  • The Bikeability Series is all about showcasing what it is like to be a cyclist in a city with a broken bicycle network. During this series, we will show you what cycling infrastructure currently exists, and suggest routes to take to safely get to where you need to go.
    The Bikeability Series originally focused on Hamilton-Wentworth, but we are happy to announce that it will be expanding into Burlington Ontario (and possibly other regions) in 2023.

    There were 2 cars in the bike lane. That's normal, especially around Shorty's nd Bernie's Tavern.

    excellent video - thanks :) i ride east on cannon a lot on my commute home from Burlington - i fully expect vehicles to pull out and not look for me (even had two police cars do this!) so I prepare each time

      I'm always prepared to brake suddenly, as well. Which reminds me... I need to tighten my rear brake before I go out for a ride again!

    Two cars collided and one ended up ricocheting into the Cannon. People travel too fast through Cannon and Ottawa all the time.

      Yep, 3rd time in the last 5- 6 yrs the building the Cannon was located got hit. Finally something may be done

      I say the city should take away the lights and install a stop sign. It would be the simplest and cheapest solution, so it could be done immediately. It might back-up traffic on both streets, but drivers will evenutally figure out better routes (i.e. Main Street and Kenilworth Avenue)

    This is quality! Keep it up! A lot of fellow bikers appreciate this kind of content :)

    thanks for this video! alot of the spots you've highlighted are places that have been high risk for me when on my bike. The exit on to Cannon from the Shopper Drug Mart parking lot is also a high risk spot as drivers won't even stop before the bike lane and pull straight out

      Hm, it definitely seems like drivers are in a rush or are impatient, due to something involving Shoppers. I see that the West Avenue entrance/exit actually forces drivers to turn left and either join or cross Cannon Street, so there is no southbound option... perhaps drivers feel "inconvenienced" that they have to go north (briefly) to go south, and therefore are more impatience and irrational. That's scary, if that's the case.

    I go as far as Bay St and then take those bike lanes to Cannon. I get off Cannon at Victoria and head up towards Stinson now due to the # of near collisions with cars I've had. It's sad that cars don't pay attention to cyclists, meaning they are also not looking for pedestrians either. My near collisions have been at Wellington, by the stadium and several of the smaller side streets

      If you're ultimately going to Stinson, may I suggest Bay Street >> Hunter Street >> West Avenue South (from the very bottom of the Keddy Trail) >> Stinson. The biggest issue with that route might be the hill behind the back of City Hall, but other than that I find it has fewer conflict points.

    Great video. Your point is well taken on the Cannon/Sherman intersection. The timing of the lights left me hanging in the middle of the intersection blocking traffic. Very confusing. It was not a great position to be in. In the future I will dismount and walk across Sherman as a pedertrian. Thank you for your video and valued analysis.

      Thank you! I hope the Cannon/Sherman intersection will be improved soon. I do recall seeing a glimpse of a planned map that seemed to add a bike lane to Sherman Avenue, so perhaps it will be addressed when/if they install that.

    How did you feel about the road between Ottawa and Cannon?

    • @HamiltonRambler
      @HamiltonRambler  Год назад

      Crossing Cannon and Ottawa in either direction, I do feel a little "sandwiched" if there are vehicles driving alongside of me. I also feel sandwiched whenever the parking spaces begin at the intersections west of there (i.e. Lottridge, Barnesdale). Moreso when it's a pickup truck, as they are the worst offenders.
