I've watched loads of videos about setting up les pauls. This video is by far the best video I've ever seen in terms of following a logical sequence and all the sections are super well explained. I cannot stress enough the quality of this video. You can tell that a lot of effort and prepararion has been taken in order to put this video together. Simply superb.

He kinda said it all BEFORE he even started! "Its All Connected" so true. I'd add that your sound is only as good as your weakest link....
Let's make all the links strong.
Definitely will need a back and forth but when setting the truss rod and holding the string down at the 1st and 12th fret the saddle height makes no difference, nor does the string gauge. You could do it with a ruler too. It's the best way to ensure you are checking the neck bow without the other elements interfering. By doing this you have the best start for making the fine tuning adjustments of the other elements.
The strings should be roughly correctly tuned before you do any adjustments, to your preferred tuning, there dies need to be tension there, and as close as possible to what it will be at the end (although it's always a back and forth before steps as each effects the other). I would never advise to set up without string tension. Perhaps you misunderstood what I said. I'll have to go back and check.
While I'm learning by doing (repairing a "tortured" 1976 Ibanez 2393 for the first time) this video answers a lot of my questions. Simply brilliant! Thank you so much!!!!

If you don't have a feeler gauge handy, the .015" mentioned in the video is the same thickness as the G string in a set of Super Light (.008 to .038) strings or the B in a set of Mediums (.011 to .050); otherwise check the thicknesses in whatever pack you have laying around for a good approximation.

Hello. Thanks for leaving such a nice comment. Although I think using a feelers gauge helps keep things consistent some people just use something roughly that thickness, like a business card - that may do as a temporary guide.

Thanks. I decided to learn setup on, of all things not my cheaper other guitars, but my 95 LPS. Hasn't been setup for the 10 years I've had it and doubt the guy I bought it from did much of anything. Been watching videos that all say the same thing just in different ways and this one bring it all in on the how and why.

Yes, this one was tuned to standard EADGBE, although the same set up principles apply whatever the tuning.

Thanks for that. I really appreciate the effort that you put in to these videos, particularly the close ups that can really show the detail that people need to see.
One thing I would add is that people should be aware that when adjusting pickup height, if you get the pickup too close to the strings the magnetic field from the pickup can affect the string's vibration, killing sustain and generating unnatural overtones called "wolf tones".
The pickup may not be close enough to touch the strings but could still be close enough to produce wolf tones

@@DevilAndSons Thanks mate, I wish I could say it all went smoothly but I'm about ready to give in and take it to a tech. I've come to understand the Chinese re-issue is a bit shoddy. The screws for the back plate aren't aligned so it drifts up and down and goes out of tune whenever I hit the tremolo, stretch a string or even strum. I spent the last 2 days retuning and retuning then crying myself to sleep.. :'( I'm thinking maybe try putting washers between the screw head and the plate to keep them balanced. And maybe trying a higher gauge set of strings. Would that be worth a go? Otherwise I'm just going to shove blocks in and fix the bridge

@@simonbrown7007 oh no. If it's going out of tune then I think the strings and springs may not be balanced. How many springs have you got at the back? I wonder if it could do with more tension and more springs? Do you notice when it goes out of tune that the tuning goes flat? That might imply an extra spring would help, or tightening the claw that holds them.
Or it could be that something is sticking somewhere.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for this video!! It is the best I have seen and made so much sense and really helped.
My day started bad after watching another video about trying to reduce string buzz by eyeballing the fretboard and turning the truss rod, it only got worse.
I have also been getting annoyed lately how bad my instrument sounded, notes were too sharp (but intonation at 12th was ok)
I found your tunomatic bridge video first then raised my stoptail a lot as as you pointed out my string angle was extreme and strings were catching on the back of bridge, I hadn't even noticed. This reduced a lot of string tension too
Then I found this Video and went through everything step by step, even changed my strings to wind up the peg instead of down, reducing string tension more. (Why do most people wind down as I have always done?)
Using a feeler gauge made setting the truss rod so easy, i dropped my bridge height and raised my neck pickup. Guitar sounds sooooo much better now and reduced string tension means less finger pressure required so lower down notes are not sharp.

According to a video on the Gibson youtube channel featuring there head luthier, when doing all six strings at the same time (such as in there manufacturing process), it makes things easier and reduces the chances of gouging the paint job with the wire ends if you remove the tail piece from the guitar and thread all six strings before reinstalling it.

I have a huge favor to ask, by any chance have you done or can you do a video on setting up a PRS Tremonti single cut? I know there is something out of wack on mine, and i just can't put my finger on it. I have some buzz and the sound doesn't sound as full as it should. just ordered a feeler gauge......my best mate stole mine about 5 years back when he wanted to adjust the valve clearances on his Triumph Dolomite Sprint....oh, happy days.........a real bird puller,H6uk.
Brilliant! This time if you lend it out just keep the one you need for your strings.
Very nice description of truss rod adjustment, saw another video that said tightening the rod will make it "forward bow", while loosening will produce a "reverse bow', the opposite of what you stated. Going to try loosening my truss rod to see if I can get rid of the string buzz, and string snapping at the machine heads.
Thanks for commenting. I'm pretty certain what I said is what normally happens. Tightening the truss causes back bow. When you loosen it there is less tension against the strings that pull it up.

The neck was distorted and required a shim to bring the strings up off of the frets. I was able to tame the buzz, but still have a problem with the machine head, still snapping the string. I tried to file the feed hole to knock down the sharp edge, going to try to restring to see if it will work. Hopefully it won't be a sacrificial set of strings and I can start playing my guitar again. Thanks again for your video, it helped a lot!
