I just noticed the filter element in your picture of the PUR filter also has small amounts of the same thing my filter had all over it. So PUR filters need to be cleaned because the filter particles seep out or are made in unclean conditions, or not ready for packaging prior to shipping?
@@waterfilterguru I had written to PUR and both certification agencies, nobody had any reasonable answer. So PUR products are dirty with manufacturing debris upon purchase, even in the fancy sealed bag to imply that it is sterile when it probably isn't? Then you need to run water through the filter for 5 minutes in order to perform the final step in manufacturing - a clean filter? Is there a better filter, one that starts by being clean?
I just bought the pure horizontal filter from Walmart and it's currently being drained out for the 5 minutes The only thing I'm concerned about is the sink faucet itself it's a bit loose I don't know if my apartment can allow me to install a new one do you know if most apartments can allow residents to just buy their own faucets and have them installed by their apartments technician? Also does the looseness of the sink affect the performance of the filter system?
That would be a question for the management of the apartment complex. As long as there is no leak, if the faucet itself is loose in its fittings it wouldn't affect the filter performance. However if the filter does not snugly screw onto the faucet arm and create a tight seal, there will be leaking and filter issues

@ Awesome! 🙂 Well some of the brands I’ve been looking at for bath ball filters are Sprite, Crystal Quest, AquaPure and Brenrie. There are so many bath balls out there, especially on Amazon. But unfortunately most are from companies I’ve never heard of and whether or not they can be trusted is a question I ask. Also, I really appreciate the work you do. Your videos and website have been such a huge help to me and my family.
Hi! Thank you for your detailed video and answering all questions. In my PUR horizontal faucet setup, I can only put the filter in the opposite way. Do you recall a model where the center "click in side" faced the cover and not the housing? I know the first one I purchased the "tab side" faced the cover like all online videos and your video show. And I recall there wasn't anywhere to "click" in with my first PUR vertical setup. Im planning to purchace a new faucet mount, as this one is getting very hard to open/close, but I was just curious if I may have just gotten an oddball setup?
I have a PUR FM2500V a few years ago, by the time I go on to the second filter change the unit was leaking everywhere. it eventually end up in the trash, I bought a Brita pitcher, I don't think is does as good, bit it does leak either..

@@lilybond6485 By encasement, are you referring to the blue housing that the filter media comes in? Your new filters will have this. You can get rid of the old one
@@BrentLahey-h7g it's mentioned in the video at 3:41 that you should not filter hot water through it, and it's easy to accidentally do so. Does that answer your question?
This is my third or fourth PUR. Water filter. The others all leaked water , and it didn't take very long to start leaking. So I thought I would try one more time. This one has been hooked up about 2 months. No water leaks yet ,But.... It says good for about 3 months... Then why does the yellow light starts flashing after two weeks ? Something's not set right.
What type of filter are you looking for? Most systems involve some sort of plastic component, especially the filter cartridge. There are some gravity based systems that do not involve much plastic, but that's about it.
Measuring TDS isn't always an accurate way to tell if a water filter is performing as expected or not. First off, I'd like to say thanks so much for doing these reviews and answering everyone's questions in the comments! They are super helpful! I have city water and ran a tap score test. My tap score results is a 68, which isn't great. The main big troublemakers on the list were Bromodichloromethane (13.9 PPB), Chloroform (54.4 PPB), Total THMs (72.46 PPB), Dibromochloromethane (4.16 PPB), Lead (0.00454 PPM) and fluoride (0.507 PPM). Do you feel the PUR Plus Faucet filter is good enough to remove these contaminants? I do have one for my sink but I am not totally satisfied. I also would like something that removes fluoride. Do you have any other suggestions I should look into with these test results? On a side note: I am thinking about using Pro One in my Big Berkey system or getting some kind of distiller. What is your opinion on distillation water systems? Wouldn't it be more cost effective to get something like that and just add minerals back into the water? Would be a good topic to cover.
Hey thanks for your comment and detailed info! The PUR Plus faucet filter should be sufficient for reducing the disinfection byproducts (DBPs) including Bromodichloromethane (13.9 PPB), Chloroform (54.4 PPB), Total THMs (72.46 PPB), Dibromochloromethane (4.16 PPB) as well as the lead. Check the performance datasheet here www.pur.com/wp-content/uploads/pds_rf-9999_faucet.pdf And here is a link to the NSF/ANSI 53 certification for the reduction of VOCs (the DBPs listed) and lead: info.nsf.org/Certified/dwtu/Listings.asp?TradeName=RF-9999&Standard=&ProductType=&PlantState=&PlantCountry=&PlantRegion=&submit3=Search&hdModlStd=ModlStd Unfortunately the PUR Plus faucet filter will not address the fluoride. You'll need an additional filter for that. A simple solution would be a water filter pitcher that you fill with the PUR Plus fuacet filter. Both ZeroWater geni.us/g7NtSZ and also Clearly Filtered geni.us/VsUZHW1 performed well in our own testing and completely eliminated fluoride. Be pre-filtering with the faucet filter, you will greatly extend the lifespan of the pitcher filter. Alternatively, distillation is also an option but it's both time and energy intensive, taking 6-8 hours to produce just 1 gallon of water. You would also want to consider remineralization.
@@waterfilterguru Hey! Thanks so much for the detailed response! You’re definitely helping me make the best decision. I see on the distiller situation. Yes it does - it’s the only faucet filter brand certified by both the NSF and the WQA to remove 70 common tap water contaminants. That’s pretty rare - most of the faucet-mount water filters we’ve seen don’t even have any certifications, and those that do are usually only certified to remove a handful of contaminants.
I've had 10 in the past 7 years and they used to be great. But, the last 3 units all leaked at the seams after the first 3 months. I had to stop buying due to the poor quality of the basic unit.
I just bought a pur faucet filter today, 2 seconds after installation and first time running water through it, it leaks in 3 places. The quality of everything in life has gone down the last 5ish years. It’s like companies just don’t care, because the gov let’s them get away with it tbh
We've not lab tested any faucet filters yet, so I don't have any firsthand data. The PUR faucet filter is the most extensively certified that I'm aware of, though.
You don’t need one if you have a brand new house or apartment. Most newer faucets have newer filters anyways. This is mainly for low income or older houses or apartments. That’s the reason I have it.
Yes this will not work with modern faucets like those that pull out with sprayer handles. You're absolutely right that they only work with older style, more basic faucets
I live in Ohio and the water is not the best. What makes me shy away is the thing about hot water damaging it. I know I will goof and flip on the hot water and be oblivious to it going through the filter.
What I don't like is that the green light becomes yellow, then red, only after about a dozen gallons of water filtered when the specs say each filter lasts for 100 gallons. WTF ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? That's freaking expensive water.
If you ever need to remove it from the faucet, then you are in BIG trouble! The black ring that attaches to the faucet is made of a cheap, soft, plastic. If it gets even a little bit stuck, you are NOT getting it off without possibly breaking your fixture. The plastic sticks to the faucet and is too soft to use a wrench to remove without stripping it bare. I needed to ask a plumber to help me get it off when I needed to replace it! The idiots who designed this thing don't deserve the jobs that they have! Don't let the brand name or promises of great filtration fool you into thinking this is a well-made product, because it is NOT!
@@waterfilterguru - Indeed, that was why I needed to remove it. Unrelated plumbing work had caused it to clog with sediment, so I was trying to remove it to see if it could be cleaned or needed replacement. But that badly-designed ring is not easy to get a strong grip on by hand due to the shape of the unit, and as I said the plastic is so cheap and soft that tools just chew it up. We were able to get the ring off, but only by first breaking the entire unit off so that a larger wrench could be used. Thanks!

Nope, these filters are intended for use with municipally treated tap water, which in most cases won't have microbiological contaminants due to the disinfection process at the treatment plant
@@waterfilterguru . That's great news . Hopefully that is why it says "PUR does not filter microbes " on the box . Because, from what you are saying , the microbes are eliminated b4 it gets to the user.
Correct, biological contaminants (pathogens) are removed at the water treatment plant through the disinfection process. This PUR filter is intended for use with municipally treated tap water only, thus it is not necessary for it to remove microbes. That being said, if the treatment system goes down and you get a boil water advisory, keep in mind that this system will not protect you from potential recontamination in an event like that.

@@waterfilterguru ah okay. cuz sometimes when i turn the faucet on the water may come out like a fork for a few seconds but then it evens itself out. i double and triple checked my screwing and i know i got it snugly screwed in good. should i have used the littlefaucet heads that come with the device? I would love to see you make a video on marketed filters for bathtubs. Filtering for the shower and sinks is one thing. But what about the bath, especially for children? I'm on a mission to filter every mode of water used in the home and am a mother of 2 who is currently a renter. And trying to sort through these kinds of filters is a bit of a headache.
I completely understand. Thanks for your request, I do have a project to test bath filters specifically on my to-do list. Is there any brand in particular you'd like to see included?
@ Awesome! 🙂 Well some of the brands I’ve been looking at for bath ball filters are Sprite, Crystal Quest, AquaPure and Brenrie. There are so many bath balls out there, especially on Amazon.
I'm not sure, I've only had one of each (vertical and horizontal). The filter is inserted and clicks in.

There are some gravity based systems that do not involve much plastic, but that's about it.
What is tds reading for this product?
Measuring TDS isn't always an accurate way to tell if a water filter is performing as expected or not. In this case, this filter is not intended or capable of reducing TDS, so measuring TDS isn't going to tell you much.

Does it filter out calcium and rust?
It will not filter out calcium. It will only filter out oxidized, ferric rust particles but not dissolved ferrous iron
I wonder if it filters out fracking contaminants?
It would depend on what contaminants in the water source are increased by the fracking activity. There are over 1,000 contaminants that can be imparted to a water source by shale gas exploration (source: www.urmc.rochester.edu/news/story/study-links-fracking-drinking-water-pollution-and-infant-heath)

Does it filter PFAS?
Knowing that activated carbon is one of the media used in the filter, we could assume that yes, it does reduce PFAs chemicals. Activated carbon is one of the most researched methods of PFAs reduction to date: waterfilterguru.com/how-to-remove-pfas-from-water/

Unfortunately the PUR Plus faucet filter will not address the fluoride.
I am looking for something that’s not too much maintenance and cost effective. What about ZeroWater, don’t you have to remineralize after filtration as well? I do like that Clearly Filtered keeps the minerals in.

Does it work that’s the question
Yes it does - it’s the only faucet filter brand certified by both the NSF and the WQA to remove 70 common tap water contaminants. That’s pretty rare - most of the faucet-mount water filters we’ve seen don’t even have any certifications, and those that do are usually only certified to remove a handful of contaminants.
I've had 10 in the past 7 years and they used to be great. But, the last 3 units all leaked at the seams after the first 3 months. I had to stop buying due to the poor quality of the basic unit.
Wow. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like the quality of the housing has changed over time.
What unit do you use now instead?
I just bought a pur faucet filter today, 2 seconds after installation and first time running water through it, it leaks in 3 places. The quality of everything in life has gone down the last 5ish years. It’s like companies just don’t care, because the gov let’s them get away with it tbh
I thought i've seen it all with a mirror with bluetooth but no, now we even got a faucet with bluetooth!
Are there any other faucet filters you’ve tested? What’s the best one?

Thanks for sharing. It sounds like the runner o-ring became stuck, possibly due to a buildup of minerals/ scale.
Thanks!
