I love Chris' videos. His no nonsense and common sense attitude has got him a lifetime fan. He will be my consultant when I purchase next year. Keep doing what you're doing 😅
Centre cockpits on larger boats can make sense because you won't compromise so much on saloon space and the cockpit itself can be large enough. One advantage I found is the motion comfort when you are closer to the middle of the boat is better. In addition, the space behind the cockpit can still be used for lounging around. My Westerly 43 CC had these nice "love" seats completely aft which were nice provided the conditions weren't too rough.
That’s my favourite part. You can be arrogant all you want. As long as you are brilliant in the area you are arrogant about. Thanks for the info and laughs Chris
Great video! Buying a used sailboat for crossing oceans is a bold endeavor, but you guys are handling it like pros. Jeff may have picked a fight he couldn't finish, but that's all part of the learning experience. Take the L, learn from it, and come back stronger. And yes, it's definitely a 51.1, no doubt about it! Keep up the incredible work, you guys are absolute ball busters out there on the water. Can't wait to see where your sailing adventures take you next!
Watching 9 months later and that 2011 Beneteau Oceanis is now 70k, still sitting there. I have about 10 years before I will look for a nice Caribbean cruiser. Fingers crossed prices are good!
Quick question (not to challenge your position but to understand it): why does capsize screening mean nothing to you? As far as I can tell, it's a valid design factor... does it really have no bearing in actual practice?
Does not take into account the location of the ballast, hull design as well as several other factors, the capsize ratio was introduced in the late 70's after a sailing race where multiple boats went down, not an actual valid number to base anything off of
@@ChasingLatitudescould you please show us in a video how all of those mentioned factors affect stability AND comfort? Maybe compare a deep fin keel balast to ballast in hull? Show how decieving their numbers are?
I loved your 50foot 1/4 million pick . I will stay with my custom steel yacht with Mercedes engine with hydraulic drive for 15,000. When I hit the reef hopefully it will not sink.lol. Not going to worry about it. 36 foot waterline length plus 7 foot 3 foot diameter bulbous bow. It will fly at 43 foot. I have to add the bulbous bow but it is steel should be a chain compartment there just weld it on right?
My god you are sassy. I love it. Also you are making me realise I can’t buy an old boat. Dang it. The Australian dollar isn’t anywhere near the value of American or European currencies, which means a $50,000 boat to you is a (minimum) $90,000 boat here. Was really keeping the dream alive when I thought I could get away with an older boat, but now I know better. Again, dang it.
One more strike on the Cat 385 - the sea hood / sliding hatch only opens a laughable amount. At 6’2” I have to contort myself to get into and out of the cabin. Just stupid.
I so happen to be watching this video 8 months later and looking at yachtworld at the same time and I see a listing for a 2011 Beneteau Oceanis 40 with same pic and broker as in this video but going for 70k instead of 89k. Assuming it's the same boat and not a lazy broker reusing pics, it looks like the market is heading in the right direction.
I follow a grand total of two RUclips channels now. I’ve never even been on a sailboat. Congratulations, I don’t know how you broke the code. Oh, and FU Jeff.
But when I do that someone will always comment, increasing youtube engagement in turn then RUclips gives the video more impressions, I miss spell something in every video 😂 big brain IQ moves
I didn't see this video when it was posted 4mth ago but it hasn't aged well. There are zero 51.1 on yachtworld for less than 300k. And no way are those going to be less than 5 yrs old. At 225k, you are around the same age and size as the Catalina 385. But yes, when the price is in the same ballpark, go with the Bene
Why are old sailboats not depreciated more? The amount of 1980's boats for $100,000 is ridiculous. I get that you have dumped money into the boat and you want to get it back out. Maybe the rigging and sails are new, but structurally everything is still 1980. The aluminum in the mast is still old and stressed, the spreaders are probably old. I could buy a 2000's boat for $100,000 and at the very least not have 20 years of stress. Why are boat buyers so willing to throw too much money at something a bank would not give you a loan for? Can you really get insurance for the amount you over-paid for an old boat? ranting...
IMO is because the market is at a breaking point and these sellers are living in the past thinking Covid is still a thing and their boat is an “investment” instead of the depreciating asset it is. I love these videos and the comparison to the ex charters because those are actual businesses that are selling the used assets and you see a true market price. Private sellers are living in a fantasy world and maybe the don’t need to sell, but they can’t keep propping up inflated expectations forever.
Sorry guys … US-made boats are shit. Good brands are all scandinavian or italian: Swan, Halberg-Rassy, X-yachts, Solaris, Grand Soleil, Italia Yachts (see who wins the ORC races… no others). Then there are the French and German mass production… Benetteau, Jeanneau, Dufour, Hanse and Bavaria … taking into account that Germans have big problems with quality .. everybody think that German are reliable but this works for cars, not for boats … Benetteau and Jeanneau 100 times over Hanse and Bavaria … not to be forgotten … Elan, it’s Slovenian, made in Croatia, and some Elan last generation are quite good. All the US made are shit … with the exception of J-boat that are anyway overpriced for what they are. I personally will be happy to commute my Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 (2020) with a Grand Soleil 44 Performance … my favorite 44ft … winner of ORC world championship

Jeff asked for it. Don’t pick fights you can’t finish
True, I mean he did ask for it
Great info and hopefully JEFF was paying attention
Definitely a 51.1, that’s a no-brainer.😊
That was what I kinda figured
What a ball buster, I love it.

LOL jeff got owned I think

Thanks JEFF.

Actually, $250,000 is a quarter of a million dollars not $225,000 but what’s $25,000 between friends. Love your videos mate, you’re a legend. 😎👍

Boy, glad I didn't bring up the Catalina 400 MKII. Like I thought about doing!

That's the cool thing about these market break downs , you can see the same boats months later rotting away for less money
How much would it cost to put a hard top on the Oceanis 41 with the factory arch already there?
I was really thinking I would hear about dual helm boats, not jeff but that's just me.
I'd be fascinated to know who buys a Catalina 385 at that price. Crazy.

Good old Jeff
I'm a youg dude with no money that wants to buy a cape dory 25 and I just want to know what are my chances of sinking on a ocean crossing
Higher than my chances of dating Paris Hilton
A lot less if you have a Jordan series drogue and attachment points rated for atleast 30% more than the weight of your boat fully loaded.

Wauw 225k for a 51.1 oceanis.
Here in europe i get a oceanis 45 for that ☹️
But the running costs are much less for the 385.

Why the market crash? Too many boats? Everyone broke? Sharknado fears? 😂

Just being honest here, I know I don't deserve the luxury of the beneteau 51.1, I better just buy that Catalina 385. That's all I deserve.
