  • Greetings, and welcome to our guide on hob and oven repair. If you are experiencing issues with your appliance where the flame goes out upon releasing the knob, do not fret. The flame should remain lit after holding the knob down for a few seconds - let us explain why this may not be happening and demonstrate how to test it.
We have dissected a gas valve to better illustrate the inner workings. The thermocouple, invented in the 1800s by Thomas C. Beck, generates a small amount of direct current (DC) electricity. This electrical current flows to an electronic valve within the gas valve. When you press the knob down, you bypass this electronic valve, allowing time for the thermocouple to reach its operating temperature. Upon release, the valve should remain open due to the constant DC current keeping it active.
To test for potential faults, we have set up a demonstration using a dissected valve and a thermocouple. When the plunger or valve is pressed down without heat applied to the thermocouple, it does not lock in place. However, once heat is introduced and the plunger is pressed down, it locks into position. Removing the heat source causes the valve to unlock after a predetermined period, ensuring your gas appliance remains safe.
Testing a thermocouple's energy output is straightforward - simply set your meter to measure millivolts of DC electricity. For twin-wire versions, connect to the outer rim (positive) and inner rim (negative) before positioning the thermocouple into a flame. Thanks to the Seebeck effect, discovered in 1800, introducing a flame will cause the thermocouple to produce energy.

Absolute brilliant video, not sure but your videos keep coming up in my YT feed. Anyhow, had an issue with one of our burners not staying lit, after watching your video I went to the said burner and first thing I noticed was the thermocouple was slightly higher than the flame itself, so I knocked it down with a couple of taps and what do you know - the flame now stays lit! save ourselves I'd say maybe £150 with a callout and paying for a part we didn't need!
    Thank you :D

Thanks a million for the well done video. Your explanation of a single wire thermocouple using the stove chassis as a return for the thermocouple electric signal was a perfect explanation in that it requires the thermocouple to be tightly and cleanly bolted down to the burner. The nut was loose and so tightening it resolved the return signal to the gas valve. Works perfectly now! Many thx
