As I was loading my car to go to the Asheville Guitar Show with ‪@truevintageguitar‬, I thought about how one of the amps I was packing into the back was worth MORE than the car itself.
I've got a 60's Magnatone(listen to it, it's badass) and some other killer gear from my friend Elliott at Wonder Records in Harrisonburg.

Another great video Jeremy! I had an old vauxhall agila(uk car) that was my grandmas ans was left to me when she died. That car I used to drive me to all of my gigs around the country for 6 years. It was so heartbreaking when I had to scrap her, but one of the reg plates is still hanging in my living room!! Haha

Good idea to get the rental! Also looks like you missed one scene blocking the license plate #.

as a fellow 900$ subaru owner, and life long gear head, I'll tell you that subaru's - particularly 1st 2nd gens - will be where MOST of your common to subaru issues are found.
Each iteration is intended to be a progression from the last, as well as subtle changes between years of each particular gen.
(keep in mind road trippers, because of subarus awd, if needing towed, they have to be trailered, and towing them two wheels down will due damage.)
(Also, Check Engine light can mean something as simple as a catalytic converter code, have any auto shop hook up an OBD to check codes)
In the 1st/2nd gens is where you will see the common head gasket, transmission, CV type issues. As Tim mentioned, routinely check your fluids, ideally all of them, even having too low/high of transmission fluid can make for oddly/harsh shifts because of incorrect pressures. Also, be aware of any fluid loss - particularly on longer drives - things like oil &/or coolant burning up. Oil will give a blue-ish hue to the cars exhaust smoke, and coolant will be particularly white & foggy (as well as have an aroma of maple syrup, which is the coolant being burnt). These are signs a gasket has a breach into a combustion chamber.
Along with routinely having your coolant checked for combustion gasses via a test kit, another way to be sure, as well as preventative, is to check that your main grounding wire that's attached to your frame isn't becoming oxidized. An oxidized ground wont allow the stored electrical energy to properly ground, meaning it stays in the system, charging the coolant, which makes for electrolysis, which eventually finds its way back to ground due to the path of least resistance - this is why nearly all of the 1st-2nd gen head gasket issues are all in the same area, near the front drivers side of the engine.

I’ve got a 1998 Subaru Forester that I’ve owned for 18 years. I had the head gasket changed about a year after I bought it. Always make sure oil and radiator fluid is good by inspecting the color of the oil on the dip stick no oil in the radiator fluid and no bubbles coming out of radiator with the cap off. I watch the temp gage like a hawk. So far the replacement gasket has lasted 17 years and well over another 100k. Subaru’s are well known for misfires from the number one piston. All that being said I would never drive my car more than a three hour drive so you definitely made the right call in renting a car to safety get you to Asheville. Nothing out there like a Subaru to get you through some rough weather. I never plan on selling mine.

People questioned me taking my 2003 truck on a road trip versus my 2016 model. My logic was it has had so many parts replaced over the last 17 years, the parts that really matter actually don't have that high of mileage (and it gets better gas mileage). The trip was completely uneventful. You'll be fine!

Jeremy Sheppard I only really noticed cause I was watching the video and my wife who does not appreciate the sound of the Magnatone (she’s more of a Marshall snob if I might say) kept staring at me with ele very volume increase. I was joking she is actually into Fenders 😂 just heard your podcast with RHETT SHULL yesterday, great stuff got you a subscriber

Subaru longevity is a myth. The list of things that will go wrong with these piles is long. Had a '95 and an '05 and will never go there again. Even with regular maintenance they will fail repeatedly. Head gaskets are the worst but trans' are weak, evap system sucks, rear part (diff & driveshaft) of the AWD drivetrain is garbage. You can keep them running but be prepared to throw cash at them. Don't forget the rust. Keep the Auto Club membership up to date.

Oh mine has had everything break. New head gasket, new main seal, new block of some sort. I bought it from a guy who got it sorted but couldn't take another repair.
      It's an eager little pup.
