This had some of the best exchanges I’ve ever seen in sword and buckler!

That was just great. I've been on the fence for a while about whether arming sword and buckler was something I wanted to do and I think this video has just made up my mind.

1:05 very good habit, we should see more of it in tournaments.

Binding is really good with a buckler

Is it just me or does the exchange at 1:38 have like seven hand/arm/leg hits before the actual scored blow?

Very hard to see. From playing it back in Slo Mo the only one I think might have been one is right before the last thrust. The other ones are either not, or impossible to tell.

At the risk of sounding like a keyboard warrior, I have some issues with this.
I know fighting can get messy but that's when fundamentals matter most.
Leaving your buckler behind and static while making an attack, - why do we spend so many hundreds and thousands of hours in the wards if we don't use them in actual fighting?
Or fighting by getting off the line instead of standing and trading blow? The number of times we've had to do laps and burpees for that...
We're taught so many things about structure and form and to leave that behind at a high level of tournament..
I don't know, Maybe I'm too new but I'm going to choose to try really hard to stay at my fundamental/basic beginner level for a really long time before I try to go up. The last thing I want is to lose them when I need them.
    Fight earnestly!

Last rule of fighting: break the rules. Also you can see their form in the slow-mos. Meaning they do get them perfect, for a couple milliseconds (which is all the time you need to have perfect form anyways)

On the one hand, you're right, training fundamentals is good and it's how you make sure you're not just flailing wildly under pressure. On the other hand, standing in wards probably won't do you much good. And laps/burpees are more about general fitness than stepping offline, general fitness is going to make it much easier to win a swordfight but it doesn't actually teach you anything about swordsmanship.

It's like with vulgar vs proper destreza in their time period. Stupid, unnecessary risks, complete butchering of the form, but sometimes it just seems to work lol

Although those moments where Ledford shots his arm behind you can see that it's usually a part of a wider movement, he's counterbalancing this way. There's lots of this stuff in chinese "fechtbuchs". In one case it seems like an invitation attempt

I agree with everything you just said. Technique is better than raw aggression. If techniques are taught, go ahead and use them to the best of your knowledge and training.

way Blythe didint get points for half of hes hits?

I don't really blame the judges. It is really hard to see some hits. I really wish HEMA begins to implement some sort of high speed camera system with judges analyzing the fights afterwards.

blythe scored no hits that werent given to him. I know because I am the guy he was hitting. Every one of our points was accounted for correctly. if he didnt get points its because he didnt hit me. If you noticed the action stopped at 3:59, thats because I acknowledged his cut to my head. I also told the judges he struck my lower leg after the very forst exchange rather then let them erroneously award him upper leg, which would have been a lower point value. These arent lightsabers, and these heavy blades actually hit rather hard, almost unsafely so. If there was incidental contact, you notice neither of us stopped fighting. neither fighter wants to get a point for that. When he hit me, I acknowledged it. Ben is an amazing opponent, and I would never want to cheat a win from him. AS it was, this was the best final ive ever fought in, and we were evenly matched. It could have gone either way.
Now of you meanthe score, the guys doint the video didnt keep up with the socre accurately, but the table scorekeepers did, and the win was legit. Sorry, I just realized that this is what you might have meant ;-P

@WenTian Guo in the video it appears so, but trust me, the buckler was solid and placed where it needed to be. The judges saw that I hesitated when I threw it, so I could place it safely, because Ben is my friend, and placed it rather gently just as he was ducking his head, rather than letting a weighted straight left (i used to be a boxer) fly and hurt my friend. I have already knocked out one opponent on his feet with a buckler punch in tournament, and almost TKOd another. I risked not getting the point to ensure this did not happen. i know at least one judge saw this (he told me after).
