    Try throwing them into a pot of rolling boiling water and let them boil for a good ten minutes. That not only kills them instantly but also eliminates any risk of ingesting parasites. But it also cooks them through so that you can drain them season them as you like and then throw them into a saute pan or wok with hot oil and give them a good stir fry. But since they go in already cooked you don't have to burn them to avoid any parasites because they were already killed in the initial boiling process.

      The science behind it suggest it's 100% safe and healthy provided you cook them. They have many health benefits and full of nutrients. They contain as much protein as red meat pound for pound. They can be consumed raw but not recommended for safety reasons such as parasites (as stated in the video). Regardless of what it is, Always cook your food! On the side note, if you're into ancient text, The Holy Bible suggest they're good to eat too.

    Catch grasshoppers at night, using a flashlight to blind them, then drop them into a coffee can with a 'V' notch cut in the lid. Grasshoppers climb up tall plants, fence posts, and trees at night, so they are very easy to catch. Right now, we are suffering a grasshopper invasion, so it's easy to catch a few thousand of them each night. Four of us have caught 3 pounds of grasshoppers in one night, then the next day they are still so thick that a person cannot even tell the population was diminished.

    Excellent video! We should all probably be eating more insects due to how productive they are to raise in terms of water/resource usage compared to livestock. I see this a sure thing in the future, but in the meantime my attitude is "you first". Way to step up to the bar Carly.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад

      Agreed. I wonder when we developed the idea that eating bugs is yucky? I mean, people love their ocean invertebrates, but the land ones are gross. I am guilty of it myself, of course, and I don't think grasshoppers are going to make it into my diet on a regular basis. Insect products such as cricket flour are making a bit of a splash though.

    Pull off the legs first because those get stuck between your teeth. If you pull at the head straight out the head will come off and so will all the guts and internal nastiness. Easier than gutting a fish. Take the wings off and put them in a thin metal wire to roast them.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Do you think the nasty flavour on the bigger one came from the guts? I figured picking the legs off after would be easier because it would be all crispy. Good to know about the wings. I just threw them on the ground.

    They looked good! Probably could have killed them and marinated them all with an alcohol marinade. I mean we used Alcohol to euthanize bugs back in the day (though I'll have to check the proof, it basically makes them drunk and then... not). But that's another way. But yeah, cold works too. They looked good enough to consider trying!

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад

      They really weren't too bad. The bigger ones had a bit of a chemical flavour. I think I remember you saying something about alcohol when I did the ants. I think making an ant liqueur would be great. It would add a little lemon flavour.

    • @TheOtterOutdoorsman
      @TheOtterOutdoorsman 6 лет назад

      you would want it to be a just high enough proof that it euthanizes them relatively quickly, but not high enough that it does it to fast. Though some (wood lice) have a high tolerance for the stuff.

      Lol. I just saved a cows life by eating a grasshopper.

    I never had grasshopper.. remove the legs, the head, and the wings and I'd be down to try it. I mean... in theory, shrimp should be more disgusting, and I'd rather a million grasshoppers die before one cow (and I'm not a vegetarian).

      Should shrimp be more disgusting, or just equally disgusting? For the record, I think I prefer grasshoppers over shrimp.

      @@Nerding4Nature shrimp should be considered more disgusting. Their diet consist of parasites, mold, waste, etc. Grasshoppers eat grass among other leafy things lol

      Thanks. RUclips is great if you just want a platform to be creative, but not to grow...unless you are better at the game than me.
