I love asking you guys question when it has to do with free speech. The answers are usually so interesting. Hope yall have a great day/night! I'm going to go under the covers. I was really excited for this week, so of course I got sick... :)
Hello from Puerto Rico so glad you talked about our issues , over here people don't know what there going to do and we are worried of the future of our island. Makes me feel better to hear people outside of Puerto Rico talk about it
People talk about this attempt at changing our commonwealth status as if it is the only one ever. We've been a commonwealth for over a hundred years, this is not the first time we've tried to be treated fairly! It was executed poorly this time, timing isn't perfect but isnt a hundred years enough??
Hi there bro from Puerto Rico. If you all would kindly stay independent that would be great. As our country can't afford your debt or another massive addition to welfare as we all ready have enough leeching from the government. Sorry : / But then again it's not up to you or a majority vote. Because this country is still a republic. Best of luck out there
I'm kind of curious as to the reason why Puerto Ricans wouldn't want Puerto Rico to be a state in the U.S. I'm admittedly kind of ignorant of the issue, but wouldn't statehood bring more political power and economic prosperity to Puerto Rico? Puerto Rico being a territory seems kind of like a U.S. state without some of the benefits. I guess paying more in taxes would be one thing, but considering the dire financial situation it almost seems like it would be a good idea to become a state. Is it an independence thing?
The reason why Puerto Rico is so poor is because US hedge fund people use it as a tax haven. If Puerto Rico was under all laws of the land, including tax laws, they probably wouldn't be in so much debt. In this case, you have to look at why they're in debt, not just that they are.
I agree, and plus I am from Puerto Rico myself, and lived there for the first 12 years of my life. I moved away just a year ago, and I personally agree that one of the biggest reasons why Puerto Rico is in debt is because of the U.S. government not financially supporting it. I think that making Puerto Rico a state of the U.S. could deeply affect its financial state, government, the island on its own, as well as the people.
LunaFirefly So you're only 13? You are an incredibly articulate 13 year old. I may have to rethink my position on the American education system. Props mate.
So I looked it up and a public in theater in Minnesota did a similar thing in 2012 with an Obama look-a-like, and there were not corporate sponsors pulled at all. Also, Kingsmen: The Secret Service portrayed an Obama like person dying as well. I think the problem is that what they did was not a Trump target, but it was simply putting whoever the president was in Julius Cesar's role.
Dan Calvano Or are YOU the racist for assuming he assumed the president was Obama? Or am I the racist for mocking SJWs? The SJW is very confusing, indeed. P.S. I think "SJW logic" is an oxymoron
@the military and normal channel - see what you did there is speculation, its like me going "of course conservatives don't like it, they have no class and are hypersensitive and they'll ruin anyone dare go against them" - it's false; its a bullshit exaggeration. And what's better is someone here has stated there are productions where things were changed to Obama, no one went to jail, and you insist otherwise. Maybe read a bit, maybe actually look at whats going on instead of living in some partisan world of us vs them.
@robert23456789 You mean Trump supporters, because not even SJW douche bags would hop on that train. Nothing to gain from it unless you backed that pile of ignorance.
Alex B He did not get compensated by the state, from what I read. There is a GoFundme for him. Sucks that he has to rely on private donation though. The state really fucked up and they should at least try to help the poor man.
As of 2012 24 states didn't offer any compensation for wrongful convictions. Most offer a pittance and some also revoke the compensation if a guilty plea is made. Of the remaining "good ones", about 6 or 7 offer what is in my opinion pathetic compensation. The remaining states offer either reasonable(ish) compensation (e.g. $50k/year minimum with no limit in Alabama with $2M limit in Florida) or they don't have any statutes on the books at all. Not having a statute is a mixed blessing as you may get peanuts or win the lottery depending on how egregious the injustice.
In 2012 the Guthrie did a production of Julius Caesar with Obama portrayed the way Trump is being portrayed now. Also sponsored by Delta. No mention of that? Really?
Really??? Great to know. If true, Surprising this was not met with the same kind of public outrage and not at all surprising it is not being mentioned in the news
This whole referendum here in PR was a joke. It cost around 7 million dollars to put together and really nobody wanted it due to the status of the island being the least of our problems at the moment, as evidenced by the low numbers at the polls. This is our 5th referendum since the 60s and our last one, in 2012, had statehood win by a significant margin and nothing happened. If we were more economically stable then, what makes our joke of a governor think that "they have to listen now" when the island is facing it's worst economic recession in its history? Just hearing him saying that once we become a state all our problems disappear, and that we'll be a real asset to the US makes me angry.
Hello Phil. Thank you for covering what's going on here in Puerto Rico. The government and economy issues here are a shitshow. I do have to say that I believe statehood won't solve our problems magically like the government here seems saying but we'll see. Schools closing and the inmense debt are the most worrying problems we have right now. Love from 🇵🇷!
Elam Raul Colon why would you want to remove your title as Puerto Ricans and give your sovereignty to the US and become "Americans". Why can't people be independent.
Peglegkickboxer I'd like to explain it to you in a simple way but its too much. I encourage you to read about our history with the US or watch a couple of videos John Oliver made about it. In short, we are a war trophy for the US. We were conquered by Spain and then later given away to the USA as spoils of war. Since then, we became dependant of the US for everything. Our economy, government, health programs and education system are all american. Since then there have been three mayor parties. One seeks independence from the US. Another wishes to remain as we are right now (a colony, basically), and the one currently in power seeks statehood. To oficially and completely become part of the US. Trough decades of mismanagement, irresponsable use of funds and resources, our government started taking big loans and abusing federal aids. Right now, we can't pay that debt. In order to keep the island functioning, they are closing schools, reduced the minimum salary to people under 25 years of age and our health system is shit. Many people see statehood as the only way out of the crisis. See, is not as simple as just "being independent". I believe in independence but I must admit, it would be suicide to be independent with such a debt. But statehood wont solve much either.
Elam Raul Colon Yes, very true. I'm also from PR, and I currently study in UPR. One of the best universities in the island that provide students that don't have the money or transportation to go to a private university, to come and study in a public one. And it pains me that they are also closing our universities because the government are cutting our universities and degrees to pay the debt. I'm clearly obligated to study in a private school and it suck because now I might have a massive debt to pay back and it's not easy because there isn't any jobs. If we Puertoricans can get our shit together, we can be independent. It might be difficult but it can be way better to be able to make our own island and we could even ship and sell shit to other countries without having to be controlled by the US. Because (not-fun fact) what we make here has to be shipped to the US (and that cost) to then "re-selled" in PR 2x more expensive that it initially was. But the only reason we also want statehood is to be able to vote for the president that affects us so terribly and not be able to say shit cuz guess what, we mean nothing to them. It's like a goddamn abusive marriage and we can't get divorced.
A large reason for Puerto Rico's debt is the United States tax. Although they are considered citizens it's been basically taxation without representation for years. The Jones Act forces Puerto Rico to buy all goods going into the island from America. So items from China would first have to be bought by an American company and than sold to Puerto Rico. Much of it ends up with at lest a 35% tax/mark up. When you're a small island, pretty much everything aside from food is imported, and American companies can basically pick their price. There's no walking away from America at this point either. They can remain a territory, which is like a side chick living in the projects, or they can move up. Being a part of America doesn't stop you from being Puerto Rican. You meet someone from Boston, they say their from Boston. You meet someone from LA, they say their California. I'm an American born and raised but I say I'm Puerto Rican. I'm proud of my heritage and my island but nothing will change unless they get a voice and accept that they can no longer exists without America. Like I said right now their basically a side piece, they have the title citizen but none of the perks. Being from a state and saying your from that state, (like Floridians) is like being from Puerto Rico and saying your Puerto Rican it doesn't change the fact that we're all Americans already. I really wish more light would be shed on what's happening in Puerto Rico and the unjust taxation so the rest of American can open it's eyes to yet anther problem we have in our own back yard. (other side of the swimming pool of course) I also understand that the American government has tried to help Puerto Rico's debt issue, but even the Senate basically said it was like slapping a bandaid on. It would not fix their actual issues. Only becoming an actually state and getting the full federal support it comes with can actually help.
Any chance of covering the UK election results? Unexpected result and a DUP-Conservative alliance is very risky if Northern Ireland reverts to direct rule.
Daniel Kintigh It be pretty dope if he set up an international news show that uploaded in the mornings (US mornings, afternoon and evenings for everyone else) along side his normal PDS.
As a Puerto Rica I must say you got the information incredibly correct, most mainstream media's don't actually cover the actual important things. I think PR being the 51st state wont happen, not only because of the boycott but also because I think Congress doesen't really care much about PR and its economic situation. But in my eyes this can go either two ways. PR does become the 51st State or PR becomes a fully independent country, which might happen if nothing is done to solve PR's economic crisis. Eventually people will get tired of waiting for "things to get better" and might just want independence. For me, I'm neutral in the situation.
I'm also Puerto Rican, and I'm not sure if PR would be able to become a fully independent country because of the debt crisis that's going on. It would be a dream if it could become a country, but they just don't have the funds, and that's just really heart breaking to me because the island is like my second home.
Nahuel Diaz it's really cool getting to hear the perspective of someone who actually lives in the country of focus. Everyone else can just spew their ideas, but the people of importance are the ones being directly affected.
Hell no it's not a good idea. Even with American oversight the politicians still found a way to bankrupt the island. Imagine what they'd do without it.Thats the whole reason my fam and I left the island.
Blaring an air horn in someone's face is a Physical Assault, and if what that large man did with the air horn was done to me then i would have had the instant reaction of defending my self just like this camera man did except my swatting away of the air horn would most likely have been a punch to the face.
Sanzofunke agree. that seems to be most ignored in the comments but that dude had a serious attitude problem that is becoming more and more prevalent. this trend of "I can do whatever I want but all responses to my actions make me a martyr/victim" is horrid. every action warrants an equal response and placing yourself in someones personal space and blowing an airhorn warrants being pushed tf back.
David Bayliss it is. Airhorns most certainly can cause damage to your hearing and incredible discomfort if blasted that close to your head. The effect may not even be lasting but neither is being tazed or pepper sprayed, both being an assault. Heck there are even militarized sound devices because it can be just as effective to hurt somebody with sound as most other non lethal weapons
David Bayliss it is tho, sound is just the pulse that vibrates all the molecules between you and said air horn thus literally creating a violent physical reaction, rattling your ears drums to shit tis assault
Whether you like our president or not. You should still show respect to the President of the United States. Past presidents would be rolling in their graves to see what this nation has become.
having actually read Julius Caesar and knowing it's plot, I feel this is an inspired and thought worthy modern representation of current issues through the timeless writings of Shakespeare. Essentially it is theater done right in my opinion. The parallels between Caesar and POTUS, US and Roman Empire are significant. It's not an attack on Trump, it is a retelling of a relevant issue using current representations of the original preface.
!00% agreed. This controversy shows how sensitive we've become to just 1 moment and only react to it. A moment doesn't paint a complete picture as to what's happening. Sure, you get the action, but you don't get all the information that brought people to that moment, or the repercussions thereafter. How many times has something happened that has gone viral and people are in outrage over it only for the rest of the story to come to light that paints a completely different picture?
On the play thing, Julius Caesar was the good whose death brought a giant civil war to Rome. The war was won by Octavius(later named Augustus) who then based the newly formed Roman Empire on Julius Caesars values and beliefs. So to me the play paints Trump as the good guy and the senators who stab him as the bad guys. The message to me is that Trump and his values will form a renewed and great USA, whether you agree with Trump or not, comparing him to Julius Caesar paints him more as a hero than anything else.
Democracy is evil, which is why America isn't one. According to our Constitution, we aren't supposed to allow any law that enforces or prohibits any religion.
TheChiller007 See that's where you're wrong. They say its a thinly-veiled Muslim protest. If its against Sharia law and Muslims say Sharia law doesn't represent all of us (which I would hope it doesn't) then it can't be an Anti-Muslim protest, can it? It boils down to this, either Sharia law does represent all Muslims or this was just an anti Sharia law protest in which case, there should be NO counter-protesters.
right or left, right or wrong, pro or anti.. it really doesn't matter anymore. debating and arguing reasonably is becoming a relic of the past. We live in a time where people believe that whoever screams louder is technically the winner
If the opposition can't get a word in edgewise then they LOSE be default, common sense really. tbh you're probably just jealous of my 70+dB debating skills. ~get good soon scrub.
Hey Phil, I've been watching your show for years now and I just wanted to chime in about Puerto Rico. about the unemployment rate, a lot of the jobs in the island are what would be considered "illegal" jobs as they don't get taxed for them and aren't considered official. so that's why the unemployment rate can seem so high even though it's not. Puerto Rico is looking to become a state so it can go into full bankruptcy which it can't do while it is a Commonwealth, also this whole debt was mainly due to bad managing of the countries finances and something called the Jones act, a law limiting our ability to trade and exponentially increasing the cost for goods which with out it would cost us 1 3rd of the price. the Puerto Rican people are proud hard-working people just like Americans, please help us help ourselves just like you helped Detroit. once we go into bankruptcy we will rebuild and prosper once again. please up vote this comment so it can get on the Friday show and they can see the POV of a real Puerto Rican and member of this awesome community.
i ddnt voted either ,bunch of clowns we have for leaders ,its the same like when ppl voted for one senate, they only take it serious when its for their advantage
Whether you agree with Lauren Southern's political opinions or not, you gotta respect her. She goes into the middle of violent protests even though she has been repeatedly attacked both verbally and physically. She doesn't back down from people challenging her viewpoints, and she continually tries to show what is happening in the face of danger. Edited: grammar
As someone who saw the Shakespeare production myself a few weeks ago, it was clear that it was less anti-Trump and more anti-assassination. Killing "Trump" (Caesar) led to the military and police (Octavius and Antony's armies) attacking and killing the other Democrats (Senators) as well as general civil uproar and violence. Anyone who is complaining or calling this anti-Trump has clearly never read Julius Caesar, because the theme was very much against the killing of Caesar. I also want to add that the playbill said that it was about (paraphrasing) "one event, the murder of of the democratically elected leader, ended democracy for almost the next two centuries."
they have the right to portray trump in theater but they also have to deal with the consequences which isn't any law but how people react to it. then again I severely disagree with burning the American flag but feelings have no place in law
For me, this just strengthens the "ignorant americans" stereotype. Anyone who isn't ignorant about the subject would hardly see this as encouraging an assassination. And even if you someone doesn't know history, the least they could do is look up the play and see that it's a tragedy.
The Trump-Julius Caesar thing probably would have been better received after Trump was no longer president, but the point of Julius Caesar in terms of the Shakespeare play is that he's a tragic hero, so really you're supposed to like him or at least feel sorry for him towards the end. If anything, this production has just made regular people experience the play in a more modern and relatable way what with all the extreme feelings towards Trump nowadays.
Interesting viewpoint.... still,I highly doubt that the people who are putting on the play are meaning it the way that you are seeing it. Looks like just another attempt at depicting the president being brutally murdered and hiding behind "artistic expression" from any real criticism.
Not to mention the fact that the Civil War that followed after Julius' death gave rise to the Roman Empire, one of the greatest civilizations recorded in human history. To think Barron would start the American Empire!
In the play, Caesar's death isn't a good thing. It's a cautionary tale about subverting democracy. And no one seemed to have a problem when the President represented by the title character was Obama (as was the case in a 2012 production at The Guthrie Theater).
If ACT for America is truly against Sharia law for the reasons they say they are, then I fully support them. No one, God or Mankind, has the right to govern the individual in how they live their life so long as they aren't hurting anyone.
Actually, God has every right to govern mankind... He created humanity, so He gets to make the rules. If Allah is real, and Muhammad is His true Prophet, then tough luck, them's da rulez. Personally, I do not believe either... I know this wasn't exactly your point, just saying.
Thank you for being someone I can use to back up my argument in class assignments. It makes it easier to quote someone that says things better than I can, but shows what I feel and think.
I think this just emphasizes the hyper-sensitization our society has become accustomed to in recent years. Literally anything someone says can trigger anyone nowadays and they have to apologize for hurt feelings. On the other hand, I don't believe many people were talking about assassinating Obama, whereas CNN had a whole segment about what would happen if Trump was assassinated on Inauguration Day of all days.
Sadly - Sharia Law is being implemented as written - a province in Indonesia just did this, not to mention many places in EU and UK - so it is a true threat to freedoms which all people should have. No matter your binary or non-binary identification, race, sexual orientation or affiliation - we all should be against Sharia Law, anywhere. How anyone can defend this indoctrinated, extreme oppression and aggression is beyond me.
Thank you so much on letting your public know what going in Puerto Rico (at the island at the moment)! Really means a lot you consider us to be part of your news!
... But Persona 5 taught me that blaring an airhorn in someone's face was assault because it causes bodily harm. Do the people doing that and not getting arrested here mean that a video game lied to me? Seriously though it should be assault, how can intentionally doing something that can cause someone hearing damage be OK?
So American Election covered, French Election covered..... but no UK Election covered.... especially since 1 of the 2 top comments from your tweet of 'what topics should i cover?'. I like you Phil, i enjoy your content, most of your stances and how you talk about the news, i also know you don't have time for everything, nor can cover everything, but surely you could take 1 f*cking day off US politics to talk about European, Asian or African politics if a big enough story. This was HUGE for Europe. You covered Brexit, and the negotiations start next Monday. This election blows everything up and makes things way more difficult for the UK and the rest of Europe, but nothing at all. Seriously, you know that at least 35% of your viewers are outside the US. Can you please take a few days off US news for maybe 1 day. We hear about it every day and hear about Trump and something 'new' every day. When this one was a non story, people would know with 1 day that the 'trump was stabbed' wasn't true, no matter how little you pay attention to news. just give your other subscribers something every now and again. There's a world outside the US.
For Hinguerez Ah yes, because you drown out everything over there because you think you're the best at everything. MURICA!!! I'm amrite BRO!!!! This is like reading ignorance off a page.
J Tevo The reason Philip Defranco covers so much news about America because he's American. Unless it has international importance, there isn't much point in reporting on it
Phil, I imagine this's going to be drowned out in the comments section, there's already almost 9000 comments, but as an English/NZ citizen (living in south London), daily viewer, is your new news thing going to step outside America/RUclips? I value your unbias news-take, hence why I watch, but man, you miss 75% of the things that matter to me, and I'd be more excited for the PhillyDNewsNetwork if I knew that wasn't going to be the case.
CaptainMcAwesomepan I think he's said this before but as one of the worlds major powers (and arguably the only superpower in the world) politics in the states can have effects on the rest of the world which is one big reason why he usually covers US politics, but as a NZer myself, I agree. It'd be nice to see him cover the going ons of other countries.
Well he is American, makes sense that most of the things he would cover would deal with the country where he lives, and where this website is based. That being said he does cover stories outside of america if they're sufficiently big enough (i.e Manchester, or Qatar)
He did mention that, at some stage, he would start employing people from different countries to contribute after he's sorted his own back yard. Though I do think it would be unintentionally hilarious to have an American try and decipher Kiwi culture and politics. Considering all but the most right wing of our political parties would be considered dangerously liberal and socialist by US standards :)
Hey Phil I just wanted to say thank you for all the entertainment you've given me. These last couple of days in my life have been nothing less then horrible. Me and my mother was kicked out of my house by my stepdad then after a couple of hours things just went back to "normal" while I've been staying you of the house. Anyways I just wanted to say thanks and keep up the amazing work.
Here's an common sense thought on sharia law: How many other races, or religions come to America, trying to advocate the law of their government, on foreign soil? Why is separation of church and state ok for "christianity", but not for Islam?
it is "ok" because nowhere in the bible does the bible become more than a spiritual/religious guide. the quran on the other hand tries to regulate every aspect of life - it's not only a spiritual scripture but also a political one, a financial one and it aims at controlling everything. so any laws that don't go with islam/quran/sharia law are automatically void and nonexistant. there can be no true separation of church and state in islam, because church IS state for islam.
And yet, no one cares about the Beth Din..Jew zealots have not smacked planes into our buildings (real, or not). (I'm Jewish btw) Remember: Taqiyya Tawriya Maruna Kitman
It is for both, no one was ever advocating for sharia law other than crazy Muslims and maybe radical leftists that actually make up less than a percentage of the party as a whole.
Can someone give me a reason why we shouldn't march against sharia? If anything is seems like something we should all be on board for, regardless of its actually coming to the west, Muslims here should be joining in
Reality Forge You are absolutely right. Sharia law is insanely stupid and has no place in any society anywhere. But, that being said, I feel like a lot of those protesters were marching against Islam as a whole. Marching against a religion equally has no place in any society.
A lot of people probably going to prefer the Sharia Law debate here, that's a headache I don't need. Puerto Rico's vote though... I admit "Not voting" is an interesting tactic to have every non-vote count for you but it's also not democracy. Here in Britain we had a BREXIT Vote last year (Not opening the can again, just citing an example.) I voted to remain and we lost by less than 4% of voters but only 72.21% of eligible voters came to the polls. That's an extraordinarily high turnout for the UK BUT... If we'd counted the 27.79% of people who didn't vote as therefore voting for the 'status quo' then Remain would have won. I don't agree that a campaign of "Don't campaign/vote" should automatically assume the privilege of non-voters support. It's un-democratic. If you give a shit, vote. It's that simple. 97%, even of a 1% voter turnout is a win. If the other 99% didn't want that result, they should have voted.
Basically, the PIP (Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño "Puerto Rican Independence Part") gave the PNP (Partido Nuevo Progresista "New Progressive Party" [pro-statehood]) the win in this plebiscite with a low voter turnout so the US Congress has a good reason to decline our request for statehood and keep us where we are, which is good for them (the US) but not so much for us, however this gives the PIP another chance at winning the next plebiscite. But, why the boycott? Because of the debt and the committee dedicated to auditing said debt. Now, I could go on about these problems, but instead I'll link you to this reddit comment with much more in-depth answers: www.reddit.com/r/PuertoRico/comments/6gstke/can_someone_eli5_the_plebiscite_boycott/
To the first story, what is it about the trump-era political climate that has made art being offensive and provocative unacceptable? Whether it be this interpretation of a Shakespearean play, the girl standing down the Wall Street bull, or the Kathy Griffin thing (which for the record I thought was tacky and uninspired). The purpose of art is to upset/unsettle and reflect ourselves back at us, and if criticism through art has been deemed unacceptable, we might as well give up our right to independent thought.
T-MONZ The the No it's not, read the play. Julius Caesar (or in this case "Trump") being stabbed is not a good thing. Also, movies have portrayed presidents for decades, some with very serious likeness to actual presidents, being killed or assassinated (especially action movies). Should all those movies be banned too? Of course not, because there used to be an understanding that this stuff wasn't real.
I feel so bad for Puerto Rico. I myself am Puerto Rican (although I have only been once) and as much as I would love to have Puerto Rico independent and not a US territory, it needs to be a state badly. The people are suffering and considering the fact that it was Americans who screwed Puerto Rico over,it only seems fair that they help them out in this circumstance
Instead of counter-protests, can't people just show up to counter-argue the stance of the protest? If their stance is flawed or full of holes, only a civil discussion would bring those to light. Whoever yells loudest is how you try to win an argument in elementary school, it has no place in real world, adult discourse. Side note on the actual original protest: Why do people all of a sudden care so much about Sharia law? This isn't a new thing and I don't know who lied to these people, but the chance of those types of laws becoming implemented in America is virtually nonexistent. Muslims are a small minority in our country, at ~ 1%. If they're worried about our country becoming a theocracy, they should more be protesting the abundance of Christian laws we have now. Sharia is religious based law system and the Constitution states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." Allowing religion of any type to have say in the way we run our democracy lends us to switch our religious focus to another that you might not be found of. There's no picking and choosing.
Civil discussion is hard for a lot of people apparently.... What laws are Christian laws? I'm just asking out of curiosity I'm not Christian and disagree with a lot of laws. I believe most laws are money laws lol I'm also referring to federal not state laws for the Christian laws part. There are so many ridiculous county and state laws that don't even get enforced.
Treesuh Why do people care about sharia law? Because over 50% of Muslims in Europe believe that that is the way they should live. They are starting their own Islamic political party, and at the rate that Muslims are growing in Europe, someone from that party will be in control of Sweden, Britain, And germany in 10 years. Saying that it is not a threat is horribly wrong.
Treesuh Hmmmm.... so you say there are laws that go against the First Amendment of the Constitution, because there are "Christian-enforcing" laws that go against "establishment of a state (or federal) religion?" If there are such laws, it would be legally accurate to change or remove them in compliance of the Constitution. Now, the question is, do such laws exist and can you prove that they are establishing/have established a enforcement of Christian doctrine in part or in whole upon its constituents?
I was including states law in the laws that concern religious influence but in general, abortion rights, gay rights (more a states issue now but only as of recently), that God is written on our money and said in the pledge of allegiance… those are just off of the top of my head. Religious organizations allowed to donate to a candidate and allowing employers to deny coverage of contraception to it’s employees under their health insurance are also being spoken about being implemented. They are not explicit references to one religion, no, but they echo religious beliefs and traditions. Just because they do not cite a religion does not mean they are not born of religious ideals. As for the two comments citing the going-ons in Europe, I am not saying it can’t happen, I am saying that if they are truly worried about it for our future we should be fighting back against the influence of Christianity in our laws now and strengthening our separation of religion and government so it is harder for it to occur. Like I said, you can’t pick and choose. If you allow Christianity to influence our judicial system, so can any other religion.
As a Muslim I can fully state that Shari'ah law is scary, and incompatible with western society. Not all Muslims are for Shari'ah law. Most of my family, for example, isn't and finds KSA (Saudi Arabia) usage of Shari'ah scary. Just because it is a recommended law, doesn't mean all muslims follow, believe, of support it. As I said most of my friends (obviously muslims) are against it, and support Women rights.
I 100% agree. As a British woman, i do not want Sharia law at all implemented here. Also, living in a non-Muslin country we should completely follow that country's laws
It's nice to see the occasional comment here which goes directly against these crazy unverifiable statistics of "all/most muslims want sharia law". Thank you for speaking up.
Shazza Kip Actually shazza we do, the UK has over 100 sharia courts across the country, they are currently being investigated by both the government and the home affairs select committee, here is an interesting piece in The Guardian that discusses some of the issues involved, if you need more info just type sharia uk into google: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/dec/14/sharia-courts-family-law-women
ooz139mm yes but this is only effecting and being implemented by/on SOME Muslims. The vast majority of Muslims are completely against Sharia law and would not force it on others. There are still of course idiots in every religion who take it too far. But it's far from a law which is allowed here in the UK. Especially if it's under investigation.
+PandaMatrixComplex You say "The vast majority of Muslims are completely against Sharia", that's not what the polls show. The polls show 40 percent of UK Muslims want some form of sharia law, i.e for domestic disputes, etc and 23 percent want actual sharia law for all aspects of law. Of those 23 percent 7 % STRONGLY support it, whereas the other 17% just wanting it in preference to UK law. You also say "But it is far from a law which is allowed in the UK", in this you are wrong, It is allowed, it is in fact being used. In fact Theresa May our prime minister recently sparked controversy when she spoke out in support of the Islamic courts operating in the country, telling the nation they could "benefit a great deal" from Sharia teachings.
As an Asian Man coming from a different perspective, I see that play as an art with the following message: 1) The pararrels between the Roman Empire and the United States are so many - the strongest nation in the world with may ups and downs through centuries, leaders from differing levels of quality - and ultimately how they think the world can't exist without themselves - those who forget history is doomed to repeat it - that includes play that retells history - I see it as "learn from history so Americans don't end up like Romans" 2) As far as I know - unlike the beheaded Trump Photo - they never make any direct reference to Trump - aside from the fact that Caesar is now POTUS - its like an adaptation of Hamlet or Julius and Caesar in the Modern Era - retold in a different setting to improve accessibility - I don't see why you should be outraged by this - I'm happy that those who wouldn't care about a Shakespeare play because its ancient history will probably enjoy this more just because its easier to digest 3) Donald Trump should be proud and grateful that he's being compared to Julius Caesar (even tho it's by the press, not by the play managers) - the moral is It does not matter whether you're a cold blooded dictator or a kind man trying to build your nation - if you don't win the heart of your peers you're screwed
Whataver floats your boat, I was casually jackin it the other day and I just saw a randome gif of some lady shitting on her dinner, never visiting that site again 0/10. I guess there's a damand for scat though, everyone likes different shit.
Philly D is my only source of news. This isn't just because i love how you put the news in an interesting way, but also because you are non-biased, which a lot of national news sources are biased. You don't misconstrue the news, nor do you censor anything, which is why i love you as a person and a public figure. You are the most trustworthy news source that i know and i love watching this everyday, keep it up.
I agree that you can get a different message people are always going to have there own personal history that may change the message of what they read. But it doesn't change the fact that if you've read it you know what happens at the end. Thus the sponsors probably knew but like Phil points out didn't have issue with till it became a big thing. Thats more so what I was saying no matter what your perspective is the ending of the play is almost always the same no matter who is put in the role of Caesar. I was a part of a version for a stage combat show where Caesar was Lincoln, so I guess I wonder if that had more people watching it would it have been just as controversial? I think it's cause Trump is a current president, more so then just a president. Anyways I'm rambling but I mostly agree with your point ^_^
Shakespeare's plays were critiques of politics and important figureheads (Britain's kings and queens) to begin with. And he had his plays performed right in front of royalty and other political figures. This isn't in the same park as to what Kathy Griffin did.
Jentrix The Shakespeare play and what Kathy Griffin did both showed the president dead/dying. Is it different because the portrayal was different? Is it ok to "Kill" the president as long as you are critiquing the President? I do think that they have the right to do what they did under the idea of free speech and all that but what make it ok to criticize Kathy Griffin and not the Shakespeare play?
Agreed, but Kathy Griffin got everyone on the edge with that... let's call it "an act". So, by performing said... act... Kathy made the assassination of President into a really-really touchy topic. It wasn't just her, but she really was just the last straw. People don't feel comfortable watching President being killed, no matter how "artsy" it is. I'm willing to bet that if it wasn't for Kathy, nobody would really care about the play quite to this extent (Sponsors pulling out and such).
My uncle has been in jail for almost 4 years based on hearsay. There has been no physical proof. The woman who accused him refused to show up to court and now is nowhere to be found. Yet... he still sits in jail. He tried really hard to remain not guilty, but they continued to hound him till he took the plea. He has 3 children and he probably won't get out of jail for another 10 or so years. I've heard quiet a few stories where people get arrested based on hearsay and it scares me.
I believe they had all the right to preform the play the way it is. I understand that large sponsors can react in the best way for their brand. Freedom of speech doesn't mean there isn't and shouldn't consequences for things like this meant to spark conflict.
Basically a load of kids ACTUALLY voted for labour to get free university and completely messed up predictions. Now causing a load of hassle for brexit negotiations and are still happy although labour lost
As a Puerto Rican who did vote in Sunday's referendum, I have to say the boycott was just ridiculous. The only opinions that count are those expressed in the ballot. We had a similar referendum in 2012 where there was greater participation and statehood won then, too. Most of the people I've spoken to who decided not to vote, just don't think statehood could ever be a reality. Our political status has been an issue for too many years; many people are just tired of the same discourse.
I'm not advocating for Puerto Rico to become a state, but that argument about confusion of whats valid... the vote or the number that did not vote is fucking ridiculous. What do we count when we vote to determine the winner of a vote? VOTES! Have we ever in history of anything significant counted non votes as a vote? NO!!!!
Considering how many wars we have fought for the united states, and how much bullshit we have taken from it in horrible ways such as dictatorships and forced scientific experimentations, puerto rico should be a state. The debt is partially the US' fault anyway.
A none vote is not a vote for something else. The united States has said that many times when a group of people don't vote. it would be very hypocritical if they count that.
Personally the trump Caesar thing doesn't bother me because that is ACTUALLY art. They modernized and parodied a Shakespeare tragedy while also showing why it is NOT RIGHT to kill our leaders. Now Caesar and Trump are very different people, but I feel this was tasteful and has no comparison to Kathy Griffins idiotic photo shoot.
Anybody outraged by this is essentially an uncultured fuck who doesn't even know the basic plot points of a play that is required reading in most reputable school districts. Cause it teaches really good values and also democracy.
Atrinoch while I agree with you that it is a modernization of a classic play, I think it is at least borderline irresponsible to make Caesar into Trump. I would have been all for it if they had chosen an actor that didn't resemble the current president and instead choose to make it a generic president like some movies do
Anybody who doesn't see how this is nothing more than Another disrespectful swipe at the President is Specifically, Abundantly and Thoroughly a Fucking Dick Head. But I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Azim H - we all wanted Jezza to win because he's not going to privatise everything and suck the economy of its money. Also he's a sound lad and actually made an effort to stick by what he could to benefit the people, not himself and his homies (Theresa). Even though he lost, he still won because he shat all over the tories and the lost seats from Theresa's greed. Imo
RousedPotato Yeah completely agree with you. If he done this well with 80% of his own constituency against him imagine how well he would have done with all his party members backing him
+RousedPotato "We all want Jezza." Lmao if we all wanted him he would be the PM right now. Where would the money come from for all the promises he's made.
I'm Rican. My island needs to get their shit together and become a state and I'm glad this is happening. They've been a giant welfare system for far too long without any notable commitments to the country itself. This is a huge step towards fixing the beautiful craziness of the island. I'm happy.
Carlos Rodriguez I'm half rican with family still there and I agree. They should've done this long ago before they declared bankruptcy. Smh, c'mon guys...now they face the chance it won't work.
It's argued mid way before he's killed if he's a despot. After his death In his will it's revealed his promises to give all Romans land and fortune was genuine
I haven't yet been able to figure out why this is, but my reaction to the play is different than my reaction to the Kathy Griffin picture. I thought the picture was distasteful and stupid, but I can't really find a reason to be upset by the play. Something to mull over I suppose.
Yea same here......but both are freedom of speech and people are free to react how they want to it. Not a good move for either if you are trying to appeal to the most people.....you probably understand this but I feel like a lot of people dont.
Yeah I absolutely believe that both parties should be able to express their selves however they choose. I just find it interesting that two instances of self expression saying similar things elicit such a drastically different response from me.
If you know the true history of Rome you can see the play in many different angles. One such angle is after the killing of Caesar, his adopted son Augustus takes over and has the same beliefs but doesn't make the same mistake and rules over the Senate instead of giving it ground to play on. I see Donald Trump being targeted by psycho Liberals with him eventually dying and his successor becoming bigger and better than him. I don't know if it is just me with my imagination but it probably is.
Well for starters the play provides context. And in the context of the play, the assassination was not a good thing. Also, we already know to expect the person playing Caesar to be killed, so it's less shocking and startling.
question is if the play was portraying a black Person lets say black President of some country would the reaction be the same??? I say its art myself and i'm a Trump voter. I blame the both sides on this because both sides are going after sponsors. Clearly the left started it and now the right has retaliated.
Thank you so much for talking about Puerto Rico. No one in the media is covering it very much and there's so much stuff going on in that beautiful island.
I don't usually comment on videos, but I have to with the first story. I'm a 9th grader (going on 10th grader) in California and I read Shakespeare's King Lear in the last semester of school. Our assignment was to create a parody of our chosen Shakespeare novel and a group of classmates and I chose to make all the King Lear characters people from Donald Trump's cabinet. HOWEVER to avoid too much political controversy and keep it in /good taste/, we did it all via twitter. No one "died", they just had their twitter accounts deleted. It was a huge production that involved me making giant cardboard cutouts of twitter so we could walk around and pretend everything we said was a tweet etc. etc. but basically it's just an interesting concept (to me) that you can totally draw these connections and make political statements but you have to be /tasteful/ if you want to pass your class.
Philip as an observant muslim studying an Islamic Studies degree, I absolutely respect your point of view, yet I'd wish you delved a little deeper in understanding Sharia Law. A country like Saudi Arabia has been condemned by several Muslim Sharia scholars for not actually practicing it correctly. aAlso what I find to be quite ironic is that one of the rules of Sharia law in fact states that it [Sharia Law] cannot and should not be practiced in a non-Muslim country (e.g US). It states that all Muslims are obliged to repect the country's rules and laws that they live in and abide by them. This rule has been long stated in Islam since some of the Prophet Muhammad's companions immigrated to [Christian] Ethiopia: they were ordered to respect the country's laws and people. BTW love your show. The only source I trust for US news.
Because younger generations have been indoctrinated with so much political correctness, they would rather bend over backwards and take it right up the ass. These people once they actually grow up and realise the world isn't rainbows and protests will find themselves ACTUALLY oppressed. When the clock hits midnight and they suddenly realise they just handed over the keys to a religion which would see them dead, I will be sitting with a big fat cigar laughing at them running for the hills. You can't educate an idiot, especially one which is so beta they cum at the smell of a girl farting. The western world is at a tipping point, and in the next decade, it will determine if we fight off Islam, or accept it as a way of life. One of the big problems I have seen is younger Muslims trying to make Islam look cool and fashionable, with their stupid head scarfs and "pretend" freedoms. When push comes to shove, if you see one, just turn the cheek and walk on by without even a smile or a hello, because that's what they do to us.
Phil there's something that you, and most of the people commenting on the Puerto Rico referendum aren't considering(which I think is just because of lack of knowledge). The referendum wasn't "do you want to become a state or not" the referendum was "Do you want to be a state, independent, or something similar to what we have now" re-read it, there wasn't an option of "stay the same" and on top of that the referendum stated on the statehood line "this is the only option that will allow people born in Puerto Rico to be citizens" On top of that, congress DENIED funding the referendum in the first place and sent a bunch of reasons why, if congress was AGAINST the referendum in the first place why on earth would they even consider it after? It was a ridiculous waste of money when you consider schools getting closed down and everything else that is happening on the island. The boycott was the only logical way to fight the referendum, because it was the only way to actually vote no to statehood.
Can we all agree that this referendum was the governors way of dumbing down everyone to fight over the issue of lesser importance to our country right now? That it was just a distraction to take our eyes off of his plan and budget so he could get on with his inept corrupt politician ways?
There was a 'stay the same' option. The referendum lacked the second most popular "enhanced commonwealth" option and that's why the opposition boycotted it (aside from the waste of money).
No matter your view on Islam, everyone's view on Sharia Law should be the same. It is a awful form of ideology that shouldn't be supported by anyone. Sadly it is held in high esteem by decently large groups of people in Muslim majority countries. The marches against it held in the USA, one of the best places for women in the world should garner just as much support as the Women's March or BLM. Whatever their reasoning is, no one should be marching against anti-sharia law. Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere - MLK Jr.
Rafael Cabrera Hey man the main philosophies of modern NA islam is pretty much the same as christianity. We believe in the christian and judais god with only minor differences. As for the history of prophets, can we really know for sure?
Seems like we are responsible for Puerto Rico, and a vote is a vote. People like to argue that only 24 some odd percent of eligible US voters voted for Trump, and he's currently the President. It would be pretty hypocritical for all the people saying "gotta take care of our own" and then ignoring Puerto Rican US citizens just because they aren't a state.
TheGreatRakatan i agree. It'd be insanely hypocritical to preach being the head example of democracy in the world and then ignore a fair and square democratic voting process over the low percentage of votes. A vote is a vote. If you didn't want to be a part of the status change of your own country then don't expect to be counted in the process.
TheGreatRakatan it kinda felt like cowardice to tell their party not to vote. if a majority really supported not becoming a state, then they could have won fair and square
TheGreatRakatan no. No it's not at all. That country is a corrupt shithole that can't wipe its own ass. Fuck em. Seriously, every Puerto Rican I know says they will never return. The place is a piece of shit.
Can we ignore them because they put a terrorist at the head of their parade in NYC less than a month ago? Oscar Lopez Rivera was the head of the FALN, a group that did over 100 bombings on US soil and targeted civilian areas like bars and parks. And he rode at the head of the parade, as a representation of their people. The sheer fact that there weren't enough Puerto Ricans pissed off about that to stop them from doing it, by force if necessary, is damning. They chose him to be their face, he IS Puerto Rico, so no, they don't need to be a state.
About sharia, we have a LOT of moderate Muslims in the US. Way more than european countries. Many of our Muslim citizens choose to come to live in a secular liberal society when the middle east started to become theocracies. However, the more refugees we take in now, the more likely we'll be to start having Muslims who want to practice a literal interpretation of the Quran like they used to. This is a big reason why I think it's better for everyone if refugees can choose to resettle in neighboring Muslim majority theocracies if they wish. Otherwise we'll start seeing things similar to England where the refugees aren't even happy because they can't practice their religion how they wish.
I'm torn on the Trump scandal in the park. One side of me wants to say we shouldn't dictate art and free speech should always be free to be expressed. But like Phil says people are allowed to be angry and disgusted by what you express. But I think this was disgusting and distasteful so should they be allowed to express it, yes. But don't be mad when people are outraged
I think the play is more of a comparison of the state of America and the fall of Rome. I feel like it's less about Trump and more about the current state of America society.
honestly if they said this was Trump I would have objections, but the fact that it's allegory keeps me from honestly hating on them. Allegory has a long and storied history in both theatre and storytelling as a whole, particularly when using it to make a statement about higher powers at be. Was it offensive that Animal Farm depicts a Stalin allegory as tyrannical and no better than the humans they cast out? Granted this isn't a perfect comparison given Napoleon wasn't killed at the end of the book and Trump didn't do many of the things Ceasar did in the play. At least to my knowledge, he has yet to kill Clinton on the field of war, parading her corpse through the streets in a Triumph, and absorbing her governmental power into his own. the allegory they seem to be getting at here is less accusatory and more comparative I think. They mean to take Julius Caesar, a directorial leader who came to absolute power through means of questionable legality, and compare him against our president. Does that justify them killing him as per what happens in the play? Should they have altered the ending? Perhaps, but in my mind this was a little tone-deaf, but thought-provoking nevertheless, and I think that's honestly all they wanted us to do in the end. Think, discuss, compare and contrast.
can you please cover the weis supermarket murder-suicide? With so many different coverages it's hard to determine a truly accurate source. Really appreciate what you do and what you put into your show. Thanks for everything
I think this brings up a thought I've had a lot lately; I think we need to have a conversation about when art is art or just exploitation. People like to say anything's art, and maybe it is, but where do we draw the line? Is it if it's illegal? is there some cultural lines we don't cross to make it "appropriate" art? I noticed in one of the statements about it they mentioned the intent being to "provoke or offend," which brings us to the main point: Where does intent matter in topical, current art? Many subscribe to the school of thought that artist's intent doesn't matter, but between this, Kathy Griffin, and many pieces that DON'T involve Trump lately have had these sorts of controversies, and that's a good question to ask. Do they have a right to produce this and not be question by sponsors, that it's free speech and artistic, that it's making a point about drawing parallels between Caesar and Trump? Or did they design this to get outrage, press, attention to draw people and market, or did the director just really want to personally orchestrate and watch Trump getting murdered onstage because of their own views? And no matter the answer, does that matter? It's something to ask.
The Kathy Griffin thing is way different to me. As you pointed out, the play (I haven't seen this specific rendition, but every version I've seen) specifically portrays the assassination as a bad thing. While I'm no Trump supporter, the parallel drawn here is extremely interesting to me, thus fulfilling the purpose of art (imo), to spark thought. The Kathy Griffin thing was just to spark outrage, and just came off as a cry for attention to me.
Jason Anderson This is exactly what I thought. The play is meant to parallel today by updating the setting. They could have picked a different play, one where they could have casted Trump as a villain, if they wanted to just kill him.
I'm personally OK with the play; unlike with the Cathy Griffin fiasco. I'm a big believer in not censoring art; I can see how people could see it as going too far; but for the play I view it more as simply adapting an old story for more modern times so as to reach a newer audience. The Lion King was based off Hamlet; and there are plenty of more modernized versions of Romeo and Juliet.
dip.C Because it's like history you don't dump history and it still teaches good lessons, it's just old so it need a reform cuz things have changed. The Muslim faith hasn't reformed so that's why there is a lot of people still killing gays and oppressing women because it says they can and I know a lot of people from that faith don't agree with that but it says they can and that's not right so it needs to be reformed.
Sharia law has been enforced in parts of Britain within some areas although it is not government sanctioned it is occurring in the western world. Being vigilant to prevent it's encroachment is important. Sticking your head in the sand and claiming America is not subject to the same gradual shift is just being wilfully ignorant. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sharia-in-the-uk-the-courts-in-the-shadow-of-british-law-offering-rough-justice-for-muslim-women-a6761221.html
IDK. Are there people suggesting we should implement sharia law here in America? In which case, we should just take our bibles, bacon, guns, porn, music, and art over there. And if they don't like it, perhaps we'll just blow up a building? Yeah? Just a couple thousand death count? I just i feel like God is speaking to me and telling me to fucking kill thousands of people with one action. Psyche fuck that fuck Allah. We'll just throw bacon in their faces, and put bacon in their food so they get exposed to its beauty. Then they'll be hooked.
I love asking you guys question when it has to do with free speech. The answers are usually so interesting. Hope yall have a great day/night! I'm going to go under the covers. I was really excited for this week, so of course I got sick... :)
I love free speech because it brought us Phil.
Phil, did you get a haircut? Your hair is on point today!
Philip DeFranco I was the second like
ummmmmmmm... please respond
Philip DeFranco if you can't fake kill one person, what give you the right to kill anyone else?
Hello from Puerto Rico so glad you talked about our issues , over here people don't know what there going to do and we are worried of the future of our island. Makes me feel better to hear people outside of Puerto Rico talk about it
As a fellow American following it I'm quite concerned I hear that only 23% of Puerto Rico voted :( ... I'm not sure what Washington will do with that
also you guys should boycott all Heroin and Cocaine its causing a huge trade deceit and bleeding ur economy dry
Sorry : /
But then again it's not up to you or a majority vote.
P.S. I think "SJW logic" is an oxymoron
the difference is that people want to kill trump if the play had Obama it would have been prisión you liberals are hypersensitive
Well there pulling out cuse the right is now speaking out hardcore you may thank SJW'S 4 this 4 pushing the right to this
@robert23456789 You mean Trump supporters, because not even SJW douche bags would hop on that train. Nothing to gain from it unless you backed that pile of ignorance.
I've just been Phil'd in but somehow feel exhausted by these issues of hate from start to finish. Whew...
Creative North I can feel ya... :)
hahaha same here
really exhausting for the mind
Lol it's just phil who's saying that we've been filled in, but actually he's choosing topics that are really exhausting hahaha
Creative North exactly what I was saying in my head lol
I really hope that man got compensation for being unrightly locked up for so long, thats just so ridiculously unfair :/
probably a pittance if he got any
Wow racist, he was proven not guilty
Alex B He did not get compensated by the state, from what I read. There is a GoFundme for him. Sucks that he has to rely on private donation though. The state really fucked up and they should at least try to help the poor man.
Ya thats complete bullshit, they basically stole 17 years of his life
As of 2012 24 states didn't offer any compensation for wrongful convictions.
The American justice system is a fucking joke.
American "justice" system. The motto should be "You get the justice you pay for."
Not all jokes are funny.
...
Heh. That sounds like it should be a tagline for a really bad comedian's stand-up gig.
In 2012 the Guthrie did a production of Julius Caesar with Obama portrayed the way Trump is being portrayed now. Also sponsored by Delta. No mention of that? Really?
the recurring theme of this presidency is hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance on both sides.
The audience was significantly smaller. You can google it.
Really??? Great to know. If true, Surprising this was not met with the same kind of public outrage and not at all surprising it is not being mentioned in the news
+Parker Gerheiser
2012 was a black guy, not an Obama look-a-like you racist piece of shit
liiiliiiliiiliiil and this is just a white guy with blonde hair you racist sjw
The "Mean Girls" clip 😂😂
Please can you talk about what's happening over here in the UK with our politics? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it Phil
People will get mad that he's not from the U.K. most likely and crucify him for it I've seen it happen before.
I don't know coalition with the DUP is a pretty big deal
(other side of the swimming pool of course)
I also understand that the American government has tried to help Puerto Rico's debt issue, but even the Senate basically said it was like slapping a bandaid on. It would not fix their actual issues. Only becoming an actually state and getting the full federal support it comes with can actually help.
Any chance of covering the UK election results? Unexpected result and a DUP-Conservative alliance is very risky if Northern Ireland reverts to direct rule.
Dima Vasilev He may be waiting until the dust settles. Things are still up in the air with U.K. and the next steps that are going to be taken.
Sounds about right I guess. Negotiations haven't even happened yet, no matter how much May wants to pretend they have.
Nahuel Diaz yeah it should either be fully independent or the 51st state
I'm also Puerto Rican, and I'm not sure if PR would be able to become a fully independent country because of the debt crisis that's going on.
+David Bayliss
Actually depending on the decibel level it can be.
Sanzofunke you can deafen someone with an air horn! That's a permanent thing, hearing loss isn't a joke. so yeah I'd agree and say that's assault.
David Bayliss
it is tho, sound is just the pulse that vibrates all the molecules between you and said air horn
thus literally creating a violent physical reaction, rattling your ears drums to shit
tis assault
Whether you like our president or not. You should still show respect to the President of the United States.
Past presidents would be rolling in their graves to see what this nation has become.

having actually read Julius Caesar and knowing it's plot, I feel this is an inspired and thought worthy modern representation of current issues through the timeless writings of Shakespeare. Essentially it is theater done right in my opinion. The parallels between Caesar and POTUS, US and Roman Empire are significant. It's not an attack on Trump, it is a retelling of a relevant issue using current representations of the original preface.
agreed 100%
I need to like this more than just once
!00% agreed. This controversy shows how sensitive we've become to just 1 moment and only react to it. A moment doesn't paint a complete picture as to what's happening. Sure, you get the action, but you don't get all the information that brought people to that moment, or the repercussions thereafter. How many times has something happened that has gone viral and people are in outrage over it only for the rest of the story to come to light that paints a completely different picture?
Why no coverage on the results of the UK general election, results and controversial coalition?
Do Americans even go to work anymore? Lol I wish I could afford to protest everyday for nonsense
Gary Lynch Show it's a constitutional right to be a part of organized protest. they normally can't be punished for protesting by their work
most protests are paid and are not real
The people that protest are usually troubled teens
Yeah I get that it's a right but everyday it seems a new protest breaks out lol
the protesters are usually teens, or people in their 20's who don't work full time or at all haha
Trump will never be a quarter of the man Caesar was.
Sharia law, or any religious laws for that matter, shouldn't be law of any land. Simple as that.
Unless they're voted in. Cause that's how democracy works.
"70+dB" ??? so many things wrong here i don't even know where to start ...
Did anyone else see Jimmy Fallon floating at 4:44 or was that glitch just for me?
This is pure, I was looking for this comment...
another reason why almost nobody voted yesterday here in PR is because we know that the congress won't take PR issues seriously so why bother voting
El Boricua Otaku KRX Exactly.
i ddnt voted either ,bunch of clowns we have for leaders ,its the same like when ppl voted for one senate, they only take it serious when its for their advantage
honestly im surprised that he mentioned something about PR
I would love to see the Puerto Rican people take back your country. America has been stealing from you forever.
El Boricua Otaku KRX I'm just as surprised as you are
Whether you agree with Lauren Southern's political opinions or not, you gotta respect her. She goes into the middle of violent protests even though she has been repeatedly attacked both verbally and physically. She doesn't back down from people challenging her viewpoints, and she continually tries to show what is happening in the face of danger.

Thank you for summing up the situation perfectly.
they have the right to portray trump in theater but they also have to deal with the consequences which isn't any law but how people react to it. then again I severely disagree with burning the American flag but feelings have no place in law
Real shit
Damion Johannsen People often forget the important part that other people are just as free to critisize free speech
Amy Jenkinson Caesar was also the victim of his own actions and ambitions, which arguably makes Trump an even more perfect analog.
Zack Reynolds what if they are artists they clearly understand the mssg
If ACT for America is truly against Sharia law for the reasons they say they are, then I fully support them.
No one, God or Mankind, has the right to govern the individual in how they live their life so long as they aren't hurting anyone.
Actually, God has every right to govern mankind... He created humanity, so He gets to make the rules. If Allah is real, and Muhammad is His true Prophet, then tough luck, them's da rulez. Personally, I do not believe either... I know this wasn't exactly your point, just saying.
I am against sharia law for the obvious reasons but as a right winger and a christian no religion should rule with government power ever.
That's like saying your parents can govern you until they die.
Julius Red I think you guys should do a lot more reseach eg. London shari courts and what's happening in Australia
+Brian Herren stoning is only for an individual having sex with someone else while still married, It's also for men
Thank you for being someone I can use to back up my argument in class assignments. It makes it easier to quote someone that says things better than I can, but shows what I feel and think.
11:38 I'm not the only one that sees Captain America right?
Punchin Nazis like a boss
JanderVK can't stop won't stop
I am so glad that someone else seen it too lol
I believe that's the Based Stickman.
That's why he is not going to be in Spider-Man Homecoming.
There have been a number of productions of Caesar over the years depicting the sitting president as Caesar. There was even one of Obama.
Justin Savioli
Do you know which production companies did those interpretations?
I think this just emphasizes the hyper-sensitization our society has become accustomed to in recent years. Literally anything someone says can trigger anyone nowadays and they have to apologize for hurt feelings. On the other hand, I don't believe many people were talking about assassinating Obama, whereas CNN had a whole segment about what would happen if Trump was assassinated on Inauguration Day of all days.
Justin Savioli thank you. Very interesting. Can you drop a link of the one of Obama?
It was a production put on by the Guthrie theater in 2012. Oddly enough Delta airlines also sponsored it... but never pulled out their funding.
www.startribune.com/trump-themed-julius-caesar-is-talk-of-theater-world-unlike-2012-obama-version-in-twin-cities/427990033/
THEY'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING
J Tevo no one gives a shit about U.K.
For Hinguerez
Ah yes, because you drown out everything over there because you think you're the best at everything. MURICA!!! I'm amrite BRO!!!!
This is like reading ignorance off a page.
J Tevo damn bro chill all we did was dump some tea
GUYS STOP IT. If you troll J Tevo any more his head might explode.
J Tevo The reason Philip Defranco covers so much news about America because he's American. Unless it has international importance, there isn't much point in reporting on it
11:39 noticed that one rioter or riot policeman (unsure) had a Captain America shield. I don't know what that person stands for, but what a boss.
That "Mean Girls" clip was everything 😂😂😂😂😂
Phillip De Franco should do more bee content. Where are the bees? We need bees.
Considering all but the most right wing of our political parties would be considered dangerously liberal and socialist by US standards :)
look up the Thinkery, he does all world issues and is like phil
Just commenting because as a Kiwi, its law to point out NZ whenever we are mentioned in someway.
11:39 why is Captain America there?
Clay HAHAHAHAHAAH someone else noticed Cap I knew I wasn't insane
Clay u mean Captain Antifa?
Clay hi. that guy is me.
Clay, did you listen to all the tapes yet?
Hey Phil I just wanted to say thank you for all the entertainment you've given me. These last couple of days in my life have been nothing less then horrible. Me and my mother was kicked out of my house by my stepdad then after a couple of hours things just went back to "normal" while I've been staying you of the house. Anyways I just wanted to say thanks and keep up the amazing work.
Here's an common sense thought on sharia law:
How many other races, or religions come to America, trying to advocate the law of their government, on foreign soil? Why is separation of church and state ok for "christianity", but not for Islam?
it is "ok" because nowhere in the bible does the bible become more than a spiritual/religious guide. the quran on the other hand tries to regulate every aspect of life - it's not only a spiritual scripture but also a political one, a financial one and it aims at controlling everything. so any laws that don't go with islam/quran/sharia law are automatically void and nonexistant. there can be no true separation of church and state in islam, because church IS state for islam.
I'm guessing you've never heard of the Beth Din of America... which is the governing body in the US for Halakha Courts.
And yet, no one cares about the Beth Din..Jew zealots have not smacked planes into our buildings (real, or not). (I'm Jewish btw)
Remember:
Taqiyya
Tawriya
Maruna
Kitman
It is for both, no one was ever advocating for sharia law other than crazy Muslims and maybe radical leftists that actually make up less than a percentage of the party as a whole.
well the country was built by Christians wasn't it? also this struggle will happen in every country tbh, some even react violently to minorities
Reality Forge Shut up islamophobe racist
Sami Sugiarta um sorry all religion should be marched against, that kind of thinking is why ppl are being arrested in the U.K. For burning the Koran
Reality Forge Ooohhh I smell a rascist fuckface!
I am joining in
A lot of people probably going to prefer the Sharia Law debate here, that's a headache I don't need.
John Leathley because it's happening so much more now. And it's happening to the same person.
Hypocrisy, if you did anything they did to Trump to Obama you'd get called a racist, that's why.
It's because it is inciting violence against our current president.
***** I'm talking about Kathy Griffin
Yes, because protesters are interested in calm rational discussion. Are you high?
And while that is very good, you also have a lot that do support it in the west.
It's nice to see the occasional comment here which goes directly against these crazy unverifiable statistics of "all/most muslims want sharia law".
Thank you for speaking up.
AAQsR no one fucking claimed that all muslims support it. That doesnt change the fact that a lot of them are and thats a big problem.
i go to a school in a mostly muslim area and i dont think anyone thinks sharia law is a good idea here.
Why are americans talking about sharia law in the US? We don't even have sharia law in Lebanon and we're in the Middle East so wtf
It's all fear mongering to trick the Concervative Christians into voting to give up religious rights.
buchner funnel No we don't
Shazza Kip
Actually shazza we do, the UK has over 100 sharia courts across the country, they are currently being investigated by both the government and the home affairs select committee, here is an interesting piece in The Guardian that discusses some of the issues involved, if you need more info just type sharia uk into google:
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/dec/14/sharia-courts-family-law-women
ooz139mm yes but this is only effecting and being implemented by/on SOME Muslims. The vast majority of Muslims are completely against Sharia law and would not force it on others. There are still of course idiots in every religion who take it too far. But it's far from a law which is allowed here in the UK. Especially if it's under investigation.
+PandaMatrixComplex
You say "The vast majority of Muslims are completely against Sharia", that's not what the polls show.
As an Asian Man coming from a different perspective, I see that play as an art with the following message:
1) The pararrels between the Roman Empire and the United States are so many - the strongest nation in the world with may ups and downs through centuries, leaders from differing levels of quality - and ultimately how they think the world can't exist without themselves - those who forget history is doomed to repeat it - that includes play that retells history - I see it as "learn from history so Americans don't end up like Romans"
2) As far as I know - unlike the beheaded Trump Photo - they never make any direct reference to Trump - aside from the fact that Caesar is now POTUS - its like an adaptation of Hamlet or Julius and Caesar in the Modern Era - retold in a different setting to improve accessibility - I don't see why you should be outraged by this - I'm happy that those who wouldn't care about a Shakespeare play because its ancient history will probably enjoy this more just because its easier to digest
3) Donald Trump should be proud and grateful that he's being compared to Julius Caesar (even tho it's by the press, not by the play managers) - the moral is It does not matter whether you're a cold blooded dictator or a kind man trying to build your nation - if you don't win the heart of your peers you're screwed
hey guys - don't throw pee on people. not cool, ever
"V K Your not a bright one
Why are you discriminating against R Kelly and Trump? Why you gotta be a hater that way? ;)
What if it's a consensual Golden Shower?
Whataver floats your boat, I was casually jackin it the other day and I just saw a randome gif of some lady shitting on her dinner, never visiting that site again 0/10. I guess there's a damand for scat though, everyone likes different shit.
How about cold pee, still not cool? lol just joking!
I cannot tell you how glad I was to see Gretchen Wieners in this video.
*"WE SHOULD TOTALLY JUST STAB CAESAR!!!"*
Julius Caesar it seems is something not many people have read, but probably should.
The Nerdy Nymph. I thought its was required reading in a lot of high schools or colleges
XD Not at my high school or my college, I just read it cause I was a theater person, so I guess it depends on what classes you choose to take.
Ren it is, But nobody actually reads in schools or colleges. People use online sources like SparkNotes
On the bright side he missed the Matrix sequels, so thats good!
*I freaked out over breath of the wild gear appearing in skyrim for the Nintendo Switch 😄*

Can we all take a moment to laugh at Theresa May for completely fucking up the UK election
Stuart Guy I think we can take more than a few moments for that :P
Stuart Guy 🎶🎶Oh, Jeremyy Corrrbyn 🎶🎶
Yes! I'm so sad he didn't cover this.
Denenterprises she tried to hold an election early to give her party more say in the brexit negotiations, and failed.
Basically a load of kids ACTUALLY voted for labour to get free university and completely messed up predictions. Now causing a load of hassle for brexit negotiations and are still happy although labour lost
"et tu pence"
I was looking for this comment.
lol, the betrayal.
To take an action as significant as this you need an actual mandate from the people, and sorry, but 26% of people is clearly not it.
A none vote is not a vote for something else. The united States has said that many times when a group of people don't vote. it would be very hypocritical if they count that.
Last part is yes there have been.
zodiacking5 oh... And?
Personally the trump Caesar thing doesn't bother me because that is ACTUALLY art. They modernized and parodied a Shakespeare tragedy while also showing why it is NOT RIGHT to kill our leaders. Now Caesar and Trump are very different people, but I feel this was tasteful and has no comparison to Kathy Griffins idiotic photo shoot.
I agree
I agree with your point
Yo Phil, us Brits had a general election. Don't forget us! :(
RousedPotato I really wanted Jeremy to win ;(
Azim H - we all wanted Jezza to win because he's not going to privatise everything and suck the economy of its money.
Azim H we all know that lord buckethead was the best choice.
2:29 WOW! You have no idea how much that changed my opinion! Thank you Phil!
Caesar was the good guy( objectively speaking posdibly)...
*possibly
He was a good guy.
he was a good guy
It's argued mid way before he's killed if he's a despot. After his death In his will it's revealed his promises to give all Romans land and fortune was genuine
thomas mahoney et tu, brute?
I apologize for run on sentences :)
C'mon Phil, fix that crooked Star Wars picture already...
Nolls Nook Haha, it's driving me crazy!
Eric Nolletti YES
Bob bobboob thought I was the only one that noticed...
its not crooked, its set at an angle that makes it appear like its crooked.
I didn't notice until you pointed that out.. :(
I feel very Philled In today. Thank you.
Imagine fighting for women and gay rights but then defending the same religious law that oppressed and kills them.
Wzardsarecool smh research plz
Thats what im saying...
That's liberalism for you.
GamingTutor wow..
Phil there's something that you, and most of the people commenting on the Puerto Rico referendum aren't considering(which I think is just because of lack of knowledge). The referendum wasn't "do you want to become a state or not" the referendum was "Do you want to be a state, independent, or something similar to what we have now" re-read it, there wasn't an option of "stay the same" and on top of that the referendum stated on the statehood line "this is the only option that will allow people born in Puerto Rico to be citizens"
On top of that, congress DENIED funding the referendum in the first place and sent a bunch of reasons why, if congress was AGAINST the referendum in the first place why on earth would they even consider it after? It was a ridiculous waste of money when you consider schools getting closed down and everything else that is happening on the island. The boycott was the only logical way to fight the referendum, because it was the only way to actually vote no to statehood.
William Torres exactly thank you!
Nick Markiewicz As a muslim, i agree and i dont get why some dont : /
@karios your prophet muhammad was a PEDOPHILE mass MURDERER dude....
Rafael Cabrera Hey man the main philosophies of modern NA islam is pretty much the same as christianity. We believe in the christian and judais god with only minor differences. As for the history of prophets, can we really know for sure?
eh? that gives your country away lol but cheers jk
kairos atheist here...
And muhammad indeed was a pedophile mass murderer prophet Who supported slavery and beating of women. Thats a fact
I'm reading this like "I wonder who my Doppelgänger is… Agh I’m getting sick nooooooo SPORTS!" XD
I left E3 for this, but it is worth it
The reproduction of Julius Caesar is totally different than the Kathy Griffin Photo.
this is a good news channel!! awesome!!
Thank you Delta, finally a corporate entity with some brains and morals.
DID YOU JUST ASSUME MY POSITION IN THE COMMENT SECTION

honestly if they said this was Trump I would have objections, but the fact that it's allegory keeps me from honestly hating on them.
I think it's pretty obvious that they aren't advocating people go stab Trump, though it seems like a lot of people are taking it that way.
can you please cover the weis supermarket murder-suicide? With so many different coverages it's hard to determine a truly accurate source. Really appreciate what you do and what you put into your show. Thanks for everything
... So, a fuckface gone nuts and shot some people.
What else is there to know?
That's why it's the Old Testament they reformed it, they haven't reformed the Muslim faith
Why didn't they dump the old testament if it was so toxic? Are alcoholics reformed if they still have alcohol on their shelves?
dip.C Because it's like history you don't dump history and it still teaches good lessons, it's just old so it need a reform cuz things have changed. The Muslim faith hasn't reformed so that's why there is a lot of people still killing gays and oppressing women because it says they can and I know a lot of people from that faith don't agree with that but it says they can and that's not right so it needs to be reformed.
I wish you posted at a more consistent time. I like watching you on my 1pm lunch break
How is giving real-life examples of the implementation of sharia law fear-mongering?
Tardis945 there is NO sharia law in the USA and their protest is stupid. Sharia law will never be implemented here, stop being obtuse
