It's kind of boring! Again, I would need more signage to keep me on that trail!
yeah, I have thought the same! What about small businesses to spring up along these bike routes? They could be food joints like Hutch's , bicycle repair places, clothing joints for the beach, fruit stands in summer, even small overnight tourist accommodation. Most places along Hamilton's hundreds of kilometers of trails should be zoned for this!
All the trails in Hamilton should be numbered as they are in San Francisco. This would be number one!!! The signs would be yellow and blue and would probably amount to over 100. The trail to Albion Falls would be #2, the rail trail #3, the radial trail #4, the east escarpment trail #5 ,the bayfront trail #6, Dofasco trail #7 and so forth. This would greatly help to find your way around town if you have a simplified trail map! We need someone at city hall to spend a few pennies to do this!
This spot is generally the warmest spot in Hamilton during the winter, an excellent place for a botanical garden because of its great soils and proximity to the pond in Stoney creek!
There could be a bicycle path independent of Cootes Paradise Road!
I see lots of room here and there on the east side to build bicycle lanes away from the street. Incorporate them if necessary with sidewalks.
Hamilton should number all of its trails to make it easier to go where you want to go! Numbered trail signs should be in yellow and blue. San Francisco does it!! The radial trail could be #1, the rail trail could be #2 and so forth. I' ll bet there would be numbers to at least 100.
You missed showing us the 5 waterfalls on the left of the trail and the beautiful scene to the right over the golf course. I bicycled this as a part if a 30 km circuit starting at Albion Falls and going down the rail trail to downtown and then, I picked up the radial trail
so they should look into paving that sidewalk and make it multi use
your not allowed to ride a bike on the Bruce Trail
burlington absolutely sucks in designing safe road for any one outside a car: there no side walk on 90% of the streets (mostly stroads), and is very very vary dangerous to commute by bicycle on almost any street in burlington. this city really sucks
I found when on trail, no markings so no idea where or how to go.
I find Hamilton has very little way-finding on its trails. We need something better, like what Burlington does on the Centennial Trail.
grew up in hamilton i got out live in the mtns in bc
grew up right there in aldershot and hess village i rode and walked back and forth too many times to count thx god i got out
Great video, just one of the reasons why right on red should be prohibited. I moved to Toronto in june, I’m an experienced bike commuter coming from Mexico City, a very busy city, but I did felt intimidated by those left turns and felt safer taking them as if there were protected left turna for cyclist as you propose. I just don’t see how a kid could make those turns safely.
I am thinking of getting into e-biking and your video is inspiring. Being from outside Hamilton in the Niagara area I was trying to see where there was good parking access to this trail.
There's a parking lot right at the beginning of the paved trail portion near the golf course. There's also street parking along the tracks on Studholme Rd. If you prefer starting at the gravel section, I believe you can just park in the Fortinos parking lot at Main St W and Rifle Range Rd
Thanks for doing the trail. I am extremely navigationally challenged.. would you happen to know if you can get on this trail at the end of Greenhill Ave (by RHV expressway)? Or do you have to go to Lawrence & Mount Albion? Thanks
Beautiful trail; nice description…
This is great background info!
I love protected intersections. Thanks for creating this video. I don’t know graphics or how to make videos but I have ideas for bicycling.
Long leash is not a sign of dog owner sharing the trail, but consuming it all and making it dangerous for cyclists. Yes, I always slow down for dogs, kids and eldery people, but sharing meams caring and it goes both ways.
Cyclists will never get any respect in North America and its ridiculous car culture.
Wonderful video. I ride this quote often and I love it
Just finished watching your Centennial Trail video. I bike this Crosstown trail frequently as well. However when heading East I always turn left at Berwick (not right) and take the separated path along the south side of Dundas (there is no interruption at the golf course -- the path goes on through) so it's a nice ride all the way to Applebee. High weeds line both sides so you have to watch out going around corners, is all. Between Sutton Drive and Bronte Road it's hell, but improvements are slowly being done. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for making this video. Living in West Oakville, I cycle this route once a week, typically combining it with Spruce as you suggest, or Lakeshore. I was surprised to see you take to the painted gutter when the trail came to an end. If you cross to the east side by the Tim Hortons you can take the excellent cycle track all the way down to New Street. Make a left and the separated path continues to Bronte Road. It's just as good on the South side too. When the new Wyecroft bridge is complete, east of the Home Depot we could be looking at a whole new ballgame. Cheers.
Asphalt becomes very hot in the summer. Keep the trails more natural.
I agree 100%. In most of the cases, the 1st driver will, out of impatience, turn right just in front of a cyclist or a pedestrian, but the major danger is the 2nd or even the 3rd driver on auto-pilot following the 1st without even stopping.
The only difference in Toronto is traffic volume. It is not safer to ride a bicycle here. Lack of proper infrastructure is certainly one factor. The other, impossible to change unless strictly enforced, is the lack of driving culture. Too many drivers do not point in their direction, drive over the speed limit and do all kinds of crazy movements....cheers from rambling Torontonian!
Nice video. Hope to see more. But I disagree with paving those path. it will ruin the nature vibe.
Once I got a chance to ride a bike, from Dundas to Hamilton....the same road in your video. It was an amazing experiment. Loved it. I have been there many times since then. Please, please, please, no more roads. I love the trail vibe on that road. That's all attracks me. Running from Brantford to Hamilton via Dundas is on my bucket list. Besides biking, I want to run the entire 34 kilometers at once. If that trail became a road , all of my charms would die.
It IS a great trail and we don't need any more asphalt to add to the carbon footprint. The trail is easy and very enjoyable just as it is.
Those stairs have a rail that you can put your tire in so it's not too bad bringing your bike up.
I just want to say I'm new to cycling this year 2024. I have lived in the downtown core for 20 years and these videos are so handy to show me how to get around the city safely. Keep up the great work! 👍
I always turn down Ferguson around Eastwood park brings you to the foot of the Haida and you follow that trail around the bay into Pier park. No traffic
Nice video. Thanks. I have to say , when researching this trail, there is actually too much information out there 😊. Just want a good start point ( confederation beach?). as we’ll be travelling and staying in Burlington Ont .. .. and I’m guessing we’ll cycle the waterfront to hamilton.. then have to return back the same way.. Will explore options ,. Looking forward to it. Cheers
These were some of Hamilton's first roundabouts, built in the late 90s.
I have live in the downtown core for the last 20 years. I Just started cycling this year. Your videos are very helpful with all the roots I didn't know existed. Keep up the great work
One of stupid road I’ve seen I’m always angry with these road stupid leader of our government
WHY ARE THERE ALUMINUM RAILINGS ON IT??? I WAS APPROACHING HUNTER ST WITH GREAT SPEED AND ENDED UP ON THE SIDEWALK WITH SCRAPES ON MY LEG AND A BROKEN BIKE CHAIN!
Why does Townsend Ave jog south for two blocks just to jog back north?
Bike lane on plains road was drawn by a high city worker. It, in now way, meets a standard 1 metre wide bike lane. And a plethora of other standards that are legislated that Burlington consistently fails to meet. It's landing like Burlington hates cyclists ?
woah
Is that a drone you’re using in front of you? How in the heck does THAT work?
It's a 360 camera on an 'invisible' stick. Just a neat effect that happens when the two lenses are stitched together (they erase the stick)
Fun fact, the house right across kitty hawk was the poltergeist 2015 movie
I didn't realize that. I'll have to watch the movie again to see if I spot it!
Great drone shots and visuals
Thanks! I'm trying to make my videos a little bit more dynamic, so I appreciate that you like the work I've put into this episode.
Over engineering is actually a lack of engineering. Engineering is about calculating the least costly way to achieve the needed functionality and safety margins required. Overengineering is to compensate for not properly calculating both the requirements and the minimal safe way to reach those requirements by having excessive margins which may or may not be beneficial. Usually, in terms of cycling, the over engineering is due to cycling requirements not having been part of the original study for requirements as well as not being well understood. Then there's always the fact that cycling paths are often retrofitted onto existing roads.
You're absolutely right! I'll have to add that bit of information the next time I mention "over-engineering" in one of my videos.
That Ford Fiesta driver at 3:50 clearly doesn't know, how a roundabout works - or doesn't trust you to know it ;)
They must have thought I was traveling too fast to stop. Which is funny because I was only going 30kmh -- significantly slower than what the drivers on that street typically travel at.
Yikes. Hamilton, with only a few exceptions, scares me. The TH&B and some other trails are a wonderful way through the miasma, and Hamilton is surrounded by some stunning areas, but suburban and city Hamilton? To be avoided. I had to stop half way through this video. It was putting me on edge. Cycling can and should do the opposite.
And people wonder why cyclists don't use the bike lanes. If the infrastructure isn't safe, then cyclists will take safer routes (or just not cycle until proper routes are installed.
Really like the inclusion of overhead drone footage in your videos!
Thanks! I. Going to try to have more shots like that in future videos.
I will always ride on side streets over a bike lane unless i have to or that bike lane is protected. All unprotected bike lanes do is make drivers close pass you.
That's understandable. I think must people probably agree with that line of thought. Drivers always seem to center themselves between the curb and the yellow line -- it's like the bike lane doesn't exist to them.
