Well the captain is a much better sailor then I am, I am just the deck hand trying to copy stuff I see her doing. On our boat the setup and sail selection is very much aimed at ease of handling.
Congratulations! The boat looks great and sails fast. Regarding motoring on one engine vs two engines. For many years I was using one engine when motoring, but this autumn (and after looking at Yanmar's consumption curves) I did a test on a brand new L450F and it turned out that motoring with two engines at 1500rpm is more economical than using one at 2500rpm, with the speed being more or less the same. But of course it may be different on your new boat as engines and hull are different and there are other considerations, like noise levels, power generation, etc.
We tested that on our L52S with the Yacht Devices fuel flow meters and it’s just not true. Apart from that (and being Dutch) we used 1 engine on 1500 rpm ...
@@CatGreatcircle well, exactly - one has to test it on a specific boat, it is not a general rule. I am pretty sure about my test results, but L52 is a different boat with different engines. And there is no argument that 1x1500rpm consumes half of 2x1500rpm, Dutch or not :) But in my experiment I was interested in maintaining a certain average speed.
on the B&G there is a miles per gallon or liter indicator or the other way around, can't remember exactly but pretty simple to find out per boat indeed. In the end you want to be able to manoeuvres around the anchorage and to be able to sail out of areas with less than 4 knots of wind. You should easily be able to reach 5 or 6 knots using just 3 liters per hour so even the smaller tanks should be more than enough for that purpose. On the L52S we normally refueled with the tanks at 50% and most of the times only once every 2 months. We left the BVI last april with 85% and arrive in NL with almost 80%. Should be even better on the much lighter Outremer
The more I look at it the more I love it, the new 55 is one of the sexiest cats out there rivalling Gunboats imo. You'll turn some heads if you enter a marina or anchorage for sure ;)
In the end your own baby is always the most beautiful so we might be a bit biased. The proof however will be in the sailing and living aboard to confirm that we found the ideal compromise of sailing and liveaboard characteristics
@@CatGreatcircle Very true , and that balance will shift from one person to another . Personally I am leaning even more to the fun fast sailing side . ORC pricing is also lower than Outremer , but the interiors are more spartan .
We choose to be more on the safe side and we had a rapido 60 next to us in Saint Maarten driving us crazy slamming the third hull in the water all the time
@@CatGreatcircle Yep , that 60 does not fold , should be better for the folding 40 and 50 . OTOH , the 60 is mind blowing fast : 27 knots in 20 knots of true wind . I know nothing that comes close , except the 50 and maybe the ORC cats
The advantage of the Rapido compared to other racing multihulls is at least that the chance of ending upside down seems to be significantly lower. Impossible to make the trade off between speed and comfort for someone else but for cruisers like us it seems an easy choice
Hello Mark and Marijke, thank you so much for your lovely channel. My girlfriend and I found it while following the development of the O55. Some day not too far off we hope to be following in the footsteps you're documenting here so well. We have some bluewater experience but are new to cats so my apologies in advance for any incorrect assumptions or if I missed one of these answers in another episode. A couple quick questions if I may. 1) Will you have the same offset chain track and anchor roller as seen on #1? 2) Is there an option to have it integrated with the longitudinal beam and carbon crosspiece or have the anchor roller mounted on the foredeck to bring some of that weight back towards the middle of the boat and eliminate that chain track from the trampoline? 3) How can you tell what position the daggerboards are in or confirm that they are fully retracted? 4) Do you have any concerns about the UV resistance of the dark DFI sails, black carbon mast, and other black accents? Hi Mike, we’ve been sailing monohulls until 5 years ago (apart from our Nacra F18 but that doesn’t count. Plenty of time to answer your questions being locked down and waiting on the new cat. 1) yes it’s the only realistic option in combination with the carbon cross 2) it has been done on the Gunboat but the price is the unrealistic part 3) you definitely don’t want to bring it further back like it’s in the standard for instance on the FP Saona. My Saona friend changed it the other way around as it just wasn’t working there 4) the black should be ok looking at other boats who already have it for a couple of years like 5X BioTrek. The Genoa or self tacking jib in our case has a nice uv protection strip you hardly even see. Looks great.
in our experience we don't use the wheel a lot, as we sail the boat on AP 99% of the time, even during manoeuvres at sea. can't really judge yet how this will work if you want to use the wheel. I always thought it was an advantage of the Lagoon sportop concept over the way FP chose their setup but here you can at least see the plotter when you're standing between the wheel and the winches. It might work out fine, will let you know once we've build up more experience and in more challenging circumstances
Looks great ! and seems to glide smoothly :) I dont't understand the engine controls very well, they are on a dedicated pod in front of a dedicated seat ? Both sides ? Didn't see them on the 3D renders. Also the sheets seem to go through quite a few blocks before reaching the winches, not too much friction involved ?
The electronic ZF throttles are on both sides integrated in the backrest behind the wheel, you can operate them from inside the cockpit as well, and there is a H5000 AP controller just in front of them in the same structure. I can't really judge the friction of the genoa sheets, didn't really have a good look as we won't have a genoa but only one sheet for the self tacking jib.

There’s a lot of flexibility so it’s difficult to say something about THE helm position. The manoeuvring with the wheel all the way inside under the Bimini worked really well. When you put it one position higher up you can control it nice and easy both from within and when controlling the winches. On our #4 most of the lines can be managed from the port helm station. We were very happy with the setup on the L52S but this setup has advantages too. Let’s build up more experience during actual cruising and come back to you with a full comparison later.
@@CatGreatcircle As long as the autopilot is working flawless ... The dealer always say that the helm position is meaningless because you are never sitting there. Maybe until things get taff or you have to watch out for fishing nets etc.
Yep AP is really essential, that’s why we’re installing a fully operational second autopilot that can take over at the turn of a switch. If something really bad happens than of course it would be time to hit the Netflix pause button and wake someone up to help solve the issue. Shit will happen ....

Do you really like the helm position?
There’s a lot of flexibility so it’s difficult to say something about THE helm position. The manoeuvring with the wheel all the way inside under the Bimini worked really well. When you put it one position higher up you can control it nice and easy both from within and when controlling the winches. On our #4 most of the lines can be managed from the port helm station.
We were very happy with the setup on the L52S but this setup has advantages too. Let’s build up more experience during actual cruising and come back to you with a full comparison later.
@@CatGreatcircle Keep us informed, especially after night sailing or bad weather. I can not imagine my wife on night watch in that position.
At night your on the bench inside watching Netflix and the radar 🤣
@@CatGreatcircle As long as the autopilot is working flawless ... The dealer always say that the helm position is meaningless because you are never sitting there. Maybe until things get taff or you have to watch out for fishing nets etc.
Yep AP is really essential, that’s why we’re installing a fully operational second autopilot that can take over at the turn of a switch. If something really bad happens than of course it would be time to hit the Netflix pause button and wake someone up to help solve the issue. Shit will happen ....
