It is such a special treat for me to see the build from start to finish. Your kindness is overwhelming for bringing us along and I really enjoy seeing the excitement on your faces. You have such a large group of followers wishing you well. Best of luck and Happy New Year to come. It is said that without love in a dream it will never come true. Your lives are filled with love from people both near and afar. Your boat looks like it's gonna kick ass.
Loved the side by side view of the 51 and 55. The 55 seems much beefier than the 51 which should mitigate the extra weight of luxury items, as you stated, and a larger and heavier rib. Would be curious to see a 5x next to a 55....please arrange that with Outremer....😊. Enjoy the holidays. As usual, loving your journey and your vlog!
I have an overlay drawing of the 55 on the 5X but I am probably not supposed to share it as it’s a detailed technical drawing. In general I can say that it confirmed to us that the interior size differences between the 2 models are limited, the main difference is in the length of the transom and the bow
@@CatGreatcircle Another question..if you care to indulge me. ...While making your decision with Outremer....did you consider the 5x? The reason I ask is that, in my opinion, the 5x would be difficult to shorthand...even for experienced sailors. Did you guys feel the same...or were there other factors. Thanks!
@@petertorrey4080 we already looked closely at the 5X when we just owned our 52 and were parked next to one on the LGM boat show in 2017. We were already impressed by the exterior looks of the boat but a bit less with the interior. The 5X seems to be designed for more experienced racer/cruisers, but it’s difficult to judge when you haven’t sailed it yourselves. At that point we had only 1,5 years experience on a cat so the 52 was enough of a challenge for us. When our cross beam was damaged on the L52 and we were slowly trying to reach Canet for repairs our feeling that the Lagoon was indestructible was a bit damaged as well. So as we were anchored next to a new Gunboat 68 in Le Grau du Roi we decided to have another look at the 5X again. Even during the holiday they responded and invited us and that’s when they showed us the first concepts of the 55. As you might have seen the next step in convincing us was sending us along with Pierre on 5X Biotrek from LGM to Cannes boat show and we were amazed by the sailing characteristics, speed and above all the silence of the construction even at 35 knots of wind compared to our previous boats. For an experienced sailor like Pierre short handed sailing the 5X is not a problem, we still felt that for us the 55 would be the ultimate compromise. Same construction, similar sailing characteristics, maybe even more interior and storage space, more protection from wind and sun, and easier to handle. Of course the sail plan and deck layout are important in short handed sailing so if the 55 wouldn’t have been introduced we might even have considered the 5X.
Very nice boat, what an improvement from the Lagoon 39 and even from the 52. Spekeend means something in Dutch? I 've found nothing on Google translation. Is there a relation with the Dutch explorer Speke?
Looking forward to making the next step, still a lot to learn before we start the world tour in September. Literally Spekeend means something like Fat Duck (don’t ask me why they chose that name 🤣🤣)
@@CatGreatcircle thanks for the answer. You're my favorite sailing chanel (with le voilier les copains). But why do say "they", didn't you choose yourself your boat name?
Spekeend is the 51 of Marc and Mirella, our 55 is still a couple of months behind them in the assembly hall. We’ve met them during last Outremer week and they will join the same around the world rally (GLYWO 500) as we will
But as Outremer had those skegs on the 51 and 5X and decided not to install them on the 55 their presence must have been questionable. Maybe one of the new 55 owners that had/have a 51 before knows whether they will miss them. I know some use the dagger boards as first point of UFO contact after the triple crash boxes but we don’t have the experience on cats like this to be able to judge it
@@CatGreatcircle maybe someone who hasn’t sailed around lots of crab pots yet? 🙈 But indeed, would be great (again...!) to know more about the trade offs for this!
Haha "you can refueld very cheaply in Gibraltar" - I've got a full Oceanvolt installation but hybrid so have an 18kwh DC genset. So 600l of diesel no wind and no sun gets me 2,400nm...
@@CatGreatcircle Yes I did. But in that episode when the waves were there, it was all downwind sailing, so it is hard to tell. Of course Pierre has a rigid dinghy which is pulled very tight to davits and the whole setup is then quite solid and can probably withstand occasional waves. I would be worried though if waves regularly hit the outboard leg, especially at greater speeds.
Both are daughter companies of Grand Large Yachting and the manufacturing of these two is on the same premises in La Grande Motte. A lot of Gunboat ideas and technologies are transferred to their other brands
What amazed me was how expensive it must be to take the catamaran from the factory door to the water. Trucks, Cranes and a team of riggers - that must be thousands or Euros.
They may get a discount on crane and truck 🤣, but seriously there are many people working on those cats for a pretty long period so it’s understandable that boats like this are quite an investment
Flinke investering, zeker.

@@CatGreatcircle Thanks! I've just googled it and read the story of Gunboat and how it ended up in France. I thought that Outremer was an owner but now I know :)
Some of the “old” Gunboat employees might not agree but the group seems to have a unique position with many different brands, ideas and technologies under one umbrella. The benefits for Outremer are quite visible but the other way around the new Gunboat look way better than the previous models (I know, subjective but still)
@@CatGreatcircle As with any other company with ownership change, if the core values and principles are maintained - then the brand will benefit from such position (within the new ownership). Many have failed, but many have not. Gunboats had/have the reputation and price tag with it - which attracted people who wanted exactly that. Only time will tell if Gunboat turns into a luxury (by fittings and furniture) brand, building on name of the past. Or - it will be what it was, albeit prettier 😄
Do you mean on the 51 or the 55? The helm position seems to be a topic not everybody agrees on, we were in love with our L52S helm station. On a performance cat there doesn’t seem to be enough room to keep the boom low and create a similar setup at the same time but maybe a smart designer will find an even better solution. We’ll have to find out for ourselves on our O55 in different circumstances yet before giving our final judgement but so far on the first sail it worked pretty well, both with the wheel inside and outside. For us the current solution on the 55 was an important factor to choose this model over the other Outremer models and especially over other brands with the helm stations on the stern
I'm talking about the boat in the video at 0:26 - so it should be the 51 without the in/out option. In fair weather this looks like a great place to be. But in fair weather almost any place on a cat is great. In rough seas I wouldn't want to be on the outside of the boat. This reminds me of some of the hideous FP helm positions. I'm looking forward how you like your helm - especially compared to the Lagoon. 👍

Dinghy davits on both 51 and 55 in the video look a bit low to me (esp. if one has a bigger outboard). Which davits system are you getting on your 55?
