Foraging for Mussels w/ Size and Taste Comparison

- I was never the biggest fan of Mussels, but I had an idea that might make them better. Does the size of them matter? Mussels are one of the easiest types of shellfish that anyone with a fishing license can gather. They're found between the intertidal zone at nearly any rocky locations. Easy to harvest and each person in California is allowed to take home 10 pounds each, everyday. Only thing you have to watch out for is the closed months. ALWAYS call the biotoxin hotline before going out to gather Mussels, clams, scallops or any other type of shellfish.

I mean am·nee·zuhk 😂. Not the best weather for fishing lately. Sorry for the slow uploads. No chance to do the float tube video yet either. Still waiting for that along with the opportunity to do more camping videos. Going ice fishing for the first time in a couple weeks so something to look forward to. Happy new year!
Have fun on the ice. If you hear cracking, RUN!
Just kidding, that's normal 🤣
I tried similar trial as yours and i find the way of cooking makes the biggest difference...I find the large one is the best.
Come up the hill a bit to fish for some steelhead or wild trout. sac area not to far.
Awesome stuff as always :) thank you
HNY G ... no be need to apologize... we all going threw this bs together 😭💯🙏

I love this channel also, if you’re interested check out Smash Fishing and The Fish Locker. I love these kinds of videos, so relaxing and interesting to watch!

The truth.

One major hint for getting mussels without any sand or particles in them: put them in fresh water for 1/2 hour, then pour salt generously in that water , stir with a broom handle (large stick) then these mussels will spit out all the sand and cleanse themselves entirely. Then after 10 minutes, stir vigorously with a large stick to get the exterior particles off, drain the water, rinse once more, then ready to cook. Guaranteed that you won’t get any mussels with salt or grinding nasty flavors in them.
Bon appétit
bon a petit?
This is similar to cleaning crawfish
@@rgmaclaren no it isn't. You don't put salt in water to clean crawfish. Let me cut you 100 times and put you in saltwater.
If you let them soak in salt water for an hour or so the sand should filter out naturally so when you do cook them it won't have all that sand and poop.
I have a bucket with small holes drilled into it, i suspend it off my dock into the salt and let them purge themselves, works great!
So you should purge them right? You shouldn’t just grab and cook them right off the rocks correct? That’s what I’ve always been told.
@@ChezJ1 yes, that is one way, you can also clean them if the option to purge does not exist. You would open them up before cooking and clean them, then prepare them.
I eat them with shell and all
@@348frank348 did you bump your head?
Lessons learned: don’t pour boiling water on yourself, and don’t eat the poop sack.
Got it! 😊
still have ugly scar on my leg the time i spill hot coffee all over it in my shorts. lesson learned..
who knew removing the poop made something taste better?
"Don't eat the poop sack." This advice right here! Hahahahaha
Don’t forget, don’t fall into the rocks. So many lessons in this one.
@@CytoplasmicGoo Totally agree. Say, what is it like, with regard to things like red tide with mussels? I've always refrained, because I was afraid of poisoning myself.
Seeing the big one:
"Ma'am.....MA'AM! Git me those clams!
I personally think this is one of the best and funniest videos you have ever done. Thank you!
I remember I was in a Rut and I enjoyed your videos 2 chill me out. Much love. Happy new years
I love you man, your channel is one of the most honest uplifting channels around. You have to work to get content and you do it with a smile on your face ! I'm a fisherman from Vancouver island Canada and one thing I always do before I go on the boat is download your content . I'll be hundreds of kilometres off the coast of Tofino and when or if I do get a break I have your videos downloaded. Your videos keep me grounded, thank you .
It's your personality that makes me want to watch your videos...

Way to close out the Year !! Thanks for sharing the info, looking forward to your next video. Wishing You a Very Healthy, Happy and Safe New year 💗🎣👍🍾
I keep them in an aerated box for a couple of days. They'll purge themselves of sand. I then steam them , shell them and make alfredo. Thanks for all the great vids this year. All the best for 2021.
Aerated box with water?
As much as I love your long 20-30min videos, I appreciate this shorter style of tutorial-like videos too. They’re just as effective in their own way imo. Keep up the good work!
Great informative video on mussel taste and regs. I like baking them with mayo, sriracha with a slice of jalapeno. So good!
Thank you for another great video Matts, at this point, whatever you catch/clean/cook, I’m watching it LOL
Happy New Year. Keep up the great content.
Happy New Year Matt and all !
Good one Matt!! Back in the early 70s when camping in Mexico we would forage and as a group bring in Abalone, Fish, Clams and Mussels. Great times and cleaner waters.
This taste test was my lesson learned for today and I never gave any thought to cleaning them either.
We had a big drum made up for the steaming but a small setup like you have would be nice too.
Thanks for the lesson!
Whenever im having a shit day your videos always put me in a better mood, without fail ! Thank you for all the great content, keep it up man !!
Thanks Matts , this episode just taught my 7yr old about mussels , for home school 🤝🏼.
We have been planning a trip to the beach. Thanks for the info, including how to find out when it is ok to harvest. I am looking forward to a mussel feast.
Happy new year can't wait to see your videos in 2021 tight lines
Happy New Year, Matt!

Happy New Matt and the Fisherman's Life Family!
Man I love your videos so much. Thank you so much for your content. You have inspired so many people to get out and fish. You have inspired my son and I to start our own channel as well. Thanks for all that you do!
I used to go for the big mussels too, they are gross, smaller ones are way better.
damn, Matt's channel grew by 0.3, and that's equal to 30,000 people. That's the most humble 0.3 you can ever ask for.
Lol 😂 great video like always! Happy New Year 🎊
Hey Matts, that was so funny, at 4.00. You made me laugh, thats not easy. Ya i love smoked mussels and oysters, Happy New Year bud...

Happy new year! Can't wait to try out my new jigs from your shop my wife got me for Christmas.
His humor and pauses in between sentences kills me lol. There’s no need for all the hyped up jump cuts and fancy editing
Love your channel and the knowledge matt, definitely gonna do this myself with my wife and kids. Looks tasty. I also just ordered your surf perch sand crab t-shirt plus the one you're wearing on this video the steelhead trout on a fly with white print, I can't wait to receive it😀. Great video as always! Mussels are the bomb in hot pot a must try if y'all haven't ☺️.

Great video! I love going out on the east coast to collect mussels that grow on the weeds... They are DELICIOUS. I like them especially steamed with a touch of vinegar, lime, and honey. Try that!
Awesome , happy New Years
I live in Missouri and love these videos! Our local Walmart started selling one of your favorites-rock fish!
Dude you cracked me up in the video 😂 looked like a weather anchor explaining the tide, and then the food reviews on the muscles 😂😂

I’m up in Roseville but love our north coast. Just got a 2021 19’ whaler so I’ll be watching for tips! Thanks 🙏🏼
Glad you mentioned the Cali 1800 number for water quality. I also wait after a Strom before harvesting shellfish because of urban and sewer run off.
You sounded like an Army rifle range master when you described the intertidal zone.
I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW ur the reason I got into fishing and doing CC and C and just watching fishing youtubers in general.
Also I love watching your face as you eat something new looks like how a robot processes a shit load of codes lol.
Happy New year to you brother and congratulations on all the success until many more success your way
Good video. Keep on fishing!
That look you had after eating the first small one is the same look I give my wife when she asks a dumb question.

Somehow I came across your channel a few years ago and have been binge watching your videos ever since. I have never been fishing nor do I ever plan to go but I LOVE your videos. You are definitely doing something right. I love this channel!
PS- I go to the store all the time and buy tilapia to eat with garlic salt, pepper and a “lil bit of butter” and mix it with rice and avocado to feel like I’m doing a catch and cook with you. Hahahaha. Keep it up!
Happy new year from Colorado!
