These 2012-14 camry have torque converter studder issues due to a software glitch. Ironically toyota made a weak torque converter and very low shift point which in turn made the torque converter fins warp under heavy load. Toyota has released about 3 software issues to fix the problem but unfortunately the torque converter needs to be replaced and update the correct version to the ECU. If left shuddering for a long time the transmission will need to be replaced. Hybirds do not have these issues. My 2014 developed the studder at 44k miles and under warranty it was replaced. It reappeared at 150k. They will go a long time studdering but if left alone the transmission oil will get contaminated. Anyone with a non hybird camry should honestly sell it while they can its a true headache and can cost thousands of dollars with no guarantee it will last 50k miles. Toyota unfortunately dropped the ball with these models.

I would do a full fluid flush on this one with some shudder guard before I condemned it.

The TCCN channel cut open a failed converter and the cause was obvious. The vanes do not warp! It is the narrow clutch surface around the permiter of the converter. My 2017 is also known for this problem, however I do not tow or drive is steep hills in eco mode so the converter is not being slipped to "improve" the EPA rating. There is almost no difference in fuel economy doing this. I am going to look for a device that defaults to power mode.

TCCN has a good video on this. I have a 2012 purchased new and no issues so far at 170k miles. I do however change my fluid with WS fluid every 60k miles.

I absolutely HATE Toyota's change to a NON-DIPSTICK automatic transmission because you can't check the damn thing!!!
Also, Toyota has a recommended transmission fluid change (not all of it) every 60,000 miles.
In some cases when a vehicle acts like this one a fluid change will fix the problem.

Changing the fluid in this car wont resolve anything. It WILL shudder regardless

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Pay now or pay later. Although some Toyotas did have torque converter and software issues. This just looks like a severe lack of routine maintenance.

  • @jdesaavedra0432
    @jdesaavedra0432 5 часов назад +1

These later Toyota have a torque converter overheat issue due to the engieers choosing to engage the clutch early to save a miniscule fuel economy. They were too aggressive "feathing" the clutch lockup to gain efficiency. Combine this with an aggressive driving habit will cause a shuddering failure as the TC clutch overheats and warps.

I read that most people who own camrys never service their trans at 80 thousand like the manual says. AND replacing the fluid has to be exact in the level for expansion. Too much fluid bad and not enough fluid bad.

How many miles on the car? Allen key just means the L-shape wrench tool. Wether it has a hex or Phillips or flat head at the tip it will still be an Allen wrench.

Hi Kenny, no doubt this Camry transmission took a beating. Periodic fluid changes would have likely made the transmission run trouble free for several hundred thousand miles. The fluid should be changed at least every 75 to 100 thousand miles. It's possible that some teenager was rough on the transmission trying to show off to their friends.

That's normal for the WS Automatic Transmission Fluid color. I have a 2017 Camry with the 2.5 and the fluid has always been a very dark red, almost black in color transmission fluid. I have always used either Toyota WS (world standard) transmission fluid or Aisin WS transmission fluid. Although, I have heard of many people using Valvoline Max Life transmission fluid and had no issues.
The 2012-2014 and some early 2015's had Torque Converter issues. You will need to change the torque converter, perform an transmission TCM software update, and drop the trans pan and change the filter.

  • @jdesaavedra0432

I performed 100% fluid changes in all my Toyotas using Valvoline MaxLife, with no issues in several years.

If you catch it early, you can replace the converter and install a bunch of extra magnets.

If you select power mode, the converter will lock up at a higher RPM and avoid this mess.
