging environment. Hi Shani, there are a lot of processes in WordPress and websites that haven't changed for a long long time. I've been putting sites on the subdomains like I showed in this video since 2009 :)
A lot of the 'technical' stuff is just point and click too. You just need to know where to point and click.

Excellent Tut. Very clear, great pace, and I frankly love that you didn't edit out the little error(s). I like that because it not only shows where things might go wrong, it shows how to fix those things. It also shows that even a guru can step in it (so to speak). Another terrific tutorial from your excellent channel, thank you.
Hi Steve, thanks for observing and enjoying the errors! They would be so easy to edit out, but I agree with you, there is a lot of value in fixing the errors.
As far as 'stepping in it', I do that all the time, lol. Every WordPress site, every hosting account, and every setup is slightly different and things change all the time. So a lot of times things don't go exactly as planned. All that to say, I think the real value isn't being able to do everything on the first try, it's knowing enough to get started and knowing what do when things go sideways.
Anyhow, thanks for watching Steve!

Sometimes some hosts can take a while to set up subdomains. I would try again in a little while. Also make sure you try with a different browser. If you’re using Google Chrome, it can cache webpages that aren’t cleared even when you clear your cache and cookies.

Just found this tutorial and I have been looking for this for a while. Would be great to know when this is useful, what are the advantages of breaking up a website in sub-domains as opposed to all in one. For example, I have a website that has a store, news aggregator, blog, community and lms. I was thinking of breaking it up to have the store in a sub-domain and the LMS as well. Thanks Bjorn!!!
Hey Nadma,
Great question! Off the top of my head, the big advantages of using sub-domains are that you separate your lines of business into different WordPress instances and you can have very different site configurations (plugins and themes) in each subdomain site.
That matters because if one site goes down for some reason, the others are probably still online and working. Unless there’s an issue with your hosting.
If you have separate plugins to configure your store, news aggregator, blog, community and LMS then you probably have A LOT of plugins running on your site. That can lead to slower site speed.
The big disadvantage of having sub domains is you now have a WordPress site to manage, to log into and to maintain in each subdomain. You can use a plugin like MainWP to make management easier.
I hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!
@@wplearninglab Thanks so much!! Also, i guess another disadvantage would be you need to buy more than a single license for pro plug-ins? If you happen to have the same pro plugin installed on more than one sub-domain - like elementor pro for example.
wonderful, it works great.... but could you tell me, when I build a site (for a customer) this way in my subdomain, can I just copy the total folder(to the customers webspace) when the customer is happy with what I build in my subdomain? thnx very much

Many thanks, as a subscriber (and notified) I have learned all about WP from here in a very short time. Two questions. (1) I want to port two existing websites (backp & restore) from other domains to my development site into sub domains for further development. Once completed, is it possible then to backup and restore in original domains? (2) Which is best and more-or less why, sub-domains or sub-directories? You do great work - it is much appreciated.
Hi Pierre,
Thanks for being a subscriber, I appreciate it!
(1) Yes, you can migrate your sites from development back to the original domains. I have a video on this channel on how to replace a live site with a completed development site. It's basically a regular migration.
(2) I don't think there's a big difference between using subdomains or subdirectories. They're both the same amount of work. If you have clients viewing their dev sites then subdirectories may look a little more professional though.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Question- If you make a subdomain like in this video- and make a new database and everything for it. If you want to then move it to your main domain, can you just follow your other video? "Migrate wordpress site from a subdomain to replace production site"? I watched that video, and I just get confused because you have to create another database in that one as well. (Sorry if this question is confusing) and thank you for your help in advance :)
Good question. Those two videos were not really designed to be follow-ups of each other, so it's a bit confusing.
The way you described it is correct. You don't need to make a new db when moving your site from the subdomain to the main domain because the db is in the same hosting account.
You should be able to simply copy the files from the subdomain folder into the main domain folder. The part you have to watch out for is the permalinks and the URL. Make sure to change the URL in the database after you move the site to the main domain.
Either in Settings > General or in phpMyAdmin if you can't login. Not having the URLs updating can cause login issues.
Once you're logged into your site go to Settings then Permalinks. Scroll to the bottom of the Permalinks page without making any changes and click on Save. That should fix all redirect issues.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Thank you a bunch! I love your videos and they are so helpful! You make working with wordpress a lot less scary!
Cool, thanks! I'm happy they help :)
Hi I have bridge theme... instead of choosing one them... could I mix n match... could I create one site from different pages of others?

Hello thanks for your videos. i have a question, i have a theme installed in a subdomain i want to switch it to be in th main domain how can do that?
Guys just wanted to ask is it better to install in subsomain or subdirectory? I want to create one of those for testing purposes like experiment and practice. Or should I just get a totally new domain/hosting and do my testing there?
What's the difference between doing it this way and the way other tutorials suggest with setting up Multisite on Wordpress, changing the .htaccess and wp-config files?
Something doesn't work for me, after creating the subdomain and copying wordpress files I'm still getting "This site can’t be reached - server IP address could not be found."?
Sometimes it can take a while for the server to update and show the subdomain properly. And sometimes settings in your hosting account can be the problem. If it doesn't work after a few hours I would contact your host's support team and ask them to look into it.
I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!

Lovely video sir. Learn something new. However, do you have a video for posting recent blog posts from your WordPress blog subdomain on your main WordPress domain home page? It's so hard to pull off and I just don't want to use a multisite network config just yet. I don't understand it. Well. Why I want this setup is the blog link just remains there. Your visitors may move from one category to another while the navigation just sits there, BLOG! So I decided the blog should get its own dedicated WordPress Install. Again lovely video.
Thanks, neat and clean step by step guide
How long does it usually take until you get access to your subdomain? It seems it takes a bit of time to propagate on the internet.
If you're not migrating your domain name at the same time, it should be instant. What happens when you try to access your subdomain?
hi is it worth having a blog on a subdomain and having the shop on the main domain ? .. or is it better to have it all in one domain ?
could you please advice what are the benefits and pitfalls of this. thank you :)
+Ahsan Ghaf Good question! The biggest benefit is if one site breaks, the other(s) will still be working. The biggest pitfall is that you'll have multiple WordPress installs.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Would this be the best way to manually build a new site and then use Duplicator to transfer the new site to the old site when doing rebuild?
Hi James,
This is definitely a good way of doing that and I did in the past when a client wants access to a site while it's being developed. It's never a great thing to give client's access during development, but some demand it. These days I pass on those types of clients.
You can build sites locally and then use duplicator or All-in-One WP Migration (tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/n45K2PYSAmo/видео.html ) to transfer the site to live.
Here's a tutorial on how I set up my local environment on your computer: ruclips.net/video/nVi13qWdcvE/видео.html
I hope that helps James :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!
@@wplearninglab Hey Bjorn thanks so much for the fast reply.
I left another reply on another video wondering how to do a rebuild on a really bad html site a client has and do the rebuild in Wordpress keeping it on their same hosting and domain but what do I do about the old html urls?
I am assuming a 301 redirect of all old html urls to the new urls on the WordPress rebuild.
The urls would all be the same, just not have the .html extension. Would that be correct?
Hi there, thank you for the video! Actually, for all videos, you're doing. I've followed all the steps but my subdomain didn't appear. it says 'Sorry, the website .. cannot be found'. Any ideas how is possible to troubleshoot? thank you indeed!
Hi Sandra,
Thanks for your kind words!
I would first double check to make sure the files are in the correct folder. If the files are in the correct folder then you should be able to see "something" when you go that URL. So that suggests the DNS has updated to include the subdomain yet. This problem sometimes resolves itself. I would also contact your host's support to see if there is something in your hosting account that could be blocking subdomains.
I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
thank you for your reply! it´s very kind. The problem was Cloudflare. And thank you for your videos one more time.

Hi and thank you so much for this .. I did all the steps created the subdomain..but my end result when I type into webbrowser web address was 404 page > no sign of wordpress .. I am with siteground .. are you able to suggest what I might have done wrong. the only thing I am concerned about is in my file manager.. there is cgi-bin file and all the word press files are in that .. is that right or not meant to be set up this way.. argh.. what should I do .. thank you
Hi Jannette,
I think you probably may be easily fixed. Since the cgi-bin folder inside the folder that bears the name of your subdomain? If so, you should be able to move all the WordPress files one level up into the subdomain folder. Make sure you don't put the files into the root folder where the main WordPress site lives, that would create a big mess.
WP files should not go into the cgi-bin folder. Once the cgi-bin folder is empty you can actually delete it.
Let me know how it goes!
