You could cover the back with fabric once made say as a blanket or if a pillow you won’t see the back at all. Cute square, I really like it! Thanks and congratulations !

I wished each row she would say how many stitches.

The first round is twelve. She put two stitches in every stitch for round 2, 2 x 12 = 24 stitches in the second round. For round 3 she put one stitch in half of the stitches (every other stitch) and 2 stitches in half of the stitches (every other stitch)...
(1 x 12) + (2 x 12) = 36 stitches for round 3. Just keep counting and adding, you can calculate it for yourself so you can double check you have the pattern right! 🙂
